Village one step closer to senior living development SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WOODRIDGE – A 93-unit independent senior living development now will move forward after developers secured $1.4 million in tax credits. The low-income housing tax credits will allow the Woodridge Horizon Senior Living Community, to be located at 8099 Janes Ave. in Woodridge,

to generate equity to finance about half of the cost of the development, according to a news release from the village of Woodridge. The proposed four-story brick masonry building would include 93 affordable units – a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments for adults ages 62 and older and common area amenities, such as a community room, fitness
center, game room, library and computer lab, according to a release. “This project addresses a village board goal and community priority to provide Woodridge residents with senior housing opportunities,” Woodridge Mayor Gina Cunningham said. In 2008, the village entered into a development agreement with a local apartment com-
plex owner to buy existing buildings and land for a future senior housing facility. The village board then requested proposals from developers and in 2012 chose the Alden Foundation to develop the senior housing project. Alden still needs to obtain final planned unit development approval for the development. Following village approval,

DANGERS OF ACIDIC FOOD Q: Are some foods more detrimental to tooth health than others? A: Yes. Dental enamel, the thin, outer layer of hard tissue that protects the tooth and maintains its shape, is subject to erosion and decay. Acidic foods and drinks are among the substances that can adversely affect the enamel. The prolonged exposure to acid that can come from sipping or holding acidic drinks in the mouth before swallowing is not good for the enamel. Most commercial soft drinks contain acids, which can break down the tooth surface. These acids also damage tooth enamel over time by dissolving the mineral structure of teeth, thinning the enamel. Eventually, because of repeated exposure to acid, the tooth’s enamel will lose its shape and color. As the damage progresses, the underlying dentin–the tissue that makes up the core of the tooth–becomes exposed, causing the teeth to look yellow. To prevent tooth erosion, wait at least 20 minutes after consuming an acidic food or beverage before brushing the teeth, so as not to damage the weakened enamel. Dentists say you should eat acidic foods all at the same time, instead of snacking on them throughout the day. Eat these foods only during meal times to minimize the amount of time the acid is on your teeth.
WOODRIDGE – A proposed single-family home subdivision received final approval June 26 from the Woodridge Village Board. The board unanimously approved a series of agreements and ordinances allowing the former Ide Tree Farm property north of 83rd Street and just east of Woodward Avenue to be converted into a 149-lot upscale subdivision called Timber’s Edge. Pulte Homes Corporation will develop the property. Lot sizes will average about 9,200 square feet with five home models ranging from 2,292 to 3,307 square feet in the subdivision, with an average projected home price of $400,000 to $500,000, according

Park District to deliver fall guide this month
Parking lot expansion project complete
WOODRIDGE – Construction of more parking spaces at the Orchard Hill Park/Cypress Cove Water Park site has been completed, according to the Woodridge Park District. The parking lot expansion project was completed in mid-June and added 105 additional spaces for Cypress Cove Family Aquatic Park patrons. Expansion of a new maintenance storage facility at the site is ongoing. The 4,900-square-foot maintenance storage building will serve as an additional space for maintenance equipment and will be just south of the existing maintenance facility. Construction will tentatively be completed this summer. Both projects are part of the district’s capital development fund.

WOODRIDGE – The Woodridge Village Board will meet for a special workshop July 24 to discuss public facilities and the Town Centre, according to a news release from the village of Woodridge. Village spokesman Jack Knight said the meeting is an opportunity for the village board to review the Town Centre redevelopment plan, including community input and consultant recommendations. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Werch Board Room at Village Hall, Five Plaza Drive.

Woodridge’s Wiseman elected as First VP of Union Club board SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WOODRIDGE – Brooke M. Wiseman of Woodridge has been elected First Vice President of the Union League Club of Chicago, a 135-yearold nonpartisan civic, cultural and philanthropic organization. Wiseman is the national CEO of Blessings in a Backpack, a nonprofit organization recognized by People as its Charity of the Year in 2012 for its work of feeding 66,000 hungry children in 44 states on weekends by sending home a backpack full of food. The Union League Club’s members are men and women who take an active role in a broad range of public, civic, cultural and philanthropic affairs impacting the Chicago metropolitan area, Illinois and surrounding states and
the nation. Earlier in her career, Wiseman was the Chief Development and Marketing Officer of the Brooke M. YWCA of Metro- Wiseman politan Chicago and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Chicago for 16 years. Wiseman served six years as the national president of the Association of Girl Scout Executive staff and chaired the Girl Scouts’ National Certified CEO Commission. She was named one of the “100 Women Making a Difference” by Today’s Chicago Woman in 2000 and the following year received the Human Relations award from the Chicago Commission on Human Relations. Wiseman has served on
the board of directors for Leadership of Greater Chicago Fellows Association, Chicago State University Foundation and the Junior League of Chicago Community Advisory Board. NEWS BRIEFS 2 DuPage County Dems are removed from ballot
The DuPage County Election Commission has removed two Democratic nominees from the November ballot because they each failed to secure enough valid signatures to run, according to the commission. Brian Wolter, who was slated to run for president of the forest preserve district, and Max J. Havlick, who was going to run for the DuPage County Board District 2 seat, both have been removed. As a result, the Republicans nominated for those positions will run unopposed. Joe Cantore of Oak Brook is running for forest preserve president, and Pete DiCianni of Elmhurst is running for the District 2 board seat. District 2 covers all or portions of Woodridge, Addison, Clarendon Hills, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, Villa Park and Westmont.

The decisions mean that both Joe Cantore, who will run for forest preserve president, and Pete Dicianni, who is vying District 2, will now be unopposed. And the commission may not be done. The DuPage County Republicans have also challenged the nominations of Peickert, Roland “Rolly” Waller of Bensenville and Regina Drucilla Brent of Aurora. The challenges hinge on the notion that there was not proper noti-
fication from the Democratic Party to precinct committeemen before the nominations. Should those candidates be thrown out as well, two-term chairman Dan Cronin and board members Paul Fichtner of District 1 and Tonia Khouri of District 5 would also run unopposed come November. The board is scheduled to hear more on the remaining objections July 10, according to the Election Commission website. Darlene Ruscitti, chairman
of the DuPage County Republicans, was unavailable for comment and Election Commission Executive Director Bob Saar could not be reached for comment before press time. Peickert said he remained hopeful not only for the outcome of the decision, but also the party’s electoral hopes. “I think once the electoral board rules, which we’re hopeful will be in our favor, we will stack up fairly well in the November election,” Peickert said.

DOWNERS GROVE – The tricks used by unscrupulous hunters are varied and creative. There’s the guys who plug an MP3 player loaded with duck calls into a 100-watt speaker, and there are sportsmen who bait the fields with rows of wheat or corn to attract water fowl. The hairiest situations can occur at night, Downers Grove native and Conservation Police Officer Steve Vasicek said, when hunters shoot deer, lit with a spotlight, from the back of a pickup truck. “It’s call spotlighting,” he said. “They always have loaded firearms in the truck, and a lot of times there is alcohol
involved. That gets a little more dicey sometimes when it’s 3 [a.m.] in the morning and there are three possibly intoxicated subjects with guns.” As a conservation officer, Vasicek has the full powers of a traditional police officer to arrest, detain and investigate, plus the added responsibilities to enforce the hunting rules, similar to positions other states call game wardens. “I truly care about the resource,” he said. “When somebody shoots a trophy-class deer at night, they’re stealing from everyone.” He also is one of the best at his job in the entire country. Despite not holding primary elections in the DuPage County districts 1, 2 and 5 forest preserve president and the county board chairman seat, the Democratic Party of DuPage County nominated several political hopefuls to collect signatures to appear on the ballot in late April and early May. All had to collect a minimum number of signatures to enter the election. On Friday, the commission decided two of the party
entrants – Brian Wolter and Max J. Havlick – were ineligible because they did not collect enough valid signatures, said Bob Peickert, party chairman and county board chairman hopeful. “I give them both a lot of credit,” Peickert said. “They came in late, they didn’t decide to put their name in for nomination until late in the process. … It’s unfortunate, and we made it a good effort, but we knew it would be difficult.” No candidates presented themselves during the party’s recruitment process for the primary elections in March, Peickert said in a previous interview.

The tragedy of a failed government program There is a deeply troubling human story that should not get lost behind the headlines and investigations of the controversial and largely failed, anti-violence initiative Gov. Quinn launched shortly before the 2010 election. For the most part, attention has been rightly focused on charges of sloppy management and mounting evidence of money steered to the politically connected in the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative. So far the program has prompted a highly critical state audit, criminal investigations and, most recently, a rare decision by the legislature’s auditing body to issue COMMUNITY subpoenas to key players. VOICE But, we should step back Christine and remember the rationale Radogno for this program. During a deadly summer of violence in Chicago, the governor unveiled the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative to offer opportunities and alternatives to young people trapped in some of the city’s most violent neighborhoods. There is much that could have been done to throw a lifeline to youth in desperate need of job skills and experience. But instead, they got cash to attend yoga classes, go on museum field trips, walk in parades with Quinn and hand out fliers promoting inner peace. Condescending and trivial activities that offered no lasting benefits. In recent days, we have learned that money meant to help young offenders return to society as productive and law-abiding citizens went instead to a sham organization that apparently helped not one single youth with the money it received. Last spring, we learned that two gang members had been paid by the program and that one was later implicated in the death of the other. This occurred, despite warnings from a community activist who demanded to know why the program had hired “thugs and criminals to do positive outreach in my community.” Let’s not forget that when the program was launched, the governor promised it would “take on the root causes of violence” by creating “about 3,000 part-time and permanent jobs for young people so they have a positive way to go.” It is wrong to waste taxpayer dollars in any area of government. But, in neighborhoods where the needs are so great, resources so limited and the dangers so deadly, those in charge have a special responsibility to watch every cent they spend. Regardless of where these investigations may ultimately lead, this much is clear: This was a program that exploited and utterly failed the very people it was supposed to help. That is inexcusable.

A pair of residential developments are inching closer to reality here in Woodridge as the Timber’s Edge subdivision and a senior housing development progressed this past week. This is great news locally, as a dismal economy has mostly shut out residential growth across the Chicago area. While both developments have some more hurdles to clear, they are on their way. Congratulations to Advocate Health Care and Good Samaritan Hospital staff for formally announcing a $78 million addition to its Downers Grove building, which serves Woodridge residents. The three-floor addition features 96 private rooms that will be built above the existing critical care pavilion on the north end of the hospital campus on Highland Avenue. Upon completion in late 2016 or early 2017, all of Good Sam’s existing semiprivate rooms will be converted into private rooms, resulting in an all private-room campus.

DOWNERS GROVE – Midwestern University is in the early planning stages for a new school of optometry on the Downers Grove campus. Downers Grove village staff presented council members with initial planning documents July 1 for the four-story building, which would house the new school. Midwestern University spokeswoman Jill Blair-Smith said the university has not yet obtained state approval for the program and its implementation could be more than two years away. The university declined to share more details about the program. Buildings more than 50 feet tall not already in the university’s 2012 plan of development filed with the village must be approved by the village council. The council heard the amendment to the plan of development July 1 and now

Thomas Henry Fields of Downers Grove, Illinois, passed away June 28, 2014, at the age of 83 after living with prostate cancer for 21 years. Tom was born in Kearny, NJ, on October 23, 1930, to Rueben and Anna May Fields. He studied physics at CarnegieMellon University, where he received his BS in 1951, and his PhD in 1955. He became a professor at Northwestern University in 1961, before being appointed as the director of the high energy physics division at Argonne National Laboratory in 1965. An expert in particle detection methods, he led the Advanced Photon Source project at Argonne in 1986-87, and the NuMI/MINOS neutrino oscillation project at Fermilab from 1998-1999. This work, and sabbaticals in Birmingham (UK) and at CERN in Geneva, left him with friends and colleagues around the globe. A devoted husband and father, Tom is survived by his wife of 20
by years, Helene Block Fields; his daughter Caroline (Kevin) Flanigan of Columbus, OH; his son Gregory (Sasha) Fields of Downers Grove; and Elizabeth (Keith) Robinson of York, ME. He was a loving husband to his late wives Karin (Rasch) and Mary (King), loving father to his late son Timothy, and loving grandfather to his grandchildren. The service will be private. Adventist breaks ground on new cancer institute SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA HINSDALE – Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital foundations hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Adventist Cancer Institute and Outpatient Center on June 17. The event took place at the construction site of the new cancer center on Ogden Avenue and Salt Creek Lane in Hinsdale and brought together key stakeholders to celebrate the start of construction. More than 175 guests including foundation donors, civic and hospital leaders and members of the local communities gathered to mark the occasion, according to a news release. Scheduled for completion in 2015, the center will house oncology services from both Adventist Hinsdale and Ad-

TRAINING EXERCISE WILL TEST READINESS
LONG RANGE PLANNING SESSION
On Friday, July 11, 2014, the Downers Grove Police and Fire Departments, Midwestern University and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital will be conducting a training exercise involving an active shooter in a school scenario. The purpose of the exercise is to test the emergency preparedness of the participating agencies, determine effectiveness and see where improvements or adjustments are needed.
Please note the next long range planning session of the Village Council, originally scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2014, has been rescheduled and will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014.

"Our goal is to prepare first responders, school personnel, and emergency medical providers using as much realism as possible," stated Downers Grove Police Chief Robert Porter. "The safety and security of our faculty, staff and students is of utmost importance to Midwestern University. Midwestern is proud to participate in this educational training," said Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer. Those passing by Midwestern University in the early morning hours on July 11 may notice public safety vehicles arriving; however, all event activity will take place on campus which will be closed to the public.

However, there are safety rules that must be adhered to: • Cannot emit offensive smoke or odors • Must be attended to by a person 18 years of age or older • Must be at least 15 feet from any structure or dense brush • Must be conducted in an approved container • Cannot burn cardboard, leaves, construction materials, or refuse If you believe that someone is acting irresponsibly and is in violation of the open burning ordinance, contact the Downers Grove Police Department at (630) 434-5600 for enforcement. It is up to the responding officer to determine if the fire meets the requirements of this ordinance. Should you have questions about open burning, contact the Fire Prevention Division at (630) 434-5983. The open burning ordinance can be found on the Village website www.downers.us. Kama Indian Bistro forges fusion fare in La Grange LA GRANGE – While my years in the Chicago area have opened me up to a wide range of ethnic cuisines, the joy of a quality Indian restaurant lights my fire in a very special way – and not just because of the occasional burning-hot spiciness. The combination of exotic flavors, the spicy sauces, and the fact that everything is eaten with a bed of delicious carbs – all make it hard to beat. Sometimes, the spices can be a little heavy-handed, overwhelming the main components of the dish – the veggies or meat – and everything else. While that’s not always a bad thing, it can make for a one-note taste. Not so with La Grange’s Kama Indian Bistro. A romantically lit, upscale offering by Vikram and Agnes Singh, it balances depth and accessibility of flavor with all the traditional notes even the most casual of Indian food fans will appreciate. As with any good Indian meal, my date and I started out with an order of samosas, a type of turnover. The first thing we assessed was the fried dough on the outside – perfectly done and crispy without a hint of grease. We noticed that it didn’t smack us in the face with a ton of spiciness, allowing us to better enjoy the vegetables inside, including the small peas that provided a change of texture, instead of simply a tinge of color. Then came the main dishes, all of which hit a similar balance, and offered a distinct example of the restaurant’s deftness at letting multiple tastes shine. The chicken tikka masala was very good, probably the favorite dish of the night. Often, sauces can get weighed down with too much yogurt or cream, flattening a lot of the flavor. Kama’s dish featured protein that was fairly moist with just a hint of char to add a smokey touch, and a surprisingly light sauce that had

Nick Burdi had a stellar junior season for Louisville’s baseball team. The Downers Grove South graduate appeared in 32 games and led the Cardinals with 18 saves and a 0.49 ERA. He struck out 65 batters in 37 innings while walking just 10 batters as the Cardinals advanced to the College World Series. In June, Burdi was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the second round of the MLB Draft. He was taken 46th overall. He signed June 24 and was assigned to the minors. Burdi also was named the Stopper of the Year by the National College Baseball Writers Association, an award given to the best relief pitcher in college baseball.

Tess Johnson saw action in three outdoor track meets as a sophomore at Illinois. Competing in the javelin, the Downers Grove North graduate finished second at two meets, including at the Billy Hayes Invite with a throw of 123 feet, 3 inches. She also competed in the Big Ten Championships.
Trezzo takes field for U of I
Danielle Trezzo appeared in 38 games as a sophomore for Illinois’ softball team this spring. The Downers Grove South graduate primarily was used as a pinch runner, scoring nine runs and tallying three stolen bases.

Tenerelli takes home Augie award
Downers Grove North graduate and Southern Illinois University freshman Connor Kopach saw extensive playing time for the baseball team this spring. He appeared in 49 games, making 39 starts. He battled .222 with 17 runs scored and nine stolen bases.
Nick Tenerelli, a Downers Grove South grad and Augustana junior, was named the Outstanding Defensive Player for the Vikings’ baseball team. The catcher made just two errors in 266 chances this spring, good for a .993 fielding percentage. He also hit .356 with 31 RBIs.

baseball and softball. “We’re very excited about this,” said Teresa Walker, secretary at Walker Sports. “Sean is very excited about it, and I think he picked the right place for it. I’d like to keep it an annual thing because I think it’s a nice thing for the community.” Having players and teams of that pedigree is exactly what Harrington had in mind when he envisioned the camps. “Guys are available only a few weekends of the summer, so it was really the only time to do it,” Harrington said. “Wisconsin was interested in it, so I think it worked out well, and we have a Final Four team with lots of returning players
doing it.” Kaminsky will be joined by eight of his Wisconsin teammates at the camp Sunday. Eight University of Illinois players, including Rayvonte Rice and Tracy Abrams, the Illini’s top two scorers last season, will be the instructors at a camp on Saturday. The camps are for boys entering grades 3 through 12 and offer players the perfect opportunity to get a taste of what college basketball is like. “The camps are going to have drills and activities those guys do at school,” Harrington said. “Campers are going to get a chance to see how the players work out, and the players are going to break down drills and teach the campers.” The camp will be beneficial not only for the participants, but for the teachers, too. Harrington worked with the NCAA and is able to pay the players for their time at the camp. “I had to go through a lot of things with NCAA compliance to make sure it’s legal,” Harrington said, “but I can pay them to do what they love, which is play basketball and teach basketball.”

The team saw several athletes finish strong and had high honors in team competitions. LISLE – For basketball players hoping to improve their skills over the summer, trips to far-flung college campuses are the norm. The Players Camp is flipping the script. Players from the University Sean of Illinois and Harrington the University of Wisconsin, including Lisle native and UW standout Frank Kaminsky, will bring the college talent to the kids at a pair of camps Saturday and Sunday at Walker Athletics in Lisle. “I’ve always been around basketball and I attended a lot of camps as a kid,” said Sean Harrington, the former Elgin High School and U of I standout who started The Players Camp. “Being from the suburbs, the schools were hours away and you’d have to pack for three or four days. “I thought, how cool would it be if the kids in college would come to our area? How cool would it be to bring elite players to the suburbs and have kids go out and compete and learn from those guys?” Kaminsky played high school ball at Benet Academy and had a standout 2013-14 season for Wisconsin as the Badgers made the Final Four in the NCAA tournament. Kaminsky set a Wisconsin single-game record with 43 points against North Dakota in November, led the Badgers by averaging 13.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, was twice named Big Ten Player of the Week, was Big Ten all-conference first team and was the Most Outstanding Player in the west region of the NCAA tournament.
