Villa Park resident Leonard Sutkevich on Monday describes the history of flooding on his block during a Village Board of Trustees meeting. The village is collecting preliminary data to compile a comprehensive flood plan. study will focus on Addison Street north of Madison Street, Jackson Pond, Lufkin ponds, the 800 block of South Michigan Ave. and areas near Terry Lane. “This study will take a closer look at low-lying areas where you see a lot of residential flooding and structure damage,” Derrick Martin, water resources group manager for V3, told trustees Monday night. The two studies, along with a combined sewer study being conducted by RJN Associates, will be compiled and given to the village’s public works

department once completed. Study costs will be divided between the village’s Storm Water Buyout Fund and the Wastewater Fund, which in total has about $1 million. Once the studies are finished, staff can then begin working on prioritizing projects, Villa Park Public Works Director Vydas Juskelis said. The large part of any project will entail expanding detention areas or putting the water underground, he added. “You need to find a place to put the water,” Juskelis said. The village is considering implementing a Stormwater

Utility Fund, which would provide a dedicated source of funding for stormwater projects. Under the fund, all properties in the village would pay a stormwater utility fee based on the demand that their property places on the stormwater management system, according to the proposed plan. The fee, calculated about $5.45 annually, would be an alternative to raising property taxes or cutting services. A credit program would also be implemented to recognize efforts made to reduce impact on the village’s drainage system, with up to 50-percent reductions, according to the department. If adopted, all funds would be used for projects addressing problems solely in Villa Park, village manager Rich Keehner said. VILLA PARK – The Villa Park Village Board of Trustees took several steps Monday night to move forward with a comprehensive flood plan, starting with the first study done on the village’s flood plain since 1983. The village board voted unanimously to approve contracts from Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd. and V3 Engineering to conduct studies that will identify problem areas and prioritize future flood control projects throughout the village. Burke, of Rosemont, submitted a proposal for $110,000 to conduct a study that will use hydrologic and hydraulic computer modeling methods to determine existing levels of flood protection and to develop drainage improvements. The study will encompass the entire village outside the Sugar Creek basin. V3, of Woodridge, submitted a proposal of $69,735 to conduct a study of the Sugar Creek basin and will include flood routing information, inundation maps and proposed mitigation alternative. The

We have got to do something.”

Village trustees approve flood studies

mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – Snow crunches beneath Mike McNett’s feet as he uses a hand auger to drill a hole into the thick ice on the pond at Westmore Woods in Lombard. The water makes a “slooshing” sound as he retracts the drill and clears away ice fragments bobbing on the surface of the water. It’s a frigid Monday afternoon, despite the abundant sunshine, and McNett, a Lombard resident and USA Ice Team captain, is getting in a few minutes of practice. Team USA will leave Saturday morning to compete in the 11th World Ice Fishing Championship in Belarus – a country that borders Poland, Ukraine and Russia. The championship, Feb. 18 to 24, is held in the country’s Minsk region in an area commonly used as a Summer Olympics training ground for local rowers. “If there is any way to bring international countries and people together, it’s fishing,” he said. McNett, 48, sets the line on his palm rod and lowers the slack below the surface of the pond. The palm rod, which typically measures between just 4 and 7 inches, includes a small indicator and allows an ice angler to sense the smallest bite on their line.

He repeats the steps a couple times before catching a small bluegill and retrieving it from the hole. In the world championship, speed is the name of the game. The course is divided into five zones, and one angler from each team occupies a given zone. The two-day competition includes a three-hour heat each day. The total weigh of fish caught per team in the six hours determines the winner. For McNett, who won the national championship at the 2005 North American Ice Fishing Circuit, the difference between U.S. events and the world championship is the lack of technology allowed on the international level. Fishers are prohibited from using underwater cameras and other high-tech gadgets to locate and attract fish. “When you go to the world [event], you’re actually going back in time,” McNett said. “You’re using your intuition and [fish] feed to attract the fish.” Fishers can drill as many holes as they like, but only two can be marked at any point. game plan but also critical to know when to bail on the plan quickly when the fish aren’t biting, McNett said. Each team member is allowed a spotter on the ice. “Their eyes are on the rest of the fishers and telling our guy in the US what techniques

they’re using,” McNett said, adding that it’s important for fishers to swallow their pride and listen to the spotter when given direction on when to relocate. “Sometimes you can get all the countries on a single school of fish and it will just be who can catch the most.” Team USA has competed in the world championship each year since 2009, taking home first place in U.S. waters in 2010 in Rhinelander, Wis., and fourth place last year in Wausau, Wis. Preparation for the event begins roughly a year in advance, when between 50 and 60 anglers compete in open trials to make the U.S. team. This year’s trials will be held March 14 to 16 in Rhinelander. “It gives the guys who make the team an opportunity to do their fundraising and to tell their bosses that they need the time off,” McNett said. For McNett, the vice chairman of the United States Freshwater Fishing Federation, the most exciting thing about ice fishing is not competing or coaching but hosting demonstration events for children and growing the sport, he said. While he hopes to one day see ice fishing in the Winter Olympics, McNett acknowledged that there are hurdles. “The hardest part about it is you’re dealing with an animal,” he said.

mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – For Healthy Lombard founder Jay Wojcik, the growth the nonprofit foundation has experienced in the past five years is extremely encouraging. “I’m so blessed and happy that people see that this is a valuable organization and want to be a part of it,” Wojcik said. Healthy Lombard will host its annual Fitness February Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 in the center court at Yorktown Shopping Center in Lombard. There will be 26 unique tables – up from 18 last year – and each one will be interactive, Wojcik explained. “People mean well, [but] watching last year, it was a lot of grab-and-go,” she said. “If they can come to the tables and do something, they’ll remember the activities they did and go away with some new information that they didn’t have before.”

arts from Sky Centers in Lombard. Wojcik, formerly a dancer, first grade teacher and director of communication at Lombard Elementary District 44, stressed the importance of physical fitness and said when she was teaching, it was rare to see a child having a hard

time breathing or moving. “We’re looking at kids [now] and wondering why they’re having problems with diabetes,” she said. “We need to get kids moving and get them to text a little less and move their feet a little more.” Wojcik founded Healthy Lombard in 2009 along with Lombard’s former village president, the late William Mueller. Using a “AAA” approach, the village-wide initiative began with building awareness, the first “A,” about childhood obesity and healthy living, Wojcik said. From there, the foundation

turned to parts two and three – activities and achievements. Activities include the February fair and the G.Y.M. (Get Yourself Moving) Bags, a program for all second-graders in Lombard intended to promote 60-minutes of exercise a day on weekends. “We’re honoring people, and now we’re honoring organizations that have made a difference in the people that work for them,” Wojcik said. Moving forward, the foundation’s goal is to promote expansion in other municipalities across DuPage County, Wojcik said. Addison, Bensenville, Elmhurst and Villa Park are among the towns where individuals have expressed interest in starting their own health foundation, Wojcik said. “Our mission [now] is to be a template for other towns,” Wojcik said. “We’re more than happy to share our successes and failures. Pretty soon, we’ll have most of DuPage County doing their own thing, which is great.”

In closing, a reminder: The York Township Senior Center will be scheduling identity theft prevention seminars in the near future under the auspices of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office Senior Services Unit. In the meantime, here’s a tip: If you do get a suspicious phone call, immediately ask for a callback number. That will usually result in a hang-up by the scam artist. Alert: Sidewalks are awful I would like to comment on the sidewalks south of 55th Street in Westmont. There have been other terrible years in the past, but this year, it’s just awful. The people and the businesses do not clean the sidewalks and there’s a lot of foot traffic. People are walking in the street and they’re riding bikes in the street and I was wondering if something couldn’t be done to alert village of Westmont of the problem of the sidewalk south of 55th Street in Westmont.

Allow only 1 car on street Regarding the parking problem in Brookfield, I think maybe the village should institute one car per family to be allowed to park on the street and if you have two, three, four cars, then you need to put them in the garages or someplace else because there is limited parking. Also, why don’t people park their cars in front of their homes instead of in front of somebody else’s. Everyone has one designated parking spot in front of their home. They should park their car in front of their home.

I just read in Suburban Life this week about the Downers Grove disposal program for drugs, which is wonderful. I just want people to be aware of the fact that, and I am a Downers Grove residence, for years at the Lisle police station, you’ve been able to walk in and put your drugs in a box without making an appointment and sometimes that may be more convenient. So anyhow, I just want everybody to know about it. I think it’s wonderful Downers Grove is finally offering this program. But I think it would be easier for a lot of people if they don’t have to make an appointment, they can just drop their drugs off, which I’ve been doing for years.

Skepticism toward Lemont sports complex I am becoming more skeptical as events occur surrounding the proposed Lemont Sports Complex. Our elected officials have circumvented a public vote on the project with their plan to pledge taxes, other than property taxes, and taking out loans to finance the project. If the complex fails, such as the one in Bridgeview, the residents could be faced with increased property taxes to pay the debt. Mission trip provides health care in Honduras By MATTHEW PIECHALAK mpiechalak@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – For Tom Brauer, co-leader of a group from Peace Lutheran Church that recently returned from a mission trip to Honduras, traveling to impoverished areas to provide healthcare is an impactful experience that often leads to “divine appointments.” A divine appointment is an experience in which an individual relates directly to another human being and is able to offer help or advice, said Brauer, of Wheaton. “It’s a pretty amazing thing when these people that live 2,200 miles apart do share common experiences in life and can help one another,” Brauer said. The Lombard church sent about 50 people to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, last month as part of World Gospel Outreach, a nonprofit organization that serves the poor in Tegucigalpa and “seeks to physically and spiritually touch them with the love of Jesus Christ,” according to the organization’s website. Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras, with a population of 1.12 million. “We set up medical clinics in different churches around the city and provide medical help for them,” said Brauer, who has been on 18 trips in the past 14 years. During the recent trip, the volunteers saw 5,326 patients, Brauer said. Mary Steinbach of Elm-

hurst has attended 12 trips to Honduras through World Gospel Outreach including the most recent trip. Bringing medical, dental and optical aid to the Honduran people is one goal for the mission trips, she said. The group also provides concrete floors for families living in the dirt and offers to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those interested, Steinbach said. “I’m thankful for the many comforts I’ve come home to, and I have a greater appreciation for my fellow team members as we grew closer through the week,” she said. Peace Lutheran Church Pastor Marty Hufford, who has been on two trips, said it’s an incredible way to serve those less fortunate. “People will walk for hours to go to one of the stations because they have no health care and they have needs,” Hufford said. The overall mission of the trips, as written in scripture, is to serve those in need, Hufford said. “Spiritually, we want to think of Matthew 25,” Hufford said. “We want to take that very seriously here in our local community and around the world.”

ELMHURST – They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but Dorothy Asher took explicit care to look for other gem stones when cultivating the Lizzadro Museum’s current “Modern Designer Jewelry from the Smithsonian” exhibit. “I looked for things that were showy,” Asher said. She avoided the “big four” as she called them, namely diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires in general. Instead, she looked for large pieces with colorful gems through more than 100 works available from the Smithsonian Gem Collection. “The museum is a Smithsonian affiliate, so we are able to work closely with the curators,” Asher said. After about six months, she’d assembled a collection of 11 designer pieces that focused on American gem stones. A few diamonds and emeralds made their way into the exhibit next to an oversized turquoise Najavo bracelet and a pearl ring. “There’s a big departure from just the jewelry store jewelry,” Asher said. A fire truck was trying to drive down my street the other day to shovel paths to the hydrants, and they couldn’t get through at the south end of the block, so they had to back it up to get out. On Ogden Avenue in Brookfield, someone had been plowing the sidewalks for a while, and I was so grateful, but it seems like they just gave up about three snowfalls ago. The only place to walk now is in the streets or alleys, since only a few of the businesses bother to shovel.

Three golden South Sea cultured pearls and two white Akoya cultured pearls are set in hand-fabricated Elektra Gold, transitioning from 24-karat yellow gold to white gold. Asher explained not only are the pieces beautiful, but they show a wide variety. Another of her favorites is an emerald designed by Julius Cohen around 1965. “If you didn’t know any better, you would say that necklace could be designed and worn today,” Asher said. Geologist Sara Kurth’s favorite piece is called “Nautilus” and resembles the spiral shape of a sea shell. “It just shows you what else can be done with stone,” Kurth said. Raised in Glen Ellyn, Kurth remembers visiting the museum as a child. In fifth grade, she decided to be a scientist, but it wasn’t un-

til college that she found her passion for geology. “I think it’s modern,” Kurth said about the jewelry exhibit in comparison to some of the other museum works. Grandaughter of the museum’s executive director, Asher grew up surrounded by stones. Her grandfather John Lizzadro, an avid lapidary hobbyist and collector, opened the museum in 1972. Today, Asher and Lizzadro are the most involved family members, and while Asher had an interest in lapidary art from a young age, she didn’t start out as the museum director she is today. “I’m here because I love the creativity and the job,” said Asher, a gemologist. In addition to the Smithsonian jewelry exhibit, the Lizzadro will hold an earring workshop Saturday for those 16 and older. Asher explained members of the West Suburban Lapidary Club lead jewelry workshops every few months. During this class, participants will create three pairs of earrings. “I hope that people in Elmhurst take advantage of the cultural institution we have here,” Asher said. “It’s right in their backyard.”

‘Doubtful Abbey’ marks 10 years of mystery theatre By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com Most people wouldn’t expect a cozy community like Elmhurst to be the site of heinous crimes, but every year for the last decade, someone is murdered right around this time of year. The GreenMan Theatre Troupe’s annual mystery dinner theatre production is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this year with a birthday party for Dowager Duchess, Lady Dolores Fussworthy. “It’s very immediate theatre,” said Carolyn Thomas-Davidoff, director and writer of “Doubtful Abbey: Murder and Mayhem at Fussworthy Masion.” Thomas-Davidoff worked on the lighting for the troupe’s very first mystery dinner, “The Boardwalk Melody Hour Murders,” in 2004 and has been involved ever since. “When we started, we didn’t know if we were going to be able to continue,” said David Soria, the theatre’s artistic director. The first mystery dinner was meant to be a one-time fundraiser to get the new community theatre off the ground, but the audience demanded more. The annual production still functions as a fundraiser, which Soria said is essential to GreenMan. Because the annual event is a fundraiser, an original script saves the theatre money on royalties, but it’s also exciting for cast members like Ashley Thompson of Roselle. In her second production with GreenMan, Thompson said her favorite part about the troupe is the closeness of the cast and crew. “I see these great friendships and relationships being made,” said Soria, who met his wife, Katie, a member of the Doubtful Abbey cast, at a past show. Part of community theatre’s appeal, for many involved, is the amount of behind-thescenes work that goes into each performance. “They have to turn their lives upside down to be able to

Shazad Mehta works at his family business, Mehta Motors, in Elmhurst, but lives in Chicago. Everyone’s circumstances are different, but everyone gives many hours to each production. “I’ve always kind of been the ham of the family,” said Mehta, an Elmhurst native who will be performing in his ninth GreenMan production this season. Thomas-Davidoff remembers Mehta’s first audition just before she was ready to call it quits after a couple of hours without a standout performance. “To me, the play just took off at that point,” she said of Mehta’s audition. The casting call makes all the differencem said Thomas-Davidoff. The Western Springs teacher spends most of her summer writing or co-writing the murder mysteries, but during her winter break she rewrites the script after meeting the cast. Once, she even created an entirely new character for an actress who came to a casting call. As much as she enjoys writing the script, Thomas-Davidoff also likes how the dinner theatre setting gives the cast the opportunity to involve the audience. mingles with the audience during a cocktail hour, and during the performance, characters often make their way between tables and involve audience members in the show. “You can imagine that there’s some people who just want to watch the play, and then there are other people who are eager to have the cast members approach them,” Thomas-Davidoff said. Whether audience members want to observe or get into the act, for first-time GreenMan cast member Kitty Mortland of Chicago, the accessibility of community theatre is what makes it special. “We’re all here enjoying an evening of art together,” Mortland said.

Thai Pot stirs affection for traditional cuisine DOWNERS GROVE – Thai fare has become more commonplace over the years, and, like many other adopted cuisines, often more Americanized. Breading, cream, sugary sauces and less traditional spices frequently are incorporated. Thai Pot seems to resist that temptation, offering authentic flavors and food, to good result. During my first visit to the restaurant, I stopped by for lunch. Tucked into a strip mall in Downers Grove, the storefront eatery has a bright, appealingly decorated interior. The full menu is not available midday, when the restaurant focuses on a selection of weekday lunch specials, which are fairly diverse and very well priced. For just under $8, you get soup, the appetizer of the day and a well-portioned entree. The meal started with a simple yet delicious chicken and jasmine rice soup. It reminded me of my mom’s best chicken noodle, but the jasmine and a smattering of other Thai spices gave it an extra layer of savory that really set it apart. All the components were cooked well, and the broth had an almost buttery texture. The aromatic fish sauce and spices in the red curry with tofu, which usually are muted by lots of coconut sauce, wafted my way as the server approached the table. The emphasis was on the spicy chili sauce in the curry, a dish overflowing with veggies and tofu. The tofu itself melted in my

mouth. It was boiled, not fried, giving it an eggy texture. After the satisfying lunch, I was curious to check out the full menu, and followed up another day with a dinner visit. I started with an order of Shrimp Cigars – admittedly chosen because of the great name. They were big plump shrimp, tail-on, alongside Thai basil and a bit of onion, all wrapped and fried in a wonton wrapper. The visual was a great one, and the presentation allowed the shrimp to stay the star. My entree of spicy basil leaves with chicken had a great blend of flavors, particularly the sauce. It contained just enough basil to add a nice punch. I would have liked even more of the gravy, simply because it was so good. Thai Pot’s greatest strength is its commitment to authenticity. Thai is one of my favorite cuisines – I love the Americanized versions just as much as I love the ones straight from the recipes of Thai grandmothers – and Thai Pot managed to throw in a couple flavors I hadn’t experienced before. Diners who would like to push their boundaries a bit, or those who already relish the more traditional flavors, will want to find out what’s cooking at Thai Pot.

Willowbrook’s Rowland, Kroeger set for sectional Warrior duo look for state berths By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com LOMBARD – The Glenbard East regional was tough at just about every weight class, and the only Willowbrook wrestlers to survive were Matt Rowland and Jake Kroeger. Those two will compete at the Leyden Sectional this weekend with the hopes of qualifying for state. Both Rowland and Kroeger made the championship match at their respective weight classes before losing to wrestlers from Oak Park-River Forest, the favorite to win the state title this season. Rowland, a sophomore, returns to a sectional after going 1-2 at that stage last year. Kroeger is looking for his second state appearance. “We had kind of a rough finish this year,” Willowbrook coach Bryan Murphy said. “We were injury prone. As long as we get these two guys to state and next week focus on trying to get them to place [at state], that’s a pretty good year.” Rowland is 39-3 at 152 pounds and only lost 5-4 to OPRF’s Matthew Rundell in the final. St. Charles East’s Keone Derain is another talented wrestler at 152 in the sectional field, but Murphy thinks Rowland should be able to get through to state for the first time. “Matt’s doing real well,” Murphy said. “He lost to three top-ranked kids. He’s got a pretty good sectional, but I think he should be back in the finals against Rundell from Oak Park. “It gives us a good shot at getting him a couple championship shots in the next couple years.” Kroeger made state as a sophomore and is hoping to

Sophomores Andrew Verr (113 pounds) and Elijah Rochelle (170) and junior Christian Chavez (220) also came up one win short of advancing to the sectional. “Andrew Verr we thought we’d get out at 113,” Murphy said. “He kind of had a flat match in the semis.” Rochelle entered the regional seeded fourth and, according to Murphy, was going to have to pull off a significant upset to get into the top three. What does it say about the state of the program that York has had such a great run in recent years? I think this season we’ve had fantastic chemistry. Everyone is willing to step up. No one is trying to steal the show. We don’t care who does well or who does what. We just want to win.

Does it change your perspective at all to hear that York has been playing since 1920? It’s really cool. It’s something that I’m proud of. I’m proud of all these teams that I’ve been on. We’ve definitely been on a good stretch since I’ve been here. I’ve been fortunate to play with many, many great players, a couple playing Division I in Will Sullivan and David Cohn.

Perhaps you’ve heard this classic Valentine’s Day poem, and maybe you’ve even read it to someone you love. This Valentine’s Day, work on making your own version of the poem. It can be funny, silly or sincere. Just have fun with it. Start out with “Roses are red” as the irst line. This sets up the poem for your readers so they know to expect your own version of this classic form. Write four lines. Four lines is the common form this poem uses, so stick to that. Keep it short and silly! Part of the charm of this form is that it is short, sweet and to the point. Each line should have between four to six syllables — use seven only if you have to. be creative. The classic form uses a color on the second line, but you don’t have to. Instead of a color, you can use another descriptive word on that line — sight, sound, taste and feeling all work in place of a color. Rhyme it. Rhyming this poem keeps it feeling light, fresh and musical. Traditionally, you should use words that sound the same at the end of the second and fourth line of the poem (“blue” rhymes with “you” in the original). You can also rhyme lines three and four.
