RACISM—COLONIALISM—TRIBALISM—in our SOCIETY, CULTURES, & WORLD COLLECTIVE HIGHLIGHTS gathered from African, European & American Provinces, presented by the SHCJ Leadership Team June 2026

INTRODUCTION to COLLECTIVE HIGHLIGHTS The SHCJ General Chapter of 2022 acknowledged “racism, colonialism, tribalism, etc. in ourselves, our history, our present experiences and cultures …. The Chapter challenges all of us to commit ourselves personally and collectively as provinces and as a Society to continue to be converted as we work for greater justice and equality in our world.” In the Chapter Enactments, the whole Society is called “to understand more deeply and address the issues of racism, colonialism and tribalism etc. in ourselves, our history, our present experiences and cultures.”

x The Society Leadership Team (SLT) and Extended Leadership Team (SELT) arranged a series of workshops between 2024 and 2026 (and another in 2027), and continuing response to this Chapter call has become an ongoing goal of the Society Plan for 2025-2030. Since November 2024, workshops have been offered throughout the Society, including: a workshop on colonialism and tribalism in Europe, a workshop on racism in America, and a series of workshops on tribalism in Africa. All of the workshops have been conducted by Yago Abeledo, a Missionary of Africa from Spain and team member of Faith and Praxis, and Selina Mbuli, a Presentation Sister from Kenya.

x In January 2026, each province was asked to reflect on the experience of its particular workshop. The SLT has reflected on the reflections and we offer here the highlights of the Society’s collective effort to deepen understanding and take action to address the ongoing reality of these “isms” in the life of our international community, our diverse cultures, and our world. The European and American Provinces each met as a province for a single workshop, and each province offered a general reflection on the impact of their meeting. The African Province met in two different groups and invited personal reflections from every participant. Their individual responses are included in this booklet of COLLECTIVE HIGHLIGHTS, June, 2026.
