Highway Department eyes more than $8 million in road, bridge work in 2019 SHAW MEDIA The LaSalle County Highway Department plans to make $5.8 million in repairs to approximately 63.8 miles of roadway in 2019. In addition, $2.8 million is budgeted for bridge, culvert and draining projects across the county. The largest project is $3.1 million to widen and resurface County Highway 15, north of Marseilles, from Interstate 80 to Route 71. The project also includes earthwork and curve relocation. For this project, $2.52 million will come from federal funds and $630,000 from the county.

County Highway 5, also known as Richards Road, will get safety improvements at its intersection with Route 23, north of Streator. This project is expected to cost $236,250, but $189,000 will come from federal funds. Safety improvements also will take place at the intersection of County Highway 33 and 43, north of Utica. The project is $560,350, with $448,280 coming from federal funds. LaSalle and Kendall counties will split costs of bridge repairs at Millington Bridge, which carries County Highway 31 over the Fox River. LaSalle County will handle $760,680 of the bill, but receive 80 percent

funding from the Surface Transportation Program. The Oakley Avenue Bridge, west of Streator, which carries County Highway 64 over the Vermilion River, is expected to receive $266,000 — $200,000 in construction costs and $66,000 in engineering — in bridge repair to the west abutment. Engineering for bridge replacement at the Sandy Ford Bridge will continue with an estimated cost of $175,000. The bridge is close to the 200-acre Sandy Ford Conservation Area, which includes a forest, creeks, prairies and sandstone cliffs.

Local cemetery group seeks donations Benefactor will match them through the end of the year BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com TONICA — A benefactor, Don Fike, president of the Donald E. Fike Family Foundation, has announced his support for raising money for the Tonica Cemetery Association as it continues maintenance projects. Fike, who formed his foundation to help charitable organizations meet their goals and objectives, has pledged to match any donations made through the end of the year. Fike said he’s delighted to be able to contribute to this worthwhile project in the town in which he grew up. He hopes more residents will join the efforts to make cemetery preservation a high priority for their village. Challenges faced by the cemetery group are made more difficult by the high level of erosion caused by Bailey Creek, bordered on both sides by Tonica’s historic cemeteries Tonica Cemetery Association President Bob Folty said progress has been made to preserve the area. Folty said the cemetery group is on track with new roads, and that they’ve been busy leveling markers and making strides in removing dead brush and trees.

Approximately six years ago, the group noticed the creek’s waters were washing away large amounts of the land bordering the Brookside and Fairview cemeteries. Folty has said there’s far more water flowing than he remembers in the past and believes the problem could be related to an increase of

agricultural drainage tiles. Improvements to shore up a nearby bridge that was being damaged by erosion could also possibly be aggravating the problem. During heavy rains, the creek rises several feet and its churning route can erode large chunks of soil on both sides. On the Fairfield side, entire trees have shifted, and many others lean precariously over the embankment. More than a year ago, the creek was about 25 feet from the cemetery grounds. In Brookside Cemetery, where there are Civil War-era graves, the situation at the banks is even more critical because it’s only about 10 feet from the nearest grave to the tree line.
