um-duty truck that served the department well for the past 30 years. “It’s been a great truck for us and it’s done it’s job well, but it’s time,” Rick Turri, public information and training officer for the Tonica department, said. The new 330-horsepower truck is a $227,000 Ford F550 from Pierce Manufacturing located in Bradenton, Fla.
It will help Tonica’s first responders safely get to emergency scenes with four-wheel drive, and once there, its high-visibility “Chrome yellow” paint will help alert others to its presence. The Tonica Volunteer Fire Department switched in 1980 from having its vehicles in the traditional red to yellow, which is more noticeable and therefore safer.

• RESCUE TRUCK “It’s more stable, has a lower profile, and features better scene lighting with the latest in LED lighting and other technology,” Turri said. As well as the standard LED lighting, the new truck also features high-intensity, cab-operated spot-
rescue truck to possibly last the department another 30 years, but there’s plenty of work remaining before it sees its first official duty. “First, we need to transfer all the gear from the older truck, and then everyone will have to complete their training on it,” Turri said. It will also have a light-duty winch and a backup camera installed prior to its entry into service.
Turri couldn’t definitively say how long the department had saved before buying the truck, but quickly added, “We’re always saving.” The department’s oldest vehicles are now the 1999 ambulance and its 2001 pumper. The department is funded without property taxation and operates through the generous donations from those within the community and its outlying protection areas.

Water bill due dates changed to last Friday of the month BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com LOSTANT — Starting in July, Lostant water bills will be due on the last Friday of each month. The change in due date comes as the local bank changes its operating hours. “We are trying to think long-term, because people are so used to the due date being the last day of the month, or the last Saturday of the month,” said Dave Mertes as he opened the discussion. “Whatever we decide, I’d like to make it kind of universal.” The idea was floated that the date could be moved to the 20th, in line with other communities, but was ultimately decided against. The
board considered what might be easiest for residents to remember as their accustomed time became unavailable. In continued water-related news, Lostant’s plans for a new water tower will reach another milestone on June 25 with the opening of the bids.
Specialized officer being considered Lostant is considering the possibility of adding a specialized ordinance enforcement officer to its force. The specialized enforcer would simplify ordinance enforcement and remove the potential strain of court dates from the police officers. “I would like to find a retired county or state policeman,” Village President Jack Immel said of
the individual who would be charged with handing out and dealing with ordinance violations, indicating that the best candidate would already have some measure of experience. Currently, enforcement of ordinances can be a difficult question for the village. Different officers might show up separately to deal with a violation not knowing the other had already done so, and the possibility of the charge going to court could be tough on their schedules. “Our police officers, this is their second job, and they can’t take off to go to court,” Immel said. The village was not able to act upon the idea this month, but will return to the possibility. In other news, John Rothchild is set to take the vacant board position next month.
TRI-COUNTY DRUG ENFORCEMENT NARCOTICS TEAM (TRI-DENT) Cocaine arrests At 4:41 p.m. on June 3, the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team (Tri-DENT) task force, assisted by detectives and officers from the Ottawa Police Department, conducted a buy/ bust operation at 3000 Fairfield Lane in Ottawa. During the operation, Tri-DENT agents
conducted a controlled purchase of cocaine from Dale R. McInerney Jr., 41, of 768 Fillebrowne in Marseilles, and Ryan J. Knott, 33, of 1943 Columbus St. in Ottawa. During the controlled purchase, McInerney delivered approximately 27 grams of cocaine to Tri-DENT agents and Knott assisted. An additional

Following the delivery, McInerney and Knott were taken into custody and transported to the LaSalle County Jail for further investigation. Following the investigation, both were charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (cocaine), a Class
X felony, and both are being held at the jail awaiting a felony bond hearing. All subjects are innocent until proved guilty. Tri-DENT consists of the LaSalle, Streator, Princeton, Oglesby and Mendota Police Departments, along with the LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam County Sheriff’s Offices.

IVCC scholarship established in honor of Clarence Sapienza

OGLESBY — An elementary education scholarship has been established with the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation in memory of longtime educator and World War II veteran Clarence Sapienza of Peru. The annual scholarship was set up by Sapienza’s widow, Myrle, and their son, Mike, and his wife, Jackie, of Peru. It will award $1,000 to a full-time elementary education major who has graduated from LaSalle-Peru (L-P) Township High School, St. Bede Academy or Putnam County High School. Sapienza died April 14 at age 99. A graduate of L-P, he earned a teacher’s certificate from LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College in 1940 and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Bradley University. He was a teacher, principal and retired as superintendent of Oglesby Public Schools. Before beginning his teaching career at Sprinkleburg School, a one-room schoolhouse in Putnam County, Sapienza served in World War II for the U.S. Eighth Army Air Corps as a belly gunner on a B-17 bomber. “It is a privilege to work with the Sapienzas to honor Clarence’s remarkable life,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran. “Clarence represented the ‘Greatest Generation’ – the men and women who lived through the Depression, fought so bravely in World War II and went on to live meaningful lives.” The scholarship will be awarded for the first time at the Aug. 29 scholarship reception in IVCC’s gymnasium. There, the recipient may have an opportunity to meet Myrle, who was married to Clarence for 76 years.
