WORDS OF GRATITUDE
This year, Shawnigan has moved forward with renewed purpose. With Project Future 2.0 guiding our path, Shawnigan has placed financial aid and accessibility where they have always belonged, at the heart of who we are. Each gift to the School strengthens our ability to welcome students whose potential might otherwise go unseen. I am deeply grateful for the generosity that makes this possible and for the shared belief that education can profoundly change lives. Together, we are creating opportunities that will reach far beyond our gates. The momentum we are building today will sustain a legacy of opportunity for generations of students to come.
Jacqueline Flett ’97 (Groves’) Board of Governors, Chair
Reading our 2024-25 Impact Report reminds me of the extraordinary community we have here at Shawnigan Lake School. Thank you for your continued support.
Following extensive consultation and collaboration, we have launched the latest iteration of our strategic plan: Project Future 2.0: The Shawnigan Journey – and your continued support is vital to our delivery of it.
I am always struck by the feedback I receive about the Shawnigan Journey and its impact, from Closing Day on campus to letters we receive at the Head’s Office to conversations across the world with members of the School community. A parent of a current Grade 12 student from Germany wrote to me recently with this message, following a reception we held in Hamburg:
“It is both inspiring and rewarding to connect with members of the Shawnigan community who share such a deep appreciation for the School’s values and vision. The sense of purpose and care you all bring to your roles does not go unnoticed and is deeply appreciated.
“If there is ever a way for us to give something back, we would be happy to do so. Please don’t hesitate to let us know, as we are fully aware of how unique and exceptional the opportunities at Shawnigan truly are.”
Thank you to every one of you who has stepped forward over the past year to help us develop and deliver the unique and exceptional opportunities at Shawnigan for our students.

KINDLES HEARTS
Ensuring Shawnigan continues to thrive for the next generation
The Annual Fund provides the foundation for the operating budget at Shawnigan. Funds raised through this campaign support the School’s strategic direction by building on existing infrastructure and programming, and helping to support scholarships and financial aid that, in turn, ensure a diverse student body. We continue to strive to increase participation in the Annual Fund across the Shawnigan community, reflecting a mutual belief in our shared mission and creating a sense of collective identity, responsibility and progress. When parents, alumni, staff and friends choose to contribute to the Annual Fund, it signifies a shared commitment to the values and future of Shawnigan.
Contributions to our Annual Fund also support the C.A.S.E. (Communications, Arts, Sciences, and Entrepreneurship) program. Through the generosity of The Bradley Family Foundation and our donors to C.A.S.E., we funded an upgrade to the Hugh Wilkinson Theatre’s production booth, creating a more professional environment with space for students to learn to operate lighting, and audio equipment, including mics, sound and music gear.
On Giving Tuesday (December 3, 2024), we emphasized Shawnigan’s Day of Gratitude, encouraging students to write letters of appreciation to staff members. This initiative, highlighted through a social media video, was aimed to educate students on the value of gratitude and the various ways of giving back.

GIVING DAY
Shawnigan's
A celebration of school spirit, generosity, and community engagement
On February 4, 2025, Shawnigan celebrated its firstever Giving Day, a milestone event that exceeded our expectations and set a new standard for our community engagement and philanthropy.
The campaign raised $149,398 (including a matching gift) in 24 hours from 403 donors. More than half of the contributions came from first-time donors, highlighting the event’s success in broadening the School’s donor base.
The heart of the campaign was a spirited competition where every donation earned points for the donor’s boarding house of choice. The contest came down to the wire: at 11:52 p.m., Lonsdale’s, Groves’, and Ripley’s Houses were neck-and-neck. Thanks to a late surge of determined donors, Lonsdale’s House ultimately claimed victory.
Participation rates reflected the strength of the School community, with parents contributing the largest share at 54%, followed by staff (15%), alumni (9%), and past parents (2%). Among alumni, graduates from the 2020s led the way with 21 participants, including 18 alumni making their first-ever gift.
Shawnigan’s inaugural Giving Day not only demonstrated the extraordinary generosity of its global community but also showcased the enduring power of inter-House spirit and digital engagement in advancing annual giving. Beyond the numbers, the event provided a significant boost to the School’s featured funds, ensuring additional resources for the students of today and tomorrow. Our next Giving Day is planned for February 3, 2026.

FORGES FUTURES
Creating a legacy for generations to come
The Shawnigan Oak Society represents a new chapter in legacy giving at Shawnigan, inspired and named after the grand tree that stands on a hilltop alongside Lake’s and Ripley’s Houses, and which arrived as an acorn from England’s legendary Sherwood Forest, planted in the 1930’s by School founder C.W. Lonsdale.
While a legacy society has existed for some time, this marks the first full expression of its identity. Rooted in the enduring symbolism of the Founder's Oak, the Society now carries a name and presence that reflect its purpose: to recognize those who, like Lonsdale, choose to plant with tomorrow in mind.
This is not a society of donors, but of caretakers: alumni, parents, staff, and friends who have nurtured the roots of something they believe in. Their commitments are quiet, personal, and deeply meaningful. As we launch the Shawnigan Oak Society, we do so with a renewed sense of intention: growing a community that believes in the School, its mission, and the idea that a Shawnigan education should continue to thrive for generations still to come.
“ The support I received during my time at Shawnigan made a lasting impact on my life. Contributing to the Legacy Fund is my way of giving back and helping ensure that future students have the same opportunities to grow and develop.
The lessons learned at Shawnigan extend far beyond the classroom, shaping individuals who go on to contribute to their communities and beyond. I believe in supporting the traditions and values that make this school special, and I hope my contribution helps sustain its mission for generations to come.”
– Alasdair Ritchie '10 (Copeman’s)

BUILDS FOR THE FUTURE
Investing in our campus for generations to come
We were overjoyed to formally open the Schieldrop Amphitheatre in the Kaye Gardens with a community ceremony on June 19, 2025. The entire student body was in attendance for the festivities, and several of them performed on the unique stage on Kaye’s Pond. David Schieldrop ’82 (Groves’), an alumnus and long-serving member of the Board of Governors whose generosity made this beautiful new addition to the campus possible, was on hand to cut the ribbon with his family.
Work on the amphitheatre, which included remediation of the pond and gardens as well as construction of the amphitheatre, started in early 2025. Graduation ceremonies were held at the amphitheatre on June 26, and it was also the setting for the first outdoor all-school Gathering at the beginning of the 2025-26 school year. This beautiful space builds on the original vision of the Kaye family, whose generosity in the late 1980s provided the first amphitheatre in the front gardens.
Also in June 2025, Shawnigan celebrated the opening of the Hori Brothers English Language Centre inside the Jim & Kathryn Shaw Library in the heart of campus. The new facility was donated by Yoshito and Mizue Hori from Japan, who saw their five sons study at Shawnigan.
The Horis' vision is to provide a central space for the entire School community to foster inclusivity, to share cultures, and to inspire our students to be global leaders.
“Shawnigan Lake School is as special to me today as it was 43 years ago when I graduated. My experience was so impactful and it opened my eyes to the world. The connections and relationships forged here and since have hugely influenced my life. What stands out is that it is a place of community. The Schieldrop Amphitheatre is a manifestation of community, providing an opportunity to gather together.”
– David Schieldrop ’82 (Groves’)

CREATES THE BEST FOR ALL
Transforming tomorrow’s leaders today
Scholarship and financial aid programs allow Shawnigan to open its doors to students from diverse and far-reaching backgrounds who might not otherwise have access to the high-quality independent education that the School provides. The generosity of donors ensures that Shawnigan can provide its unique educational opportunities to deserving students from Canada and abroad.
Recent examples of the exceptional and varied recipients include Hannah Frank ’25 and Maria Mohammadi ’27. Hannah, of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, was given the chance to attend Shawnigan through the Diamond Foundation First Nations Scholarship. Her family expressed their gratitude to Shawnigan last June by donating a totem pole entitled "The Chief and His Daughter" carved specially for the School that now stands at the front gates. Maria is a current Impact Scholar, supported by Vancouver-based NGO Women Leaders of Tomorrow and a group of donors, whose family fled Afghanistan for Turkey in 2016 in response to direct threats from the Taliban, and who dreams of returning to the country of her birth to make a difference.
Recent additions to Shawnigan’s scholarship program include the Thane Rogers Scholarship, established through the generosity of a legacy gift from Thane Rogers ’35 (Groves’), and the Peace Arch Scholarship, which commemorates the monument on the border between Canada and the US in Surrey, BC and Blaine, Washington, and was made possible by donors who wish to foster Shawnigan’s values among promising American youth.

Equipping our Students to Thrive
Launched in 2021-22 as part of Project Future, and named in honour of Simon Bruce-Lockhart, Shawnigan headmaster from 1990-2000, and his wife Joanne, a teacher from 1990-2007, the Bruce-Lockhart Fellowship for Academic Excellence continues to attract and bring in outstanding educators from outside the School for one year, with the mission of inspiring the community, providing fresh perspectives on education, encouraging innovative and interdisciplinary approaches, exposing students to highlevel academic pursuits, and uniquely contributing to their experience of the Shawnigan Journey.
Mark Henry, the Bruce-Lockhart fellow for 2024-25, focused on the incorporation of the Harkness learning method at Shawnigan as a way to balance and adapt to the rise of artificial intelligence. The Harkness method is a discussion-based teaching format that encourages critical thinking, empathy, and collaboration.
Another named position continuing to bring valuable insight and vision to Shawnigan is the Heimbecker Inspiration Chair for Experiential Education. Established in 2021 and funded by a family with deep connections to the School – James Heimbecker ’21 and his mother, Lisa, a member of the Board of Governors – the Heimbecker Chair is a one-year position that supports and develops experiential education at the School. Dr. Alexei du Bois (South Africa) filled the role in 2024-25, helping students discover their untapped potential and learn through hands-on experience beyond the classroom walls, while also helping to define the Shawnigan Journey. Dr. du Bois was succeeded in the position by Emily Coolidge (Canada) for the 2025-26 school year.
“It has been a particular joy to see the fellowship directly benefit our students. Desi Shaw ’25 used part of the funding to design and build the first purposemade Harkness table for Shawnigan. In a rapidly changing world, where the role of education is continually being re-evaluated, Harkness offers young people the chance to refine their debating, social, analytical, and critical thinking skills in a face-to-face, screen-free setting. I believe this approach has the potential not only to shape our classrooms but also to influence the wider direction of pedagogy at Shawnigan.” – Mark Henry, Bruce-Lockhart Fellow

THE SHAWNIGAN COMMUNITY
Engaging alumni, parents and friends
More than 1,700 alumni, parents, and friends stayed connected with the School by attending over 30 events hosted by the Advancement & Community Engagement team. Community events included the New Parent Dinner, Carol Service and Major Awards hosted in conjunction with the Shawnigan Parents Association, as well as alumni-focused events such as the Alumni Golf Classic, Founder’s Day, and community gatherings around the world, in locations as broad as Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Portland, Tokyo, Taipei, and Shanghai. Founder’s Day in October 2024 saw the largest turnout of alumni and family members, former staff, and board members since 2019.
Engagement with alumni beyond events was a key priority. This included a renewed focus on the mentorship program connecting alumni with current students, and growing our social media networks to promote events, school news and alumni successes.
In January, the School released an update to the Shawnigan Journey, now including alumni as part of the post-Shawnigan stage of the journey. The theme of “Thrive” directly ties into our mission to inspire lifelong engagement with the Shawnigan community.
We have started preparations for Shawnigan’s 110th Anniversary in 2026. Celebrations will take place throughout the year and around the world, and will include a special Chapel Service to mark the birth of the School on April 27, 2026, and a special Founder’s Day, as well as special merchandise and a coffee table book collecting the 110 Objects that have been featured on our website since early 2024.
