Message from the Mayor

reetings,

As we begin a new year, it’s clear that many growth-related changes and opportunities are taking shape in Batavia. A host of new developments, both modern and historic, are now on our doorstep.

One of the most significant trends is the continued expansion of new housing. City records show that from 2022 through the end of 2026, Batavia will have added more than 700 new living units of various styles and sizes throughout our community.

Realtors frequently point to the qualities that make Batavia desirable: well-maintained homes, steadily increasing property values, and a welcoming atmosphere for all residents regardless of race, religion, or national origin. Community amenities also play a major role, including excellent schools, a dedicated park district, a strong public library, and vibrant cultural and recreational programs.

Batavia is fortunate to have exceptional public safety services. The Batavia Fire Department holds an ISO Class 1 rating, achieved by only a small number of departments statewide. Our Police Department provides visible, proactive safety through regular patrols and downtown security cameras.

Public Works continues to maintain and improve the city’s essential infrastructure—water, sewer, electric, streets, sidewalks, and parking lots. Snow removal, standing water concerns, and sidewalk repairs remain top priorities for our hardworking crews.

The strong performance of these government services, combined with an active faith community, a supportive Chamber of Commerce, a committed Batavia MainStreet team, and highly regarded school music and

Jeffery

athletic programs, all contribute to Batavia’s civic identity. Our rich history is preserved and celebrated thanks to the Batavia Historical Society, which helps keep community stories alive.

As we move into 2026, I want to share a prediction. Batavia’s last official population count in 2020 recorded 26,045 residents. Regional planners now report that Batavia’s residential growth is among the strongest in the area. Decisions made decades ago to rezone the Randall Road corridor for business and commercial use continue to pay dividends, generating substantial tax revenue and providing vital local jobs.

Based on current trends, planners project that Batavia will surpass 30,000 residents by 2030. Both Downtown Batavia and the Randall Road corridor will remain essential hubs for our growing community.

A PERSONAL NOTE

Shortly after Christmas, I became ill with COVID-19 and required care at Northwestern Medicine’s Delnor Hospital. The care I received was excellent, and I am grateful to be recovering well.

When land was selected for its Geneva facility, I had the honor of joining the mayors of Geneva and St. Charles in breaking ground for the project. After receiving such exceptional care, I feel renewed pride in that moment. Delnor Hospital continues to serve our region with dedication and compassion, and we are fortunate to have them in our community.

I look forward to all that 2026 will bring. Thank you for your support as we build a bright future together.

Batavia Flag Day Monument celebrates America 250

The Batavia Flag Day Committee is already working on providing an extra special June 14 Flag Day event on the Riverwalk in downtown Batavia to help celebrate America’s 250th birthday. More information will be available in the weeks ahead regarding the celebration and other events in our area that will tie in to our special observance.

America 250 (our country’s Semiquincentennial) is the nationwide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence

on July 4, 1776. Activities have been going on throughout the country since Memorial Day of last year. The culmination of celebrations will occur this coming fourth of July throughout the United States. Visit america250. org for more information about this milestone in our nation’s history. Batavia is registered as a participating community in these national events.

For more information about Batavia’s Flag Day Monument, visit flagdaymonument.com.

Citywide garage sales to support the 4th of July fireworks show

The Batavia Fireworks Committee will be hosting their 32nd annual Citywide Garage Sales on May 1-2, 2026. The application form to host a garage sale is at bataviafireworks. org. A application form will also be included in the City of Batavia March utility bill.

Order a parkway tree

The City of Batavia offers residents an opportunity to purchase a parkway tree as part of its commitment to reforestation in Batavia. The available species are locally grown, quality trees that do well in City parkways. A variety of species is offered each year to provide a diversified parkway tree population for our community.

To apply for a tree: Complete and submit the online request form available at bataviail.gov/ parkwaytree. Requests are accepted until March 31 for spring trees, or while supplies last. Quantities are limited. For questions or to request a paper form, call the City of Batavia Public Properties & Services Division, 630-454-2400.

The Citywide Garage sale is a fundraiser that helps pay for Batavia’s annual 4th of July Fireworks Sky Concert. Donations come from businesses, organizations and citizens who delight each year in gathering as a community and celebrating our country’s birthday. Anyone can donate

online at any time throughout the year to help make our 2026 America 250 show the best one yet!

The Batavia Fireworks Committee is always looking for more members and volunteers. Visit bataviafireworks.org for more information.

MAHONEY CREEK – MICHAEL WILD PARK DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS

The City of Batavia is pleased to announce that the Mahoney Creek – Michael Wild Park Drainage Improvements Project final design has been completed and was advertised for bidding in January 2026. With Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) grant funding secured, the project continues to advance toward construction.

Currently, the buried storm sewer that conveys Mahoney Creek through Michael Wild Park is prone to flooding. The planned improvements will daylight the creek, creating a naturalized open channel with aesthetic wetland pools. The project also includes a new pedestrian bridge to carry the existing path over the restored creek channel.

Construction is anticipated to begin this Spring 2026. For more information, visit bataviail.gov/ michaelwild.

What to do if you experience a sewer back-up

Sewer back-ups can happen unexpectedly and cause significant inconvenience and damage. If you experience one in your home, following the right steps can help minimize costs and ensure a quick response.

CALL THE CITY FIRST

If your residence experiences a sewer back-up, call the City of Batavia immediately at 630-454-2000, or 630454-2500 weekends or after business hours.

The issue may be in the City’s main sewer line rather than your private

service line. By calling the City first, you may avoid the cost of hiring a private plumber unnecessarily. If the issue is within your service line, City staff can offer guidance on hiring a licensed plumber.

The City has emergency response personnel available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

REVIEW YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE

Check your homeowner’s insurance policy to see if you are covered for sanitary sewer back-up or sump pump failure. Many standard policies do not include this protection unless you have purchased a special endorsement. Contact your insurance agent for clarification or to add this coverage.

STEPS TO TAKE AFTER A BACK-UP

1. Call your insurance company first to report any damage to your property or personal belongings.

2. The City of Batavia’s insurance carrier will review the situation and determine whether the City is responsible for any damage caused by the back-up.

3. Keep these important City contact numbers handy:

n Water/Sewer Division: 630-454-2450

n Finance Department (Insurance Claims): 630-454-2000

By following these steps, you can ensure that any sewer back-up is handled quickly, safely, and with the right assistance.

Brush collection resumes in April

Curbside residential brush collection resumes in April for residents that pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bill. Brush/limbs are to be at the curb for collection no later than 7:00 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled week, but no sooner than the weekend before that. Crews will make only one pass by each residence.

MORE INFORMATION ONLINE

2026 collection dates are pending.

Please check City website, bataviail.gov/ brushcollection for updates.

Brush placed out after our crews have passed will not be collected until the next scheduled pickup date.

The amount of brush that has been placed out citywide in any given month dictates how quickly your area will be reached, but each side of town is typically completed by Friday of the scheduled week. The collections are for homeowner trimming and meant to handle most minor storm damage limbs that fall during the season; special collections are done very rarely. Brush/trimmings that are generated by a private service must be removed by that service and may not be put out for brush collection. Major storms may affect the schedule, and a notice of any special brush collection will be posted on the City’s website. If your brush was out at 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled collection week and not collected by the end of the workday on Friday, please notify the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 no later than the following Monday.

The following procedures must be followed to ensure the collection of your brush:

• Maximum diameter is 6” (logs cannot be split); maximum length of limbs is 12 feet.

• Brush should be stacked into one large pile in the front/side parkway with cut ends facing the curb, and placed away from parkway trees, mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, hydrants, and parked vehicles. Brush will not be collected from alleys or vacant lots.

• Brush/limbs must not be tied, bundled, in containers, bagged, or put on the street.

• Brush pile should contain only brush. Foreign objects will not be collected.

• Program is for residentially generated brush only, not contractor tree removals or trimming.

• Brush left out on the parkway between collection dates is subject to a possible code violation citation.

For materials that do not meet the above specifications:

• Groot Industries will collect yard waste bags/32-gallon cans (not to exceed 50 pounds per bag/32gallon can) consisting of twigs, evergreen clippings, roots, stumps, and plants on your regular trash collection day, beginning the week of April 1. During the weeks of April 6 and April 13, yard waste will be collected without a sticker. For the remainder of the season, from April 20 through November 30, a refuse sticker should be attached to the yard waste bag or 32-gallon can. If a can is used, it should be clearly marked “Yard Waste” on the side facing the street.

• Residents with limbs/brush exceeding the requirements for the program can contact a private service to have it removed at the resident’s expense.

• Unincorporated residents should contact their township offices regarding brush collection services that may be available to them.

If you have any questions, please call the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 weekdays from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. or visit our website at www.bataviail.gov/brushcollection.

Yard waste collection begins week of April 1

Weekly yard waste collection begins the week of April 1. Yard waste will be collected the weeks April 6 and April 13 without a sticker. For the remainder of the season, April 20 through Nov. 30, yard waste units require a refuse sticker.

Refuse stickers are available for purchase at several local outlets. A complete list is available at bataviail.gov/stickervendors.

Residents should place a refuse sticker on each generic yard waste bag or 32-gallon can and put bag/can at the curb on their regular collection date. Yard waste is collected separately from regular refuse and recycling. Cans must be clearly labeled yard waste on the front, and a refuse sticker should be attached to the handle. Plastic bags cannot be used. Maximum capacity is 50 pounds per yard waste bag or container. Yard waste carts are also available to rent for a fee through Groot Industries. Refuse may not be mixed with yard waste.

Yard waste includes grass clippings; leaves; branches and brush; other yard and garden trimmings; vines, garden plants and flowers; weeds; tree droppings (pinecones and crabapples); and other similar organic waste materials. Sod is not included.

Please contact the Public Properties and Services Division at 630-454-2400 with any questions.

TIPS & TRICKS

March is pruning time. Remove any damaged branches on your trees or shrubs, prune late bloomers and those that don't bloom while the ground remains frozen.

Tickets are sold through Eventbrite. Cost is $39.19 for general admission, $55.20 for premier tickets and $12.51 for designated driver tickets. Prices reflect an Eventbrite processing fee. General and premier ticket prices go up by $5 after May 23.

Tickets for Batavia Uncorked are now on sale at bataviaparks.org/ event/batavia-uncorked.

Attendees and ticket purchasers must be 21 years or older and present valid, state-issued ID card at the time of checkin. Last call is at 3:30 p.m. and the last pour is at 3:45 p.m. No one under age 21 will be allowed to enter the festival. Pets are not permitted.

matches. The camp is ideal for beginner and intermediate players. Cost is $75. Register at bataviaparks. org/program/pickleball.

To Secure These Rights…

Spring Exhibit Opens March 1

This year marks a monumental moment in the history of America and the Batavia Depot Museum commemorates 250 years since the Declaration of Independence along with the rest of the country.

“Museums across the nation have been planning 250th exhibits and programs for years,” said Museum Director Kate Garrett.

“Batavia’s direct connection to the Revolutionary War is pretty slight, so we wanted to look at the bigger themes of the Declaration and the patriots of 1776.”

A new temporary exhibit, “To Secure These Rights…” opens spring 2026 at the Museum. Visitors will find displays that celebrate Batavians who have taken action to secure the Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness envisioned in America’s

founding document. From military service, to the fight for universal suffrage, to advocacy for the rights of all people, “To Secure These Rights” honors the ongoing struggle to form a more perfect Union. The exhibit opens with the return of regular visiting hours on March 1, and an evening opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, March 5, from 6-8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

Gather & Remember history in Batavia

The Batavia Historical Society and the Museum are collaborating for “Gather & Remember,” an oral history series. Every third Thursday at 10 a.m. join Historical Society members at the Callahan Community Center for refreshments

and good conversation on a variety of themes. Share your maternal figure’s good advice at “My Mother Always Said…” in March, and tell your whoppers in April with “Gone Fishing.” Get tickets at bataviaparks. info/gather.

Admission to the Batavia Depot Museum is always free. Museum hours are 2-4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, beginning March 1.

Ghostlight

April 16-18 • 7:30 p.m.

This spring, BHS Drama presents a shocking, funny and touching play, "Ghostlight," by Stephen Gregg. The show will be performed at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre on April 16-18.

Here's the story: When indifferent student Garbiela Nettles is inexplicably admitted to the prestigious Doves Forge Academy, all she wants to do is leave. But before she can get herself expelled, Garbiela starts to hear sounds that no one else hears: ghost echoes from the remnants of a long-ago tragedy in the school’s theatre. As she investigates the sounds (by joining the disastrous play in progress), Garbiela uncovers a story that’s both surprising and surprisingly moving.

Theatrically staged using the production’s audience –that’s right, audience participation – and live sound effects like something out of a radio play, this show has hilarious characters, unexpected twists and a riotous finale.

Batavia Public Library

Under the Cupola

Hello Batavia!

One of my favorite parts of working at the Batavia Public Library is witnessing the ways our community shows up for one another—through curiosity, generosity, and shared experiences that bring us closer together. This year, two of our most joyful and meaningful initiatives do exactly that: One Book, One Batavia and Prom Dress Giveaway.

Each year, One Book, One Batavia invites the community to read together and connect through book discussions, special events, and themed programs. This year’s theme is especially heartwarming: animal rescue stories. We’re featuring three wonderful reads for all ages: Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals by Laurie Zaleski for adults, Gather by Kenneth M. Cadow for teens, and Animal Rescue Friends by Jana Topper for kids. These books celebrate compassion, resilience, and the special bonds that form when humans and animals care for each other.

We have fun programs planned throughout the season, including book discussions and activities for families and young readers. One highlight we’re especially excited about is an evening with Funny Farm author Laurie Zaleski, where readers will have the chance to hear directly from the woman behind an unforgettable true story—and to learn more about the incredible world of rescue animals.

Equally inspiring is the wonderful response to our annual Prom Dress Giveaway, an event that continues

to grow each year thanks to the generosity of CHIP IN Batavia and donations from the community. Watching the line form before we even open the doors is a powerful reminder of how important it is to create supportive, welcoming opportunities for teens and families. For students, prom is a milestone—something they look forward to for years—and we are proud to help make it more accessible by offering beautiful formalwear at no cost. We are deeply thankful to everyone who donated dresses, tuxedos, shoes, jewelry, and accessories, and to the volunteers and staff who helped create a dignified, uplifting shopping experience for every student.

These initiatives may look different on the surface—one centered on reading, the other on celebration—but they share something essential: they reflect what libraries do best. We are here to meet people where they are, help remove barriers, and create experiences that build community.

Thank you, Batavia, for continuing to make your library a place where everyone belongs.

Warmly,

There's lots more to come for BATV this year! Come say hello at our new location at the Callahan Community Center, or be in our Voice of the Town segments to win prizes and shout out to your friends.

BATV will be at more events than ever: Windmill City Fest, River Rhapsody, Batavia Farmers Market, Flag Day, the fireworks show and more! Follow us on Facebook @batv1017 and on YouTube @batv1017 as we showcase the community and all of the fun happenings around the City of Batavia.

With the warmer weather returning, the seasonal community events in Batavia return as well. BATV starts its coverage with the Park District's Egg Hunt event on March 28. Join us, and you may appear in our coverage! Or ask to be part of our Voice of the Town segment. Be sure to follow BATV's YouTube page to keep up to date on our coverage of community events this year. Comment on any video and tell us what you are most looking forward to in 2026!

Batavia Community

United is the Way…to soup!

For over 95 years, Batavia United Way has worked to improve lives in the community. No matter the challenge, we make a bigger impact together than alone. United is the Way we build community resiliency through volunteer projects like Snow Angels and Adopt-AFamily. United is the Way to a healthier community through support of local food pantries, health support services and prescription drug support. United is the Way to youth opportunity providing scholarships to preschoolers and Imagination Library books to all Batavia children. United is the Way we create a better future where everyone thrives.

Each year, United Way events help fund these services and more. March brings the organization's Soup’s On soup tasting event where ticket holders

have the opportunity to sample 12 soups from local restaurants while enjoying connecting with neighbors. The Community Dinner Table event brings neighbors together at one long table to share a meal in late summer. The spooktacular Bat Race 5K/10K on Oct. 24 brings lots of family-friendly fitness fun. Tickets are now available for the 9th Annual Soup’s On Event! For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.BataviaUnitedWay.org.
