Sauk Valley Community College’s Impact Program has announced that the Mustang Impact Challenge has received a $5,000 gift from Farmers National Bank.
Lori Cortez, vice president of advancement at Sauk Valley Community College, said the donation was facilitated by multiple discussions with the bank.
“The bank is a wonderful supporter of Morrison schools and organizations,” Cortez said. “This latest donation means the Mustang Impact Challenge is now closer to reaching its goal of fully endowing Morrison schools!”
This gift supports the ongoing efforts to fully endow Morrison schools and their students in the Impact Program. The mayor, city administrator, and council members provided strong leadership by supporting Morrison students as they pursue future educational opportunities. Donations toward the Mustang Challenge are still being accepted.
“I’m happy the bank chose to support this program,” said Doug Vanderlaan, Farmers National Bank Morrison Community president. “It helps Morrison students and our

Doug
community by encouraging students to remain in the Sauk Valley. We are pleased to donate to the endowment efforts for Morrison schools.”
The Impact Program offers local students the opportunity to earn their tuition and fees at SVCC through
community service, requiring 25 volunteer hours each year in high school and college. To date, students have contributed over 100,000 hours of service to nonprofits, schools and community organizations across the Sauk Valley.
For more information or to discuss a gift to the Impact Program or the Mustang Impact Challenge, contact Kim Ewoldsen, executive director of Donor Relations & Economic Development, at kim.s.ewoldsen@svcc.edu or call 815-600-6267.

When I am craving something sweet, I like to find ways to satisfy that craving in a healthy way. Fruit usually does the trick for me, but sometimes I really want some chocolate.
Chocolate, in the form of unsweetened cocoa powder, has some health benefits. The health-promoting compounds found in cocoa powder include a category known as flavanols. Diets high in flavanols may improve cardiovascular health by relaxing blood vessels (which lowers blood pressure) and improving blood sugar control (which may help prevent diabetes).
The problem is that most people consume their chocolate in the form of candy, which contains unhealthy fat, sugar and excess calories that can outweigh the benefits of the

pure cocoa powder.
I have been known to add cocoa powder to my oatmeal, but I thought I’d share another favorite way to use it.
This recipe for a pudding made with cocoa powder, chia seeds and plant-based milk addresses your chocolate craving but improves the nutrition. Using plant-based milk (i.e., almond, cashew, oat, or soy milk) replaces saturated fat with healthier unsaturated fat. The chia seeds add protein and another dose of healthy unsaturated fat, but it’s the highly soluble fiber in the chia seed that allows the pudding to set. A small amount of maple syrup is used to sweeten the pudding. It’s totally optional, but the cinnamon enhances the sweetness a bit more and may be beneficial for blood sugar.
Recipe:
• 2 cups dairy-free milk
• ½ cup chia seeds
• ¼ cup cocoa powder
• 2 tablespoons maple syrup
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Add all ingredients to a highspeed blender and blend on high for 60 seconds. Transfer the mixture to a bowl, cover and refrigerate for at least four hours. It will keep in the refrigerator for four to five days.
Makes four servings. Calories will depend on the type of milk used. I use plain soy milk, which is 80 calories per cup. One serving using the soy milk is about 200 calories.
There are many chia seed pudding recipes out there that do not require blending. I like this blended version because it is smoother, and blending may make the healthy fats in the chia seeds more bioavailable, meaning that your body can absorb the nutrients more efficiently. Give this highly nutritious pudding a try any time you crave chocolate, even if it’s for breakfast!

Remember the flood of text messages we received in mid-2025 telling us we owned money for an unpaid toll?
Those tolls looked like they came from EZ Pass, Sunpass Toll or a similar sounding tollway payment system. These were good examples of phishing text messages – some people label them “smishing.” This went on for a couple of months – then stopped. Or did they?
A Clinton, Iowa, woman reported last week that crooks got into her bank account after she opened the link embedded with an EZ Pass smishing text she had received. This woman did some out-of-state travel over the Christmas holiday, so it seemed plausible to her that she perhaps missed a toll while driving. The text told her she owed $18.71.
When she opened the link, she saw a form displayed that required her to provide her debit card number and other personal information to make the payment. She filled out the form. A few days later, her bank called her to ask about eight debit card charges made to her account. The eight charges paid for everything from storage space rent to Tesla car charging.
So, it looks like the tollway fakes are back. But authorities report a lot more of these phishing texts. Just in the last week, we received warnings about:

• Texts offering information on your pending tax refund.
• Texts from IRS or state tax agencies warning you of unpaid taxes.
• Texts congratulating you on approval for your loan application.
The texts about taxes claim to originate from phony government agencies such as “Tax Resolution Oversight Department” or “Tax Mediation Agency.”
The basic goal of all these texts is to lure you into responding and engaging with the senders, who will work hard to steal personal information or money from you. Ignore them all. You can also report the texts by using the “report junk” option on your phone or forwarding the phony text to 7726 or “spam.”

Despite Erie-Prophetstown playing short-handed in Friday night’s Three Rivers East matchup at Newman, the upset-minded Panthers were threatening to hand the Associated Press Class 1A third-ranked Comets their second loss in three games.
But Newman’s depth helped make the difference as E-P ran out of gas down the stretch and the Comets won 63-54.
E-P (10-9, 3-4) was playing without leading scorer Connor Keegan, who was out due to illness while dealing with a shoulder injury, E-P coach Ryan Winckler said. Winckler said he should be back next week.
The Panthers led 15-14 after the first quarter and trailed just 48-45 after holding Newman (26-1, 7-1) to just eight points in the third quarter.
Then, Asher Ernst scored seven straight points to give Newman a 55-45 lead. The Comets outscored E-P 15-9 in the fourth quarter. Ernst finished with a game-high 16 points and John Rowzee added 12 and two blocks.
“I think we were lucky that they didn’t have their best player [Keegan], but I think we rebounded good in the second half,” Rowzee said. “We had three turnovers at half, that really helped us as well. We kind of brought the pressure back and we were able to cover the low post.”
Gus Schultz led the Panthers with 15 points and Evan Steimle had 13. Ethan Lavine added nine points and freshman Caleb Brown (nine points) hit a trio of 3-pointers in the third quarter to help keep E-P in striking distance.
In the fourth quarter, E-P’s shots started to fall short and passes were intercepted.
Keegan averages around 16 points and is one of E-P’s top outside shooters.
“Being able to extend the defense really could have helped open up even more inside,” Winckler said. “I thought we attacked inside so well tonight, but just having our best shooter out there, I think, would have really helped.”
Newman had six players combine for seven 3-pointers in the second quarter, but E-P continued to battle, trailing 40-33 at halftime.

Newman coach Ray Sharp said E-P is coached well and plays hard, which makes them a tough out.
“And they execute really well,” he said. “They got really good stuff against our 1-3-1.”
After losing their first game of the season last week at Mendota, the Comets responded with a second straight win.
“We played really poorly that night offensively and defensively,” Sharp said. “I think it just made them understand we’ve still got to get better every night.
“If we don’t match their intensity, we’re going to get beat.”
“That kind of motivated us,” Rowzee said, “and we don’t want to feel that again.”
Newman can still share the conference title should the Comets and Trojans both win out. Mendota has games
against Princeton, E-P and Kewanee left. Newman has Kewanee and Hall left in conference play.
Against E-P, Newman finished strong after a third-quarter lull.
“They have eight, nine guys they can rotate through and they’re so physical with the style that they play, up and down the court,” Winckler said of Newman. “We were just exhausted.
“Almost every one of our shots were short in the fourth quarter.”
Winckler was proud of the effort as the Panthers continue to show they can hang with good teams. His team will be battle-tested heading into the postseason with games against Oregon, Mendota and Byron to finish the regular season.
“I loved how we battled them all night long,” Winckler said. “That’s all you can ask out of your team.”

Looking to advance to the team dual state meet for just the second time in program history, Dixon took care of business Thursday.
The Dukes beat Morrison 57-20 at Oregon’s Blackhawk Center to advance to the Class 1A state quarterfinals in Bloomington at Grossinger Motors Arena. Dixon, ranked fifth by the IWCOA, will face No. 9 Belleville Althoff at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27. The semifinals and finals take place the following day. No. 1 Coal City faces Olympia in the opposite quarterfinal.
Lena-Winslow/Stockton beat Wheaton Academy 50-21 on the adjacent mat Thursday night.
Dixon’s Doolan Long started things off with a pin at 132 pounds, and the Dukes never trailed in the win. Jack Ragan won a 14-6 decision over Cael Wright before a forfeit wrapped things up.
Dixon is heading to the state duals for the first time since the Dukes took third in Class 2A during the 2016-17 season.
“It means a lot for us,” Ragan said. “We put a lot of effort into it.”
Morrison’s Patrick Schaefer won by technical fall in the second match to make it 6-5, but Dixon answered with wins from Charlie Connors (pin) and Preston Richards (tech fall).
Morrison’s Caleb Modglin had a pin at 157, but Noah Stout (major decision) and Eli Modglin (by forfeit) were the Mustangs’ only other wins on the night.
“That just sets the tone, starting off with a pin,” Ragan said of Long’s win to open the dual. “It just leads us to start rolling, and I like that I got to finish the night with a win.”
Adam Staples, Blake Dingley, Dawson Kemp, Dylan Bopes and Riley Paredes all added pins for the Dukes, and Gage Heath got a forfeit win at 106.
Ragan said the team feeds off one another in practice. The Dukes don’t have many holes in their lineup as a result.
“We’ve got great leaders,” Ragan said. “We saw what it looked like to get to state and we’ve been working hard ever since.”
Dixon also has nine wrestlers com-

peting at the Byron Sectional next Friday.
“Now it’s time to take care of the rest,” Paredes said. “Job’s not finished. Time to go finish the job.”
The Dukes started to see team state as a possibility as the season developed.
“We’re a good tournament team and a good dual team,” Paredes said. “I’m just really happy for the team and how we show that we can just come and dominate every single night and put on performances.
“We just have so many great wres -
tlers. It’s good just having that many good guys in the room beating up on each other.”
Morrison coach Tom Drosopoulos said Dixon is a tough team.
“We didn’t wrestle bad, they’re just a better team,” he said. “They have a full lineup and very consistent up and down the lineup, on top of some of their horses that they have. They have a good team.”
The Mustangs have a young team and raised their own bar after winning a regional title for the first time.
“Basically, everyone is coming
back,” Drosopoulos said. “We knew it was going to be an uphill battle against Dixon, because they have a tough team.
“[It is] more motivation for next year.”
Dixon coach Micah Hey said his team brought the energy from top to bottom. The Dukes will enjoy the win for a night before locking back in to prepare for the individual sectional a week away.
“We were kind of on a little bit of a roll tonight,” he said, “and it was going to be hard for them to stop us.”
