REFLECTIONS FROM THE HEAD Mr Jenkins’ Speech Day 2026 Speech sums up the highlights from the 2025-26 academic year. “It is a privilege to welcome you all to Shebbear College’s Speech Day 2026. I welcome all parents, grandparents our special guest Chris Blencowe, former governors and heads, our current chair of governors Ronell Selzer and ILG’s chief operating officer Justin Spanswick. It has been another fantastic year for Shebbear College and one that has passed faster than any other I can remember in my teaching career. The action-packed college calendar certainly helps to make time fly by and we have once again kept our Shebbearians busy both inside and outside the classroom throughout this year - we have certainly lived up to our reputation as a school that places just as much importance on learning outside the classroom as we do inside it. We have had a strong showing in many areas this year, giving huge opportunities for our pupils with school competitions, local, regional and national events, across academic, sport, music, drama, art, Ten Tors and DofE – the huge opportunities our small school in north Devon provides are impressive. These opportunities have led to success on the national stage in the performing arts this year with finalists in both the ISA Young Musician of the Year competition and the ISA National Public Speaking Competition, and you will see both Yvie and Eleanor perform today. I am so proud that we can support the talent to reach the finals of national competitions, in whatever area it might be (and over the years, Shebbear has had many successes). However, there are also so many of our pupils who push themselves outside of their comfort zones in so many different ways that are also in need of acknowledgement. Whether it is performing on stage for the first time, making that tackle in a rugby match that they really did not want to, working with their teammates to get through challenging conditions out on Dartmoor, or going that extra mile with their maths homework and digging deep to ensure they really understand the problem. The everyday, day-in, day-out examples of our pupils doing things that challenge them are what make Shebbear such a great place to be.

One area of school life that I consistently see our pupils being challenged and supported to achieve things they didn’t always know were possible is within the art department. Ms Kaur quietly nurtures her artists to unleash their potential – she supports the unknown artist within many and polishes those who are already confident in their abilities, and she does all this with her characteristic modesty, calmness and quiet determination. Please do go to look at our pupils’ work in the Art Department once you have enjoyed some refreshments later. Now whilst Shebbear remains a plucky island of positivity and enthusiasm, we all know the independent education sector is facing significant headwinds at the moment, over 100 schools have closed since the introduction of VAT on school fees, alongside countless mergers and acquisitions by education groups. Shebbear stands confidently as a school that is facing the future with firm support from the Inspired Learning Group, meaning we are able to provide a quality, stable education for our children and their families. Not only are we able to provide this here and now, but we are looking ahead to the future with some excitement. I shared earlier this term plans for the development of a Special Educational Needs school, to be called Holme Court Devon, to be hosted on the Shebbear site as well as the much-desired expansion of our vocational subject offerings from 2027 with the development of Pyke House as our Vocational Hub, complete with commercial café so our pupils can learn from a real-life business. We aim to be a leading light within the independent school sector as the government rolls out the new vocational level (or V Level) qualifications and to provide more practical subjects with opportunities to apply what is learnt to the real world. All generations have faced their own challenges as they pass through school and enter the world of higher education and work, many of us in this room will have felt a little like guinea pigs during our own school days as new exams have been introduced during our critical school years. But, the current generation of under 18s face such significant technological change in the world they will be entering in their 20s it is hard to comprehend. It has become a bit of a cliché to say that they will be doing jobs that haven’t been invented yet, but it has never been more true than it is today. Fifteen years ago, many of us would have scoffed at the idea of a social media manager being an actual job, today, so many organisations have a team doing just this. Who knows what seemingly bizarre lines of work our
11-year-olds will be entering into? I actually asked AI to help me with this one… it gave me a reasonable list – most of which I just could not get my head around, but the idea of “digital twin ethics specialist” jumped out at me – the idea that we will all have avatars that can attend meetings in our place and carry out work on our behalf. The digital twin ethics specialist’s job will be to ensure there are ethical parameters applied to this new technology. All very exciting and interesting stuff, but how do we respond to this? Faced with this kind of future, what is our role as a school? What is our job in preparing our pupils for the work they will face? Learning facts, understanding how to form a persuasive argument, knowing the skills required to answer an examination question. This is all useful stuff. But with the technological change we are seeing, the human values of compassion, courage, creativity, curiosity and confidence will be key. Those who were listening carefully may have noticed that I have listed five of our six Shebbear College values and I have hesitated to include all six – which one is missing? Courtesy – I’ve hesitated to include this because in my experience, AI is endlessly courteous, and I find myself being endlessly courteous back – I have been reliably educated that by saying please and thank you to Microsoft Copilot as it rewrites a health and safety policy for me, I am merely burning valuable energy and contributing to the melting ice caps by including unnecessary words, but I just can’t bring myself to be abrupt with something that appears to be so helpful! Humans of course need courtesy (and we have it in spades at Shebbear), but it seems AI can also mirror this effectively. I genuinely believe that by instilling our “six Cs” within our Shebbearians, they will be well prepared for the world of work – whatever that may look like.

The compassion to understand other humans, the confidence and courage to know what is right, the creativity and curiosity to know what to do, when you don’t know what to do. These are the skills (amongst many others) that our college values will equip our Shebbearians with in this uncertain and rapidly changing world. As part of instilling our college values, we like to encourage and reward our pupils to do things that are difficult, to dig deep and develop grit and determination, to show commitment to a difficult task. This is reflected in our college motto – Ad Gloriam Per Spinas – To Glory Through Thorns. Back in September, I shared details of our new award of that name. The Glory Through Thorns award has been designed to recognise, encourage and reward those who show commitment to hard challenges and achieve difficult things. When designing the award, we wanted to ensure we got the balance just right, so that it wasn’t so hard as to be unachievable, but equally, we should not be awarding a significantly high number each year; it should be difficult to achieve, and those who do so should feel pride in their achievement. It seems, after one academic year, that we have pitched it just right with just one (very well deserving pupil) achieving the six thorns to qualify and we will present this inaugural award today. None of the challenge to achieve difficult things would be there without our highly dedicated staff team. They really do go the extra mile, not just in the classroom, but on the sports field, on the stage, out on the moor, in the equestrian arena and so many other fantastic locations that give our young people the opportunity to shine, to learn and to grow. The team have once again gone above and beyond this year and I am always heartened when a parent takes the time to contact me and tell me how grateful they are for what a member of staff has done for their child – it certainly livens up my inbox! Keeping the Shebbear show on the road takes dedication, hard work and humour. I only have two goodbyes to say from our staff team this year… P6

We say goodbye to Andy Evans who has been our resident graduate assistant this year. He has been a calm and steady figure in both boarding and within the sports department and we wish him well as he returns to Loughborough University to resume his studies. We also say farewell (although she is not going very far at all) to Tracey Fleming, our head of personalised learning, as she takes up the post of Head of Centre at Holme Court Devon – she will literally be at the end of the field. I would like to thank Ms Fleming for all she has done over the past two years at Shebbear to support our pupils. I also need to say thank you to all of our parents, and often grandparents, who do so much to support our endeavours. I know we have a huge number of Shebbear cheerleaders out there, talking positively about what a Shebbear education offers. Your support means a huge amount to the college and it is never taken for granted.”

REFLECTIONS FROM THE HEADS OF SCHOOL “I still remember my first day at Shebbear College. I was waiting to be placed into an English set and was sitting beside Mrs Lovett, who said that we would be “best friends”. At the time, I was constantly grumpy and unmotivated, but throughout that year with the school production, the netball and hockey matches, and the wonderful summer term, I began to appreciate everything that Shebbear has to offer. It was the beginning of the journey that helped become the person I am today. One of the things I am most grateful for during my time here is the opportunity to take part in so many productions. With the guidance of Mrs Sadler-Smith, we have performed shows such as Grease, West Side Story, Les Misérables and, most recently, Sister Act. Four years ago, I never would have imagined that one of my favourite feelings in the world would be stepping onto that stage in the Memorial Hall, feeling the warmth of the lights on my skin, and performing alongside some of my favourite people. The sense of togetherness and camaraderie that develops with each production, as well as the incredible talent we come to appreciate in one another, is truly magical. My favourite shows were Les Misérables and West Side Story, where I feel I developed greatly as both a singer and a dancer, and from which I formed some of my closest friendships. Next year I will be heading to university to study English and Music, both of which were nurtured and inspired throughout my time at Shebbear. I would like to thank Rev Lancaster and Mrs Hastings, who never failed to stimulate my intellectual curiosity by giving me different books to read and engaging in some of the most critical discussions about our favourite Byronic Heroes, and who dedicated so much of their free time into helping me achieve my academic goals.
Likewise, I am deeply grateful to Mrs Parker and Mrs Sadler-Smith for their encouragement and dedication in helping me develop my musical abilities. Although I am often recognised for my singing today, it all began at the end of Year 10, when I was singing Adele’s Someone Like You and Mrs SadlerSmith happened to hear me. She eagerly put me on the Assembly Hall stage to perform it discovering a talent that I never knew I had, and which has now become a significant part of my identity. Both Mrs Sadler-Smith and Mrs Parker are truly remarkable members of staff who pour their hearts into every show and concert, creating unforgettable experiences for us all. Some of my happiest memories also come from boarding. Moving from Spain to a different country and school in the middle of Devon allowed me to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures, some of whom remain some of my closest friends today. I will always be grateful for Miss Taylor’s movie nights, Mr Clewley’s barbecues, and the countless sleepovers with my friends. Throughout my time at Shebbear, I have always felt valued and supports, and over time it has truly become the place I call home. As I leave Shebbear College and step into the wider world, I would like to thank every member of staff and pupil for making my time here so life-changing and memorable, and I hope future pupils embrace every opportunity Shebbear offers, because some of my most valuable memories came from experiences I never expected to enjoy.”

“When I first arrived at Shebbear College in 2016, joining Prep 4 alongside eleven other pupils, I had no idea how much the school would shape the person I would become. Looking back now, having had the privilege of serving as Head of School, I realise that my time here has been defined by one simple thing: saying yes to opportunities. Like many students, my Shebbear journey began with a few unexpected experiences. Within weeks of arriving, Mrs Johnstone, my Prep 4 teacher, had recruited me into the Prep netball team. My "talent" apparently made me the ideal Wing Defence, although I vaguely remember touching the ball only a handful of times all season! Being the only boy on the team certainly made it memorable, but if I'm honest, the match teas afterwards were probably the highlight. One of the greatest gifts Shebbear has given me has been a love of performing. My journey on stage began in Grease in 2022, where I had the privilege of performing alongside my sister, Charlotte, who played Sandy. After that, I had the opportunity to play Rapunzel's Prince in Into the Woods, Marius in Les Misérables and Tony in West Side Story. Those productions not only developed my confidence as a performer but also gave me friendships and memories that will stay with me for life. Another unforgettable experience for me was being part of the last two Sixth Form pantomimes: Nativity Goes Wrong and Robin Hood. I was fortunate enough to be heavily involved in co-writing several scenes for Nativity Goes Wrong and even helped design and build some of the set. Both productions were enormous fun, and the highlight was definitely Henry's interpretation of Nanny Nora. A significant chapter of my Shebbear journey was Ten Tors. The training weekends, the early starts, the exhausting walks and the occasional bog taught me resilience, teamwork and perseverance in a way that very few experiences can. Like all the opportunities I have mentioned, I would encourage everyone to give it a go. It really is a one-of-a-kind experience. Serving as Head of School, alongside Lucia, has been one of the greatest privileges of my time here. It has been an honour to represent such a supportive and close-knit community, and I wish every success to Jay and Natasha as they take on the role next year. So please keep your eyes open, say yes to the opportunities school life throws at you, even if something feels outside your comfort zone. You never know which opportunity will become the one you remember most.”

A LEVEL RESULTS 2025 There were smiles all round at Shebbear College on Results Day as our Upper Sixth students celebrated an excellent set of A-Level and BTEC results, with some truly exceptional individual achievements. The vast majority secured places at their first-choice university, with nearly half heading off to prestigious Russell Group institutions. The Class of 2025 went on to study a wide and impressive range of degree subjects—from STEM courses such as Computer Science, Medicine, Forensic Science and Chemistry, to Politics & International Relations, Business, Law, Drama and Theology. Students are taking up places at top universities including the University of St Andrews, University of Exeter, University of Leeds, Durham University and the University of Bath. In a particularly talented Performing Arts cohort, several students have earned places on specialist Drama and Music courses, including at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) and BIMM Music Institute. Among the standout achievers were Head of School Sebastian and Deputy Head of School Alice, who both achieved an incredible four A*s in their A-levels and have secured places at their chosen universities. Sebastian, who achieved A*A*A*A* in Computer Science, Maths, Physics and Further Maths, is heading to the University of St Andrews to study Computer Science. Results Day marked a double celebration for him as it’s also his 18th birthday!

Alice, who made headlines two years ago when she was one of only a few pupils nationwide to gain twelve grade 9s at GCSE, gained A*A*A*A* in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths. She will be taking a gap year before starting her Medicine degree at the University of Leeds. Other notable successes include Darcey, who will be studying Politics and International Relations at the University of Bath after achieving A* in English Literature, A in Geography and A in Economics, Henry who will be studying Chemistry at Cardiff University and Head of School, Lily who will be reading Theology, Ministry and Mission at Durham University. Performing Arts Scholar Beth secured a place to study Technical Theatre and Stage Management at the world-renowned RADA following a successful application earlier this year, whilst fellow Drama Scholar William – fondly remembered for his iconic role as Monsieur Thénardier in Shebbear’s production of Les Misérables – will be studying Drama at Bath Spa University, and talented musician Jon-Christopher will be reading Popular Music Performance at BIMM University, the UK’s newest university for the creative industries. “I’m so proud of our Upper Sixth – it was brilliant to see so many happy faces this morning! They’ve worked incredibly hard across all their subjects, and many have managed to balance their studies with sporting and musical commitments too. On top of that, they’ve been fantastic role models for our younger pupils, which makes today’s achievements even more special. I’m delighted that so many have secured places at the universities of their choice, and I’m sure they’ll go on to do amazing things. I hope they’ll keep in touch and let us know how they’re getting on! A huge thank you also to our wonderful teachers, who’ve supported and encouraged them through their Sixth Form years. One of the joys of being a small school is that we get to know each pupil so well, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see them heading off to the next exciting chapter in their lives.” - Mr Jenkins

GCSE RESULTS 2025 There was a fantastic atmosphere at Shebbear on GCSE Results Day, as Form 5 (Year 11) pupils gathered with friends, family, and teachers to receive their long-awaited GCSE results. This year’s cohort had faced unique challenges, joining Year 7 in the middle of the Covid pandemic, but despite this, performed exceptionally well in their GCSEs with many achieving highly across all subjects , opening up exciting opportunities for the future. A number of pupils also exceeded their target grades, demonstrating our strong value-added output, which measures how much progress a child has made since their starting point. “I’m incredibly proud of Form 5, and it was a real pleasure to see so many smiling faces this morning as they received their results. Many pupils have successfully balanced their GCSE studies with other passions such as sport and the performing arts, which speaks volumes about their resilience and commitment. Our focus at Sheb is always on helping each pupil achieve their personal best – whatever that looks like for them – and I’m delighted that so many have done just that, often surpassing the grades predicted when they first joined us.”

Heidi celebrated an impressive four Grade 9s, three Grade 8s and two Grade 7s, while classmate Bethany opened her envelope to reveal five Grade 8s and three Grade 7s. Bodie will study Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Geography A-levels after having gained one Grade 9, three Grade 8s, 3 Grade 7s, two Grade 6s and a Grade 5 in his GCSEs. Bodie has juggled his academic studies with a talent in Music and the Performing Arts, having achieved Grade 7 in the Piano and starring as Bernardo in the Senior School Production of West Side Story, as well as completing the Ten Tors Challenge as part of the 45-mile team. This year’s cohort had two sets of twins: Natasha and Sophia and Ben and Ed celebrated together this morning as they opened their envelopes to reveal some excellent results! “I wish Form 5 all the best for the future. I’m looking forward to seeing many of them return to Shebbear for the Sixth Form and I hope that those heading to college for specialist courses will keep in touch. WELCOME BACK TO SHEBBEAR We couldn't believe another academic year was about to start as we welcomed our new Form 1 (Year 7) pupils for their special orientation afternoon on Monday 1st September – very early this year! Arriving a day ahead of the rest of the College, they had the opportunity to explore their new surroundings, meet their classmates, and get to know the staff who will be supporting them throughout their first year. The rest of the school returned on Tuesday, from our youngest ‘Little Explorers’ in the Nursery and those moving up to Reception, to our new Lower Sixth students, ready to take on the challenges and opportunities of their final years. A fantastic start to what promises to be another busy, fun packed and memorable year!

WAKEBOARDING CHAMPIONS! PRE-SEASON PREPARATION At the end of August, our rugby and hockey teams kicked off the new season with an action-packed day of pre-season training. The athletes took part in a full schedule of skill development, tactical drills, competitive games, speed testing, and mobility work, as well as exploring the mental side of sport through workshops on sports psychology and goal setting to ensure they’re physically and mentally ready for the season ahead!

At the end of August, sisters Kitty (Form 4) and Violet (Prep 6) competed at the UK Wakeboarding Nationals, after qualifying last year. Both girls put on incredible performances, with Kitty finishing second in the U14 age group, and Violet being crowned U11s Champion! Fantastic achievements — well done!

360@SHEB RETURNS WITH A BUZZ OF ACTIVITY Our innovative co-curricular programme, 360@Sheb, returned once again for the new academic year, giving pupils a unique experience that builds confidence and develops skills beyond the classroom. In the first Friday session of the term, pupils took part in an exciting range of activities at various locations across Devon, from surfing and gig rowing to golf, tennis, climbing, gym sessions and horse riding… plus loads more options back at school!

A STRONG SPORTING START TO THE MICHAELMAS TERM The new term brought an exciting and encouraging start to sport at Shebbear, with rugby and hockey taking centre stage. Across all age groups, students have shown commitment, resilience and a clear determination to improve. In rugby, there has been excellent development throughout the season, with teams steadily building their performances and working cohesively as units. The focus on skill progression and teamwork was evident, with players gaining confidence week by week. The season concluded with a mixture of wins and losses, but there was a strong sense of progress and achievement across all squads .The teams also attended development days and festivals, where they benefited from specialist coaching, gaining valuable skills and insights to take back into their school matches. Girls’ rugby has been a particular highlight this term, continuing to go from strength to strength. It was fantastic to see girls representing the school in fixtures across a range of age groups, many for the first time. Their enthusiasm, determination and willingness to embrace new challenges bodes extremely well for the future of the sport at Shebbear. On the hockey pitch, there have been equally impressive performances. All teams have demonstrated growing confidence and a developing tactical understanding of the game. The teams have all shown great composure and awareness, applying what they have learned in training to competitive matches with increasing effectiveness. Both the 1st rugby and 1st hockey teams also began preparations for the Rendcomb tournament, held in November. This was a fantastic opportunity to compete against strong opposition, and both teams rose to the occasion with determination and spirit. It proved to be a valuable and memorable experience, with some excellent performances on display. Alongside the core sports, our basketball teams also made excellent progress this term, showing growing confidence and skill development. In football, it was encouraging to see strong performances across multiple age groups, with our U12, U13 and U16 boys competing in both the ESFA and ISFA Cups, alongside our U13 and U15 girls. All teams progressed through several rounds, demonstrating determination and teamwork, and gaining valuable experience to build on in the term ahead. P18

Their presence brought a vibrant international dimension to the Sixth Form, and we hope they returned home with many wonderful experiences and lasting memories.

Life as a boarder at Shebbear is always full of variety, with a weekend schedule designed to offer something for everyone. Alongside regular sports fixtures, pupils can enjoy a wide range of activities including music, drama, art, and cookery, as well as gym sessions and team sports. From horse riding and surfing at the beach to climbing trips, theme park visits, gokarting, paintballing, and ice skating, there is never a dull moment. Quieter outings such as cinema trips, bowling, shopping, and theatre visits also provide the perfect balance. It’s been a brilliant start, with plenty more adventures to come!

NEW ON THE MENU: GCSE FOOD PREPARATION AND NUTRITION We were excited to launch Food Preparation and Nutrition as part of our GCSE curriculum this year - making Shebbear College one of the few independent schools in the area to offer this exciting and practical course. Our Form 4s (Year 10) rolled up their sleeves for their first practical at the start of term, creating a delicious homemade fish pie that showcased both skill and flavour, a fantastic introduction to the subject. The AQA course blends hands-on cooking with essential nutrition knowledge, helping students build confidence in the kitchen and develop skills for life.

SOUTH WEST SUCCESS AT THE BRITISH EVENTING CHAMPIONSHIPS In September, the British Eventing Youth Championships took place at the beautiful Chillington Hall, and we were thrilled to have three Shebbear riders selected to represent the South West. Anaya and Annabelle (Form 3) were chosen for the 90 team, while Emma (Form 1) earned her place on the 80 team, a fantastic achievement for all three riders. A special congratulations goes to Emma, who joined Shebbear in Form 1 following an outstanding summer in the saddle. Among her many successes, she competed at the Youth Dressage Home Nations Championships and won her section at the Intermediate Dressage Pony Club Championships.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
– FROM PLANT TO PLATE!
September may have arrived with its fair share of drizzle, but that didn’t dampen our spirits! The second week back marked the return of Environmental Education, and it was fantastic to be back out exploring, learning, and connecting with nature, even if we had to dodge a few showers along the way. Form 3 also completed their Plant to Plate module this month, harvesting the potatoes they planted last term, before cooking and eating them! Hands-on learning at its finest! P24

A CELEBRATION OF STORIES AND CREATIVITY We were delighted to welcome authors Gareth P. Jones and Lisa Williamson to Shebbear as part of the Appledore Book Festival. Prep 5 & 6 had a brilliant time solving mysteries with Gareth, while Form 4 & 5 were inspired by Lisa’s journey and creative writing workshop. MUSIC AND MOVES FOR FORM 1 & 2 The much-anticipated Form 1 and 2 Disco once again proved to be a standout event of the term, offering pupils a lively evening filled with music, dancing and plenty of laughter. From the moment it began, the dance floor was full, with everyone joining in, showcasing their moves and enjoying time with friends. It provided a brilliant way to celebrate the end of the half term, leaving everyone with happy memories. We’re already looking forward to the next one!

Congratulations to Violet and Henry, who were appointed as Head Girl and Head Boy, and who have led the team with enthusiasm and commitment. RETURN WITH SOME EXCITING SESSIONS Our Scholars’ Masterclasses returned for the 2025–26 academic year, offering pupils a rich and varied programme of enrichment opportunities across sport, academics, music, art and drama. Our Sports Scholars welcomed Peter Hill from Devon Wado-Ryu Karate for a dynamic masterclass focused on authentic Wado-Ryu Karate-Do. The session highlighted the values of integrity and respect in sport, reinforcing key messages we share with our pupils. A standout moment was learning a 20-move kata, which challenged and inspired everyone involved. Meanwhile, our Art Scholars explored the delicate craft of papercutting in a workshop led by Bristol-based artist Sarah Dennis. Pupils experimented with intricate techniques and created beautifully tactile designs, developing both skill and creativity.
Our Music Scholars were treated to an inspirational recital by the Cameron Mills Group, led by Old Shebbearian Cameron Mills. The session included a Q&A about careers in the music industry and an interactive workshop that gave students a hands-on taste of professional performance. Drama and Performing Arts Scholars took centre stage in a Scholars’ Masterclass with the Shakespeare Schools Foundation, bringing Shakespeare’s words to life through the inspiring ‘Play in a Day’ workshop, whilst our Academic masterclass involved pupils crafting their own speeches and presenting them on camera, with several entries entered into the ISA Public Speaking Competition. All Scholars at Shebbear have the opportunity to attend a series of area-specific masterclasses throughout the year, as well as being part of the Scholars’ Dinner in the Trinity term, which celebrates the achievements of our pupils throughout the year. LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM FOR OUR YOUNGEST SHEBBEARIANS At Shebbear College, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door, and our youngest pupils have been proving just how exciting education can be when it’s hands-on and full of adventure! Reception and Pre-Prep pupils have been heading to Beach School each week, where they explore the coast through geography, wildlife studies, and visits to local businesses. These sessions spark curiosity and help children connect with the world around them in meaningful ways. Meanwhile, our Nursery children have been becoming ‘Little Farmers’ every Friday, meeting a new animal each week and bringing their farmyard learning to life. From feeding goats to cuddling rabbits, these experiences are helping to build confidence, empathy, and a love of nature. PREP 4 TRAVEL BACK IN TIME AT HEATREE ACTIVITY CENTRE Prep 4 pupils stepped back into the world of Bronze and Stone Age settlers during an immersive visit to Heatree Activity Centre. The hands-on experience brought history to life, allowing pupils to explore how early communities lived, worked and survived. Throughout the day, pupils took part in a range of engaging activities, including crafting spears, building shelters and trying their hand at milling oats, followed, of course, by tasting their very own porridge. Creativity was also on display as they sculpted clay creations inspired by the ancient period. The visit provided a memorable and interactive way to deepen their understanding of early human history, with pupils fully embracing the opportunity to learn through experience.

ANOTHER EPIC CLUB RUGBY FESTIVAL We welcomed 12 talented Under-10 teams this October for another highly successful Club Rugby Festival, delivering a full day of exciting and competitive rugby. The event, led by the Shebbear College coaching team, showcased impressive skill, teamwork and enthusiasm from all involved. Throughout the day, players demonstrated excellent energy and sportsmanship, making for a thrilling atmosphere both on and off the pitch. It was encouraging to see such a positive display of teamwork and respect across all teams. At the end of the festival we had a presentation of School Values medals, awarded to players who best exemplified the ethos of Shebbear College. Pupils fully immersed themselves in the experience, discovering what life was like in medieval times and engaging with the rich history of the castle. A CELEBRATION OF READING ACROSS GENERATIONS The Prep School children enjoyed a truly special visit just after half term, with the introduction of our very first Grandparents’ Reading Café. This heartwarming occasion saw pupils and their grandparents come together to share a love of reading, creating special moments across generations. Tied in with a visit from The Bookery in Crediton, who brought with them a wonderful selection of their top titles of the year, it was a really enjoyable event for all involved, highlighting the power of storytelling.

CHILDREN IN NEED This year we raised an impressive total of nearly £600 for Children in Need, with pupils and staff alike getting involved in a range of creative and energetic fundraising activities and stalls. From games to sweet treats, there was something for everyone to enjoy, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere across the school. A huge thank you to everyone who donated to and ran the stalls and a special shoutout to Way’s waffle stall which was an absolute crowdpleaser!
A FANTASTIC DAY OF SPORT AT RENDCOMB COLLEGE Our 1st rugby and hockey teams travelled to Rendcomb College for an action-packed day of sport. The 1st XV rugby team took part in the Jonny Wilkinson Cup. Facing five different schools, they showed grit and determination throughout a physically demanding day, putting in some impressive performances. A great experience for the boys, who continue to grow as a team. Meanwhile, the 1st XI hockey team battled strong opposition in a competitive tournament. With heart, determination and skill, the girls improved with every match - a promising sign for the future with so many young players establishing themselves at first team level. SHEBBEAR FOOTBALLERS PROGRESS THROUGH THE ESFA AND ISFA CUPS Our football teams saw some fantastic success in both the English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) Cup and the Independent Schools’ Football Association (ISFA) Cup this year. Entering boys’ and girls’ teams into these prestigious national competitions provides valuable opportunities for pupils to test their skills against high-quality opposition from across the country. This season, we saw excellent progress from a number of teams, with the U12, U13 and U16 boys, alongside the U13 and U15 girls, all advancing through the early rounds of their respective competitions. Throughout the tournament, players demonstrated great determination, resilience and teamwork, rising to the challenge in a series of competitive and closely contested matches. Across every fixture, the teams showed commitment and enthusiasm, representing Shebbear with pride. Their hard work and positive attitude were evident both on and off the pitch, with matches played in an excellent spirit and a strong sense of sportsmanship. FORM 5 CELEBRATE IN STYLE AT THEIR WINTER DINNER Form 5 pupils dressed to impress for their formal Winter Dinner at The Old Foundry in Bideford – and what a fantastic evening it was! The event provided a wonderful opportunity for students to come together outside the classroom, enjoy a delicious meal, and celebrate the end of a busy term in style. The atmosphere was full of laughter and festive cheer as everyone embraced the occasion, making it a night to remember. A huge thank you to the staff who organised the evening and to The Old Foundry for hosting such a special event. It was the perfect way for Form 5 to mark the start of the Christmas season and reflect on their achievements this term.

This year saw the exciting launch of Enrichment Days in the Senior School, offering pupils a diverse range of workshops and experiences designed to extend learning beyond the classroom. The initiative provides valuable opportunities for pupils to explore new interests, develop skills and engage with subjects in a more dynamic and hands-on way. Older students benefited from a series of focused careers and skills workshops, helping to prepare them for future pathways and offering insight into life beyond school. Meanwhile, younger year groups enjoyed memorable trips that brought their studies to life. Form 3 travelled to We The Curious in Bristol, where an interactive day of discovery sparked curiosity and encouraged scientific exploration. Forms 1 and 2 experienced the magic of live theatre with a visit to the Theatre Royal in Plymouth to watch The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. The performance captivated pupils, immersing them in the world of Narnia and bringing a much-loved story vividly to life.

DISCOVER SHEB! This year’s Discover Sheb event returned with a Christmas theme, complete with a visit from Father Christmas himself! We welcomed over 70 children to the event, including some of our own Prep School pupils, for an action-packed morning! The children took part in two activity sessions during the morning, choosing from a range of options all led by our brilliant teachers! From Sport, Cookery, Cheerleading, Science, Music, and Jewellery Design to Dance, Little Explorers, and Nature Detectives, there really was something for all ages! Our Senior School scholars came along to help with the activities, and we received a great deal of feedback on how engaged and supportive they were, not just with our young guests, but also in helping their own teachers to deliver the activities.

LIGHTS, CAMEL, ACTION... THE SEQUIN! What a ‘Strictly’ fabulous afternoon it was at the Prep Nativity this year! Our talented stars from Nursery to Prep 4 lit up the stage with this year’s performance, bringing sparkle, laughter, and festive cheer to a packed audience. The production, inspired by the glitz and glamour of Strictly Come Dancing, combined brilliant acting, joyful singing, and dazzling dance routines. From the tiniest performers in Nursery to the confident Prep 4 pupils, every child played their part perfectly, creating a show full of energy and heart. Parents, staff, and friends were treated to a spectacular display of creativity and teamwork, and the smiles on stage said it all! A huge well done to all the children and a big thank you to the staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this Nativity one to remember.

ROBIN HOOD ROCKS - OH YES IT DOES! The Sixth Form delivered another show-stopping performance with this year’s pantomime, Robin Hood! From Eva and the Sheriff’s hilarious attempts to steal Maid Marian (Rowan) away from Robin Hood (Bodie), to Dame Nanny (Henry) swooping in with brilliant comic timing, the cast kept the audience entertained from start to finish. A special shout-out goes to Dylan, the mastermind behind the scenes – producer, tech wizard, and all-round superstar – for ensuring everything ran smoothly. The evening wasn’t just about laughter and fun; it also raised nearly £600 for Young Minds, supporting mental health initiatives for young people. Well done to everyone involved!

CAROLS, CANDLELIGHT AND CHRISTMAS CHEER Our Prep and Senior School Carol Services were, as always, a much-loved highlight of the Shebbear College calendar, bringing the whole community together to celebrate the season. The Prep School Carol Service, held in the afternoon, was a heartwarming occasion filled with festive spirit. The children sang beautifully and performed with great confidence, filling the space with joy and excitement. It was wonderful to see so many families and friends there to support them, helping to make the event feel extra special. Later in the week, the Whole School Candlelit Service created a magical atmosphere for an unforgettable evening. With the soft glow of candlelight, stunning performances from our choirs and enthusiastic singing from everyone present, it was a perfect way to come together as a community. The evening ended with delicious festive refreshments, adding to the sense of celebration. Both services were a wonderful way to mark the Christmas season!

CHRISTMAS AT SHEB! Once the Christmas tree was up, it could only mean one thing - the festive season had officially arrived at Shebbear College! The final weeks of term were bursting with Christmas cheer, with a whole host of events bringing the community together in celebration. Highlights included the charming Pre-Prep Nativity, full of festive joy, and the ever-popular Sixth Form Panto, which had everyone laughing along. We also enjoyed the beautiful Prep School Carol Service, alongside the magical Whole School Candlelit Service, where music and candlelight created a truly special atmosphere. Festive meals for the Sixth Form and our boarders added to the celebrations, while the House Song Competition brought plenty of energy and school spirit. And of course, no Sheb Christmas would be complete without Christmas Jumper Day, a delicious Christmas lunch, and those all-important end-of-term celebrations!

SHEBBEAR RIDERS CROWNED COUNTY CHAMPIONS! Our equestrian team enjoyed a fantastic day at the NSEA County Qualifiers, delivering an outstanding set of results and plenty of memorable moments.
A WARM WELCOME BACK FOR THE LENT TERM! The school community returned in January full of energy, enthusiasm and excitement as we began the Lent Term together.
A special highlight was cheering on seven-year-old Harley as he competed in his very first Preliminary Dressage test. Across the day, our riders produced superb clear rounds and accurate dressage tests to be crowned Devon County Champions in both Open Show Jumping and Open Dressage. Congratulations also go to Annabelle and Flynn and Isobel and Cassie, who both claimed individual dressage titles – a tremendous achievement and a wonderful reward for all their hard work and dedication.

with Cognition Learning returned for the Lent Term, session of Robot Sumo! Pupils designed, built and programmed their own robots before putting them to the test in a series of competitive battles. There was plenty of creativity, teamwork and problemsolving on display as they refined their designs and cheered each other on. A fantastic start to another term of hands-on STEM learning and innovation!

A NEW TERM OF SCHOLARS’ MASTERCLASSES Our Scholars’ Masterclasses got off to a flying start this term, with our Academic Scholars launching the programme with part two of their Public Speaking workshop. They spent the morning crafting and refining their own speeches before presenting them on camera, developing both their confidence and communication skills. Several of the speeches were entered into the ISA Public Speaking Competition (more on this later!) Meanwhile, our Drama & Performing Arts Scholars threw themselves into an action-fuelled Stage Combat and Filmmaking Masterclass. From learning the techniques behind convincing stage fights and swordplay to understanding how action sequences are planned and filmed, they embraced every aspect of the experience. Our scholars then stepped behind the camera to create pre-visualisations for their own action scenes, combining creativity, teamwork and technical expertise. Art Scholars enjoyed an inspiring masterclass with Cornwall-based artist, Stuart Law, who led a beautiful workshop on creating Japanese Tanzaku watercolour flowers. They produced some stunning pieces and learnt new techniques to perfect their painting. These masterclasses continue to provide exciting opportunities for our Scholars to deepen their talents, broaden their horizons and explore new creative avenues.

A NEW TERM OF SPORT IS UNDERWAY! Our pupils threw themselves into the busy sporting calendar of matches, tournaments and training sessions this term with their usual enthusiasm and team spirit. This term, netball and football took centre stage, with teams from across the school representing us in a full calendar of local and regional competitions. We have seen some fantastic results, with players demonstrating real progress, determination and teamwork on the courts and pitches. In netball, a highlight was our U13 team qualifying for the ISA National Finals in March. The competition was fierce, but the girls showed outstanding determination and fought hard throughout the day. In football, our U11 team had an incredible experience at the ISA National Finals held at St George's Park. Every single player rose to the occasion and proved they can compete with some of the best schools in the country. They should be unbelievably proud of their performance and the way they represented the College. Alongside these main sports, pupils have also enjoyed exciting opportunities in Rugby 7s and girls' rugby, both of which saw fantastic levels of participation and some impressive performances. In March, we returned to the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens tournament with three teams – the U18 boys, the U14 girls (our first girls' team to attend) and the U13 boys. All three teams rose to the challenge and can be very proud of what they achieved – more on Rosslyn Park later! Our U13 and U15 Girls’ Rugby teams also both achieved outstanding success at the ISA South West Rugby 7s tournament – winning all their matches and securing two trophies for Shebbear College. Cross-country was also a highlight this term, with our runners enjoying a successful year. Several pupils took part in the Bremco North Devon Cross Country Competition, where Mawgan (Prep 5) took second place at the final and finished fourth overall in the league, bringing home a trophy.

In March, Violet, Mawgan, Poppy and Neve also travelled to Himley Hall in Birmingham for the ISA National Cross Country Finals – a fantastic experience for all of them. L6 superstar Eleanor took the top spot at the South West Schools Cross Country Championships in February, earning her place at the English Schools Cross Country Championships in March, where she finished an incredible third! Eleanor achieved this result while competing as one of the younger athletes in the senior girls' race – a remarkable achievement.

ROUNSEFELL DINNER Our Sixth Form students enjoyed a memorable night at the beautiful Buckland House in Buckland Filleigh as they gathered for the much loved annual Rounsefell Dinner. The evening began with a delicious three course meal prepared by The Black River Inn, before students took to the dance floor to enjoy live music from local band The Waves Collective. Joining them for the celebration were members of the Sixth Form tutor team, Mr Jenkins, and guest speaker Jamie Sanders, President of the Old Shebbearians’ Association. Jamie shared fond memories of his own time at the college and spoke about the experience of becoming an Old Shebbearian. Heads of School, Lucia and Albert, also addressed their peers during the dinner, offering thoughtful reflections on the year so far. The Rounsefell Dinner remains a cherished tradition in the Sixth Form calendar – an opportunity for students to come together, celebrate their achievements, and enjoy one of the many social events that make their final years at school so special. It was, once again, a wonderful evening for all involved.

After the dramatic intensity of West Side Story and Les Misérables in recent years, this year’s production brought a fresh burst of energy, leaving audiences laughing, clapping, and dancing in their seats. At the heart of the show were our two exceptional leading ladies. Evie, starring as Deloris Van Cartier, delivered a standout performance, carrying much of the production with outstanding confidence and skill. Alongside her, Yvie, who only joined Shebbear in September, flourished in her role and impressed audiences with a stellar performance. Together, they formed a remarkable onstage partnership – their chemistry, sisterhood, and mutual support shining through both during the show and beyond the curtain call. The supporting cast brought the production to life with humour, heart, and impeccable timing. The ensemble of nuns – Hattie, Rowan, Annabelle, Violet, Lucy and Billie – delivered performances full of character, warmth, and sharp comedic instinct. Their organisation and dedication, both on stage and during rehearsals, contributed to the show’s strong musical and dramatic impact. In a brilliant contrast, Barney gave a superb performance as the show’s villain, supported by the hilarious trio of Rohan, Jack and Henry, whose scenes were enthusiastically received by every audience. Ethan shone as Eddie Souther, bringing his own comic flair to the role – including a nowlegendary costume change!

OLD SHEBBEARIANS ASSOCIATION REUNION DINNER Over 100 Old Shebbearians - from recent leavers to longstanding alumni - turned out in force for the 117th OSA Reunion Dinner at the RAF Club in Mayfair. After a delicious three course meal, there were speeches from Mr Jenkins, our Heads of School, Lucia and Albert, and outgoing OSA President Jamie Sanders, who officially handed over to our new President, Kit Hale. Special guests this year were Head of Ruddle House - Chris Deakes, Chair of Governors - Ronell Selzer and COO of Inspired Learning Group Justin Spanswick. Always a fantastic event, it's amazing to see how strong the Shebbear community remains, no matter how many years have passed! EXPLORING ROSEMOOR'S WINTER WONDERS Prep 3 and 4 enjoyed a wonderful day at RHS Garden Rosemoor, combining outdoor learning with plenty of exploration. Pupils took part in a hands-on Rocks and Soils workshop, discovering more about the fascinating world beneath our feet through a range of interactive activities. They also had the chance to explore Rosemoor's beautiful winter gardens, spotting seasonal colours and signs of nature as they wandered through the grounds. A fantastic day of learning, discovery and fresh air for all involved!
SHEBBEAR DELEGATES SHINE AT THE MODEL UNITED NATIONS Our Model United Nations team represented a range of global delegations at the MUN Conference hosted by Bristol Grammar School. Throughout the day, pupils demonstrated exceptional commitment as they collaborated with delegates from other schools, debated pressing world issues and worked to find diplomatic solutions. The conference provided a valuable opportunity for students to experience the structure and challenge of the United Nations. By stepping into the shoes of realworld diplomats, participants developed key skills including leadership, negotiation, public speaking, collaboration and critical thinking. Our Shebbear delegates approached every committee session with enthusiasm and maturity, earning praise for their thoughtful contributions and willingness to engage with complex global topics. STAFF TAKE THE CROWN IN HOUSE PANCAKE RACE! There was plenty of excitement and laughter as pupils and staff gathered for our annual House Pancake Race. Representatives from each House - as well as a staff team - competed to see who could race to the finish line while successfully flipping their pancake along the way. After a closely fought contest, it was the staff team who emerged victorious, claiming the title of Pancake Race Champions. Way House put in a fantastic performance and finished hot on their heels, making for an entertaining and competitive race. A great opportunity for the whole school community to come together and enjoy some light-hearted House spirit, with plenty of cheering from the sidelines!
A GHOST STORY Our GCSE and A-Level Drama students enjoyed an inspiring visit to the Theatre Royal Plymouth to watch A Ghost Story. The performance provided a valuable opportunity to experience live theatre and see a professional production in action. As they prepare for their summer examinations, students were able to observe a range of dramatic techniques, staging choices and performances that will support their analysis work in the classroom. The trip also offered a final chance to enjoy the unique atmosphere of live theatre before the exam season began, leaving them with plenty of ideas and inspiration to take back to their studies.
A SPECIAL VISIT FROM THE POLICE Our Nursery and Pre-Prep children enjoyed a memorable visit from officers from Devon and Cornwall Police. The children learned about the important role the police play in helping and protecting our communities, while discovering more about the day-to-day work of police officers.

PREP SCHOOL PERFORMERS SHINE IN INFORMAL CONCERT There was plenty to celebrate at our Prep School Informal Concert just after half term, as pupils treated family, friends and staff to an afternoon of music and drama. From confident performances to first-time appearances on stage, every pupil played their part in making the concert such a success. It was wonderful to see so many young performers sharing their talents and growing in confidence in front of an audience.
WAKEBOARDING SUCCESS IN SPAIN Kitty (Form 4) and Violet (Prep 6) enjoyed an incredible opportunity over half term as they attended the Great British Wakeboarding Camp in Luna, Spain.
A TRIP THROUGH TOY HISTORY Our Pre-Prep children stepped back in time during a visit to Tiverton Museum, where they explored the fascinating history of toys. From traditional favourites of the past to more modern playthings, pupils enjoyed discovering how toys have changed over the years and learning about the ways children played in different generations. The visit brought history to life, giving the children the chance to see a variety of toys up close and compare them with the toys they enjoy today. P66

The invitation was earned through their outstanding performances at the 2025 National Championships, giving both girls the chance to train alongside some of the UK's most talented young wakeboarders. Throughout the camp, they developed their skills, built confidence and experienced the dedication and discipline required at an elite level of the sport. The experience provided valuable inspiration for the future, helping both girls to grow as athletes while creating memories that will last a lifetime. Congratulations to Kitty and Violet on this fantastic achievement and for representing Shebbear so brilliantly.

Joined by Atti, Ellie, Jess and Josh, the team put in another strong set of performances to round off a busy weekend of racing.
JUNIOR MATHS TEAM TAKES ON REGIONAL CHALLENGE Our Junior Maths Team travelled to Exmouth Community College to take part in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge regional final, competing against 15 schools from across the South West. Despite being a year younger than many of the teams they faced, our mathematicians put in a fantastic performance, tackling a series of challenging rounds that tested their problem-solving, teamwork and quick thinking. The competition was a great opportunity to put their mathematical skills to the test and gain experience against strong opposition. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and the way they represented the College throughout the day.

FORM 2 DISCOVER A WORLD OF PLANTS AT THE EDEN PROJECT As part of Enrichment Day, Form 2 enjoyed an exciting trip to the Eden Project, exploring its famous biomes and spectacular gardens. The visit gave pupils the chance to discover plants from around the world and experience a variety of different environments, from lush rainforest landscapes to Mediterranean climates. Along the way, they learned more about the incredible diversity of the natural world and the important role plants play in our lives. One of the highlights of the day was taking part in a workshop exploring how plants survive in some of the planet's most extreme conditions. Pupils were fascinated to learn about the clever adaptations that help plants thrive in challenging environments, from deserts to tropical rainforests.
FORM 1 ENJOY A WILD DAY OUT AT PAIGNTON ZOO Form 1 swapped the classroom for the great outdoors as they headed to Paignton Zoo for an exciting enrichment day. With a science focus throughout the visit, pupils had the chance to see a huge range of animals up close and learn more about habitats, adaptation and conservation. The day was packed with discovery, from observing fascinating species to exploring the zoo's many exhibits. To top it all off, the weather played its part and they were lucky enough to enjoy some sunshine as they made their way around!

WORLD BOOK DAY World Book Day was once again a highlight of the Shebbear calendar, bringing a shared love of stories to every corner of the school. In the Senior School, tutor groups embraced the spirit of the day by adopting a different book each and transforming into its characters. Corridors came alive with imaginative costumes, from literary classics to contemporary favourites, as students and staff celebrated the power of reading to inspire, entertain and connect. Meanwhile, the Prep School took a wonderfully cosy approach, spending the day in pyjamas as they celebrated the joy of reading for pleasure. The relaxed atmosphere set the tone for a day focused on imagination, comfort and the simple delight of getting lost in a good book. Across the whole school, students enjoyed a series of activities including a Drop Everything And Read session, a lively book exchange, creative library events, and a live author experience that encouraged pupils to think like writers and storytellers. DOUBLE VICTORY FOR SHEBBEAR GIRLS AT ISA RUGBY 7S Huge congratulations to our U13 and U15 Girls’ Rugby teams, who both achieved outstanding success at the ISA South West Rugby 7s tournament – winning all their matches and securing two trophies for Shebbear College. Both teams demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork and determination throughout the tournament, showcasing fast, fearless rugby and representing the school with pride. Their unbeaten performances highlight the incredible progress of girls’ rugby at Shebbear and the passion our players bring to the sport. These victories are an inspiring milestone for the programme, with the girls leading the way and setting a fantastic example for future teams.

A VOICE AMONG THE NATION'S BEST March saw a fantastic achievement for Lower Sixth pupil Eleanor, who earned a place in the national finals of the ISA Public Speaking Competition at the
Gallery Schools' Exhibition. The exhibition showcases artwork from pupils across local schools, with entries judged by The Arts Society, making this an impressive achievement for all three students. Their success is a wonderful recognition of their creativity, talent and hard work. It was fantastic to see their artwork celebrated alongside that of other young artists from across the region, and we are incredibly proud of what they have achieved.
University of Cambridge. After progressing through the earlier rounds of the competition, Eleanor impressed judges with her original speech, The Power of a Question. Her thoughtful ideas, confident delivery and ability to connect with an audience helped secure her place among the country's top young public speakers. Reaching the national final was a tremendous accomplishment and a reflection of the hard work, preparation and enthusiasm Eleanor has shown throughout the competition. Competing on such a prestigious stage was a valuable experience and one that she can be incredibly proud of. BRITISH SCIENCE WEEK BRINGS LEARNING TO LIFE There was plenty of excitement in the Science Department as pupils celebrated British Science Week with a range of handson activities, investigations and challenges. Form 1 put their scientific knowledge to the test by exploring neutralisation through a series of practical experiments, before turning their attention to engineering as they designed and built their own boats. Pupils enjoyed testing their creations and discovering which designs were the most successful on the water. Form 2 also took on an engineering challenge, designing and testing their very own rocket cars. Experimenting with different shapes and ideas, pupils learned more about forces, motion and aerodynamics as they raced their creations and evaluated their results. One of the biggest highlights of the week was welcoming five newly hatched chicks into the department. Pupils loved watching the eggs hatch and following the chicks' first few days of life, gaining a real-world understanding of life cycles and animal development. Of course, the chance to enjoy a few fluffy cuddles along the way was an added bonus!

BUILDING SUCCESS AT LEGO LEAGUE Our Lego League teams enjoyed a fantastic two days at the FIRST Lego League Regional Qualifiers, with three teams representing the school across a range of STEM challenges. Pupils were judged on Robot Game, Robot Design, the Innovation Project, and Core Values, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate engineering skill, creativity, problemsolving and teamwork. All three teams rose to the occasion and delivered impressive performances. We are especially proud to share two brilliant achievements: Girls’ Team – Winners of the Senior Innovation Project Prep Team – Winners of the Junior Innovation Project These awards recognise the hard work, thoughtful design and collaboration shown by both groups, and reflect the enthusiasm and dedication evident throughout the event. A NATIONAL STAGE FOR YVIE One standout achievement of the 2025-26 year came from Lower 6th student Yvie, who represented the College at the prestigious ISA Young Musician Competition 2026. Held at St Hilda's College, University of Oxford, the national finals brought together some of the country's most talented young musicians. Having earned her place as a finalist earlier in the year, Yvie took to the stage with confidence, maturity and real musical flair, delivering a performance that was both polished and deeply expressive. While she narrowly missed out on the top prize, reaching the national finals is an exceptional achievement and a testament to her talent, commitment and countless hours of dedication to her craft. Yvie's performance was a proud moment for the entire Shebbear community and showcased the high standard of music-making that continues to thrive at the College. OUTSTANDING LAMDA RESULTS Huge congratulations to all our Prep and Senior School pupils who recently took their LAMDA examinations. U13S TAKE THE NATIONAL STAGE Our U13 netball team made us proud at the ISA National Finals in March, delivering an outstanding performance against tough competition. The girls showed exceptional determination and resilience throughout the day, supporting one another and giving their all in every game. THIRD BEST IN THE COUNTRY! Another term, another remarkable sporting achievement for our talented cross-country runner, Eleanor in L6! Competing at the English Schools Cross Country Championships, Eleanor secured an outstanding third-place finish, making her one of the top three runners in the country. Representing Devon in the Senior Girls' race, Eleanor was competing as a younger athlete in the age group, making her achievement even more impressive. GIG NIGHT ROCKS SHEBBEAR Gig Night once again proved why it is one of the highlights of the Shebbear College calendar, bringing together pupils, staff, families and friends for an unforgettable evening of live music. NATIONAL FINALS AND MAKING MEMORIES! Our U11 football team enjoyed an incredible experience at the ISA National Finals at St George's Park this year! Competing against some of the strongest school teams in the country, every player rose to the occasion and showcased their talent, determination and team spirit. The boys should be immensely proud of their performances throughout the tournament and of the way they represented Shebbear College both on and off the pitch. Reaching the national stage is a fantastic achievement in itself, and the experience of playing at England's world-class football centre will be one the team remembers for years to come. EXPLORING CLIMATE CHANGE ON THE COAST Our U6 geographers made the most of a perfect sunny day during a field trip to Bude's coastline, where they investigated the real-world impacts of climate change and rising sea levels. Exploring the coast first hand, students examined how environmental changes are affecting local businesses and communities, bringing classroom learning to life in a meaningful and engaging way. The trip provided a valuable opportunity to see geography in action while developing a deeper understanding of the challenges facing coastal areas today.

Our Prep School pupils enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Eden Project, taking part in a range of exciting and interactive workshops. From 'Puzzling Plants' and 'Rainforest Uncovered' to 'Building in Brazil', the children immersed themselves in hands-on learning and discovered more about the natural world around them. The trip also provided an opportunity to explore the iconic biomes, where pupils experienced a variety of environments and learnt about the fascinating plants, wildlife and ecosystems they contain.
LASER TAG FUN IN THE EVENING SUN! Form 5 and the Sixth Form battled it out in an action-packed evening of Laser Tag, making the most of the glorious sunshine and friendly competition. With plenty of teamwork, strategy and excitement on display, pupils enjoyed a fantastic evening of high-energy fun. Laser Tag events are held for different year groups throughout the year and provide a wonderful opportunity for pupils to build friendships, develop teamwork skills and create lasting memories outside the classroom. Events like these are a great example of Shebbear's commitment to providing enriching experiences that encourage personal growth, strengthen our community spirit and, most importantly, ensure plenty of fun along the way!

The standard of competition was exceptionally high, but both teams rose to the challenge and represented Shebbear College with pride, determination and plenty of skill.

The U18 boys faced three tough fixtures and demonstrated just how much their sevens rugby has developed. They left everything on the pitch, producing some excellent rugby and creating plenty of memorable moments for the parents and supporters who had travelled to cheer them on. Making history as the first Shebbear girls' team to compete at Rosslyn Park, the U14s delivered a truly impressive performance. After overcoming some early nerves, they won all of their group matches to secure a place in the Cup competition, eventually bowing out to a strong Hill House side. The future looks incredibly bright for girls' rugby at Shebbear. With many of these players returning next year, and both U14 and U16 girls' teams set to compete, this year's success feels like just the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

WAFFLE STEALS THE SHOW! Prep School pupils enjoyed a visit from the team at Really Wild Learning, who brought along a fascinating collection of animal visitors for the children to meet and learn about. The interactive experience gave pupils the opportunity to get up close to a range of creatures while discovering more about their habitats, behaviours and adaptations. There was plenty of excitement, curiosity and enthusiasm as the children listened, asked questions and met the animals. One guest, however, proved particularly popular. Waffle the bearded dragon quickly became the star of the show, charming everyone with his character and stealing the spotlight throughout the visit!
MORE MATHS CHALLENGE SUCCESS AWARD RECOGNITION FOR INSPIRED LEARNING GROUP In March we found out that our parent company, Inspired Learning Group (ILG), had been named Chain School of the Year at the StudyTravel Secondary School Awards 2026. The award recognises excellence across a group of schools and highlights the strength of the educational community that supports Shebbear. As part of ILG, the College benefits from shared expertise and opportunities while continuing to offer the close-knit environment and individual approach that make Shebbear so distinctive. The recognition is a reflection of the high standards found across the group, including the dedication and commitment of staff here at Shebbear College.

Congratulations to all of the pupils who took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, where students demonstrated their problemsolving skills and mathematical thinking against competitors from schools across the country. There was also particular success in the Junior Maths Challenge. Taking on a competition aimed at older pupils, Mawgan (Prep 5) achieved a Bronze certificate, while Theo (Prep 5) earned an impressive Gold certificate. Theo's outstanding performance has also secured him a place in next month's Junior Kangaroo Challenge, following a score high enough to qualify for the next stage of the competition.

EASTER FUN ACROSS THE PREP SCHOOL The end of the spring term brought plenty of Easter excitement to the Prep School, with pupils enjoying a range of activities and celebrations in the lead-up to the holidays. One of the highlights was the annual Easter Egg Hunt, which saw children putting their detective skills to the test as they searched for clues and treats around the school grounds. Pupils also came together for the Prep School Easter Service, a special opportunity to reflect on the season and celebrate as a community. Colourful creativity was on display during Wear a Hat Day, with children arriving in a fantastic array of imaginative and brightly decorated hats. There was plenty of excitement in Little Explorers too, where our youngest children enjoyed Easter-themed crafts, activities and lots of seasonal fun. The term ended on a high with the much-anticipated Prep School Disco, where pupils took to the dance floor to celebrate with friends and mark the start of the Easter break.

SPORTS TOUR 2026... IN SPAIN! Over the Easter break, pupils in Forms 1-4 headed to Spain for an unforgettable sports tour packed with competition, sunshine and plenty of memorable experiences. Our footballers and netballers took on a series of fixtures throughout the trip, testing themselves against strong opposition and embracing the opportunity to play in a new environment. The tour culminated in a tournament in Salou, where both teams produced some excellent performances. Competing with determination, teamwork and growing confidence, the teams finished in an impressive third and fourth place respectively, a wonderful reward for all their hard work and commitment. Away from the court and pitch, the tour offered pupils the chance to strengthen friendships, support one another and enjoy everything that comes with travelling as a team. From match days to shared experiences in the Spanish sunshine, the trip created memories that will last for years to come.

BEACH SCHOOL ADVENTURES BEGIN Reception, Prep 1 and Prep 2 pupils enjoyed their first Beach School session of the summer term, making the most of a day by the coast.
100 MILES FOR PERU! Bodie in Lower 6 completed an extraordinary fundraising challenge over the Easter break, in support of the Camps International Expedition to Peru (more on this later!) Over the course of just three days, Bodie walked an incredible 100 miles across Dartmoor, showing remarkable determination, resilience and perseverance every step of the way, fundraising for the expedition, which saw ten of our older students spend four weeks in Peru working alongside local communities on conservation and sustainability projects. To make the achievement even more special, Bodie was welcomed at the finish line by Okehampton & District Round Table, who generously donated £500 towards his fundraising total, providing a fantastic boost to his campaign.

A DAY OF DISCOVERY AT ROSEMOOR Prep 3 and 4 pupils enjoyed a brilliant start to the term with a visit to RHS Garden Rosemoor. During a series of hands-on workshops, the children explored where our food comes from, learnt about the different parts of plants that we eat, and considered the importance of seasonal produce and food miles. There was also plenty of opportunity to get outdoors and explore, with pupils taking part in an invertebrate scavenger hunt around the beautiful gardens, discovering the fascinating creatures that help our ecosystems thrive.
STAFF TAKE THE HONOURS! There was plenty of friendly rivalry on display as staff took on the Sixth Form in the eagerly anticipated hockey match! The match was played in great spirit, with both teams showing plenty of determination and skill. In the end, it was the staff who claimed victory, thanks in no small part to Mr Law, who produced an impressive performance and helped himself to a hat-trick. While the result may have gone the staff's way this time, the Sixth Form put up a strong challenge and can no doubt be expected to come back fighting next year!

A SUMMER OF CRICKET AND ATHLETICS The Trinity Term brought a fantastic season of cricket and athletics at Shebbear College, with pupils making the most of the sunshine and embracing every opportunity to compete, improve and represent the school. Cricket has continued to thrive, with both girls' and boys' teams taking on opponents including Kingsley, West Buckland, Mount Kelly, Plymouth College, St Joseph's, Holsworthy Community College and the Devon Dumplings. Along the way, pupils celebrated a number of victories against local schools, while demonstrating excellent teamwork, determination and sportsmanship. One of the highlights of the season came in June when the U13 cricket team were crowned North Devon 6s champions at West Buckland. The team won three of their four matches against Uffculme, Braunton and Park School to secure the title, with every player making an important contribution throughout the day. There were standout performances with both bat and ball, while the team's collective effort and support for one another helped secure a memorable victory. It has also been a successful athletics season, with Shebbear pupils competing at the North Devon Schools, Devon Schools and ISA South West Championships, producing a number of impressive performances along the way.
Particular congratulations go to those who qualified for the ISA National Athletics Championships at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, an outstanding achievement in itself. James (Form 3) continued his remarkable run of success by winning a silver medal in the discus, making it three consecutive years on the national podium. Mawgan was also part of the South West team's bronze medal-winning 4x100m relay, delivering a superb second leg. The trip to Birmingham also provided a memorable opportunity for pupils to meet GB athlete Alex Bell, adding another special moment to an already successful season. P92

A VISIT TO WAR HORSE VALLEY
A DISTINCTION TO CELEBRATE There was double cause for celebration in the Music Department this term as Dolly (Form 5) and Cherrie (Form 3) both achieved the highest possible result, Distinction, in their Grade 8 music examinations. Dolly earned her Distinction on the flute, while Cherrie achieved the same outstanding result on the piano. Reaching Grade 8 is a significant milestone for any musician and reflects years of commitment, dedication and hard work. Their achievements are made even more impressive by their age. Cherrie was just 13 when she sat her exam, while both girls reached this exceptional standard long before Sixth Form. Music plays a vibrant role in life at Shebbear, and Dolly and Cherrie's success is a wonderful reflection of the talent, enthusiasm and dedication shown by so many of our young musicians. We are incredibly proud of all they have achieved.

Prep 5 and Prep 6 enjoyed an unforgettable visit to War Horse Valley Country Park, where they stepped into the world of Michael Morpurgo's much-loved story, War Horse. During the day, pupils discovered the inspiration behind the novel and learnt more about its historical setting through a fascinating collection of real artefacts. They also had the opportunity to meet the park's animals and explore the beautiful surroundings. One of the highlights of the visit was a trailer ride around the farm, giving pupils a chance to take in the stunning countryside while learning more about the area's connection to the story. The trip brought the book to life in a unique and engaging way, helping pupils deepen their understanding of both the story and the history that inspired it.

QUIZ NIGHT SUCCESS FOR PERU EXPEDITION TEAM Pupils preparing for the Camps International expedition to Peru enjoyed a hugely successful fundraising quiz night, bringing together friends, families and supporters from across the Shebbear community. The event was packed with friendly competition and plenty of fun, helping to raise valuable funds for the expedition. The students spent four weeks in Peru working on conservation and sustainability projects alongside local communities in the summer – read more about the trip later in the magazine! A huge thank you goes to everyone who attended, donated and supported the evening.
A VISIT FROM THE FIRE SERVICE Our Nursery and Pre-Prep children were delighted to welcome some very special visitors when a local fire engine and tri-service team came to school. The children had the opportunity to climb aboard the fire engine, explore the equipment carried by the crew and learn more about the important work of the emergency services. There was plenty of excitement as they tried out the infrared camera, had a turn using the fire hose and listened to the sirens in action. The older children also impressed the firefighters with a series of thoughtful and wellprepared questions, helping them learn even more about life in the emergency services.

ELEANOR'S EXTRAORDINARY SEASON It has been a remarkable year for Eleanor, whose success on the national and international stage has marked her out as one of the country's most talented young distance runners. Having already won the South West Schools Cross Country Championships, finished second in the UK Athletics Cross Challenge, and secured an outstanding third place at the English Schools Cross Country Championships, Eleanor continued her incredible run of form throughout the Trinity term. In May, she travelled to Italy to represent England at the prestigious Trofeo Opitergium International U20 Road Race. Competing against 40 athletes

from across Europe, Eleanor was the first England athlete across the finish line, finishing in an impressive 12th place overall and helping the England U20 team secure fourth place. If that wasn't enough, Eleanor added another major achievement in July when she was crowned English Schools 3000m Champion at the English Schools Athletics Association Track and Field Championships. Competing against the very best young athletes in the country, Eleanor produced a phenomenal performance to take the national title. A TRIP TO SEE WASTE IN ACTION Prep 4-6 enjoyed a fascinating trip by train from Okehampton to the Exeter Energy from Waste Plant, where they discovered what happens to our rubbish once it leaves our homes. The visit gave pupils a first hand look at how everyday waste can be transformed into electricity, bringing their learning about sustainability and the environment to life. One of the highlights of the day was visiting the control room, where pupils watched the giant grabber machine sorting waste before it was processed. Alongside the tour, the children took part in a range of handson activities exploring waste management and learning more about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling. The trip provided a valuable insight into how small changes can make a big difference to the world around us.
CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS IN THE SUNSHINE Our annual Prep School Cross Country Competition finally took place at the start of May, with the sunshine making a welcome change after the Lent term's rain delays! Pupils from across the Prep School tackled the course with enthusiasm and plenty of energy, giving their very best from start to finish. It was wonderful to see so many children taking part and supporting one another throughout the event. TEN TORS 2026 Months of training, preparation and determination came together in spectacular fashion at this year's Ten Tors Challenge, with Shebbear College pupils taking on one of the South West's most iconic outdoor events once again for 2026. Shebbear was proud to field three teams, the maximum number permitted, with pupils tackling the 35-mile, 45-mile and 55-mile routes across Dartmoor. After arriving at camp and soaking up the atmosphere of the event, teams set off on their respective challenges, ready to put months of preparation into practice. Over the course of the weekend, pupils navigated their way across the moor, overcoming physical and mental challenges while demonstrating resilience, teamwork and determination. There were moments of pure joy, tougher stretches that tested perseverance, and countless examples of the teamwork and Shebbear spirit that carried everyone through. Their hard work was rewarded when all three teams successfully crossed the finish line, completing their challenges and achieving a goal they had been working towards throughout the year. Ten Tors is about much more than the miles walked. It develops confidence, independence, leadership and teamwork, and our pupils represented the College brilliantly throughout the event. A FEAST OF FOOD AND NUTRITION TALENT Our Form 4 GCSE Food & Nutrition students recently put their skills to the test in their mock coursework session, producing an impressive three-course meal in just three hours. Drawing on everything they have learned this year, pupils prepared a range of dishes from scratch, including fresh pasta, bread, pastry and sauces. The challenge required careful planning, organisation and technical skill, with students working hard to complete their dishes within the time limit. The standard of work was exceptional, with pupils creating a selection of beautifully presented and imaginative dishes while gaining valuable experience ahead of their GCSE coursework.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH The whole school joined the nationwide celebrations marking Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday, taking part in a range of activities inspired by one of Britain's most beloved broadcasters and naturalists. Pupils embraced the occasion with an Attenborough-style narration challenge, posed for photographs with a life-size Sir David and, in one memorable moment, formed a giant "100" to honour the milestone.
CHEMISTS TAKE ON NATIONAL CHALLENGE
The Prep School added their own creative touch to the celebrations, producing some wonderful artwork and creating a giant birthday card, which was posted to Sir David as a special birthday greeting. Sir David's passion for the natural world has inspired generations, and our pupils thoroughly enjoyed celebrating this remarkable milestone.
Three of our talented chemists represented Shebbear College in the Royal Society of Chemistry's Analytical Chemistry Challenge, competing against students from schools across the country. Working together as a team, they completed a series of practical tasks including titrations, chromatography and gravimetric analysis, putting their laboratory skills, accuracy and problem-solving abilities to the test. The students tackled every challenge with confidence and enthusiasm, performing excellently throughout the competition and demonstrating the high standard of chemistry at Shebbear. EXCITING PLANS FOR SHEBBEAR'S VOCATIONAL HUB An exciting new chapter in the College's development is on the horizon, with plans underway to create a dedicated Vocational Hub at Shebbear College. From September 2027, Pyke House will be transformed into a centre for vocational education, providing pupils with valuable opportunities to develop practical skills alongside their academic studies. At the heart of the new facility will be a fully operational café, creating a real-world business environment where pupils can gain hands-on experience. Initially, the hub will support the delivery of GCSE Food & Nutrition, as well as Sixth Form Hospitality and Business qualifications, with further opportunities expected to be introduced as vocational education continues to evolve nationally. The new Vocational Hub will complement Shebbear's broad and varied curriculum, offering pupils additional pathways to explore their interests and develop skills for the future. The café will also become a welcoming social space, serving not only the College community but also the village and wider local area. This exciting development reflects Shebbear's commitment to providing a diverse educational experience, combining academic study with practical learning and real-life opportunities.
A ROARSOME DAY OUT! Pre-Prep pupils enjoyed an exciting visit to Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, where their recent learning about dinosaurs and fossils was brought vividly to life. Throughout the day, the children explored the park, discovering a variety of prehistoric creatures and learning more about the fascinating world of dinosaurs. Seeing the giant models up close helped spark their imaginations and deepen their understanding of the topics they have been studying in the classroom. Alongside their dinosaur adventures, pupils also enjoyed meeting some of the park's animals and exploring the beautiful surroundings, making for a memorable day of learning and discovery.

A FESTIVAL OF CRICKET Shebbear College was delighted to welcome pupils from local primary schools, alongside our own Prep 4 and Prep 5 children, for this year's U10 Cricket Festival. The festival provided a fantastic opportunity for young cricketers to develop their skills, with sessions focusing on the fundamentals of batting, bowling and fielding. Throughout the day, pupils threw themselves into the activities with enthusiasm, improving their technique while enjoying plenty of cricket along the way. Leading the sessions were our Sports Leaders from Form 5 and Lower 6, who did a wonderful job coaching, encouraging and supporting the younger players.
HENRY TAKES ON THE 1% CLUB Form 2 pupil Henry enjoyed a memorable experience after appearing on ITV's popular quiz show, The 1% Club: Kids Special in May. After spotting the auditions while on holiday, Henry decided to apply and successfully progressed through the selection process before travelling to Manchester to film the programme. Hosted by Lee Mack, the show challenges contestants with a series of increasingly difficult questions designed to test logic and problem-solving skills. Henry said he was pleased not to be the first contestant eliminated and described taking part as "an amazing experience". As well as enjoying the challenge itself, he also made new friends during filming and gained a fascinating insight into the world of television production. Many of you will also recognise Henry from the Shebbear stage, having appeared in this year's Senior School production of Sister Act and later taking on the role of Mr Wormwood in the Middle School production of Matilda.

SUCCESS AT HICKSTEAD Shebbear College riders enjoyed a hugely successful return to the NSEA National Championships at Hickstead this year, producing some outstanding performances across a range of disciplines. The team's achievements included an Individual National Championship title, three team silver medals, a team bronze in dressage and an impressive haul of 27 rosettes, with every rider returning home with a prize. A particular highlight was Anaya's victory in the Open Individual Eventers Challenge, while the team also secured silver medals in both the Open and 90cm Eventers Challenge competitions. In dressage, the riders achieved an excellent third place in the Open County Championships, with Neve also finishing second on both of her horses in the Winter Dressage Finals. Competing at one of the country's most prestigious equestrian venues, the team of Neve, Isobel, Anaya, Annabelle, Nancy and Zola, together with their horses, demonstrated tremendous skill, commitment and teamwork throughout the championships. The 27 rosettes marked a significant step forward for the equestrian programme and a fitting reward for the hard work and dedication shown by riders and horses alike.

MEET THE SANCTUARY TEAM 2026 - 27 Congratulations to our Sanctuary Team for 202627, who will lead the student body over the coming year. Taking on the role of Heads of School are Jay and Natasha, supported by a fantastic team of Heads of House: Eleanor (Thorne), Will (Ruddle), Sophia (Pollard) and Heidi (Way). These leadership positions recognise pupils who have demonstrated commitment, responsibility and a willingness to contribute to the life of the College. We look forward to seeing the new team embrace the opportunities ahead and make their mark over the coming year. We would also like to thank our outgoing Sanctuary Team for their dedication, leadership and service to the school. Their hard work and enthusiasm have made a lasting contribution to the Shebbear community.
A DAY AT THE ROYAL CORNWALL SHOW Prep 5 and Prep 6 pupils enjoyed a fantastic day at the Royal Cornwall Show, exploring the many attractions and gaining an insight into the region's agricultural and rural industries. The trip included a lively bowling session and a relaxed lunch with stunning sea views.
MAKING A SPLASH AT NORTH DEVON WAKE PARK Lower Sixth enjoyed a fantastic trip to North Devon Wake Park in June, taking a well-earned break from the classroom for an afternoon of fun, laughter and plenty of water-based challenges. Whether they were testing their balance on the inflatables, cheering on friends from the sidelines or taking an unexpected dip in the water, everyone got stuck in and made the most of the experience. With lots of laughs and a few spectacular wipe-outs along the way, the trip was a brilliant opportunity to switch off, spend time together and strengthen friendships as a year group. GOLD DOFE PRACTICE EXPEDITION IN THE BRECON BEACONS Our Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award team took on the challenge of a three-day practice expedition in the Brecon Beacons in June, demonstrating outstanding resilience, determination and teamwork throughout.
LOWER SIXTH BIOLOGISTS EXPLORE BRAUNTON BURROWS Lower Sixth Biology pupils headed to Braunton Burrows in June for their compulsory fieldwork study, spending the day investigating how environmental factors influence the distribution and abundance of species. Working across a range of habitats, pupils collected data and samples while measuring a variety of abiotic factors, including soil and environmental conditions. The fieldwork gave them the opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a real-world setting, developing practical research and data collection skills along the way. It was a hot but highly successful day in the field, with plenty of valuable data collected to support their ongoing work in Biology.

Carrying everything they needed on their backs, the group navigated their way through the Welsh hills, tackling long days of walking, varied terrain and unpredictable conditions. The expedition provided a valuable opportunity to develop navigation, campcraft and problem-solving skills, while also building confidence and independence. Pupils showed great maturity in managing the demands of the journey and worked together exceptionally well throughout the three days.
FINAL WHISTLE FOR FORM 5 With their final GCSE exam behind them, Form 5 marked the end of an important chapter in true Shebbear style with a football match against Form 4. As soon as the exams were finished, pupils swapped pens for football boots and headed onto the pitch for a friendly but competitive game, cheered on by the rest of the year group and plenty of other pupils who gathered to watch. There was a great atmosphere as friends came together to celebrate the end of exam season, with lots of laughter, support and a few impressive footballing moments on display. After months of hard work and revision, it was the perfect way for Form 5 to unwind and enjoy some wellearned freedom before the summer holidays began.

BEFORE SHEB SHAVE FOR MACMILLAN A group of courageous pupils and staff, led by Ms Vetch, took on an inspiring challenge towards the end of term – shaving their heads to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. In an act of solidarity for those affected by cancer, the team of “Sheb Shavers” bravely said goodbye to their hair in front of a supportive school community. The initiative highlighted both the personal impact of cancer and the importance of standing together to make a difference. The event proved to be a huge success, with the group smashing their original fundraising target of £1,000 and raising an incredible £2,065.

The atmosphere on the day was fantastic, as pupils and staff alike cheered on the participants. The newly-shaven volunteers have been proudly sporting their bold new looks, having demonstrated remarkable courage and commitment to the cause. Every donation will go towards supporting Macmillan’s vital work, providing care and guidance to people living with cancer and their families at some of the most difficult times in their lives. “I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone that sponsored us, amazing generosity. Cancer takes a lot from people, and is often out of their control. Shaving our heads was a choice, a way to stand with those that don’t get to choose. MIDDLE SCHOOL PRODUCTION MATILDA JR Our Middle School pupils wowed audiences with this summer’s production of Matilda Jr., delivering a high-energy, heartwarming performance that showcased the impressive talent and enthusiasm of the school’s younger performers. Bringing together pupils from Prep 5 – Form 2, alongside a lively chorus from Prep 3 and 4, the Middle School production has quickly become a much-anticipated part of the school calendar. Following the success of The Lion King Jr. in 2024 and Mary Poppins Jr. last year, expectations were high – and this year’s cast certainly did not disappoint. At the heart of the production were three outstanding Form 1 performers. Performing Arts Scholar Edith shone in the title role, perfectly capturing Matilda’s intelligence and cheeky spirit, complemented by a lovely singing voice. Amelia brought warmth and sincerity to the role of Miss Honey, while fellow Performing Arts Scholar Bella impressed as the fearsome Miss Trunchbull, commanding the stage with confidence and humour. The wider cast added plenty of character and comedy throughout. Henry and Violet were wonderfully entertaining as the larger-than-life Mr and Mrs Wormwood, while Jack delighted the audience as Bruce Bogtrotter – particularly during the unforgettable cake scene! Supported by a committed and energetic ensemble, the entire cast worked together to deliver a polished and thoroughly enjoyable performance.

Musical highlights included favourites such as Miracle, School Song, Naughty and Revolting Children, with the talented chorus adding energy and richness to every number. The production was brought vividly to life through colourful costumes, slick choreography, and the dedication of both cast and crew. A special mention must also go to the senior pupils who supported the production behind the scenes, providing technical and backstage expertise to ensure everything ran smoothly – and of course to the CAPA team Mrs Sadler-Smith, Mrs Parker and Miss Ruhleman, who made it all happen. This joyful production was a true celebration of creativity, teamwork and confidence, and is a wonderful reflection of the strength of performing arts at Shebbear College. SPLASHING INTO SUMMER Prep 6 enjoyed a fantastic leavers' trip to North Devon Wake Park, picking the perfect day to visit right in the middle of the summer heatwave. With the sun shining and temperatures soaring, pupils made the most of the opportunity to cool off while celebrating the end of their Prep School journey. The day was packed with fun on the water, plenty of laughter and a few splashes along the way as everyone threw themselves into the activities.
A FOND FAREWELL FOR UPPER SIXTH As the end of the school year approached, staff, pupils and families gathered for a special Garden Party to celebrate our Upper Sixth leavers and mark the end of their time at Shebbear College. Held in the sunshine, the afternoon provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils and their families to come together and reflect on their years at the College. Guests enjoyed afternoon tea and celebratory drinks, creating a relaxed and happy atmosphere as everyone caught up and shared memories. A highlight of the event was the presentation of yearbooks, along with OSA ties and badges, welcoming pupils into the Old Shebbearians' Association as they prepared for the next stage of their journeys. There was plenty of laughter, a few emotional moments and a real sense of pride as we celebrated all that this year's Upper Sixth cohort has achieved. We wish them every success and happiness for the future.

AN EVENING OF OPEN AIR THEATRE

There can be few better ways to spend a summer evening than watching live theatre outdoors, and this year's Open Air Theatre production certainly didn't disappoint. The audience was treated to Meldrum-atic, a magical adventure set on Exmoor with a wonderfully inventive twist on Lorna Doone. Written by Shebbear's own Mr Pomroy, the play was packed with larger-than-life characters, unexpected turns and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. With the performance taking place beneath the open sky, the setting couldn't have been more fitting. As the evening unfolded, cast members threw themselves into the action, bringing Mr Pomroy's colourful characters to life and keeping the audience thoroughly entertained throughout.
CELEBRATING OUR SCHOLARS
There was a real buzz around the event, with families, friends and members of the wider Shebbear community coming together to enjoy a memorable evening of drama and laughter. From the first scene to the final bow, Meldrum-atic had audiences smiling, proving once again that theatre at Shebbear is always something special.
Scholars from across the College came together at the end of term for a special Formal Scholars' Dinner to celebrate their achievements and contributions throughout the year. It was wonderful to see so many pupils in attendance, enjoying the opportunity to gather with fellow scholars for an evening of good food, conversation and celebration. The event recognised the hard work, commitment and talent shown by pupils across a wide range of disciplines, both inside and outside the classroom. Throughout the evening, there was a real sense of pride in all that had been achieved over the past year. From academic success to sporting excellence, creative achievements and outstanding performances, the dinner was a fitting way to recognise the dedication of our scholars and the positive impact they have on life at Shebbear.

PROM 2026 Form 5 celebrated in style at this year’s Prom, held at the Falcon Hotel in Bude in the beautiful evening sunshine. It was a fantastic evening to mark the end of an important chapter in their school journey. The occasion began with a series of memorable red carpet arrivals, and, as always, they did not disappoint. Alongside elegant gowns and sharp suits, there were some truly creative entrances, including arrivals by tractor, an army tank, an ice cream van and even on horseback! A particular highlight of the evening was the awards, presented by Mr Jenkins, which caused lots of laughter and pride – a fantastic opportunity for them to come together and celebrate friendships built over the years. Staff were delighted to share the evening with students – a fitting and joyful way to recognise the year group’s time at Shebbear.

ACTIVITIES WEEK: PARIS ADVENTURES As part of Activities Week, Form 1 and 2 pupils enjoyed an action-packed trip to Paris, packed with sightseeing, adventure and plenty of memorable moments. After a smooth crossing, the group got their French adventure off to a great start with an evening of crêpe making before heading into the city the following day. First up was the Eiffel Tower, where pupils enjoyed spectacular views across Paris, followed by a boat cruise along the Seine and a walking tour of some of the capital's most famous landmarks, including the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe and Notre-Dame Cathedral. There was hardly time to catch their breath before the evening's activities got underway, with football, swimming and a disco ensuring the fun continued long after the sightseeing had finished. The excitement stepped up another level with a day at Disneyland Paris. Pupils spent the day exploring the parks, enjoying their favourite rides and making the most of the magical atmosphere. Whether racing between rollercoasters, meeting Disney characters or stocking up on souvenirs, there were smiles everywhere you looked.

ACTIVITIES WEEK: BACK AT SCHOOL While Form 1 and 2 were exploring Paris, there was plenty happening elsewhere during Activities Week.
Back at school, pupils enjoyed a varied programme of activities with something for everyone. Trips to the beach and Crealy proved popular, while a murder mystery challenge had pupils putting their detective skills to the test.
Form 3 headed to the stunning North Cornwall coastline to complete their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition. From challenging hikes to learning essential survival skills, pupils showed real determination throughout the experience. Working together to navigate routes, carry equipment and overcome obstacles, they demonstrated excellent teamwork and resilience every step of the way.
There was also plenty of hands-on learning, with chemistry cosmetics workshops giving pupils the chance to create their own products, alongside art and cookery sessions that encouraged creativity and teamwork.

ACTIVITIES WEEK: PREP ADVENTURE AT ROCK & RAPID Prep 4 to 6 enjoyed an action-packed few days away on their Rock & Rapid residential, with adventure, challenge and plenty of smiles from start to finish. Over the course of the trip, pupils threw themselves into a whole range of activities, taking on everything from high ropes and low ropes to climbing, abseiling and bouldering. There were opportunities to test their aim in archery, work together to build rafts and get out on the water in canoes and Mega-SUPs. Whether they were conquering fears high above the ground, mastering new skills or encouraging teammates through a challenge, pupils approached every activity with enthusiasm and determination. The residential provided lots of opportunities to build confidence, develop teamwork and create lasting memories with friends. To round off a fantastic trip, the group spent a day at Crealy Park, enjoying the rides and attractions and making the most of their final day together. A brilliant residential packed with adventure, laughter and unforgettable experiences.

SPORTS DAYS 2026 The sun shone on two fantastic Sports Days this summer, with pupils across both the Prep and Senior Schools giving their all and demonstrating the very best of Shebbear spirit. Prep School Sports Day was full of energy, determination and encouragement, with pupils competing enthusiastically in every event. Whether running, jumping or throwing, everyone gave their best effort and cheered on their teammates throughout the day. It was wonderful to see so many families lining the track and field, creating a fantastic atmosphere and supporting pupils as they competed for House points. After a closely contested day, congratulations went to Thorne House, who were crowned Prep School champions. The competitive spirit continued at Senior Sports Day, where pupils produced some outstanding performances across the programme of events. There were impressive displays of athletic ability throughout the day, with several long-standing records broken as pupils pushed themselves to new heights, including Max in the U13 300m (49.44s) and James in the U15 Discus (29.61m). Competition between the Houses was fierce, but it was Way House who once again claimed the top spot and celebrated victory at the end of a memorable day. Both events were a terrific showcase of talent, teamwork and House spirit, with pupils supporting one another and embracing every challenge, whether they were competing for a medal, a record or valuable House points.

BIG DAY IN One of the most anticipated days of the year did not disappoint as pupils from across the College came together for the annual Big Day In, Shebbear's ultimate end-of-term celebration. Formerly known as House Day, the event brought the whole school together for a day packed with fun, competition and plenty of memorable moments. Proceedings began with the legendary Fun Run, which once again lived up to its reputation.

Pupils tackled a course featuring a slip and slide, bog run, ice bath, colour run and a host of other obstacles designed to leave participants muddy, colourful and more than a little exhausted by the finish line! After refuelling at lunch, attention turned back to House competitions, with a variety of games and challenges keeping the rivalry alive throughout the afternoon. Pupils threw themselves into every activity, earning points for their Houses while enjoying the chance to spend time together outside the classroom. The celebrations continued into the afternoon with a party on the pitch, where great music and a fantastic atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop to the final hours of the school year.

CELEBRATING A YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENT The end of the academic year provided an opportunity for the whole Shebbear community to come together and celebrate the achievements, successes and personal growth of pupils across both the Prep and Senior Schools.
The celebrations continued with Speech Day, where Senior School pupils were recognised for their achievements both inside and outside the classroom. From academic success and sporting accomplishments to creative talents and service to the wider school community, there was much to celebrate. We welcomed Old Shebbearian Chris Blencowe as guest speaker, whose reflections and encouragement provided a fitting conclusion to the year.
Prep School Celebration Day was a wonderful occasion, recognising the hard work, progress and accomplishments of pupils throughout the year. Families, staff and pupils gathered to reflect on another busy and successful year, with awards presented across a range of areas. We were delighted to welcome Old Shebbearian Demelza Short as our guest speaker. Her inspiring message about ambition, individuality and the importance of character resonated with pupils as they looked ahead to the next stages of their journeys.

FOUR YEARS OF NATIONAL RECOGNITION TO GLORY THROUGH THORNS At this year's Speech Day, we were delighted to present our very first 'Glory Through Thorns' Award to Upper Sixth student Robyn. This prestigious new award is based on our school motto 'Ad Gloriam Per Spinas' (To Glory Through Thorns) and recognises pupils who have demonstrated exceptional determination, commitment and achievement across multiple areas of school life. To gain the award, they must complete both core thorns, achieving the DofE Silver Award and three Senior Deputy Head's Commendations, alongside a range of additional academic, leadership and co-curricular achievements. Robyn embodied the spirit of the award through her impressive breadth of achievement. Among her proudest moments were completing the Ten Tors 45-mile Challenge and serving as Head of House. She also achieved a Merit in Grade 8 Piano, performed in numerous school productions and choirs and excelled academically throughout her time at Sheb. A truly deserving recipient and a fantastic example of resilience, commitment and allround excellence. Congratulations, Robyn!

We were once again recognised in the prestigious Independent Schools of the Year Awards at the end of term, receiving a commendation in the Small Independent School of the Year category. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Shebbear has been recognised in the national awards, an achievement that reflects the dedication of staff and pupils alike and the strength of the College community. Organised by Independent School Parent magazine, the awards celebrate excellence across the UK's independent education sector. With this year's competition attracting the highest standard of entries to date, receiving a commendation is a significant accomplishment. The recognition highlights many of the qualities that make Shebbear special, including its personalised approach to learning, exceptional pastoral care and strong sense of community. At the heart of the College is a commitment to ensuring every pupil is known, valued and encouraged to achieve their personal best. PERU: THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME For a group of Shebbear pupils, this summer brought the opportunity to embark on an unforgettable adventure as they travelled to Peru with Camps International, accompanied by Ms Vetch.

After emotional farewells with family and friends, the team arrived in South America ready to embrace a journey filled with challenge, discovery and community service. Following a chance to recover from their travels, they quickly got to work on their first project in the Sacred Valley, helping local communities by clearing land and building irrigation systems to support fruit tree cultivation.

Over the following days, pupils rolled up their sleeves and threw themselves into a variety of tasks, including painting, sanding, fence building and preparing a primary school basketball court for its new playing surface. Their hard work made a real difference while providing valuable insight into life in rural Peru. The expedition was not all work, however. The team also had opportunities to explore the stunning landscape around them, including a hike to a beautiful waterfall. Even a power cut became part of the adventure, leading to a memorable candlelit dinner before an evening around a fire pit in the Sacred Valley, sharing stories and toasting marshmallows beneath the stars. The next stage of the trip took the group to Camp Huaypo, set high in the Andes at 3,700 metres above sea level. Here, pupils immersed themselves in local culture, making traditional bricks, building stadium stands, teaching English and harvesting oca, a traditional Andean root vegetable, which they later enjoyed with fresh cow's cheese. They also explored ancient ruins, visited colourful local markets and experienced everyday life in the local community.
One of the most memorable moments of the expedition came with the challenge of the four-day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. Rising before dawn for the final stage, the group tackled an incredible 2,020 steps in darkness before reaching their destination just as the sun began to rise. Watching the first light illuminate the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu was a breathtaking experience and a moment none of the team will ever forget. Following the trek, pupils had the opportunity to explore Machu Picchu town before continuing to Camp Maras for the final part of their journey. Throughout the expedition, Shebbear pupils fully embraced every opportunity that came their way. Whether helping local communities, experiencing a different culture, tackling physical challenges or stepping outside their comfort zones, they demonstrated resilience, compassion and outstanding teamwork. The trip provided not only incredible memories but also invaluable experiences that will stay with them long after they return home.

FROM DEVON TO CANBERRA Four Shebbear Sixth Formers enjoyed a truly unforgettable experience as they travelled to Australia as part of Shebbear College's longstanding exchange programme with Canberra Grammar School. Natasha, Sophia, Freddie and Jay received a warm welcome from their exchange partners and host families on arrival in Canberra. Before settling into school life, they spent several days experiencing some of the very best of Australian culture and hospitality. Their introduction to life Down Under was certainly a memorable one, featuring dune buggy adventures, a desert barbecue and even the chance to watch Australia take on Italy in rugby.
Having swapped Devon for Canberra, the four students quickly settled into life at Canberra Grammar School and made a positive impression on staff, pupils and host families alike. Embracing every opportunity that came their way, they threw themselves into school life with enthusiasm and confidence. A particular highlight was Freddie receiving his First XV rugby blazer during a school assembly, a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the way Shebbear pupils embrace new challenges. The exchange programme is one of the many opportunities available to Shebbear Sixth Form students, giving them the chance to experience a different culture, develop independence and build friendships on the other side of the world. For Natasha, Sophia, Freddie and Jay, it has been an opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, broaden their horizons and create memories that will last a lifetime. And really, how many students can say they swapped life in Devon for an adventure in Australia and called it school?

WELCOME TO THE OSA SECTION OF THE SHEBBEARIAN! A WORD FROM THE DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI COORDINATOR I can’t believe it has been a year since I wrote my last magazine report! As is quite often the case at Shebbear, this year has flown by in a blur of events, with a healthy sprinkling of OSA presence at many of them. I read a quote from Richard Pyke which said “Shebbear was not built, it grew” and I think the same can be said for the Old Shebbearians’ Association, sometimes front and centre of the action (our incredibly well attended Reunion Dinner) and sometimes quietly in the background (helping to fund pupil places and sports trips). The OSA continues to grow; I am excited to see what we can achieve in the next year.

DEMELZA SHORT MAKES ENGLAND RUGBY DEBUT Huge congratulations to Old Shebbearian Demelza Short, who earned her first senior England cap in April this year, running out in the number 6 shirt against Scotland earlier this month. To pull on an England shirt is the dream, but to do it at just 19 makes it even more special. It’s a phenomenal achievement and a proud moment for Demelza, her family and everyone at Shebbear College. Mrs Lovett saw her play at the England vs Wales Game at Ashton Gate – and managed to have a quick (and slightly emotional) catch up! Breaking into the England squad takes serious talent, grit and determination, and Demelza has clearly shown all three. The step up to international rugby is no small leap, but she rose to the occasion and marked the moment in style with her debut performance. Those who remember Demelza from her time at Shebbear will recognise the same work ethic and competitive spirit that have taken her all the way to the top of the game. She’s a fantastic role model for current pupils, showing exactly what can be achieved with commitment and ambition. We were delighted to welcome Demelza back to Shebbear for our Prep School Speech Day this summer, where she was a true inspiration to our younger pupils!

GOLDEN ACHIEVEMENT AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE Congratulations to Old Shebbearians William (Class of 2023) and Harriet (Class of 2025) Allin, who have both recently been awarded their prestigious Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award certificates at a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The Gold Award is the highest level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, recognising outstanding commitment, resilience and achievement across a range of challenging activities, including volunteering, physical pursuits and expeditions. William and Harriet’s success is a testament to their dedication and perseverance throughout the programme. It was a proud moment for both Old Shebbearians and a lovely touch to spot the Shebbear connection on the day, with William wearing his OSA tie and Harriet her bracelet. A fantastic achievement for them both, and one that truly reflects the spirit of ambition and determination fostered at Shebbear College.

A WORD FROM THE OSA PRESIDENT Kit Hale
I have the privilege of writing the President's Report this year and, firstly, I would like to thank Jamie Sanders for his two-year presidency and for all the amusing speeches delivered at the annual OSA dinners.
During Jamie's presidency, significant efforts were made to promote donations to the Old Shebbearians War Memorial Scholarship Fund. I am delighted to hear that the funds raised have now been allocated to pupils who will begin at the College in September. This year's annual OSA Dinner at the RAF Club was, once again, a great success, with over 100 attendees ranging from recent leavers to Shebbearians marking 70 years since leaving the College. Our guests were Ronell Selzer and Justin Spanswick, both key representatives from ILG. It was encouraging to hear how positively ILG supports the OSA and recognises the important role it plays in maintaining strong links between the school and the Old Shebbearian community.

As part of the OSA committee, I have thoroughly enjoyed re-engaging with our alumni through the various events organised throughout the year. I would like to thank Olly Wicket for his time and effort in making these events happen. The turnout at the 2025 Golf Day at Holsworthy Golf Club was fantastic.
OLD SHEBBEARIANS' ASSOCIATION One of my personal highlights this year was the football match held at the College in January 2026. Two teams met on the school's astroturf, with Richard Tidball refereeing impartially as the OS Over 40s took on the OS Under 40s. It was a thrilling match that ended in an entertaining 4-4 draw. The spectators could not have wished for a more enjoyable way to spend a drizzly winter Sunday afternoon. The highlight of the day, however, was the opportunity to meet Alimamy Sesay (88-89), who took advantage of a business trip to attend the football match and reunion dinner after travelling all the way from Sierra Leone. As the summer months arrived and the end of term approached, the annual cricket match between the OS and the Shebbear First XI was once again upon us. It was a family affair for me, as I had the pleasure of playing alongside my brother and eldest nephew for the OS team, while my youngest nephew, Will, was representing the Shebbear First XI. Will managed to skittle his brother and catch his father, although thankfully for me, his uncle proved a little harder to dismiss. The OS won the match; however, we were playing against a very young side who more than held their own against a competitive and experienced OS team. Alongside the cricket, games of rounders and netball were also played between teams comprising current Shebbearians and Old Shebbearians. Thank you to everyone who attended and for making it such a special day of sport, friendship and reunions. Thanks also go to Paul Nicholls, Nick Law and Shauna Vetch for their help with the school teams and for umpiring and refereeing throughout the day. We are very grateful to the school for providing an excellent lunch. These events have been tremendous fun, and it is great to see the College continuing to encourage pupils to embrace a wide range of opportunities, from school productions to volunteering in Peru. In preparing this report, I spent some time looking through the Shebbear College social media pages and was amazed by the sheer range of activities and experiences available to pupils.
As a Ten Tors finisher, I am always interested to see how the College has fared each year, and I would like to congratulate the three teams that took part this year. Thank you to Amy and Jo for keeping the school's social media channels active and regularly updated, helping Old Shebbearians stay connected with life at Shebbear. At a recent committee meeting, it was exciting to hear Head Charlie Jenkins outline some ambitious plans for the school, which will add another chapter to Shebbear's rich history. Speaking of committee meetings, it is remarkable to see the amount of work that takes place behind the scenes to keep the OSA running smoothly. I would like to thank all members of the committee, especially our Treasurer, Chris Blencowe, who was also guest speaker at Celebration Day. Should anyone wish to attend a committee meeting, either in person or virtually, please contact abernstone@shebbearcollege.co.uk for details of the next meeting. The date for the next OSA Dinner has already been confirmed, and invitations will be sent out soon. I hope to see as many Old Shebbearians there as possible. CLASS OF ’76 RETURNS TO SHEB It was a real pleasure to welcome back members of the Class of 1976 in March as they returned to Shebbear College to celebrate their 50-year reunion. The day was filled with lots of stories and plenty of fond memories, as former pupils reconnected and reminisced about their time at the college. A highlight of the visit was a tour of the campus, giving them the chance to see how Shebbear has evolved over the years, while revisiting some familiar and much-loved spots.

SAM MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN CAMBODIA After leaving Shebbear College last summer, Old Shebbearian Sam Passmore has been spending time volunteering with the New Dream of Cambodian Children Organisation (NDCCO), a charity-run school dedicated to supporting local children. During his time there, Sam helped to support the school’s work, which provides access to education, daily meals and vital care for children in the community. Through his experience, he has seen first-hand the positive impact the organisation has on young lives and the difference it makes to families in the area. Sam’s efforts are a wonderful example of the Shebbear spirit in action, using his time and energy to support others and contribute to a meaningful cause. His work with NDCCO has not only made a difference to those he has helped, but has also been an incredibly rewarding and eye-opening experience.

JACK COTGREAVE NAMED IN ENGLAND RUGBY U20 ELITE SQUAD Huge congratulations to Old Shebbearian and Gloucester rugby player Jack Cotgreave, who was selected for the England Rugby U20 Men’s 2025/26 Elite Player Squad — a fantastic achievement and a proud moment for the Shebbear College community! Jack’s journey from Shebbear pupil to elite athlete is a testament to his courage, determination, and passion for the game. He was recently featured in a Prep School assembly, where he spoke about the importance of following your dreams — a message that clearly resonated with our younger students. Jack’s rugby journey began right here at Shebbear, with some of his earliest skills taught by Mr Willetts, making this milestone all the more special. We’re incredibly proud of Jack and wish him every success as he continues to pursue his dream at the highest level of the sport.

117TH OSA REUNION DINNER A Wonderful Evening of Connection at the 117th OSA Reunion Dinner More than 100 Old Shebbearians – from recent leavers to longstanding alumni – gathered in London last night for the 117th Old Shebbearians’ Association Reunion Dinner, held at the prestigious RAF Club in Mayfair. The event once again showcased the strength, warmth and enduring spirit of the Shebbear community. Guests enjoyed a superb threecourse dinner before speeches from Mr Jenkins, Heads of School Lucia and Albert, and outgoing OSA President Jamie Sanders, who formally handed over the presidency to Kit Hale. The handover marked a significant moment in the association’s history, with both Presidents reflecting on the value of staying connected to Shebbear and supporting its future generations. This year’s dinner also welcomed several special guests, including Chris Deakes (Head of Ruddle House), Ronell Selzer (Chair of Governors), and Justin Spanswick (COO of the Inspired Learning Group), each of whom spoke warmly with alumni about their memories of the school and its ongoing development. The annual OSA Dinner remains one of the most anticipated events in the alumni calendar – an evening filled with shared stories, renewed friendships and a powerful reminder of the lifelong bonds formed at Shebbear College. OLD SHEBBEARIANS’ ASSOCIATION SPORTING ROUND-UP The past year has been an outstanding one for sport within the Old Shebbearians’ Association, with a fantastic programme of events bringing alumni together and celebrating the continued success of former pupils. The annual OSA Golf Day enjoyed its biggest turnout for a number of years on a glorious September day at Holsworthy Golf Club. Played in excellent spirits, the competition was closely contested, with Bob Barnes and Dave Quance sharing top honours. A particular highlight of the year was the inaugural Old Shebbearians football match, which proved to be a memorable occasion. The entertaining fixture ended in a thrilling 4–4 draw, with Jack Warner scoring two spectacular goals. Standout performances came from Neil Giddy and Chris Jenn for the Over-40s, while Harry and Richard Dymond impressed for the Under-40s side. A special mention must go to fellow Old Shebbearian Ali Sesay, who travelled all the way from Africa to take part in the match—a wonderful demonstration of the strength of the OSA community.
OSA Sports Day, held on 4 July, was another tremendous success. It was fantastic to welcome so many familiar faces back to Shebbear and to see alumni, parents, governors, retired staff and current staff enjoying the day together. Alongside the traditional annual cricket fixture, this year’s programme was expanded to include rounders and netball, providing even more opportunities for participation. Jed Foster was the standout performer in the cricket match, while Ru Mills impressed throughout the day with excellent performances in both the netball and rounders matches. All the games were played in a friendly yet competitive spirit, making for another memorable day of sport. P142

Congratulations also go to the Old Shebbearians who successfully retained the Air Ambulance Charity Golf Day trophy at Royal North Devon Golf Club. After the event was won in 2025 by a College team of alumni Dave Allin, Tim Priest, Pete Soutcott and Rob Buse, this year’s victorious team consisted of Alex Betambeau, James Corry, Dave Quance and Olly Wickett. Away from OSA events, it has been particularly pleasing to see Old Shebbearians continuing to excel at the highest levels of sport. Sophie Gillies enjoyed an impressive season with Exeter City before earning a move to Fulham. Jack Cotgreave continues to represent Gloucester Rugby in the Premiership, while Demelza Short played a key role for Bristol Bears and England in their Grand Slam-winning Women’s Six Nations campaign. Congratulations are also due to Clara Nielson on bringing to a close a remarkable rugby career. Having represented Exeter Chiefs and Bristol Bears, Clara achieved the unique distinction of playing international rugby for both England and Ireland—an achievement very few players can claim. Finally, we wish Charlie Nielson the very best as he takes on the extraordinary challenge of running from John O’Groats to Land’s End. Covering more than 1,000 miles in just 31 days through a series of back-to-back ultramarathons, it is an incredible test of endurance and determination. Everyone at the OSA will be cheering him on every step of the way. The enthusiasm and support shown throughout the year has been hugely encouraging, and it is clear there is a real appetite among Old Shebbearians for these events to continue. We hope they will become regular fixtures in the OSA calendar, providing even more opportunities for former pupils to reconnect through sport and celebrate the enduring spirit of the Shebbear community.
