Where have all the veterans gone?

COMMUNITY VOICES

Jim Wise

Well, August is here, and summer is fading. School has already started in some Sauk Valley communities for the 2025-26 school year.

Please watch out for the kids who will be walking, running and riding their bikes to school in the next few days. They will be everywhere.

Now that we’ve handled the public service announcement, I want to ask everyone to be on the lookout for another group of people: the veterans of the Sauk Valley.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that more than 3,500 veterans live in Whiteside County and another 1,880 reside in Lee County. These veterans appear at parades, holidays that honor military service, and special events such as dinners and reunions. However, they tend to disappear soon after these events end, only to be seen again when the next special event occurs.

There are fraternal organizations in the Sauk Valley where veterans gather to share stories and celebrate camaraderie that are open year-round, which veterans, and in some cases the public, can visit and patronize as often as they’d like.

However, these fraternal organizations may not be around much longer unless more is done to help keep them open.

The American Legion posts in Sterling and Rock Falls, along with the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Rock Falls, are struggling to grow their memberships. Despite all veterans in the Sauk Valley being eligible to join these groups, they have not, and recruitment has remained slow and stagnant for several years now.

Conversations with post commanders of these American Legion and VFW posts reveal concerns about the future of these groups. These posts have

existed for 50, 70 and 100 years in Sterling, Rock Falls and Dixon, but without a strong, active membership to back them, their days are numbered.

The Sauk Valley has an American Legion, a VFW or both in towns from Rochelle to Morrison and beyond, and veterans do live in these communities. The question, however, is, “Where have all the veterans gone?”

Before you say, “They are passing away every day,” that’s true. But as we say thanks for a job well done and say goodbye to the “Greatest Generation,” others have earned their stripes since the end of World War II.

Censusreporter.com provides a breakdown of veterans in Whiteside and Lee counties. We know our World War II veterans are decreasing in number. However, veterans from the Korean and Vietnam wars are the two largest groups of veterans in the Sauk Valley, followed by those who served in Desert Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, which are close behind.

Veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars currently compose most of these groups’ memberships. However, their numbers are beginning to decrease. This leaves veterans younger than 60 –those who served in Desert Storm up to Inherent Resolve – as the next generation of veterans who are needed to join these organizations.

There are veterans in this group who are active in these organizations, but there’s not enough of them to make a real difference.

If the almost 1,800 veterans in Whiteside and Lee counties who served in Desert Storm and the Global War on Terror campaigns joined their local veterans’ organizations, it would greatly benefit their communities by actively supporting fellow veterans and helping to prevent the closure of their community American Legion or VFW post. Veterans are a unique group. They have experienced sacrifice, loss and victory, creating an unbreakable bond among themselves.

Lt. Dan, played by Gary Sinise in the movie “Forrest Gump,” says, “While

we can never do enough to show gratitude to our nation’s defenders, we can always do a little more.”

Those who can do a little more for our nation’s defenders are the veterans themselves. Sometimes, a former soldier needs someone to talk to, a fighter pilot needs to tell their story, a naval midshipman needs a friend to confide in, or a Marine who suffers from Gulf War syndrome needs medical care. All need the help that only their fellow veteran can provide.

The American Legion and VFW posts in our communities provide military funeral honors for veterans. They have Honor Guard units that participate in local parades, perform ceremonies that honor veterans and maintain veterans’ memorials in our communities.

There also are other veteran support programs available through these organizations, as well as programs that promote patriotism and service through scholarships for college-bound students.

Unfortunately, this will all disappear one day if the next “Greatest Generation” of veterans doesn’t answer the call to duty.

A veteran is a community leader who has overcome challenges and hardship. The challenge today is to keep the American Legion and VFW posts in our Sauk Valley communities open and actively supporting their fellow veterans, their communities and our future leaders.

To join these organizations, talk with a friend who is a member or contact the post and speak with the membership director. Becoming a member of these organizations is just a conversation or a phone call away. It’s that easy.

The communities of the Sauk Valley are relying on the next “Greatest Generation” of veterans to accept this challenge and face it with the honor and courage that only a veteran can summon in this time of need.

Businesses adapt as downtown construction enters final stretch

Fourth Street in downtown Fulton is in the middle of a transformation that is reshaping both the street’s infrastructure and the way local businesses operate.

A major overhaul that began in July is expected to wrap up by Nov. 1, about a month later than planned after the project was extended by 1 block. Work now runs from 10th Avenue to 13th Avenue and includes replacing water service lines with copper, installing new electrical systems and streetlights, replacing curbs and gutters, and pouring new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks.

“All the water services have been upgraded. They just finished that up yesterday,” City Administrator Eric Sikkema said, adding that crews soon will start forming the new sidewalks and work half a block at a time, with each section reopening a few days later.

City officials also are weighing whether Fourth Street should remain a two-way street or revert to a one-way configuration, a change that would add 16 parking spaces, improve intersection visibility and make it easier for drivers

to back out of angled spots. Video models of both traffic patterns were presented in March.

“As it’s planned right now, Fourth Street will go to a one-way heading north, but that can always change,” Sikkema said.

Funding for the $1.8 million project includes a $107,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant for sidewalks and lighting, about $550,000 from federal American Rescue Plan Act funds and the remainder from city reserves. Planning began in 2021 after failed attempts to secure other grants.

“The road itself is only 2 inches of asphalt, and then it’s brick underneath. … that brick had started to fail, and that was starting to cause a lot of potholes through our downtown,” Sikkema said. “None of our downtown met any ADA compliance. … Our street lighting was starting to fail. Seemed like every other bulb was starting to have issues, and it was time.”

The construction, combined with the Iowa Department of Transportation’s ongoing resurfacing of the North Bridge just a few blocks south, has posed challenges for downtown businesses.

Lori Shear, owner of Country Orchids, said street work has slowed

I’ve

Jackie Wilkin, owner of Rooted Boutique and a member of the Fulton City Council

walk-in customers, although most of her business comes through phone orders.

Jackie Wilkin, owner of Rooted Boutique and a member of the Fulton City Council, said the upgrades are overdue.

“I’ve owned this business for five years … and in my five years, I’ve seen three people fall on the streets and sidewalks because they’re in such bad shape. So it is a necessary evil,” Wilkin said. “There’s never going to be a good time to do this work, but I commend our city for investing the $2 million to $3 million that it’s going to take to do it and make it better.”

However, Krumpets, a bakery and cafe on Fourth Street, told customers in a Facebook post that the overlapping

bridge and street work has cut their daily revenue nearly in half. To adapt, the business is temporarily focusing on best-selling menu items, shortening hours and shifting mostly to take-out service while using the slowdown to renovate its dining area.

“Even with all of your loving support, the unfortunate circumstance of both of these projects coinciding has left us with a 45% drop in daily revenue. That’s unsustainable in our current format,” according to the post.

A second phase of the Fourth Street work is planned for spring 2026, pending the outcome of a $3.1 million Illinois Department of Transportation Local Roads grant application. That phase would include downtown water main upgrades, repainting the city’s water tower and rebuilding the road from Ninth Avenue to 13th Avenue.

Work on the North Bridge, which carries motorists traveling Iowa 136 into Fulton, was expected to finish in early October. It has been delayed by material shortages and is now slated for completion in November.

“We’re just excited that we can finally move forward on this project and start making some necessary upgrades around town,” Sikkema said.

19 in single-vehicle crash near Lyndon

An Erie woman was killed Aug. 19 when her vehicle left the road and collided with a tree in rural Lyndon.

Marley Yetterberg, 27, suffered fatal injuries in the single-vehicle crash on Moline Road west of Yorktown Road, according to a Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Sheriff’s deputies were sent to that location about 5 p.m. after Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office telecommunicators received a 911 call reporting the crash, according to the release.

Deputies determined that a black 2018 Nissan Sentra driven by Yetterberg was traveling west on Moline Road when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle left the road to the south. The car entered the south ditch and struck a tree.

An investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.

The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office and the county coroner’s office were assisted at the scene by Illinois State

Police, the Prophetstown Fire Department and EMS and Slim & Hank’s.

Yetterberg is the second Erie resident killed in a fatal crash in less than a week.

Frankie S. George, 72, was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash that happened about 3 p.m. Friday on Moline Road near Hillside Road in Erie Township, according to a Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office news release. A preliminary investigation indicates that George’s vehicle was traveling west, crossed into the eastbound lane, then entered the opposite ditch, according to the release.

George’s passenger, Mary K. George, 71, of Erie, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. She was taken by emergency medical services personnel for treatment. The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Erie Police Department, Erie EMS, Erie Fire Department, MedForce 1, the Whiteside County Dispatch Center, the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Unit, the Whiteside County Coroner’s Office and the Fulton Police Department. That crash also remains under investigation.

Sterling man accused of robbing Morrison bank to undergo mental fitness evaluation

A Whiteside County judge ruled that a Sterling man accused of robbing a Morrison bank in July will undergo a mental fitness evaluation as requested by his attorney.

Whiteside County Associate Judge Magen Mertes made the ruling during Ryan D. Hick’s court appearance Aug. 18 when he was slated to have two preliminary hearings – one for a case accusing him of robbing a Morrison bank and another charging him with possessing methamphetamine.

The request for a fitness evaluation was made by Hicks’ attorney, Janet Buttron, and will be completed by psychologist Jayne Braden. Mertes did not grant

Buttron’s request to have Braden evaluate Hicks to determine Hicks’ mental state at the time of the alleged offense. That motion was continued.

Hicks, 37, is charged with one count each of robbery and theft by threat in connection with the July 5 robbery of Community State Bank, 220 E. Main St., Morrison.

Hicks is accused of producing a note at the bank about 11 a.m. July 5, demanding money and threatening to kill the teller if she did not provide it, Whiteside County Assistant State’s Attorney Ryan Simon said during Hicks’ July 7 court appearance. Simon said Hicks left with $2,000 before police arrived.

Simon said the note linked Hicks to the robbery, telling the court that the demand for cash was written on the back of a restaurant receipt that bore Hicks’ signature on the front. An abandoned cellphone also was found at the same restaurant where the receipt came from. A waitress reported to police that she had found the cellphone, which Simon said belonged to

Hicks. Hicks’ image also was captured on bank surveillance video, Simon said.

Hicks was found later July 5 in Sterling with a lot of cash, a bike, computer equipment including a new laptop, multiple cellphones and liquor that he had just bought at the Sterling Walmart, Simon said during the July 7 court appearance.

Hicks denied being in Morrison, but police said they think he had been staying at a house in Morrison on July 4 and had been kicked out. Hicks told police he had been drinking moonshine overnight, was still drunk and wanted an attorney.

The methamphetamine charge in the other case accuses Hicks of possessing 1.6 grams of meth when Rock Falls police arrested him on a Lee County contempt warrant June 16 at the Walmart in Rock Falls.

Buttron on Monday asked Mertes to allow Hicks to be released from the Whiteside County Jail on pretrial release conditions. Mertes denied that request.

Hicks’ next court appearance is set for 1 p.m. Sept. 17.

Cannabis bakery owner, supporters ask City Council to work fairly with business

Employees of Fulton’s Gold Leaf Bakery and Dispensary gathered at the Fulton City Council meeting Aug. 11, to protest the council’s earlier decision to ban products with Delta-9, a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants, and the closure of Gold Leaf because of it.

Gold Leaf opened its doors in downtown Fulton in November 2023.

Jaysen Dyal, owner of the bakery, addressed the council Monday night through a prepared statement: “I opened this business with a vision, a commitment. I was inspired by Chicago, where these were professionally run bakeries, and I thought, ‘Why can’t Fulton have something like that?’ I traveled, met with other business owners, and met with Illinois lawmakers. We provide clear labeling, lab testing of our products, and ensuring the age limits are met. We built Gold Leaf to be professional from the start.

“We’ve had visitors from across multiple states come to Fulton to visit us. How often does Fourth Street get that kind of attention? Our employees got to create, experiment and bring joy to people through their craft.

“We are here with groups of supporters from the public. They are proof that what we have built is worth protecting.”

Dyal said the business is “not asking for a free pass” but is asking for the chance to fairly operate in careful compliance with the city.

Tori Arbach, general manager of Gold Leaf, shared personal accounts of customers’ experiences with the bakery

and their life-changing stories of how Gold Leaf has helped them in their daily life. Arbach explained the chemical properties of Gold Leaf’s goods and how the council’s ordinance applies to them.

Brad Balk, former owner of Eagle River Liquor, came out in support of Gold Leaf and to protest the ordinance’s ban of Delta-9 and its greater impact on the sale of drinks in Fulton. Balk, who currently works as a sales consultant with Romano Beverage, spoke about the economic activity brought to Fulton because of the business and the effect of the ordinance on that.

Council members questioned Dyal, who attended the meeting by phone, and Arbach about the products the bakery sells, how the bakery tests its products for consistent potency control and how it works to ensure its customers are educated on responsible use.

The council took no action.

Barack and Tami Wierenga also attended the meeting to present a business plan for their property at 2001 Ninth St., where they hope to operate a bar. The plan proposes to refurbish space to accommodate an average-sized bar, pool tables, dart boards and an area for gaming.

They are requesting a Class A liquor license to operate the bar, although the council revealed that the city has no Class A licenses available at the moment. The council plans to bring the issue to a vote at the next council meeting.

The council approved the payment to Willett Hofmann & Associates and McCarthy Improvement Co. for the Fourth Street sidewalk and street light replacement from 12th to 20th avenues. The total invoice came to $202,758.

In Committee of the Whole discussion, the council continued its debate on a new marketing plan proposal, with the conversation set to continue at a later date.

We are here with groups of supporters from the public. They are proof that what we have built is worth protecting.”

One-bowl meals are quick, flexible

BEYOND TRIM

One-bowl meals are trendy right now. The concept is simple – just pile several ingredients that meet a certain flavor profile into a bowl and enjoy.

Often called Buddha bowls (which likely comes from the concept of balance in Buddhism and the resemblance of the bowl to the round belly of Buddha) or grain bowls, I’ve seen versions that are inspired by all types of cuisine including Asian, Mexican, Greek, barbecue, etc.

Bowl meals make a great option for meal prep. You can cook your protein and grains in advance, chop your vegetables, create a sauce (optional), and store everything in the refrigerator until needed. I also think they’re a great option for families because they are so flexible. Each family member can add what they like to the bowl and leave out what they don’t.

Here’s an easy burrito bowl recipe that features one of my favorite plant-based

protein sources in the form of lentils. Lentils are high in protein, fiber, iron and B vitamins. They do not require pre-soaking and cook in just 15 to 20 minutes. They contain little fat, no cholesterol and are very inexpensive.

Easy Burrito Bowls

1 tablespoon olive oil

½ cup red or green bell pepper, chopped

½ cup sweet onion, chopped ½ cup thick and chunky salsa (choose your heat preference)

½ cup jasmine rice, rinsed (or substitute quinoa)

½ cup brown lentils

1 tablespoon taco seasoning (or to taste)

3 cups vegetable broth

Directions: In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onions and red peppers. Rinse lentils and rice and add to the pan along with the salsa and taco seasoning. Pour in vegetable broth and bring mixture to a light boil. Cover the pan and reduce heat to low. Cook for an additional

Banking

15-20 minutes, or until the rice is completely cooked. Serve over lettuce and add your favorite toppings.

Suggested toppings include sour cream, shredded cheese, shredded red cabbage, chopped tomatoes, guacamole or sliced avocados, green onions, jalapenos, additional salsa or hot sauce, sliced black olives.

You might ask why these bowl recipes are not just called salads. The difference is that the greens are optional but I like them for this recipe, and my lettuce choice for this particular bowl would be romaine.

Talking Points

• Easy stovetop meal

• Family can make it the way they like it

• Lentils are a high nutrient-dense food!

• They are a good source fiber, iron, protein and B vitamins.

• They don’t require soaking so they cook faster than dried beans.

A wind turbine electricity project has been proposed to a group of Garden Plain Township farmers. Farmers within a four-section area around the Garden Plain substation on Frog Pond Road south of the Garden Plain slab have been meeting with a representative of a Pennsylvania Wind Energy developer. The project, if approved, would be developed in the next five years.

The next major step in the annex-

ation process for the Albany school will be Sept. 14. In a special meeting at the Morrison Junior High School, the board of trustees of the Whiteside County Regional Office of Education will review the signatures collected on the petition calling for the annexation. If the petition is deemed valid, the trustees will schedule a public hearing before ruling on the issue.

to include the ARC staff; some places they go, nothing is given to them to eat or drink.

Those Methodists who assisted throughout the day and bought, prepared, and served delicious sandwiches and yummy cookies, muffins, sweet breads, and bars were Carole Patton, Jean Tichler, Pat Bramm and Pat Popkin.

The usual volunteers who helped out escorting donors from the loungers to the canteen table were Pam Jones and Rick Barr; thank you for being faithful and dependable escorts.

Our certified ARC volunteers who man the registration desk and make the re-sign appointments for the next blood drive were, and almost always are, Irma Russell and Pat Pendgraft. I appreciate you two ladies and your dutiful devotion.

The ARC goal for the day was 62, but they asked me to try to achieve 70. Unfortunately, there was a lot of sickness (sore throats, sinus infections, fevers, coughs) plaguing the area, so we had 13 cancellations and five no-shows (almost 20% of the scheduled appointments that day). I am glad when people who are ill do not come in, because the ARC would defer them anyway; when you are ill, stay home.

There ended up being 50 generous people giving of their time and blood products that came through our doors.

Out of those 50, 39 folks (78%) used the Rapid Pass to streamline the time that the history questions take. Fif-

We had seven donate double red cells/Power Reds, totaling 12 units. They were Tom Demay, Jack Jones, Larry Oudekerk, Larry Sonberg, Mel Johnson, Ron Shank and Jill Vegter; thank you all for being “twice as nice”, like the ARC sticker says!

Forty four whole blood donors came in to help save up to three lives. They were Nancy Bartels (donating in honor of Russ Ottens), Penny Milnes, Pam Shank, Duane Imel, Lyle Bush, Deb Adolph, Bryan Vogel, Lory Oudekerk, Julie Damhoff (donating in memory of Jason Damhoff), Cathy Downs, Toni Decker, Randy Kuehl, Renee Vanderlaan, Joan Vander Bleek, Joyce Hamstra, Vaughn Maxfield, Stephanie Vavra (donating in memory of Frank Vavra), Dale Beswick, Carolyn Aiken, Erin Poirier, Jenna Landheer, Ray Hagar, Beth Wroble, Nancy Shank, Lisa Boles, Sheila Sonberg, Pam Jones, Ken Gooley, Gerald Schultz, Troy Peppers, Kari Forster, Brad Bielema, Julie Brown, Ken Stewart, Timothy West, Kelly Smith, Dave Temple, Connie Swanson Despain and five others (three men and two women) who did not want their names published.

In order to attempt to offset the shortage of blood, this month the ARC offered gift cards to O-positive and O-negative donors who came in to give blood. The whole blood O donors received a $20 gift card to a merchant of their choice, and the double red cells O donors received a $25 gift card to the merchant of their choice. We had 21 donors who have O blood type (42% of our donors that day) who were gifted these cards. The ARC

A “first-time” donor came in to give blood donation a try; Kathy Murray came in with her friend, Nancy Bartels. Thank you, Kathy, for joining the ranks and becoming a regular blood donor!

Six donors reached gallon pin milestones; they were Lisa Boles attained a one-gallon pin, Sheila Sonberg gained a 2-gallon pin, Bryan Vogel collected a 3-gallon pin, Jill Vegter acquired a 4-gallon pin, Nancy Shank obtained a 9-gallon pin, and Beth Wroble who scored a 10-gallon pin! These six people together gave 39 gallons and have saved over 484 lives!

The next blood drive will be Thursday, Sept. 11, at St. Mary’s Church on Garden Plain Road, with Wa-Tan-Ye sponsoring the canteen.

During that blood drive, I will give out gift cards to those established donors who bring in someone with them who has never donated. If the new donor gives a unit, and signs up for the November blood drive, the established donor will receive a gift card from me. If the new donors give blood at the Nov. 13 blood drive, and sign up for the January blood drive, then donate at the January drive, they will receive a gift card. All to incentivize donors to come in with new donors and get them established as regular donors!

Also, at the September blood drive, to celebrate 75 years of Peanuts comic strip, the ARC will be giving out Peanuts T-shirts to all donors who give blood that day!

way back on March 20. We thought that it belonged to an ARC staff person, but nobody working that day claimed it. If you can identify it, I will get it to you. Feel free to contact me through Facebook Messenger, or text or call me on my cellphone at 815-718-5117.

Please know that I have no control over what date the blood drives land on; the ARC chooses when they come to Morrison. With one every eight weeks, that is 48 weeks, which leaves four weeks of “play” to move the drive around to a later date.

I coordinate six blood drives throughout the 52-week calendar year; one every eight to 10 weeks. Some drives are eight weeks apart, and some drives are 10 weeks apart. If you always give at my drives, you will have to skip one drive a year, because of how the calendar falls.

For example, if your birthday is a Tuesday this year, next year it will land on a Wednesday; that is just the nature of the beast. Leap Day every four years throws another wrench into it. Then your birthday will be on a Thursday. If you do not want to skip a month, there are several other blood drives in the area, within a few days of mine.

Just go onto the Blood Donor app, or on the website, www.redcross.org to find one near you.

I very much appreciate all those who donate, volunteer, sponsor canteens, provide cookies and groceries, and give me words of encouragement and physical and emotional support. I’ve been doing this for 16 years, and hope to do it for 16 more, God willing!

Have a safe rest of the summer. I’ll see you all in the fall!
