LOMBARD – For SUPER Plunge veteran Mike McDermott, the toughest part of the annual fundraising event is that first jump into an icy Lake Michigan. “I don’t care how many times you’ve done it,” said McDermott, of Lombard. “The first one will suck every breath out of your body.” Forty-three individuals participated in the 9th Annual Special Olympics Illinois SUPER Plunge, held last weekend at North Beach on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston. During the 24-hour event which began at 2 p.m. Feb. 21, participants jumped into Lake Michigan once an hour. The event, which raised a total of $166,621 this year, kicked off the 2014 Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge season, and proceeds will support Special Olympics athletes who compete free of charge in more than 180 sporting events throughout the year. In it’s first seven years, the SUPER plunge raised $545,000 for Special Olympics Illinois. Each individual was asked to raise a minimum of $2,500

TIF study OK’d for Garden Station redevelopment By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Villa Park officials are looking to create a tax increment financing district intended to aid redevelopment of a part of the village’s downtown that will include the future Garden Station project. The Villa Park Village board of trustees Monday voted unanimously to approve a $26,000 contract requesting a feasibility study to determine the possibility of establishing the TIF district in the North Ardmore area. Trustee Donald Kase was absent from the meeting. A TIF is a public financing method typically used for re-

development and other community-improvement projects. Ehlers & Associates will conduct the study, which will determine if the area qualifies as a redevelopment project area under the TIF Act. The North Ardmore area, bordered by Vermont Street, Douglas Avenue, Terrace Street and Harvard Avenue, is the location of Garden Station, a cityblock-long residential redevelopment project from Golden

Spike Development. Rick Goldman, principal of Golden Spike, already owns the land where Garden Station will be constructed, and has agreed to foot the bill for the feasibility study. The village began working with Golden Spike on the Garden Station development in 2008, but the economy slowed progress, Goldman said Monday while addressing the village board. “From 2008 to 2013, the development world was basically shut down,” Goldman said. “[But] waiting was wise and now we’re poised and ready to go.” The development will be a “gateway to Villa Park,” Villa Park President Deborah Bull-

winkel said prior to Monday’s meeting. While there are some residents who have raised concerns about the redevelopment project, including the height of the building, a majority of residents are on board, she said. “They see that the project looks good and will bring jobs to the area,” Bullwinkel said. The feasibility study is expected to take four to six months, Goldman said, adding that the firm likely won’t break ground on the development until March 2015. The village board also voted 4-2 to approve a resolution to “induce the redevelopment of certrain properties within the proposed redevelopment area.”

Trustees Chris Aiello and Bob Wagner, both uncomfortable with the document’s language, voted against the resolution. The resolution will allow Golden Spike the opportunity to be reimbursed for future expenditures related to the development – including the TIF feasibility study and architectural fees – but only if a TIF is established and the village approves a redevelopment agreement, village attorney Jim Binninger said. “This does not commit the village to anything,” Binninger said. “This is nothing more than a timing issue that allows the developer to proceed, [but] it is on condition of a redevelopment agreement.”

LOMBARD – Healthy Lombard hosted its annual Fitness February Fair last Saturday in the center court at Yorktown Shopping Center in Lombard. The event featured 26 local vendors, all of whom had interactive features for guests. Participants received a card at the welcome table, and those who completed 16 of the 26 activities were automatically entered into a raffle to win prizes.

Activities included a bean bag toss, food quizzes, chair massages and demonstrations, including a student Zumba class from Glenbard East High School and martial arts from Sky Centers in Lombard. On the final day of the Olympics, an assembly is held where teams can make a final push to donate to their favorite Facial Hair February participant, at which time the totals are collected and a winner is announced, Scott said. Between Facial Hair February and the Brook Olympics, the school community has a nice collaboration leading into Relay For Life, Bazon said. “The kids realize it’s bigger than just who they are – that there is a greater good out there helping people,” he said. “Every year we always get one or two kids that will thank you because their parents or someone they know is sick.”

For the past three years, the fundraiser has been held in collaboration with the school’s Blue Crew Brook Olympics, a spirit week also intended as a fundraising engine for the American Cancer Society, explained social studies teacher Matt Scott, who co-sponsors the Blue Crew with Cristy Hebreard. The Brook Olympics, held from March 10 to 14, pits each grade level against each other in activities and games where participants earn medals and team points similar to the Olympic Games, Scott said. Along with the competition, the students sell T-shirts and other memorabilia, with profits being rolled into the Facial Hair February donations and the total being donated

Former Miss Addison uses beauty, brains on ‘Survivor: Cagayan’ By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ADDISON – Addison residents who caught the premiere of the latest season of “Survivor” on Wednesday may have recognized former Miss Addison Alexis Maxwell among the castaway contestants. “We watched it as a family since season one,” the 21-yearold Northwestern student said. Her father Ron, the biggest “Survivor” fan of the family, convinced her to apply with him for a spot on the show. In the spirit of fun, Alexis Maxwell put together her audition tape in a day. As she continued through the selection process, she couldn’t believe she might actually be cast. When she finally was chosen as one of 18 contestants for “Survivor: Cagayan,” the show’s 28th season, Maxwell decided to play not only for herself, but her dad, who wasn’t cast on the show. District 88 to host heroin awareness events in coming weeks In 2013, there were 45 heroin-related deaths in DuPage County. That number surpasses the county’s record of 38 heroin-related deaths in 2012. At District 88, we’re committed to reversing this trend and helping put an end to the heroin epidemic in the county. The safety of students and staff is our No. 1 priority, and COMMUNITY District 88 will host several VOICE events to educate students Scott and parents/guardians about the heroin issue in the county Helton and state and the dangers of that illegal drug. I was honored to participate in a Heroin Awareness Prevention Panel on Feb. 20 at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Addison. The goal of that event was to have a discussion panel with a multifaceted perspective on the effects of heroin use in the community. The LTM Heroin Awareness and Support Foundation was a featured speaker on the panel and provided a resource table with heroin awareness handouts. In partnership with the DuPage County Regional Office of Education, local police officials and high schools throughout DuPage County, District 88 will host a Student Leadership Symposium on Feb. 28 at Willowbrook. The symposium will bring student leaders from throughout the county together to create awareness and understanding of the rise of drug use in the county, especially heroin. On March 18, Addison Trail and the Addison Police Department will host a Heroin Awareness presentation for parents/ guardians and students. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Addison Trail and will focus on the dangers of heroin and how to support those who might be struggling with addiction. The event is meant for students in sixth through twelfth grades and their parents/guardians. Willowbrook will host a similar event starting at 7 p.m. on March 11. They spent the month growing facial hair as part of their seventh annual fundraiser benefiting the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of District 88 All Youth. Don Bricker has been named publisher of The Herald-News and the Morris Daily Herald, Shaw Media announced Feb. 21. Shaw Media is the parent company of Suburban Life Media. Bricker, who also serves as vice president of Shaw Media’s Suburban Group Publishing, will be based in The Herald-News office in Joliet. Shaw Media recently purchased The Herald-News from Sun-Times Media. She prepared, she played, and now she has to watch the whole game on national television. “It’s definitely exciting and nerve-racking,” said Maxwell, who refused to watch recordings of her high school theater performances during her Addison Trail High School days because she was too critical of herself. Armed with a big personality, big appetite for adventure, and big hair, Alexis was cast as a member of the Beauty Tribe. “I don’t care what I look like at all,” said Maxwell, who rarely wears makeup to class. She thinks the label was an interesting choice because beauty is so subjective, but she also wanted to use the label to her advantage. With a double major in learning and organizational change and psychology, Maxwell anticipated people would underestimate her other skills since she’d enter the game defined by her looks. “’Survivor’ is just all about the social game,” Maxwell said. While she was crowned Miss Addison in 2009, she had never before competed in a

usy adults need to make the most of their time. Work and family commitments keep down time to a minimum, so taking on the additional load of a college student is a big decision. They need a program that makes the most of their time. Courses that are directly applicable to the career, and partnerships with students who take their college experience seriously, and have similar goals. With that in mind, Northwood University’s DuPage campus in Glen Ellyn location offers an Adult Degree Program, which gives students the opportunity to pursue their education while maintaining the flexibility they need to balance family, work and school. “Northwood offers evening, weekend or online formats, as well as innovative options like our ‘3+1’ degree program, which allows students the opportunity to complete three years of coursework at partnership institutions

like College of DuPage and Harper College, before completing their final year at Northwood University,” said Ann Marie Rosen, regional development manager. The Northwood University student generally arrives with prior college credits from another university or community college. Many have been out of college for a while or took a break to focus on their career and family. They also have some students who are just beginning their university education. The Glen Ellyn Adult Degree Program Center offers a variety of degrees in both hybrid (a blend of face-to-face and online) and completely online formats. Classes are designed in partnership with industry specialists and advisory boards and are taught by experts who are active in the business world. Along with its Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management and Marketing, the Glen Ellyn campus also offers

seven fully online degree programs including aftermarket management, automotive marketing management, health care management, marketing, entrepreneurship, management and finance as well as an online Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership. Northwood students work with one advisor from application all the way to graduation, assisting them with registration, academic advising, financial aid and ordering books. “With classes in eight-week and weekend formats, students can complete two or more courses in the same 16-weeks it takes traditional students to complete one class,” she says. Health Department trains police on heroin reversal drug By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com Fine mists of water sprayed the air Friday at the DuPage County Health Department during a training session for area police officers, in an effort to ensure 2013’s record number of heroin overdose deaths isn’t repeated. The lesson was part of the department’s DuPage Narcan Program, which puts the non-addictive drug Naloxone, or Narcan, in the hands of local police, allowing them to reverse the effects of an opiate overdose. With a rising number of DuPage County heroin-related deaths in recent years, including 46 in 2013, the drug could be a valuable tool, said Health Department Executive Director Karen Ayala. “These numbers are not nameless, nor are they faceless,” she said. “Each one represents a life lost.” Police are often the first responders to the scene of a drug overdose, sometimes be-

She said the department’s $40,000 investment has sufficiently funded the program, including the $16 individual doses of Narcan, through its most recent training session. The department was looking for partners in the medical community to continue it. This represents one of many county government actions to address what officials call a growing epidemic, including the $100,000 education initiative Be a Hero in DuPage. It is also the first county-wide application of a 2010 state law allowing nonmedical personnel to be trained to use the drug, Ayala said. Jorgensen said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin is working on language for a bill clarifying that trained responders using Narcan can’t be held liable in a civil case. Villa Park Police Chief and member of the DuPage Chiefs of Police Association Robert Pavelchik said the association already had a subcommittee devoted to the topic, but thought more needed to be done.

By keeping people alive, he said, it keeps the chance for recovery alive. “One of the people that we work with says that ‘Dying of an overdose is not the first step for recovery or treatment,’ ” Jorgensen said. “You have to understand that this is a medical disease, this is an addiction, this is a serious medical problem and we all know people who have either died of drug or alcohol problems and also recovered from drug or alcohol problems. These people are not lost to society.”

Get a homestyle meal at Bulldog Ale House CAROL STREAM – Sometimes you just want a homestyle meal, a plethora of beer options, and a classy atmosphere to possibly take in a game. Bulldog Ale House takes the concept of a neighborhood sports pub and combines it with a full-service dining room. The bar area is partitioned off from the diners, meaning you can feel free to bring your family for dinner and not have to fret about any sports fans’ exuberance spoiling your meal. On a recent visit, I opted for one of the few seats not in direct view of a TV, primarily because it was a slow night in the sporting world. That was a good thing, because it allowed me to focus on the food. My companion, not much of a sports fan, was indifferent to the televised display, but had a great time regardless. Located in the Fountains at Town Center subdivision just off Lies Road in Carol Stream, Bulldog Ale House could, at first glance, be mistaken for a local version of an Applebee’s, but that’s not true at all. There’s nothing kitschy about Bulldog, just a clean, nicely decorated and well-maintained eatery with a focus on food and beer. Wanting to get a sense of what’s offered, we started out with the “super grande platter” of mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, chicken tenders and warm pretzels. As mozzarella sticks were apparently in short supply that night, my dining companion was delighted at the chance to substitute mini corn dogs instead. Served with a variety of dipping sauces, it could easily serve as a meal for two all on its own. We ordered entrees nonetheless, knowing we’d end up taking most of the meal home for leftovers – you can’t very well review a restaurant off a single appetizer. I selected the beef Stroganoff, a childhood favorite of mine that can be excellent when made well and terrible when not. In this case,

roast over the pot pie, reasoning that the pot pie likely wouldn’t reheat as well. The pot roast is cooked in a red ale gravy with carrots, red onions and celery, and served with garlic mashed potatoes. Not usually a fan of cooked carrots, my companion enjoyed every morsel, proclaiming the various flavors complemented each other perfectly. Bulldog Ale House offers 32 beers on draft and 22 in bottles at the Carol Stream

the standard varieties you’d expect at any bar, and some more esoteric brands, such as Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse, Half Acre Daisy Cutter and Shock Top Belgian White. If you enjoy a draft brew, there’s probably something here for you. As you might’ve guessed, we didn’t have room for dessert, but would’ve been interested in the giant chocolate chip cookie (topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup) or

whipped cream and chocolate syrup). But then, who’s going to make it as far as dessert when the appetizer and meal portions are so tasty and generous? Maybe if we just split an entree …

Dream debut By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com CHAMPAIGN – Willowbrook sophomore Matt Rowland got his first taste of what state wrestling is like, and now he wants more. Rowland placed fifth in Class 3A at 152 pounds over the weekend at the State Farm Center in Champaign. He won his first match, lost a quarterfinal to eventual undefeated state champion Bryce Brill of Mt. Carmel, and went 3-1 in the wrestlebacks to earn a medal. “It feels pretty good,” Rowland said. “It’s a good way to end my coach’s career because he’s retiring after this season. And to go out with a win is

Rowland hopes he can add more medals and move up the places over the next two years. Finishing fifth as a sophomore in his first state appearance is a good step. “Coming out of the tunnel my first time I had some jitters in my first match, but I got them out and got it done,” Rowland said. “[The key to moving up the podium is] working hard, putting in the work in the offseason and following in Steve Congenie’s footsteps.” Congenie was a three-time medalist and two-time state champion who graduated in 2011. In addition to him, Rowland is chasing after his brother’s accomplishments.

Dan Rowland was a two-time medalist, finishing his career as the runner-up at 170 pounds last year. Dan gave Matt some advice ahead of the state tournament. “He said to just wrestle how you are, just wrestle your match,” Matt Rowland said. The sophomore said his speed was effective against his state opponents, but he needs to work on his escapes and wrestling when he is down on the mat. He finished the season with a 46-6 record. Senior Jake Kroeger also competed at state and went 1-2 at 182 pounds. He lost his first match and won a match in the wrestlebacks before being eliminated.

Five Broncos won state titles and six more earned medals as Montini was well represented on the medal stand. Dylan Duncan (120 pounds), Kegan Calkins (126), Vince Turk (138), Chris Garcia (145) and Xavier Montalvo (170) added their names to a growing list of Montini state champions. Garcia and Montalvo won their second consecutive state titles and Garcia finished his career as a fourtime medalist. “This is the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life,” said Calkins, a transfer from Wheaton North. “I worked so hard for this one moment and to be the best.” The senior, who is still undecided on where he will wrestle in college next year, made sure he wasn’t going to let any opportunities pass him by at state. “It’s my last shot, I was just going to give it everything I had and wrestle my best match and leave it all out there,” Calkins said. On the heels of the girls volleyball team’s Class 2A state title in the fall, the girls basketball team earned its first trip to state by defeating Seton Academy 40-38 in a 2A supersectional at Concordia University Monday night. The Knights (25-6) led the entire game and held off the Sting (19-9) down the stretch. IC led 26-15 at halftime, but the Sting gradually got back

She will return to the site of the volleyball championship, Redbird Arena. “Getting to state is amazing,” Manion said. “It’s something that my sisters haven’t

done in their high school careers for either sport so getting it for both sports in my senior year is just absolutely indescribable and awesome.” Vitek is a 5-foot-11 guard that presents match up problems for opponents thanks to her all-around game and length. Manion is a physical 6-foot forward that leads the team with 9.4 rebounds per game. “Grace and I are partners, basically,” Manion said. “We’re always running the pick and roll. We’re always working as a team.” In the state semifinal, the Knights will take on Prophetstown, which is about 40 miles northeast of Moline. Prophetstown has won more

than 20 games in 14 of the past 16 season, but this is their first state appearance The Lady Prophets enter with a 30-2 record and have a 23-game winning streak dating back to a Dec. 11 loss. Meanwhile, IC has rattled off 16 wins in a row since falling to York on Jan. 3. Regardless of the results in Normal, the Knights will be claiming their first ever state trophy. “This is just great for the school,” coach Aubree Lawrence-Schuett said. “This has never happened in school history for us so I’m thrilled for the kids, I’m thrilled for the community. This is going to be fantastic. I’m looking forward to it.”

I just focused on winning one match at a time, just focusing on that next match ahead of me.

What did you do well at state?

What was key to the third place match against Glenbard North’s Kirk Johansen? I wrestled him at sectionals in the quarterfinals. I don’t think [having wrestled him before] made a big difference. I wrestled him in IKWF [Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation] when we were in eighth grade, so I knew what he was going to do and he knew what I was going to do, so it was good.

Do you have any plans for college yet? I’m not sure yet [where I’m going], but I’m definitely going to wrestle in college.

Steve Cox earned a nice accolade before the college baseball season even began. The Concordia University senior relief pitcher and Willowbrook High School graduate was a second-team selection to D3baseball.com’s preseason All-American team. Last season as a junior, Cox made 17 appearances out of the bullpen and recorded 13 saves as the Cougars went 39-7 and finished the season ranked No. 16 in the country. His 13 saves were the third-most in Division III. He allowed just one unearned run in his 16 innings and fanned 20 batters while walking four.

Young players like freshman Mike Finley and sophomore Patrick Peterkin have shown flashes of their potential, but will have to put it together if the Rams are to make a playoff run. East opens up on the road at Bartlett, which finished 4-8 in the Upstate Eight Valley. The winner of that game takes on No. 5 seed Conant, which the Rams beat for a regional title last year.

Proviso East, OPRF and Morton are the next three seeds, in order, after the Dukes. York could see Lyons Township in a regional final, which would be the fourth meeting between the teams this season.
