Autumn is nearly upon us...
From The Desk Of The CEO Back to Business and Building What Comes Next September is upon us, and I don’t know about you, but summer went by way too quickly. The kids are heading back to school, Deidre Martinez calendars are filling up again and, around the Chamber, it is definitely time to get down to business. Fall is always one of our busiest seasons, with a full lineup of events, programs and opportunities designed to bring our business community together, strengthen connections and continue moving Sheboygan County forward. One of those important conversations will take place at our Workforce Development Symposium on September 16. As we prepare for this year’s event, I have been spending a great deal of time working through our most recent workforce development executive report and reflecting on what we have learned through Make Your Mark.

And there is a lot to reflect on. When Make Your Mark began, much of the conversation centered around talent attraction: How do we tell the Sheboygan County story? How do we reach people outside our region? How do we introduce them to our employers and the opportunities that exist here? Those questions still matter. But three years of doing this work—and, more importantly, listening to employers, job seekers, newcomers, interns, young professionals and community partners—have taught us that workforce development is much bigger than recruitment. Marketing can create awareness, but human relationships create connection. A job opportunity may be what first gets someone’s attention, but people are also choosing a community. They want to understand where they will live, how they will meet people, what opportunities exist for their spouse or family, where they
