VILLA PARK – A hundred years’ worth of Villa Park memories were buried in two large time capsules during a ceremony Saturday at Village Hall. Those memories, however, are sure to resurface this weekend when they breathe life into a huge birthday party. A wide range of events are packed into the three-day Villa Park centennial celebration that starts today. “There’s a lot of excitement in the air. There’s a lot on the schedule,” Villa Park Village President Deborah Bullwinkel said. Today marks the actual 100-year anniversary of the village’s incorporation on Aug. 8, 1914. State Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, and a representative from Judy Baar Topinka’s state comptroller’s office are expected to attend and read proclamations congratulating Villa Park on 100 years. Rae Rupp Srch, chairwoman for the 100th Anniversary Committee, joked that she only has a few more sleepless nights as all of her planning culminates this weekend. The former village president (1993 to 2005) said the celebration is shaping up exactly how she envisioned it. “In some cases, beyond my expectations,” she said. “It is just so neat that people have so many great ideas and to have so many people working together.”

Saul Rodriguez, 25, of Villa Park was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, driving while Saul license revoked, Rodriguez obstructing a peace officer and improper use of registration, according to a Villa Park Police Department news release. The 2000 Chevrolet Silverado was reported stolen about 9 a.m. July 31 from a driveway in the 100 block of South Harvard Avenue in Villa Park. verado at 4:56 a.m. traveling eastbound on Sunset Drive at Addison Road. Rodriguez quickly drove to an alley on the next block and parked. He exited the vehicle and fled on foot, refusing to stop for the officer, who eventually caught Rodriguez after a short foot chase, the release said. Rodriguez was taken to the DuPage County Jail where he was held on a $75,000 bond. Rodriguez also is on parole with the Illinois Department of Corrections for burglary, according to the release.

‘Perfect storm’ creates ideal market By DAVID GOOD dgood@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – This is the type of summer storm homeowners and homebuyers both can appreciate. Overall, it’s still a seller’s market because there are more buyers than homes to choose from, which drives up demand and sale prices, said Doug MacArtney, managing broker for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s Lombard branch. Buyers, however, still have plenty of incentive to act, according to MacArtney. “It’s like the perfect storm we’ve all been waiting for for years,” he said. “For buyers, if you buy now, in five years, your property is probably go-

ing to be worth more – it’s a pretty safe bet. And interest rates are still low.” The number of homes sold in Villa Park in June was up slightly (25 to 32) from June of 2013, according to data provided by Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. Despite that increase, MacArtney said overall numbers so far this year show a drop in home sales, which he said is a reflection of lower inventory to start the year. But a rise in homes on the market in the last several months could help satisfy the buyer demand and boost the number of homes sold in the near future. “We’re anticipating a more vibrant sales market this summer because of the increase in inventory,” he said.

Villa Park home prices were up 33 percent this June over June 2013. The median sale price went from $179,000 last June to $237,500 in 2014, according to the Realtors data. This June also saw a jump from the previous month’s $210,200 median price. While property values could be on the rise, MacArtney said the jump in sales prices this June compared to last is more an indication that more high-end homes were sold. MacArtney did not discount the possibility that home values have risen and emphasized that the current demand for homes makes 2014 a good year to sell. “If you’ve been contemplating a sale, now may be great time to do so,” he said.

Seniors feel relief from August’s heat waves at York Township Summer heat waves are common in the month of August, so please remember that York Township Hall at 1502 S. Meyers Road is an official cooling center for senior citizens. Seniors who need relief from the heat can stay in our air-conditioned auditorium, open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If there is an event or class going on in COMMUNITY the auditorium, please be disVOICE creet. Either join in or find John W. a comfy chair in the hallway Valle until the event is over. I want to remind everyone that all senior citizens should take extra precautions during heat waves and are advised to stay in air-conditioned spaces at least several hours during the daytime. On extra-hot days, anyone without air conditioning should take refuge with family or friends whose homes are cooled. Other alternatives are public buildings such as libraries, park districts, shopping malls and, of course, York Township Hall. And, Township Hall is much more than a cooling center for seniors. In addition to our senior nutrition programs, York Township Senior Center provides a variety of activities and services for senior citizens in order to help improve their quality of life. Our members enjoy weekly bridge and pinochle games, woodcarving, yoga, art classes, beginner and advanced line dancing, tai chi class and Yuan Ji Chinese dance. Services for our seniors include a barber, beautician, income tax preparation, and twice monthly free blood pressure checks as well as free Internet access in our library. We offer many one-day trips to local sights and attractions and we also host in house parties. Almost every Tuesday, there is a free movie along with free popcorn. We also sponsor many informational seminars, and offer referrals and services, including legal aid, rules of the road, and mature driving classes. We help our seniors with applications for assistance programs such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Benefit Access Program, Senior Health Insurance Programs, and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. We publish the Senior Sun Newsletter 10 times a year and it lets our senior members know all the activities we have going on. Don’t run over road kill Anybody who runs over road kill in daylight, should have their license suspended for a month and made to clean up all the road kill, especially skunks. It’s obvious people are not paying attention as they’re driving. And with the skunks, if you hit that scent pack, they’re gonna smell.

Some residents should live in a dome I’m responding to the letter writer about dogs peeing in their yard and how gross it is. They might wanna put a dome over their house. Because I have seen hundreds of squirrels, skunks, raccoons, possums, birds, rabbits and cats, to name a few, in people’s yards. Do they really think not one of those mammals pee in their yards? A dome would be good. And while we’re at it, while you’re out walking yourself, watch out for things coming out of trees because squirrels, skunks, raccoons and birds all live in trees. And you never know what will come out of them. So, I just thought I’d mention that, get a dome.

I’m calling about more green space in La Grange at Ashland and Harris avenues. There is a lot that used to be a funeral home that’s been empty for more than eight years. It’s now being zoned to possibly be a condominium complex within that neighborhood. There are numerous large condo buildings and apartment buildings, and we don’t need that. What we need in La Grange is green space. It could be a community garden. It could be a lovely, enhancing part of the village, as opposed to more buildings, especially when that large apartment complex is going to be built not too far away on the corner of Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road. So, let’s go for more green space in La Grange and petition the village to buy that lot and turn it into green space for the residents of La Grange. Thank you.

Task force to study heroin effects in middle schools VILLA PARK – The task force created to study the impact of heroin on teens in high school has refocused its efforts to include researching the effects of heroin in middle schools. The law, sponsored by state Sen. Tom Cullerton, D-Villa Park, was signed by Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday. The Young Adults Heroin Use Task Force was created last year and found addiction to heroin was beginning as early as sixth grade. “This devastating drug is hurting younger and younger students,” Cullerton said in a news release. “We need to accurately understand the scope of the heroin problem as we work to fix it.”

DuPage GOP Chairwoman Darlene Ruscitti and Lyons Township GOP committeeman James Falvey convened a committee, which appointed Nybo to be sworn in and fulfill the term. The overwhelming majority of the district is in DuPage County with a few precincts in Western Springs that define the makeup of the nominating committee. Ruscitti, who represents more than 95 percent of the GOP weighted vote in the district, said in a news release she nominated Nybo because voters had already chosen him in the March primary. After DuPage County Circuit Judge Brian McKillip swore in Nybo, the senator thanked supporters and family. His wife, Faye, as well as their children, Connor, Olivia and Allison, joined Nybo while he spoke about his new job.

Freddie Mac Executes First Sale of Seriously Delinquent Loans From Its Investment Portfolio MCLEAN, VA--(Marketwired Aug 1, 2014) - Freddie Mac (OTCQB: FMCC) today announced it has sold deeply delinquent loans from its investment portfolio. The transaction consists of $659 million in unpaid principal balance of loans. It is expected to close later this month. The sale was conducted via a competitive auction at the end of July and executed indirectly through Bank of America affiliates. Twenty-two prospec-

tive buyers participated in the auction. Freddie Mac selected the winning bidder on the basis of economics. The transaction was well received by the market and Freddie Mac will continue to look for opportunities to reduce exposure to less liquid assets in its investment portfolio. In particular, fraudsters are dressing up their Web sites and sales pitches with patriotic imagery so consumers will confuse them with Making Home Affordable, a federal effort the Obama administration launched to help underwater or delinquent homeowners refinance or modify their mortgages. But instead of helping, these fraud artists are likely to charge up-front fees for services that are free elsewhere or, worse, talk owners into signing their deeds away for an empty promise to fix their mortgage problems. Enjoy a game and meal at StoneHouse Pub LEMONT – I made a terrible mistake when I ordered my meal at StoneHouse Pub. Don’t get me wrong – the dish I ordered tasted fantastic. I really enjoyed every bite, the flavor, texture, quality of ingredients. It was all perfect. The server tried to warn me, “Are you sure that’s what you want to order?” I wasn’t really paying close attention like I should have. I was engrossed in conversation with my two dining companions, and had picked something absentmindedly. “Yes, I’m sure,” I said. This is a great example of why diners should always listen to their servers. The strangest part of all? I could see myself ordering it again. And regretting it again. The stuffed burger at StoneHouse Pub in Lemont is probably the largest sandwich I’ve ever seen, aside from ridiculous eating competitions on TV. It’s billed as three-quarters of a pound of Angus beef burger, stuffed with the diner’s choice of two ingredients. I chose American cheese and onions. I guess it hadn’t really registered consciously exactly how big that was going to be when I ordered it, but I was certainly brought back to reality when it was delivered. You know how burger commercials on TV make their sandwiches look impossibly tall, but then you order one at a fast-food joint and it’s about a centimeter thick? This was the impressive TV version, except with a high-quality bun, fresh tomato slices, and some of the best-tasting beef patties I’ve ever tried. Knowing that the server had questioned the wisdom of my order, and feeling like I’d be in for some ribbing if I failed to consume the whole thing, I resolved right then that I would not leave Stone-

House Pub without finishing this behemoth. While I was working my way through three meals’ worth of cheeseburger, my companions were enjoying much more reasonable dinners. One had the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries, and the other went for the cod fish sandwich, a deepfried filet served with lettuce, tomato and onion. They were both well-pleased by their orders. We were fortunate to be at StoneHouse on the night of a major sporting event, and the pub filled up over the course of our time there with fans enjoying the convivial atmosphere. As the only sports fan among our trio (sports and overeating go together, right?), I was caught up in the enthusiasm. This is clearly a great place to see a game. For an eatery that doesn’t put on airs or claim to be a fine dining establishment, StoneHouse, nevertheless, clearly takes the food part of its business seriously. There were wraps, salads, pizza, baby back ribs, tacos, baked tilapia and a variety of items on the menu when we visited. As the evening wore on, I became less and less an active participant in our group’s conversation, as I focused on the task before me. My taste buds still wanted more, but my stomach was starting to

Montini grad prepping for breakout season at Nebraska By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com After redshirting his first year on campus, Jordan Westerkamp, a Montini graduate from Lombard, had a big impact for Nebraska’s football team last year. reported for fall camp Sunday, so we’re pretty much done with that now. Santaromita: Nebraska is known for its fan base. What have you noticed about Nebraska fans? Westerkamp: It’s awesome. The fan base here is so amazing. There’s so many people that are a part of it throughout the entire nation. Our Fan Day [which was Aug. 1] is a great day to have where we get to connect to fans and show our appreciation to them as well because they are very loyal and they do so much for us.

Santaromita: What was your summer schedule like? Westerkamp: Throughout our summer, we had our strength and conditioning proSantaromita: Was the Hail Mary gram where we were lifting catch against Northwestern the weights and conditioning and biggest cheer you’ve ever received doing our speed workouts. Westerkamp: Yeah, absolutely. 90,000 people here for that one. I was fortunate to have that play happen. It was a great experience and a great time, but I don’t like to dwell on the past too much. I’m looking forward now to this season. Santaromita: Are you expecting to have a little bigger impact on the team this season? Westerkamp: I just want to be able to contribute as much as possible to help the success of the team. Last year was a great year to get my feet wet and get playing time. I enjoyed it. I made some mistakes, made some plays, learned from it so now I’m just going into another year with a little bit more experience.

Santaromita: Do you still keep track of things at Montini at all? Westerkamp: Yeah, I stay in touch with my old head coach Chris Andriano. I always stay in touch with him. I try to stay in touch with him during the season, but it’s hard because our season is going on as well. I was able to get home and visit there this past May and go say hi to all my coaches and see some old friends, so that was good. Santaromita: What are your goals for this upcoming season? Westerkamp: Our team goal is to win the Big Ten and win a national championship. Starting with fall camp and this past summer we’re going to do everything we can to achieve that.

COLLEGE: Michigan State HIGH SCHOOL: Hinsdale Central YEAR: Junior POSITION: Offensive lineman Allen enters this fall slated to start for the third year in a row. After redshirting his first year on campus in 2011, Allen has played in 25 games with 24 starts since 2012. All but five of those starts have come at center, where he is expected to play this season. The Spartans are defending Big Ten champions, and Allen is one of three players who started on the offensive line in Michigan State’s Rose Bowl win against Stanford that are slated to return.

COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Bolingbrook YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Quarterback Bailey, listed at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, used his size, speed and overall athleticism to get on the field in his first year on campus. He played in nine games, being mostly used as a goal-line quarterback. Bailey ran for three touchdowns and passed for one more, all from 10 yards or less. Overall, he ran for 83 yards on 20 carries and was 2-for-5 for four yards through the air. Nathan Scheelhaase, a four-year starter at quarterback, is gone, but Wes Lunt, a highly touted transfer from Oklahoma State will battle for playing time with Bailey and fellow local product Reilly O’Toole.

The 6-foot-2, 290-pounder finished sixth on the Illini with 53 tackles and also added 5 ½ tackles for loss, one forced fumble and three quarterback hurries. COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Lyons Township YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Cornerback/kick returner Harris’ first game action came on special teams, both on kickoffs and kick returns. With Venric Mark injured for most of the season, Harris became the Wildcats’ primary kickoff returner. He took 21 kicks for 484 yards, including a 47-yard return against Western Michigan. As a cornerback, Harris started the last five games of the season, totaling 36 tackles and being named to ESPN.com’s Big Ten All-Freshman team. He was one of just two true freshmen to play last season for Northwestern.

COLLEGE: Illinois HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South YEAR: Senior POSITION: Quarterback Entering his fourth and final year with the Illini, O’Toole has seen action behind center in each of his first three seasons. As a junior, he played in six games, completing 12-of-16 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 34 yards. O’Toole started twice as a sophomore, finishing with 564 yards and six touchdowns that year, after taking part in 10 games as a freshman.

COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Proviso West YEAR: Senior POSITION: Wide receiver The USC transfer has struggled to make his mark in two seasons at Northwestern. In the past two years, he has combined for 19 receptions and 113 yards without catching any touchdowns. Entering his senior season, Prater is hoping to match the expectations placed on him out of high school. His 59 yards last season ranked ninth on the team, but three of the players who finished ahead of him were seniors.

COLLEGE: Northwestern HIGH SCHOOL: Wheaton Warrenville South YEAR: Junior POSITION: Superback In just two seasons for the Wildcats, this WWS graduate already has carved out quite a solid career for himself. After receiving playing time as a true freshman, Vitale started all 12 games in 2013 as a superback (a combination fullback and tight end). Catching at least one pass in every contest, the incoming junior finished third on Northwestern with 34 receptions for 382 yards, which included a five-catch, 101yard performance against California. He also hauled in three touchdowns.

COLLEGE: Iowa HIGH SCHOOL: Glenbard West YEAR: Junior POSITION: Offensive line After seeing spot duty and playing in seven games in 2012, Walsh ascended to a starting position last fall and was entrenched at right guard for all 13 contests. The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder helped the Hawkeyes total nearly 500 yards of offense in each of the team’s first two games of the 2013 season while also playing a role in Iowa rushing for over 200 yards in five straight games to begin the 2013 campaign.

COLLEGE: Nebraska HIGH SCHOOL: Montini YEAR: Sophomore POSITION: Wide receiver Westerkamp made a big impression as a redshirt freshman for the Cornhuskers. He played in all 13 games and started the Gator Bowl win against Georgia. He was third on Nebraska with 283 receiving yards and fourth in receptions with 20. He also had 19 punt returns for 51 yards. Westerkamp’s only touchdown came against Northwestern on a 49-yard Hail Mary on the last play of the game to give the Huskers the win. This fall, he could see play a bigger role in the offense as the second-leading wide receiver among returners.
