Board considering more road repairs BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com TONICA — Last year, the Tonica Village Board allocated funds to fix up some roads in town, and board members want to do the same this year. “We want to continue on doing improvements to roads,” Village President Kevin Sluder said at Monday night’s village board meeting. Some options, such as Wauponis, were mentioned immediately. Another suggestion was in the subdivision, but that selection entailed more than just fixing the road; preventing its continuous deterioration
is an issue as well. For some of these roads, residents dumping water on the street h a s wo r s e n e d t h e road’s condition. Selections have not yet been made, as the board is considering what streets are most in need and how much the village can allocate toward the project. In other discussion, village engi-
neer Jack Kusek provided an update on the construction projects in town. While the weather might have slowed things down, both Dollar General and Casey’s General Store are coming along, he said. The board considered whether to donate a bit extra to help Republic Services in the recycling business and opted not to do so. Concerns involved an uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of the program, the cost of the wear on town roads, and the reality of paying more than stipulated in the contract. Republic will continue to collect recycling as per the contract.
Labor Day. A fishing permit from the Wetlands Initiative is required, in addition to a state of Illinois Sport Fishing License. Wetlands Initiative permit applications will be available starting May 15 at the

Marquis Energy plant fire contained without injuries Multiple agencies respond to fire call BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com HENNEPIN — A fire call was reported on multiple levels of a building in the south unit of the Marquis Energy ethanol plant about 3:15 p.m. April 10, prompting numerous fire and ambulance units to respond. Hennepin, Granville and Bureau fire departments were the first to respond. The Cedar Point, Standard, Spring Valley, Princeton, Peru, Oglesby and Tonica fire depart-
ments, as well as ambulances from Princeton, Oglesby and Spring Valley, also responded to mutual-aid calls. “The fire is contained, and all personnel are safe and accounted for. There was swift response from our local and surrounding fire departments, and we appreciate their efforts,” Danielle Anderson, director of public relations and political affairs for Marquis Energy, said. Anderson also reported the plant’s north unit continues to run at full capacity. The cause of the fire has yet to be released. The Marquis Energy ethanol plant produces roughly one million gallons of ethanol each day.

Sue Rezin spoke against the graduated income tax proposal (SJRCA 1) during a Senate Executive Committee hearing and issued the following statement: “The graduated income tax proposal puts middle-income families at risk and fails to offer any sort of protection against future tax increases,” Rezin stated.
“The proposed rates that have been floated around may make up the budget deficit for now, but what happens when we continue to increase our spending like we have done year after year? Someone will have to make up that money, and that will more than likely be the middle class. The high income tax rates will gradually creep downward, and no longer will it only be the ‘rich’ paying, it’ll be the middle-class families.”

PERU — Two new obstetrician/ gynecologists, Anna Bida-Dudun, M.D., and Ilan Bornstein, M.D., have joined the clinical staff at the Women’s Health Care Center at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru. Dr. Bida-Dudun came to IVCH from KSB Hospital in Dixon. She is a board-certified OB/GYN who received her medical degree from Michigan State University. TONICA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT March activity report TONICA — At the April meeting of the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD), in the absence of Chief Stremlau, Assistant Chief Bill Gray reported there were eight emergency calls during March. The calls were one field fire and seven ambulance requests. The yearto-date total through March is 37. EMS training was a joint session held with the Lostant Ambulance service. The training topic covered emergency care of special needs patients. Deputy Chief of Training Rick Turri noted that during March, members participated in multiple trainings that were as follows: • Two officers and five members participated in the review and operation of apparatus and equipment. • Five firefighters completed National Incident Management System train-
ing modules consisting of NIMS100 Introduction to Incident Command, NIMS 700 Introduction to Incident Management System, NIMS 200 I/C Initial Action Incidents and NIMS 800 Introduction to the National Response System. • Lt. Dan Francisco completed the telecommunicator emergency response task force training. • Other training included 33 members completing the annual hazardous materials awareness training; 10 members participating in hose, nozzle and fire attack training; 11 members participating in ropes, knots and rigging training; and 12 members completed various rope rescue evolutions. Members also participated in building construction training and the use of high-pressure rescue air bags. Turri attended an Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) lead training in Granville
covering fire ground communications. He also attended training in Utica that covered the Naplate tornado and how various agencies worked together while providing short- and long-term resources. The directors, chief officers and treasurer conducted a financial review of 2018 activity and strategic planning for 2019. A new standard operating guideline pertaining to the labeling of fire hose was presented to the membership for review. Gray noted repairs were to be made to the standby generator at the station. The unit was damaged during the recent snowstorms. He also noted he’s waiting for the return of bids to replace the west side rain gutters damaged by the heavy snowstorm. Other maintenance items included the servicing of SCBA regu-
lators and masks, the testing of the SCBA air tanks, and the repair of a spotlight on Pumper-1714. The annual SCBA mask fit testing for all structural firefighters was completed with the help of the Peru Fire Department. New 3-inch and 2.5-inch hoses have been received. After service testing, the hoses will replace some of the existing fire hoses that are more than 26 years old. Treasurer Sue Huss reported numerous donations are being received from citizens in the rural area who are provided fire and ambulance services by the TVFD. These donations support the department operations and allow it to provide emergency services without property taxation. Mary Kay Keutzer reported the TVFD drawdown tickets are available for the June 8 TVFD fundraiser.

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College recently held its academic awards ceremony. Honored as Thomas J. McCormack Scholars for 2019 were Nicholas Bollis, Lauren Giordano, Nicolas Martinez and Shay Scheri of Peru; Shane Peek of Rutland; Morgan Phillips of Lostant; Bryar Lindenmeyer of Mendota; and Summer Hoagland-Abernathy, Mason Kannel and Hannah Miskel of Ottawa. Considered IVCC’s most prestigious academic award, McCormack
scholars maintain a minimum 3.75 grade point average in at least 14 credits over three consecutive semesters. Area students maintaining a grade point average of 3.25 or higher for three consecutive semesters of fulltime enrollment were Morgan Phillips, Michael Stoens and Lidia Templeton of Lostant, and Matthew Blackowski and Rachel Huska of Tonica. Rachel Maggio was recognized for maintaining a 3.25 GPA or higher for two consecutive semesters.
