Tonica’s new Dollar General has wide variety of goods at discount prices

They typically need to travel to a larger community, or hope the local convenience store has a solution. Since the recent opening of a new Dollar General store, the citizens of Tonica will now be more likely to keep more of their shopping dollars within the village. “When choosing store locations, meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority,” Dollar General public relations representative Mary Kathryn Colbert said in an email interview. “The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice. We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three- to fivemile radius, or 10-minute drive,” Colbert said. “We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration,” she said. The presence of Dollar General has

Seventy percent of Dollar Generals serve communities with populations less than 20,000. “It’s great to have a local place to come and shop,” Tonica Grade School teacher Lauren Thomas said as she purchased a cart full of treats and other items to be enjoyed during her classroom’s end-of-year celebrations. Dollar General sells a wide variety of quality, branded merchandise such as health and beauty products, office and school supplies, home
cleaning supplies, housewares, stationery, seasonal selections, outdoor items, movies, toys, party supplies, pet products, auto and hardware items, and basic clothing. “We also sell an assortment of packaged foods, as well as some refrigerated foods and frozen foods,” Colbert said. Shopping can also be done online by visiting www.dollargeneral.com, and if more than $25 is purchased, Dollar General offers free shipping. The website offers digital coupons, as well. Along with offering customers everyday low prices and discounted merchandise, Dollar General stays involved with the communities it serves through support of their Dollar General Literacy Foundation. This program awards yearly grants to non-profit organizations, schools and libraries within a 20-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center. Since its inception in 1993, the foundation has awarded more than $168 million in grants, which have helped more than 10 million people toward literacy or continued education. OTTAWA — The court proceedings of former Sandwich Mayor Richard A. “Rick” Olson on charges of soliciting sex from a woman he thought was a prostitute has been continued into July. Olson, 66, Sandwich, was charged along with eight other men as the result of a sting operation conducted by the LaSalle County Sheriff ’s office in March. Olson made his first court appearance Friday morning, May 31, where court proceedings were continued to 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 10.
Olson was a longtime police officer who had served as Sandwich’s police chief for 16 years. He was elected mayor in 2013 and was in the middle of his second term when he resigned shortly after charges were made against him. Also charged in the operation was Illinois Valley Community Hospital’s Vice President of Operations and Physician Services James G. Schaefer, 53, of Peru, and a Putnam County public defender Roger C. Bolin, 65, Hennepin. Others charged with solicitation of a sexual act as a result of the operation include Raul Barajas, 40, Peru; Dustin A. Meredith, 29, Streator;
Joseph P. Hanley, 57, Earlville; Wiley M. Sawyer, 18, Waterman; Richard Peradotti, 55, Peru; and Alphonso T. Thompson, 33, Streator. Meredith plead guilty May 31, which resulted in a $500 fine. In addition to the soliciting charge, Bolin was also charged with battery. Schaefer’s case was continued to 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, and Bolin’s case was previously continued to 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 26. The LaSalle County Sheriff ’s Office used a female informant posing as a prostitute for most of the sting operation. Websites were used to set up meetings at hotels in Ottawa and Peru.

STANDARD — Everyone needs a bit of help now and then, but one of the biggest obstacles toward getting that help might simply be a lack of awareness of what assistance is available. To help local residents stay informed about the wide variety of health care and assistive products and services there are, the Putnam County Community Center (PCCC) held its annual Senior Health Fair on May 30. “This event is important because it helps our residents to be aware of how many benefits and services are available to them and they’re often easily overlooked,” PCCC Outreach worker Janice Holst said. The fair hosted booths that included product demonstrations, health information and other help from representatives of the U of I Extension, Social Security, Axline Pharmacy, St. Margaret’s Hospital, Perry Memorial Hospital, Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging, PCCC Outreach, Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living (IVCIL), Caring Friends Alzheimer’s support
because they offer such great help and informational programs about healthy eating,” Nancy Antkowiak of Peru said. A picnic-style lunch and door prizes were also featured attractions. Prizes included gift cards from Hy-Vee and Dollar General, a Sally Sue’s coffee basket, a collection of herbs from the Illinois Valley Herb Guild and a decorative flower pot. Anna Dragoo, of the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging, which serves 10 counties, said she had been asked frequently about their fall prevention and mobility program, which helps seniors learn the dangers of accidental falls and how to best avoid them. “We understand that no one wants to leave the home they’ve been in for most of their lives to go live in a nursing home, and the training we offer can help prevent avoidable falls,” she said. Liz Bedford, of the IVCIL, said age-related hearing loss is common and that help is available through a program that provides free amplified phones to those who qualify. Vanessa Hoffeditz, of the Tri-County Opportunities Council, was there to help with a variety of assistive programs, but reported she had shared the most information about the council’s Foster Grandparent program.

Rollover accident At 6:03 p.m. on May 30, Tonica Fire Rescue was called to a motor vehicle rollover accident on Interstate 39, south of Route 71, at approximately mile marker 51. Emergency personnel found one vehicle upside down and it had rolled over multiple times. The two occupants had been removed from the vehicle before emergency personnel arrived. Oglesby Fire and Ambulance was also called out as Mutual Aid. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were transported to IVCH by Tonica Fire Department Ambulance and Oglesby Ambulance. Emergency personnel also determined there was a semi truck involved in the incident. The semi had only minor damage, and the driver refused transport to
a hospital. The state police investigated the accident and assisted with traffic control. Two-vehicle accident At 5:11 p.m. May 29, the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of East Third Road and North 17th Road. Emergency personnel found two vehicles on their wheels, but off the road and with air bag deployment. Both vehicles had extensive damage, but no extrication was needed. Putnam County EMS was called for mutual aid because of there being two patients with injuries. Both were transported to IVCH. The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office investigated.
PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE Theft At 12:20 p.m. on May 25, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office arrested and charged Justin J. Lyons, 21, of Tonica with theft under $500. Lyons was charged following a
brief investigation into the theft of a stolen road sign from Granville Township. Lyons was released on a notice to appear and given a Putnam County court date.

Stage 212 in LaSalle will offer two children’s theater workshops in June LASALLE — Stage 212 in LaSalle will offer two children’s theater workshops early this summer. “Theatre Basics Workshop,” led by instructor Phil Grant, will meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday, June 17, through Friday, June 21, and is for students entering grades 2-4 in the fall. The workshop covers all the basics of the theater experience and will allow children to dabble in creative drama activities. The cost of the workshop is $60. “Audition Bootcamp” will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m. June 17-21, and is
for students entering grades 5-9 in the fall. Instructor Phil Grant will prepare young actors for what to expect at their next audition, with an emphasis on singing, dancing and acting. Skills learned will apply to any audition, but the workshop will focus on the upcoming “Dear Edwina, Jr.” auditions. The cost of the workshop is $60. Preregistration is required for all workshops. June 14 — Sweet and sour pork with rice, green beans, applesauce, wheat bread with butter. Bread, butter, fruit juice and 2% milk are available with meals. For reservations, call 800-757-4579, 24 hours in advance of the day’s meal. The menu is subject to change. Meals are available to senior citizens 60 plus at no cost, but donations are appreciated. The meal program is partly funded by donations, so they have a suggested donation of $5 per meal. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.

University of Illinois Extension will offer strawberry jam-making class LASALLE — The University of Illinois Extension, serving Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties, will offer “Yes! You CAN: Strawberry Jam Class” from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, June 21, at the Extension’s Education Center and Community Teaching Kitchen, 944 First St. in LaSalle. During class, participants will learn the basics of home canning and safety guidelines, gain hands-on canning experience and take home the
products prepared in class. This class is great for those who are just learning or seasoned preservers. A $10 fee will cover the purchase of supplies. Class size is limited to 12 adults.
