Message from the Mayor
reetings,
As we enter the last two months of 2025, Batavia is full of progress and excitement.
Several new subdivisions along south Kirk Road and west of Van Nortwick Avenue are quickly filling with residents. Between 2022 and the end of 2026, Batavia is on track to add about 800 new homes, including single-family houses, townhomes, and senior living communities. At this pace, I predict Batavia’s population could surpass 30,000 by the 2030 federal census.
Looking toward the holidays, there’s no shortage of events that make Batavia shine. A community favorite is the Festival of Lights, which transforms downtown walkways and the Riverwalk into a sparkling holiday display. Local clubs, school groups, and holiday enthusiasts bring new decorations each year to celebrate the Christmas season and welcome the New Year.
Another highlight is the arrival of Santa Claus, accompanied by the Batavia Community Band under the direction of John Heath. This joyful tradition takes place on the Sunday evening after Thanksgiving at the Peg Bond Center and is always a memorable kickoff to the holiday season.
Winter in Batavia also means ice skating at Depot Pond, a beloved pastime for generations of families. Many residents fondly recall skating there as children and now watch their children and grandchildren enjoy the same tradition. One of Batavia’s proudest moments came on January 11, 1958, when the nationally published Saturday Evening Post featured a full-color John Falter painting of Depot Pond on its cover. Thanks to the Batavia Women’s Club, the original artwork now resides in the Batavia Depot Museum.
If you’d like a copy of that historic cover, free reproductions are available at the City Hall reception desk. This tradition began thanks to longtime historian and J.B. Nelson School principal William J. Wood, who discovered an original issue in an antique store in Canandaigua, New York, and made sure it would be shared with the community.

Finally, Batavia has even made its way onto international mail. A recently issued African postage stamp features our 1948 American LaFrance fire engine pumper—still proudly owned by the Batavia Fire Department and used today in parades and special events.
Batavia is thriving, celebrating its history, and building for the future. Thank you to everyone who contributes to making our city such a special place to call home.
Jeffery Schielke
JEFFERY SCHIELKE, Mayor of Batavia

A holiday present that will last forever
At the Flag Day Monument next to the Jeffery D. Schielke Government Center in downtown Batavia, the Fox Valley Patriotic Organization, with support from local and statewide organizations, plans to build an educational park and add lighting and other features. There are also many available spaces on the walkway around the Monument where people can purchase bricks to commemorate their family’s history or to honor those who contributed so much to our town, state, and country.
Please consider purchasing a brick for yourself or loved ones as a holiday gift. Few presents could last as long or be as meaningful as a lasered message of love, honor, or gratitude to those who inspire patriotic pride. Bricks can be purchased at

www.flagdaymonument.com, and direct donations to the Monument are also welcome.
Helpful tips to handle a sewer back-up
If your residence experiences a sewer back-up please call the City first at 630-454-2000, or during non-business hours or weekends call the non-emergency number for the Batavia Police Department, 630-454-2500. The problem might be in the City’s main line. By calling the City first, it could save you the price of hiring a private plumber. If the problem is in your own service line, the City can provide guidance in hiring a plumber. The City has emergency response personnel 24 hours per day.
Check your insurance policy to determine if you are covered for sanitary sewer back-up and/or sump pump failure. Many homeowners’
policies do not cover sewer backups or water damage unless you have purchased a special provision for this purpose.
If you experience a sewer back-up follow these guidelines for repairs and clean-up:
• Always call your insurance company first to report any damage to your property or possessions.
• The City of Batavia's insurance company will make a determination if the City is responsible for damages caused by a sewer backup.
Call the City of Batavia Finance Department for insurance claim questions, 630-454-2000.

What to do when a water main breaks
Water main breaks can happen without warning. They are often caused by shifting soil or the natural deterioration of the pipe. When breaks occur, the City of Batavia Water Division works to make repairs as quickly and safely as possible while minimizing disruptions to residents and traffic. The City appreciates the community’s patience during these necessary repairs.
Residents play a key role in reporting potential water main breaks. If you see bubbling water in the street or parkway, call the Water Division at 630-454-2450. After business hours, on weekends, or on holidays, please call the Batavia Police Department’s non-emergency line at 630-454-2500. Once notified, a Water Division crew will be dispatched to investigate.
Following a repair, residents in the affected or nearby areas may notice discolored water. This is usually due to rust or minerals stirred up during the repair process. If this occurs, run cold water from the lowest faucet in your home until the water runs clear.

City of Batavia
Residential leaf collection options explained
There are two leaf collection programs available to qualifying Batavia residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bills, curbside vacuum collection or leaf bag collection.
Curbside vacuum collection provides every resident with up to three collection opportunities (weather permitting).
Updates showing daily progress will be posted online at www.bataviail. gov once the program is underway. Dates may change due to the weather and volume of leaves put out for collection, although best efforts will be made to remain on schedule.
Snow or freezing weather may significantly delay or permanently halt curbside leaf collection, since some of the equipment used to remove leaves is also used to handle deicing/ snowplowing operations.
How the curbside vacuum collection program works:
• Rake leaves to the parkway by 6 a.m. on your scheduled Monday. Collection happens rain or shine.
• Crews will make one pass per home each collection period. Leaves placed after the crew passes may not be collected until the next scheduled date.
• Pile leaves within 6 feet of the curb, preferably in long windrows. Keep them in the parkway.
• Do not rake leaves into the street, as this can cause flooding and slippery conditions.
• Keep leaf piles clear of obstacles like parked cars, mailboxes, utility poles, hydrants, trees, or signs.
• Remove debris like sticks, bags, and plastic bottles from leaf piles to prevent injury, equipment damage, and contamination of leaves sent to agricultural sites.
• The program is designed to collect the majority of leaves during the scheduled time. Use other options for leaves that fall after the program ends.
• Crews with large vacuums work through streets, while smaller equipment handles cul-de-sacs and dead ends.
• Pile limbs and brush separately for scheduled collection. The final brush pickup will be the week of Dec. 2.
• Dispose of ornamental grasses, plants, and corn stalks as yard waste.
LEAF BAG COLLECTION PROGRAM
From Dec. 1 through Dec. 31, 2025, residents can place leaves in brown Kraft yard waste bags for collection
Groot offers holiday tree pickup
As part of the City of Batavia’s refuse contract, Groot Industries will provide free collection of one holiday tree per resident at no additional cost during the first two weeks in January on residents’ regular collection dates. Residents do not have to use a sticker for holiday tree removal on these dates only.
After the first two weeks in January, residents should attach a refuse sticker to the tree and place it at the curb on their regular collection date. All materials such as plastic bags, ornaments, lights, nails, etc. should be removed from the trees. Live wreaths and garland should be placed in your regular refuse.
East Side West Side LEAF COLLECTION DATES
Nov. 3
Nov. 10 Nov. 17* Nov. 24*
*Weather permitting
on their regular refuse day without a sticker. Yard waste bags (no cans) will be collected weekly until Dec. 31.
Only leaves are allowed in the bags — no grass or other yard waste. Please keep bags as dry as possible.
OTHER OPTIONS FOR LEAVES
• Use a mulching mower to mulch leaves back into the lawn, providing nutrients for the soil.
• Place leaves around plant beds and under trees and shrubs to enrich the soil and insulate plants.
• Stickered yard waste bags or cans will be collected weekly on your regular refuse day through Nov. 30.
If you have any questions about the leaf programs, please call the Street Division of Batavia Public Works at 630-454-2400. Residents also can visit www.bataviail.gov for the latest updates to the schedule and to view a progress map that is updated daily.
Final brush collection begins Dec. 1

The final curbside brush collection of the season begins Monday, Dec. 1, for both sides of town. The city’s contractor will pass each residence once during the week. After the final collection, any additional brush must be stored off the parkway until the program resumes in spring or removed by a private service at the resident’s expense. The collection is expected to be completed by the end of that week, weather permitting.
Residents can track the collection status on an electronic map, updated weekdays by 9 a.m. on bataviail.gov/brushcollection. If your brush was placed out by 7 a.m. on Monday and not collected by the end of the day on Friday, call Public Properties and Services at 630-454-2400 by Monday, Dec. 8.

What to know about snow removal in Batavia
The City of Batavia public works department is responsible for snow removal and ice control for 120 miles of streets, 168 cul-de-sacs, two city cemeteries, 17 city-owned parking lots, and sidewalks in several locations of the downtown area.
Snow and ice control is considered emergency work in that pavement must be cleared any time of the day or night.
Best efforts will be made to clear all primary streets during the snowstorm. Secondary streets will be plowed following the end of a snowfall after primary streets are cleared.
Crews will make their best efforts to plow aisles of city-owned public parking lots during and after a storm to maintain access to the parking lots during business hours. The major clearing of these lots is performed during the early morning hours.
Please follow these regulations and

guidelines to make your streets safer for travel during the winter season:
1. Do not to shovel, blow, or plow snow/ice onto the street at any time.
2. Parking is not allowed on any street during or after a snowfall in which there is an accumulation of 2 inches or more of snow.
3. Clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways is the responsibility of residents and property owners.
4. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to clear snow away from their
mailbox for curbside delivery.
5. If accumulating snow occurs on your refuse collection day or the night before, place garbage cans/ carts and recycling carts away from the curbs or edge of road during the snow plowing operation.
If a street has been missed or there is a question or concern relating to the snow removal operations, please call 630-454-2400 between 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For complete snow removal program details, visit www.bataviail.gov/snowremoval.
Prepping your home against cold temperatures
As we head into winter many homeowners face the expense and inconvenience of frozen water pipes, or high energy bills. Below are a few reminders on how you can prep this winter to help protect your home and your pocketbook.
Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses. Detaching the hose allows water to drain from the pipe so an overnight freeze doesn't burst the faucet or the pipe to which it’s connected.
Insulate pipes or faucets in unheated areas. It's best to wrap water pipes in unheated areas (such as the garage or crawl space) before temperatures plummet. You can find pipe wrapping materials at any hardware or building supply store.
Proper insulation can help reduce energy bills by up to 30%.
Consider installing heat tape or heat cable. Install heat tape or similar materials on all exposed water pipe (i.e. exterior pipe, or pipe located where the temperature might drop below freezing). It is relatively easy to install and can be found at your local hardware or building supply store. Be sure that you use only UL-listed products and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
Seal off access doors, air vents, and cracks. Winter winds whistling through overlooked openings can quickly freeze exposed water pipes. Do not plug air vents used by your furnace or water heater. Use caulking to fill cracks and stop leaks around
fixtures, pipes and between walls and windows – doing so will prevent freezing and help lower your energy bills.
Check on the water heater. Water heating is a major part of the utility bill. If you have problems, have a technician come by the house to make sure it’s functioning in peak condition. Also consider using less hot water and insulating the water heater tank and hot water lines.
Find the master water shutoff valve. Usually located where the water line enters your house (or near the water heater or washing machine), the master shutoff valve turns off the water to the entire house. Paint it a bright color and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is.

TIPS & TRICKS
Rejuvenation Pruning: Do you have a shrub that is too tall, wide or just out of control? Starting in late fall, you can prune up to one-third of the oldest stems down to the ground level. This is called a rejuvenation pruning and it will encourage young healthy branches to fill the open space in the spring.

Holiday Cheer at the Batavia Depot Museum
Fond wishes, annual updates and beautiful cards with simple signatures will provide heartwarming holiday cheer this December at the Batavia Depot Museum. Pulling from the deep collection of the Batavia Historical Society, this new exhibit features over 100 years of Christmas cards, New Year’s greetings and carol sheet music. The exhibit runs Nov. 29 through Dec. 14.
The tradition of sending elaborately decorated artistic messages at the end of the year came to America courtesy of Englishman Henry Cole who in 1843 was very behind on answering his mail. Cheap postage and improvement to the British mail system had dramatically increased the number of incoming letters, and Cole felt the social pressure to respond to them all. To streamline the chore of keeping up his correspondence, Cole commissioned an elaborate holiday illustration, printed 1,000 copies with a blank “to” line at the top and simply signed each friend’s name.

Museum Lab Live
What’s going on at the Museum Annex? Drop by the Annex, 150 Houston St., on Wednesdays this November between 2 and 4 p.m. to watch the curation team at work in the Museum Lab. Activities will vary depending on the day.
Batavia Depot Museum intern Julie Brachmann creates a condition report for an 1860 Kane County map in the collection of the Batavia Historical Society in the Museum Lab.
The first American holiday cards were designed and printed by Louis Prang in Boston in 1875. Prang’s illustrations were subtle natural scenes of birds, butterflies and flowers printed on large cards.
The scale and timeless subject matter made them extremely collectable for display in middle class American homes. Late 19th century printers went all out with embellishment; fancy cut or fringed borders, embossing, flocking or flakes of mica glitter showed off the printer’s technique and helped them stand out above the competition.

Modern 4-by-6-inch, single-fold cards didn’t arrive until 1915 when the Hall Brother’s Company (later Hallmark) began printing what would soon become the industry standard.
The Batavia Historical Society collection includes cards from the 1890s to the present, sent to and from Batavians. A selection of cards will be on display during the exhibit, which opens during Celebration of Lights on Nov. 30.

When you think about life inside our elementary schools, please think of this photo. When you look inside the classroom, past the beautifully decorated window, you see the principal of Louise White School, Mr. Wall. He is crouched next to a student's desk, asking her to be a bus buddy to a kindergartner. Mr. Wall and his dedicated staff have partnered all the kindergarten riders with a buddy, so they will have a friend to ride home with on the bus. Can you remember how scared you were on the first day of school, trying to find the right bus? Would you remember to get off at the right stop?
At BPS101, we fill our schools with people like Mr. Wall, who think of the little things that will make our students feel cared for and loved. And we have great partners in our families who send us students who will be buddies to those who need one.

This holiday season and beyond, honor your students' teachers and support staff through a donation to the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence. Donations will be used to fund our grant program. Each teacher/staff member will receive a certificate, honoring them and their excellence. BHS Productions Presents: Disney’s The Little Mermaid
Nov. 6, 8, 9
Dive into the magical world beneath the waves with "The Little Mermaid," the timeless story of Ariel, a spirited young mermaid who dreams of discovering the world beyond the sea. Fascinated by life on land, Ariel longs to explore, to find her voice and to live on her own terms. Along the way, she faces difficult choices, unexpected challenges and the
consequences of daring to step outside the boundaries others have set for her. While Ariel’s adventure is filled with unforgettable music, dazzling costumes and enchanting underwater worlds, it is also a story with a powerful message about identity, individuality and belonging. Ariel refuses to be confined by the expectations of her society or the limits others place on her, showing us that no one should be reduced to a label or told where they “fit.” Just like Ariel, we all have the right to discover who we truly are and follow our own path, even when the journey is uncertain or scary.
The production brings this beloved Disney tale to life with energy, imagination and heart, encouraging audiences to celebrate differences, challenge assumptions and embrace the courage it takes to be authentic. It is a story not just about dreams and adventure, but about empathy, understanding and the beauty of allowing everyone to define themselves.

Planting roots in Batavia allows creativity to flourish
Artist
Louise Miller reflects on finding her artistic home at Water Street Studios
By Kelley White | Photos provided by Louise Miller
When Louise Miller and her husband were in the thick of establishing their real estate firm in Houston, Miller turned to art as a distraction from the everyday grind of building a business.
“I began taking watercolor classes at a local community college, which blossomed into a full commitment to first 2D collage and later 3D ceramics and sculpture, eventually taking art, ceramics and sculpture classes at the Glassell School of Art in Houston for several years,” she says.
When the couple put down roots in Batavia, Miller gravitated to the creative environment and artistry of the area.
“As we were getting familiar with our new hometown of Batavia, I was drawn to the camaraderie and talent of the community of artists at Water Street Studios,” she says. “Since July of last year, I have taken several ceramic classes … in April of this year, a studio space opened up and I became a resident artist. I look forward to sharing both collage
and mixed-media techniques with others in the coming years.”
Miller has immersed herself in all the local opportunities to enjoy art and view diverse works.
“Since moving to the Fox River Valley, I have been thoroughly immersed in visiting the galleries, art fairs, and parks throughout the entire area,” she says. “The St. Mary’s Sculpture Park is one of my favorite go-tos for inspiration along with taking peaceful hikes on the many trails throughout the vast forest preserves that surround the Fox River and environs.”
As an artist, Miller seeks to further her creativity with ever-evolving inspiration.
“I am constantly challenging myself artistically with my painting and sculpture to produce works that respond to the ever-changing physical and emotional landscapes we are finding ourselves in,” she says. “One such project was to create sets of ceramic muses this past winter that personally evoke a sense of calm and serenity.” In the coming months, she will

About the artist
Louise Miller was born in Oak Park some years ago, and upon getting her masters in community planning, Miller and her husband moved to Houston, Texas, and spent the next 40 years working and building their commercial real estate appraisal firm. Upon retirement, the couple decided to move back to the northern climes, wanting a small-town atmosphere along with an art-friendly environment. Once they came upon Batavia and the Fox River Valley, they made the decision to move there and have been working at settling into their new home in the historic part of town. When Miller came across WSS last year, she knew she wanted to be a part of the unique and very special community.

work to scale up some of her work and add depth to her mixed media creations.
“Future goals are to create large organic pit-fired ceramic pieces and to incorporate more 3D elements into my mixed media framed art pieces,” she says.
When it comes to the role art plays within a community, Miller emphasizes the importance of presenting the opportunity for free creativity as soon as possible.
“As a child I was exposed to the visual, literary and dramatic arts from a young age and gained an appreciation,” she says. “The arts, and artistic expression itself, has historically been a strong influence on the human psyche, and that is why I believe that introducing young children to the arts at an early age, can not only benefit them but society in general.”
