HOW DOES A TOOTH DECAY? Q: What gets a cavity started? A: What starts a cavity is the repetition of a process that occurs in your mouth when sugars from the food and drink you consume interact with bacteria that live in the plaque on your teeth. That interaction produces acid, which begins a process called demineralization, the loss of calcium and phosphate from the tooth’s enamel. It usually starts in a spot not readily noticeable, like in a fissure. Eventually, over months and months, the affected patch of enamel collapses, leaving a hole, or cavity. Left untreated, the cavity will spread into the dentin, the softer, more sensitive part of the tooth under the enamel. If the excruciating pain hasn’t driven you to the dentist first, decay will eventually destroy the tooth. One of the keys to preventing decay is the removal of plaque. Plaque is the filmy substance that’s on the teeth. The more it is allowed to build up, the greater the danger of decay. Brushing and flossing is so important because they are the most effective ways of eliminating plaque. Keeping sugar out of your diet is another key. Talk with your dentist about ways to cut down your risk of tooth decay.

The Bolingbrook Police Pension Board began a hearing Friday to see if Peterson terminated his pension rights by committing a felony related to his job. Peterson, who served as a Bolingbrook officer from 1977 to 2007, did not attend the hearing. He was convicted in 2012 of murdering Kathleen Savio. Savio was found dead in a bathtub in March 2004. Her drowning was initially ruled accidental, but the case was re-opened when Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy, disappeared in October 2007. Charles Atwell, a lawyer who specializes in pension funds, said it doesn’t matter whether Peterson was on duty when Savio’s life ended, but whether he used his access and training in crime scene investigation and interrogation techniques to set up “the whole scheme.” Peterson’s attorney, Steven Greenberg, noted his client was not convicted of or charged with obstructing justice or concealing a homicide. “There’s nothing specialized about

Did you know that M-Day was on April 21? That was the day Google decided to wake businesses up to the mobile revolution. Mobile has been growing for years, but the pace is picking up. In 2013, searches done on mobile devices outnumbered searches done on desktop computers. Businesses should have taken notice then (if not before) and made their websites easily viewable on phones and tablets. But, many businesses missed the memo or ignored it. The memo is coming out loud and clear now from a source that should be paid attention to….Google. Google’s “memo” was published on February 26, 2015. It included on April 21, 2015 Google will be implementing algorithm changes that will cause websites that are mobile optimized to be displayed higher in search results. Google’s announcement states, “Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal…Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices. “In lay terms this means that if a business wants it’s website to come up early to people searching on a phone, their website needs to be easy to read on a

phone. This means that a person should not have to zoom in or pinch and pull the screen to read the content. To see if a website is mobile friendly, use a mobile site tester online. There are two ways to have a mobile optimized website. The first is a “bandaid” solution. It is having a separate mobile companion site. It is usually an abbreviated version of the desktop site. It typically has the most commonly viewed information, such as address, hours, and click to call function. The better long term solution is having a responsive design. A responsive website is a site that adjusts the content to be viewable on any size screen. The advantage is having all of the content on a website available to people viewing it on a mobile device. Unless a business wants to see a decline in traffic (and more importantly potential customers) to their website, it is critical to have a mobile friendly website. If Google penalizes a website for not being mobile optimized, it will definitely result in less visits because more than half of searches are taking place on a mobile device and over 90% of people searching do not go past the first page of search results.

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com The College of DuPage has been served its third federal subpoena this month, with authorities seeking recordings of the school on the day administrators received the first two. The subpoena requests video and audio recordings from 2:30 to 11:59 p.m. April 13 of the interior and exterior of the college’s Student Resource Center, which houses the office of President Robert Breuder, according to school spokesman Randall Samborn. “The College of DuPage is fully cooperating with any federal investigation,” Samborn said. On April 13, the college was served two federal subpoenas, following a similar investigation by the DuPage Coun-

Of the two, one revolved around financial records for senior staff and trustees, communications and contracts involving college foundation members as far back as Jan. 1, 2009, and focused on the spending habits of Breuder, trustees and senior management. It also delved into accusations that members of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors inappropriately received preferential treatment for contracts for work at the school. The second subpoena sought information about the college’s Suburban Law Enforcement Academy, including class records, instructor certificates, transcripts and communication between several top academy officials.

The third was served April 16, according to Samborn. In addition to requests for the April 13 recordings, it also asks video and audio of the resource center between April 13 and 16 be preserved. College of DuPage Board of Trustees Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who has been a vocal opponent of the Breuder administration, previously indicated school officials may have destroyed papers or transactions. On April 7, she sent Breuder and Chairwoman Erin Birt a legal hold notice demanding the school introduce a mandatory retention policy for college and foundation documents. When asked about the intent of the April 16 subpoena or whether its issuance could be related to the destruction of records, she issued a statement on

the matter. “If he’s done what is suggested here, violating the hold letter I issued is the least of his problems,” she said of Breuder in the statement. Birt did not respond to requests for comment. In recent months, the school has come under fire after the board awarded Breuder a $763,000 buyout. The Faculty Senate has passed a resolution calling for Breuder to be placed on administrative leave until the ongoing investigations are resolved. Trustees are scheduled to meet Thursday, when new board members Deanne Mazzochi, Frank Napolitano and Charles Bernstein, who won the April election running as the Hamilton-backed Clean Slate, will be sworn in.

Health pros dish out advice during B Fit B Active Expo By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com WHEATON – Getting fit can be a daunting task for many, whether you have been active before or not. The B Fit B Active Expo, hosted by the Kane County Chronicle and Suburban Life Media, featured a panel of health and fitness experts from around the area discussing ways to help jumpstart and sustain a healthy lifestyle. The five professionals covered ways to take care of your body, how to set attainable fitness goals and how to turn a passion for exercise and nutrition into a successful business during the event April 22 at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. CrossFit trainer and nutritional enthusiast Britt Crow said fitness, no matter the sport or exercise of choice, was about choosing long-term habits, not short-term goals. “It’s finding a fitness routine that’s going to give you something you can do for life,” Crow said. Crow joined Ron Anderson, who started several fitness and medical centers; world-class Ironman competitor and nutritional expert Ryan Giuliano; injury prevention expert and triathlon competitor Dr. Kevan Ketterling; and fitness entrepreneur Chris Leathers on the panel. Anderson stressed to those looking to make a change in their fitness habits need to drop the monthly binge on green detox drinks and make it permanent. “If you have a goal in mind, whether personally, professionally, whatever it is – you have to make a conscious decision that that’s what you want,” Anderson said. “After that, you have to learn what it is going to take today for me to do so that tomorrow I can be one step closer to that goal.” Properly setting goals was important for reaching them, Giuliano said. When he started his Ironman training in college, he couldn’t even swim the length of a pool, he said. But by creating specific, measurable, realistic and timely goals, he was able to become nationally competitive in the sport. He encourages the same process for all those going through the highs and lows on their individual journeys. Ketterling said throughout the training experience, it’s important not only to have proper cross-training and form but to listen to your body when it tells you to take a break. Leathers said he encourages people of all ages to start and chase what they want in business and in fitness. “It’s never too late to start,” he said. “And don’t let the fear of failure stop you from achieving your goals.”

When the former Benet Academy and University of Wisconsin star was honored by having his number retired at the school in Lisle, he talked about how having a positive attitude was one of the keys to his success. That sounds like a great lesson for everyone. Is it any surprise at this point that there’s more bad news coming out of the College of DuPage? Now the U.S. Attorney’s Office has issued three subpoenas for documents, video and audio. A subpoena is far from proof of an actual malfeasance, but if there has been any going on, we hope this will shed some light.

To the reader opposed to full-day kindergarten – you are right, kindergarten is not free baby-sitting. It is an extended learning opportunity, a socialization tool and an ability to build bonds outside the household. More than 90 percent of Illinois elementary schools have full-day kindergarten. This isn’t about baby-sitting, it’s about rethinking a system to be in line with today’s expectations on education. So before you cast judgment on dual income families (because that’s what you’re doing, under the guise of a debate about full-day kindergarten), take a look at the bigger picture beyond Downers Grove. There is a whole world out there and I for one would like my children to learn about it – taught by trained educators, not baby sitters.

I wish that the DuPage law enforcement agencies would stop arresting people for marijuana possession, especially when the people they are arresting are older than 21 years old. It’s frustrating to see it in the newspaper and online that people are being arrested for this drug that is not harming anyone and is now legal in four states in the country. I’m sure the law enforcement agencies in DuPage could use their resources to fight real crime in this county.

Rain barrels are large containers that capture rainwater at the end of a downspout and store the water for later use, for example in watering plants or washing cars. Using water from rain barrels lowers water bills, helps reduce flooding, and can have a dramatic impact on water quality in our rivers and streams.

FREE WOODCHIPS The Village has free woodchips available at a fenced pickup site located on the north side of Curtiss Street at the intersection of Katrine Street. The site is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., seven days a week. Residents are welcome to take the amounts they need using their own transport. Delivery is not available. Mulch, such as woodchips, can be applied any time of year. The size of the area to be mulched should be as large as practical with the mulch not more than 4 inches deep and not up against the tree trunk when mulching around trees.

Stormwater Utility Incentive As part of the stormwater utility, the Village has an incentive program to encourage residents to install rain barrels on their property. Chicago, Illinois â€“ National Womenâ€™s Soccer League (NWSL) side Chicago Red Stars drew 2-2 in a spirited affair with mighty Portland Thorns FC on Saturday night. Reigning NWSL Player of the Week Christen Press had her second straight twogoal performance to open the 2015 season, but Thorns FC clawed its way back into the game and earned a point courtesy of goals from Christine Sinclair and Mana Shim before halftime. In the early stages of the clash with Portland, Chicago continued right where it had left off in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Seattle the previous week. A mere four minutes into the match, Press took down an excellent long ball by captain Lori Chalupny and cut to her right, followed by a beautiful curler that left outstretched German international goalkeeper Nadine Angerer without a chance. U.S. Womenâ€™s National Team star Press was at it again just four minutes later, receiving the ball from midďŹ elder Vanessa DiBernardo and exploding past her marker on the left side of the penalty area. The 26-year-old ďŹ red at goal from a tight angle and was delighted to see her attempt deďŹ‚ect off defender Courtney Niemiec and underneath Angerer for the dayâ€™s second strike. Portland nearly pulled one back moments later, as Tobin Heath worked her way to the by-line on the right and sent a dangerous cross toward the far past, only to see Red Stars netminder Karina LeBlanc produce a stunning kick-save to deny the unmarked Shim. The rebound fell straight Thorns FC debutant Taylor Comeau, whose effort ricocheted off a defender before being headed off the line by well-positioned Chicago defender Julie Johnston. She’s a senior and she’s been in this situation before. She went out there and led by example and it was nice to see the offense pick her up late in the game.” Emma Varsbergs began the bottom of the fifth with a single and advanced to third when shortstop Jaclyn Pasakarnis roped a one-out double. A Newstrom sacrifice fly then drove in Varsbergs for the goahead run. After retiring the side in order in the top of the sixth, Ramsden came out to close the game in the seventh. Although the leadoff batter reached on a single, Ramsden recorded the next three outs in succession to wrap up the win. “Credit the Glenbard West pitcher and defense, they really limited us on offense today,” Landschoot said. “But Megan was up to the challenge. It was a quality win for both her and the team. “This was an important victory because it was our first conference win and it gets us off on the right foot before a hectic part of the schedule.” The Trojans faced Benet Academy on Tuesday and continue West Suburban Silver play against Hinsdale Central at 4:30 today. The girls face Glenbard East tomorrow and have the weekend off before three straight games against conference opponents begins with a Monday matchup at Proviso West.

DOWNERS GROVE – Megan Ramsden gave the Trojans a much-needed boost Monday as the team notched its first West Suburban Silver win of the season. The senior pitcher was lights out against Glenbard West, going the distance and striking out seven batters during a 2-1 Downers Grove North victory. Ramsden’s performance not only got the Trojans in the conference win column, she also helped the team earn a victory as they embark on of the busiest stretches of the schedule. “This is our first of five games in eight days, so it feels good to get that first win,” Ramsden said. “The defense was sensational tonight; it’s a huge confidence boost when you know that your teammates can rob a hit when the ball is put in play. “On my end, I just wanted to come out and set a good tone and pace. They were able to get to me early for a run, but then I settled down and felt really confident from the pitching circle.” The Hilltoppers got on the board first in the top of the second, manufacturing one run on back-to-back singles after a runner reached on a dropped third strike. But the Trojans countered in the bottom half of the inning when Kayelee Newstrom led off with single then swiped second base. Raemon Meents followed suit with a single, advancing Newstrom to third. Newstrom then scored on a double steal in which both runners were ruled safe. Ramsden was electric from the pitching circle in the following three innings, retiring eight of the nine batters she faced and keeping the game tied at one when the Trojans came up to bat in the bottom of the fifth.

Undefeated Mustangs firing on all cylinders By ALEX SOULIER

asoulier@shawmedia.com DARIEN – The pitching has been nearly perfect this season for the Downers Grove South softball team. Behind two of the most dominant hurlers in the area, junior lefty Caroline Hedgcock and sophomore righthander Payton Buresch, the Mustangs are off to a 16-0 start, including a 4-0 record in West Suburban Gold play. “I think we are playing with a lot of confidence this season, but we are trying not to get ahead of ourselves and approach every game with the same intensity and preparation,” Buresch said. “We are playing really well as a team right now, our offense, defense and pitching is all clicking.” The cohesion has led to a handful of dominant performances in the first half of the softball season. The Mustangs have shut out their last four opponents, most recently defeating Hinsdale South 11-0 on Friday. Additionally, the offense has put up 10 or more runs in 11 games this spring, eclipsing the 20-run mark twice and adding one 19-run game for good measure. “We [the pitching staff] are only as good as our defense and offense is,” Hedgcock said. “There’s a tremendous amount of veteran leadership on this team, with Kristin Lea, Kristen Bialek, Rebekah Ondracek, Megan LoBianco, Zahrya McFarland and Nicole Bowman. They’ve been really solid this year in the field and given us a lot of run support.” Hedgcock, a Maryland University

Mustangs girls soccer split games at Naperville Invitational By MATT LE CREN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com NAPERVILLE – Downers Grove South’s girls soccer team was unable to earn a berth in the quarterfinals of the Naperville Invitational, although it wasn’t for lack of trying. After beating Palatine 3-1 on Thursday in the opening game of what is considered the toughest regular-season tournament in Illinois, the Mustangs fell 2-0 against host Naperville Central on Friday night at Memorial Stadium. Naperville Central then beat Palatine on Saturday to win the group, dropping Downers Grove South to the consolation bracket. “We definitely came out flat,” Downers Grove South coach Chris Hernandez said. “Whether it’s fatigue or mental issues, this was a flat performance for us, which is too bad.” The loss came despite a terrific performance from senior goalkeeper

Meghan Diddia, who was outstanding and made 13 saves while the Mustangs (7-4-1) were outshot 21-5. Neither Naperville Central goal could be blamed on Diddia. On the first one, she made a diving save on an open shot by Kayla Burke, only to see Kirsten Dorgan score on the rebound with 13:58 left in the first half. The Redhawks (9-4-1) made it 2-0 at the 31:20 mark of the second half when Meredith Tunney headed home a corner kick from Taylor Stenmark. They could have easily had five or six more goals if not for Diddia. “She’s really been stepping up these last few weeks,” Hernandez said. “We challenge her at practice to improve herself to be a more of a well-rounded goalkeeper and we’re starting to see the effects of that. She’s been outstanding.” Diddia got the win against Palatine, which controlled the majority of the play against the Mustangs. Ava Porli-
