Voters reject public safety sales tax Vote tallies listed for Tonica, Lostant BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com TONICA — Several issues were at stake for Tonica and Lostant area residents when they cast their votes in the April 2 Consolidated Election. County voters decided not to implement a .25 percent public safety sales tax to help meet the increased expenses of county offices such as the state’s attorney, coroner and sheriff. There were 10,842 votes against the proposition, or 70.12 percent, and 4,620 votes, or 29.88 percent, in favor of the increase. Voter turnout was low at 22.95 percent countywide. Of LaSalle County’s 72,011 registered voters, only 16,525 turned out to vote. Locally, Chris Dose and Andrew Forrest ran for four-year terms on the Lostant Village Board. Forrest received 30 votes, or 51.72 percent, and Dose had 28 votes, or 48.28 percent. The village of Tonica had three
candidates running for three fouryear terms on its board of trustees. The candidates were Dave Wiesbrock, Bob Folty and Mike Supan Jr. Supan received 72 votes, or 36.36 percent, Folty received 64 votes, or 32.32 percent, and Wiesbrock had 62 votes, or 31.31 percent. The village of Tonica also had two candidates running for three unexpired two-year terms on its board of trustees. Todd Anderson received 78 votes, or 57.78 percent, and Tom Goskusky got 57 votes, or 42.22 percent. The Tonica Grade School District had three candidates running for three four-year seats on its board. Candidates were Julie L. Goff Rietgraf Zimmer, Chad E. Lambert and Allen Leffelman. Lambert received the most votes with 153, or 35.75 percent. Leffelman had 144 votes, or 33.64 percent, and Zimmer received 131
votes, or 30.61 percent. The LaSalle-Peru Township High School District Board of Education had one candidate running for an unexpired two-year term and four candidates running for three fouryear terms. On the basis of existing board membership, at least one member was to be elected from the county’s unincorporated area. Robert (Bob) Morrison ran for the two-year term, and Gregory (Greg) Sarver, Sally A. Hocking Taliani, Tony Sparks and Wayne Temple, the only candidate from an unincorporated area, ran for the four-year terms. Morrison received 3,691 votes or 90.16 percent. Write-in candidates were chosen by 403 voters or 9.84 percent. For the four-year terms, Sarver received 3,805 votes, or 30.68 percent; Taliani received 3,475 votes, or 28.02 percent; Sparks received 2,749 votes or 22.16 percent; and Temple received 2,375 votes, or 19.15 percent. Running for the two seats on the IVCC District Board of Trustees, which are six-year terms, were candidates Jane E. Goetz and Amy Sipovic-Boyles. Goetz had 10,546 votes, or 53.83 percent, and Sipovic-Boyles received 9,045 votes, or 46.17 percent.

Fitness upgrades being planned for park Ladies League offers proposal to add fitness equipment or trail BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com LOSTANT — While plans are not yet cemented, the park in Lostant could receive a fitness trail or equipment. The proposal was presented to the Lostant Village Board on Monday by Doneida Larsen of the Lostant Ladies League, who said the plans had not been entirely drawn up yet. However, Larsen described two options, one which involves only the addition of fitness apparatus around the park, and another which also includes a walking trail upon which these structures could be sit-
uated. She expects the first option is the more likely. O f t h e s t r u c t u re s, L a r s e n described the possibility as “some made from timber, some from metal — all professionally made, of course.” While placements have not been decided upon, Larsen indicated the structures would not dominate the park. “We still want to use the park for things. We don’t want to fill up all the space,” she said. Before final decisions can proceed, the village has opted to look into whether the proposal could present liability issues, but the idea was well received by the board.
Water meter upgrades Lostant leaders are looking to upgrade the village’s aging water meters, which have reached the

point of obsolescence. New meters might be rolled out for the entire village. The Ger man-made radio-read meter can be read from a distance using Android devices, which would allow the entire village to be read and numbers input in a hassle-free short period of time, without the potential for transposition errors. As of Monday’s meeting, the village had in its possession only one remaining obsolete meter, and that meter was already spoken for. In other discussion, the village board is short a board member. Anybody interested in being appointed to the position is encouraged to contact Village President Jack Immel or any current board member. There is a pile of dirt at the south end of Main Street. Immel encouraged anybody who wants some to pick some up: “Free dirt, go get it!”

Event exceeded $25,000 goal before it even began BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com OGLESBY — In three years, the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation has raised more than $75,000 through its Giving Day events to help students achieve their academic goals. The third annual Giving Day event, held April 3, exceeded its $25,000 goal before the spirited events in the gymnasium even began. “These funds will be used to provide scholarships to well-deserving students to help them complete their education,” Fran Brolley, IVCC’s director of Community Relations and Development, said. Funds are raised through a series of lighthearted competitions, raffles and social media interaction. Included in the day were a bake sale; a raffle for two tickets to a perfor mance of “Hamilton” in Chicago, sponsored by IVCC; and a raffle for two tickets to a White Sox game, sponsored by NRG Media. Past competitions have included challenges such as staff members seeing who could make the most free throws or do the most pushups. But, this year organizers changed the lineup to allow for more participation from both students and staff. However, one aspect that didn’t change was the popular “Slime Challenge.” Each year the “winner” of this challenge is the staff member who collects the most monetary donations prior to the event. They are then “slimed” by a raffle winner who entered to be the “slimer.” The IVCC Chem Club creates the

In this challenge, six teams of five competed in a relay race with a series of events. Teams included staff and a variety of members from the college’s athletic teams. “We’re here to celebrate everything that makes IVCC great,” Janice Corrigan, IVCC Foundation assistant, said. The first stage was a race with a balloon held between the legs of the competitors who then had to sit on and pop the balloon. Following that, the next team member had to quickly rotate through a large stack of colored cups, or the “Stack Attack,” until reaching the sole cup of a different color.

The third event was the “Chuckin’ Chick’n,” in which teams had to successfully toss two rubber chickens into a distant bucket. The fourth stage, the “Pantyhose Pushover,”
required placing a stocking with a tennis ball in the end over their heads and attempting to knock over a bottle of water. The final stage required competitors to don safety glasses and mittens before quickly spinning around five times while leaned over with their forehead on a yardstick. They then had to stay leaned over while rolling a basketball through a series of cones before finally shooting a basket while wearing the bulky mittens. Hometown National Bank was a major sponsor of the day, and Brolley said the bank has donated $3,000 each year toward the event. Following the competitions, those in attendance were invited to enjoy the pizza provided by Marchelloni’s, the water provided by Pepsi and the popcorn made by the IVCC Athletic Department. “We’re excited we’ve found a way to make giving fun. This event seems to grow and get better every year. All the donations, no matter how much they are, add up to help us provide access to higher education for our students,” Brolley said.

Lostant Grade School students compete in bridge building contest LOSTANT — Lostant fifth- through eighth-grade science students competed in the bridge building contest at Dimmick school. The classes have been working for the last several weeks to design and build a balsa wood bridge. The bridges had to be between 15 and 18 inches long, less than 5 inches tall and less than 4 inches wide. The heaviest Lostant bridge to compete weighed 30 grams and the lightest weighed 16 grams. At the competition, weight was applied to each bridge to test its strength and endurance. Lostant competed against 11 other schools with a total of 96 teams. “We are proud to announce that the team of Makenzie Chambers, Dylan Busch, Brayden Scurti, Paityn Skinner and Lucas Weisbrock placed fourth out of the 96 teams,” said Lostant science teacher Tricia Haynes. “This led Lostant to a second-place school finish for the day. Photo contributed I am extremely proud of their hard work and dedication to this project. Lostant’s fifth- through eighth-grade science students recently competed against 11 other schools and a total of 96 other teams in a Fantastic job!” bridge building contest at Dimmick School. ‘Hello, Dolly’ casting call announced LASALLE — Directors Neal Phelps and Phil Grant announced auditions for Stage 212’s summer production of “Hello, Dolly” will be held at the theater, 700 First St. in LaSalle, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, and 9 a.m. Saturday, April 27. Callbacks will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27. Five women and four men will be cast in a variety of lead and supporting roles. They’ll also be casting a dancing ensemble and chorus, both of which will fill additional supporting roles. Those auditioning should prepare up to 30 seconds of a classic musical theater song to sing a cappella. Those
auditioning for the dance ensemble should wear appropriate clothing and dance shoes/laced sneakers. There will also be readings from the script for those interested in larger roles. These materials will be released prior to auditions. Those interested should come prepared with a list of their entire summer availability/conflicts. Auditions are open to anyone entering their freshmen year of high school or older, regardless of prior theatrical experience. and festivals. She is active in Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Choir and Trinity Lutheran Chimes Choir. She enjoys drawing, composing and listening to music, reading, and spending time with family and friends. • Bobby Bradish, the son of Bob and Michelle Bradish, has been playing the trumpet for nine years, starting at McKinley Elementary School in Ottawa. He currently attends Ottawa Township High School. He has studied for four years under the former OTHS music secretary, Barb Kinzer. He has been the trumpet section leader for the past three years at OTHS and the principal trumpet in the IVYSO for both years he participated. Additionally, he has subbed for third trumpet in the IVSO for multiple concerts. This year has been particularly successful for Bradish, as he made the ILMEA Orchestra, was selected for the All-State Orchestra, won the “Outstanding Musician” award at the national jazz contest, Jazz in the Meadows, won his second and third IHSA State Music Contest “Best of Day” Performance awards, and perfect scores for his “Hindemith Sonata 1” and trumpet quartet. Looking forward, he will attend Illinois State University, where he plans to major in actuarial science and participate in the University Band and Pep Band. LASALLE — The Illinois Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform its spring concert at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in Matthiessen Auditorium at LaSalle-Peru High School. The spring concert features a wide array of musical genres. Classics such as Dvorák’s “New World Symphony” stand alongside Howard Shore’s epic movie music from “Lord of the Rings” and theatrics are in full swing with “Carmen” by Bizet. The spring concert also features two concerto competition winners, Bobby Bradish and Abigail Meyers. Each year, students can compete for a chance to solo with the orchestra. This year, two winners were selected to showcase their talents: • Abigail Meyers, 18, is an avid violinist, and is home educated. She has been playing violin since January of 2010. Past instructors include Emily Sobaki, Aki Tanaka and Constance Deal, and she is now studying with Jane Hoffmire. She has played with the Illinois Valley Youth Symphony for six years, serving as concertmaster since the fall 2015 season under the direction of John Armstrong and Alex Wang. She has also played with the Youth Music Illinois Youth Symphony for the last two years and this year serves as assistant principal second under the direction of David Commanday.
