Village trustees, public safety tax are ballot highlights BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com TONICA — Several issues will be at stake for area residents when they cast their votes in the Tuesday, April 2 Consolidated Election. Polls will open at 6 a.m. and remain open until 7 p.m. Elections include those for Lostant, Tonica, and Regional School Board trustees; and positions on the school boards for Tonica, LaSalle-Peru (L-P), Lostant and Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC). Voters will also decide whether to implement a .25 percent public safety sales tax to help meet the increased expenses of such county offices as the state’s attorney, coroner and sheriff. running for the four-year terms. Running for the two seats on the IVCC District Board of Trustees, which are six-year terms, are candidates Jane E. Goetz and Amy Sipovic-Boyles. The two LaSalle County candidates for the seats on the Regional Board of School Trustees are David Hagenbuch and Lloyd Vogel. There will be two polling places in Eagle Township, the Streator Incubator located at 401 W. Bridge St.; and the Kangley Village Hall, at 4501 Main St., in Kangley. Eden Township voters can will cast ballots at the American Legion Post at 115 S. LaSalle St. in Tonica or the Cedar Point Village Hall at 203 Oak St., in Cedar Point. Hope Township voters can cast their ballots at the Lostant Fire Station at 101 E. First St. in Lostant. Richland Township voters can vote at the Leonore Fire Station at 107 Monroe St. in Leonore. Vermillion Township voters can cast their ballots at the Vermillion Town Hall at 2202 E. 809th Road in Lowell.

Replacement of laptops considered by board LOSTANT — Lostant Grade School’s aging laptop computers are in need of replacement, and obtaining new devices might prompt more use of certain programs accessible to the district. Inconvenience of use regarding Lostant’s computers could be having an effect on student engagement with curriculum-related programs. “Our current laptops are taking a long time to start up, they’re buffering, they’re having problems with them, some don’t want to turn on,”
Superintendent Sandra Malahy told the school board, noting that the computers are seven years old and have reached a point of diminishing returns when it comes to repairs. Malahy learned of the situation while investigating why students have not been making more use of various programs the district pays for. She would have expected the convenience features, such as automatic grading, would entice the students to use the programs more. The cost to replace the district’s current 40 laptops with 40 new devices is $14,744, but Malahy cited a $14,011 grant that would bring the
out-of-pocket cost down to $733. In other discussion, Malahy brought up the possibility of bringing a school bus full of students to the track meet this year: “Our kids never get to see what the track meet looks like unless they’re in track,” which means fewer students choose to participate as time goes on, since “all of the schools have declining numbers and there are fewer kids out for track.” For his last full board meeting, after 16 years on the board, Mike Phillips told the board, “I just wanted to tell everybody I appreciate all their efforts.”

However, further locations have been suggested, such as Deer Park, which does not currently have a team. While the possibility remains that a Tonica team could form, Schneider

She added that her son wants to help give back to his community and thank the many people who previously donated their blood and continue to help save his life. “We are hoping for a very good turnout and the blood we obtain is obviously very good for the community and those in need of blood,” said Kim Knoblauch, Evan’s aunt in the advance press release. “Many times a transfusion of blood can be a matter of life or death.” “There are so many reasons why someone may need blood that we don’t even realize,” said Tammy Hibser, donor recruitment account manager for the Red Cross said in a press release. “We take for granted that blood
will be there at the hospital when we need it, but it can only come from generous volunteer donors. Giving blood in Evan’s name is a wonderful way to celebrate his life and potentially help others.” The drive also netted 17 Power Red donations. These donations are similar to whole blood donations, except a special machine allows for the donation of two units of red blood cells during one donation while returning the plasma and platelets to the donor. According to the American Red Cross, blood is needed every two seconds in the United States to respond to patient emergencies, including accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. TONICA — The village of Tonica exceeded expectations with residents’ support of the March 18 American Red Cross blood drive held at the United Methodist Church in honor of Evan Knoblauch. Joyce Obermiller, a representative from Illini State Bank, which sponsored the event, was thrilled to report that 82 pints were donated. “We’re extremely happy with the results. We had 65 available appointments and we filled 58 of them before the drive. We also had several walk-ins during the day,” she said. A Red Cross press release said Knoblauch, a volunteer firefighter, experienced a pain that was thought to be a pulled muscle in March 2017, just before his 18th birthday. After tests, Knoblauch was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a cancerous tumor that grows in the bones or in the tissue around bones. The tumor progressed to his lung, and after undergoing cancer treatments and receiving blood products, he thought he had won his battle against cancer, but recently learned it had returned. The day of the blood drive, Knoblauch was undergoing additional cancer treatments, but his mother and aunt were present. They said he still has a positive attitude and that he remembers how volunteer blood donors gave their blood knowing it would be needed by someone. “We think it’s wonderful how people are turning out for this to help because it’s so important. In the last two years, Evan has had seven

The Civil Air Patrol is a federally supported non-profit corporation serving as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. It’s a volunteer organization for people of all backgrounds, lifestyles and occupations who have an interest in aviation. It performs three

At 2:53 a.m. on March 18, deputies investigated a single-vehicle roll-over accident at Route 71, one-quarter mile east of E. 651st Road in Deer Park Township. Paul Gorisek, 40, of Tonica, was eastbound on Route 71 when a deer ran onto the road. Gorisek swerved to avoid the deer and went
off the road to the south and his vehicle rolled over. He was transported to IVCH by EMS. Gorisek was arrested for driving under the influence and also cited for improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating a motor vehicle on a foreign license while suspended. He was given a notice to appear and was released.
