Angelo’s Pizzeria: Homemade with fresh ingredients for 50-plus years

Fresh and homemade have been part of the recipe for success at Angelo’s Pizzeria since 1952.
With four locations covering Rock Falls, Sterling and Dixon, this 50+ year favorite for great eats is once again a Sauk Valley Favorite, thanks in part to its beloved pizza and salad bar.
In addition to a full slate of pizza options, Angelo’s specialty pizzas include Angelo’s Special, Taco Pizza, Spaghetti Pizza, B.L.T. Pizza, Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza, Chicken Bacon Ranch, Chicken Bacon Barbecue, and Mac’N Cheese.
President and CEO Michelle Hodge said the two most popular choices are Angelo’s unique Spaghetti Pizza and “The Special”, which includes sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onion, green pepper, and tomato.
“Out of our specialty pizzas, I think it’s a close tie between the Spaghetti Pizza and the Special,” Hodges said. And pepperoni is also king when it comes to most typically ordered regular pizza.
“Pepperoni is one of the most popular pizzas because I think everybody just knows what pepperoni tastes like. I think like with sausage, you never know from place to place. I think pepperoni is one of those staple things and most kids love pepperoni pizza.”
Sausage lovers need not despair when they order from the locally owned and operated Angelo’s – because they know exactly what they are getting.
“In this area, I believe everybody loves our sausage pizza. We spice the sausage ourselves. It’s a family
recipe, the spices in the sausage, so it’s different than anybody else’s because of the recipe. We don’t buy, you know, sausage, we buy ground pork and season it ourselves,” Hodges said.
And that homemade touch continues all the way to the sauce.
“Our sauce is made fresh at every location, everyday, and again, it is made with our own spice blend,” Hodges said. “We use fresh ground beef and a very high-quality tomato puree to give it that rich tomato flavor.”
That attention to detail utilizing fresh ingredients is one of the reasons Angelo’s remains a Sauk Valley Favorite.
“We really try to source our ingredients from the same company to stay consistent through the years. It’s very important to us to have good ingredients, meat with no fillers, cheese that is 100% cheese. We don’t buy cheese that is blended with soy. We grind up our own cheese. It comes in big blocks, it all gets to a betterquality pizza.”
But Angelo’s salad bar at Angelo’s II in Sterling and Angelo’s III in Dixon are also a customer favorite.
“We pride ourselves in both those salad bars at Angelo’s II and Angelo’s III,” said Hodges. “There was a salad bar in the old building in Sterling before we built the new building – Angelo’s II in 2004.”
Attention to detail and making sure only fresh ingredients are used are key to the salad bar’s success.
“We cut everything, we have our salad people, they cut everything fresh every single day. We don’t buy any bagged stuff. They wash the vegetables, prepare them,
and cut them fresh every day,” said Hodges.
Angelo’s also offers specialty sandwiches on freshbaked Italian bread.
This locally owned and operated pizzeria started in a small building on 12th Avenue in Rock Falls that still stands, offering the diner-like feel it has held for the last 50 years.
In 1982, a larger, family friendly dine-in restaurant was built in Sterling and soon became a favorite place for friends and family to share a hearty, homemade meal.
A delivery location on East Third Street in Sterling opened in 1992 and expanded on Locust Street in 2001.
A new, larger Angelo’s II was constructed in 2004 on East Lincolnway with a large dining area and full bar including big screen TVs followed by Angelo’s III in Dixon.
ONE OF THE FAVORITE CREDIT UNIONS
Cornerstone Credit Union –where they know your name

The main ingredient in the formula for success at the Cornerstone Credit Union of Sterling is a sweet and simple one – treat people like family.
Tracing its origin back to 1939, the Cornerstone Credit Union now serves more than 10,300 members and welcomes membership to anyone who lives or works in the northwest Illinois counties of Boone, Bureau, Carroll, JoDaviess, Ogle, Lee, Stephenson, Whiteside, and Winnebago.
Cornerstone’s mission is to provide a “community-focused financial cooperative committed to providing quality, differentiated services to its member owners”.
And its Sterling branch certainly lives up to that mission as evidenced by its selection as a 2026 Sauk Valley Favorite.
“I can tell you from doing testimonials with customers that the employees at our Sterling office are outstanding,” said Patti Pederson, marketing manager for Cornerstone. “Our members are very, very happy with the team at the Sterling branch.”
At the helm of the Sterling branch is manager Melissa Rippy.
“Melissa does a great job leading that group and making sure everybody is treated like family,” said Pederson. “It is not the normal banking situation where they come in and just do a transaction. People really get the feeling that everybody cares, because everybody does care.
“I can’t count how many people told me that they walk
in and they know them by name,” Pederson continued. “They get greeted by name just by walking in the door and that means a lot.”
So, how does Rippy create that level of customer care with her small staff?
“I just look at it as treating our members just like you would want to be treated, going over and above, making all of them feel the same whether they have a dollar in their account or they have $500,000 with us,” Rippy said. “At the end of the day, we just always try to go over and above to treat them how they should be treated.”
Trust is also a major element used to reach that success.
“I look at it as a trust thing. The more that they can trust us the more we’re able to help them and take care of their financial needs,” Rippy said. “My staff does great as far as that goes.”
Maintaining eye contact and inquiring about our customers’ family members also helps build that rapport.
“I feel all of that is very important for successful business,” Rippy said,
Rippy worked at a bank for 13 years before joining the credit union ranks.
“The biggest difference I saw was the fact that we are not-for-profit, so we are able to give back to our community, which, obviously, anybody knows nowadays there’s a lot of people in need,” Rippy said. “We really do try to give back to organizations that benefit people who are in our community so they can thrive and do better.”
A community relations committee formed by the credit union meets monthly to review requests received from community organizations.
The Sterling branch, which serves approximately 2,700 customers, has also been a drop-off location for Toys for Tots.
“That was a very productive event,” said Pederson. “I think it’s important to make sure that everyone understands that anybody in those counties can become a member. It is not based on being part of a specific company. It’s anyone in the 11 counties that we serve, or if they’re related to someone who is a member already.”
That particular detail distinguishes Cornerstone from other credit unions, Rippy said.
Cornerstone is very committed to the whole credit union theory of people helping people.
“And that shines in Sterling,” said Pederson. “They make sure people feel heard, that people’s needs are met, and that we understand what they’re doing, and what they’re dealing with, because everybody has some kind of struggle, and your finances shouldn’t have to be as big of a struggle as they sometimes are. If you have a good relationship with a credit union they can help you understand what you can do differently.”
Pederson said Rippy is excellent at helping people who have been scammed as well as those who are dealing with fraud.
“She sits down and walks them through things, helps investigate, and tries to put those pieces in place that will help protect their money and give them a better understanding of what to look for in a fraud or scam,” Pederson said. “I don’t know that every financial institution goes to that level of care for their members. Our team does. I am very proud.”
“I agree with that 100 percent,” said Rippy. “All of us are here to protect them [customers]. At the end of the day, our number one goal is to protect them and just make sure that they’re happy and taken care of.”

This Dixon-based company, owned and operated by Brian and Jennifer Dabney, has become a Sauk Valley Favorite when it comes to repairs for vehicles of all sizes and shapes, from the family car to commercial trucks and farm equipment.
Sporting an elite fleet of light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty towing, recovery, and service vehicles, Dabney Services offers 24/7 services in northwestern and central Illinois servicing Dixon, Sterling, Rock Falls, Freeport, Rockford, Belvidere, DeKalb, Sycamore, Amboy, Polo, Oregon, Mt. Morris, Rochelle, Manlius, Lanark, Mount Carroll, Mendota, Sublette, Princeton and Sheffield.
The company responds to any size collision or need, providing recovery, tow-away, and cleanup under any conditions, including snow.
They can transport your vehicle to where you want it to be repaired or they can send it to their shop, where
they can perform most repairs on commercial and noncommercial vehicles and equipment – including finding the right part to make the needed repairs.
In 2022, the Dabneys – with 40 years of combined experience in the commercial trucking industry – realized that the surrounding area needed a locally based “heavyduty” recovery equipment operator and expanded their fleet to handle big rigs and their loads.
Having been a commercial driver, Brian knew firsthand how time is of the essence for commercial drivers and how important it is to get back on the road and back on schedule to make deliveries on time.
He started his own trucking business back in 2001 when he purchased his first truck just after high school graduation. He started managing his own trucking business while enrolled at Bradley University, attending classes 2-3 days a week and driving a truck on the other days.
After graduating with a degree in business management, Brian continued his trucking operations and expanded that business to repairs and towing after experiencing his own breakdowns.
The company has seven tow trucks based at the Dixon
location. In 2024, the Dabney’s acquired Senica Interstate Towing in LaSalle, adding roughly 20 tow trucks.
“We had heavy duty equipment since we got going. We more or less wanted to focus on heavy duty than light duty, but they both go hand in hand. You’ve got to have the light duty to go with the heavy-duty side,” Brian said.
With shops in Dixon and LaSalle, Dabney’s regional location allows for a quick response when breakdowns or accidents happen and staffs full-time mechanics who specialize in heavy-duty equipment repairs.
“We’ve got seven full-time mechanics in the shop that do the heavy-duty diesel repairs,” Brian said.
The shop has partnerships with major suppliers that help them complete repairs on commercial and non-commercial vehicles quickly to get drivers back on schedule and on the move.
Providing needed services to the area at an affordable price is paramount for Brian.
“We’re just trying to be in a good light within the community here for the local area. We try to provide a service at a reasonable price,” Brian said.

Offering the right ride for Sauk Valley residents is nothing new for Kunes Auto Group.
The robust selection of vehicles at Kunes Chrysler
Dodge Jeep Ram of Sterling has once again resulted in readers making them a favorite when the time comes for a new or used vehicle.
The auto group started in 1996 in Delavan, Wisconsin and now has more than 40 stores across the county that
offer a wide range of high-quality vehicles for customers.
Expansion of services is just one of the hallmarks for the Sterling dealership, said Josh Embry, general manager.
“Our services are expanding and our sales are also expanding,” said Embry. “Everything’s pretty new.”
The dealership increased its staff and inventory last year when it absorbed the Kunes dealership in Oregon.
“We did absorb some of the employees as well,” said Embry. “No one went without a position within the company if they wanted to stay.”
Staying in step with technology improvements, features and service requirements for new vehicles continues to be a main focus at the dealership.
“Technology is huge. Every one of our salespeople are specialists in all the technology. If anyone has any issues, they can come in and talk to us and we’d be more than happy to help out anyway we can,” he said.
In addition to traditional powertrains, Kunes also of-
fers hybrid vehicles to its customers, but has yet to see a demand for electric vehicles in the local market.
With 2027 vehicles just starting to be ordered, Embry outlined some of the new models that will soon hit the showroom floor.
“We have the all-new Cherokee that just came back out, that is the hybrid. That gets 39 miles to the gallon in the city,” Embry said. “The Grand Wagoneer is an all-new design. That’s just some of the newer stuff that’s coming out.”
In line with the Kunes Auto Group slogan of “Faith, Family, and Giving Back”, Embry is also proud of the Sterling dealership’s current and planned community in-
volvement initiatives. The auto group employs more than 2,000 people overall and donates 10% of its yearly net profits to charities in the communities where dealerships are located.
“We have involvement with the local schools and the community and things like that,” he said. “We’re sponsoring car shows and cruise nights this year as well.”
“That’s what we really are trying to get back to the most since I’ve taken over the GM role, is to get back in the community as much as we can.”
Kunes Auto Group has six locations in four cities in the Sauk Valley region. Outside of Sterling, dealerships are located in Morrison and Mt. Carroll.

To say Ken Duncan knows McKenna Flooring from the ground up is a bit of an understatement. And make no doubt about it – this business is focused on flooring.
Duncan started laying flooring in 1982 when he was a sophomore in high school.
“I started laying flooring with a guy named Mick McKenna who worked at the Mill at the time, but we just installed and didn’t own a store,” Duncan said.
Duncan left the installation business to pursue another career and McKenna moved on to open his own flooring store.
After retiring, Duncan bought McKenna out in 2017 and has been at the helm of the full-service store ever since.
“We have a retail store. We do vinyl plank, carpet, hardwood, tile, custom showers,” said Duncan, who has watched flooring preferences change dramatically throughout the years.
“It was predominantly the old linoleum and carpet and ceramic tile when I first started. Here, in the last 10, 15 years, vinyl plank has come into the scene, so to speak, and it has pretty much replaced the old linoleum and tile,” he said. “You know trends and colors and products are so much better and longer lasting now. They’re very durable
products now.”
Products now offered by McKenna, such as modern hard-surface vinyl, easily surpass the durability of flooring options in the past.
Other flooring choices offered by McKenna Flooring include tile, carpet, and hardwood.
And matching the right flooring to each individual customer is paramount to Duncan.
“We’re very thorough when we’re meeting with our clients,” Duncan said. “Number one, I always ask how they hear about us and they may say well, we heard you’re on the radio, or word of mouth or whatever it is because I like to track, you know, what’s working and what’s not working.”
Meeting with each customer and learning what their flooring needs are is all part of the specialized service that makes the business a Sauk Valley Favorite.
“We take our time and we explain things. When a customer calls that says, ‘Hey, I’m interested in flooring’ I go to their home, I do their evaluation, and we itemize every step of the process, and people really like that because there’s no hidden charges. We don’t bury any costs,” said Duncan. “We itemize everything. People really appreciate that. We’re very transparent in our estimates and the products.”
Offering medium to high-end products is also a core business practice.
“The type of products that we carry are, I want to say, medium to the high end. They are products that we feel comfortable installing and standing behind. If it is a substandard product, we just don’t carry it. Our name has been out there for a long time and we’re not gonna jeopardize our name,” he said.
“We’re a full-service shop,” Duncan continued. “We carry the name-brand products, Mohawk and Shaw. You know, they’re the two big players. They have the best products, the best warranties, the best shipping. You can’t beat them. They’re very, very good. We carry other brands, too, but, you know, the two household names are Mohawk and Shaw. Everybody knows who they are.”
And Duncan stands firmly behind what they sell,
“And then we service what we sell. I have three fulltime crew that install. We’re a one-stop shop as far as when it comes to floors,” he said.
Another location to augment the company’s main store in Milledgeville is on the horizon
“I started working with Mick [McKenna] and he taught me how to install. I ended up buying the store and it’s going good. We’re getting ready to open a new location that’s undisclosed right now, so we’re expanding.”

Curia was chosen to represent the Illinois Automobile Dealers Association in the national competition – one of only 49 auto dealers nominated for the 56th annual award from more than 20,000 nationwide.

ONE OF THE FAVORITE EVENT VENUES
Historic Dixon Theatre continues to shine with plenty of entertainment opportunities

Entertainment aficionados have chosen The Dixon Historic Theatre as a Sauk Valley Favorite when it comes to an entertainment venue – and the plan is to make the 104-year-old icon shine a lot brighter in years to come.
Fresh off a $1.5 million restoration in 2024, the theater is being transformed into a modern-day entertainment venue and “the place” to see live shows, classic movies and plenty of other events.
“Our hope is to have at least one event every week,” said Spencer Aurand, executive director. “That depends on routing and scheduling, depending on, you know, who’s coming through the area and interested in stopping at the theater…all of that. Ideally, we would have about one show or one live event happening every week.”
Scheduling for the 2026 season has already been completed and was announced in March.
“We’ve got a lot of really cool acts coming in,” Aurand said. “We’ve got the ‘Purple Experience’, which is a Prince Tribute and we’ve an Amy Winehouse tribute, ‘Dear Amy’ coming in at the end of August. And there is a fantastic Elton John tribute that we’re bringing in called ‘Rocket Man.’”
“He (Rus Anderson) has a Vegas residency and this is actually his Vegas show that he packs up and takes on the road. It’s going to be a really big splashy show. One
that will be really exciting,” Aurand said of the September show.
And in October the theater really beings to rock.
That month includes “Classical Blast”, a blend of classical music with rock music. Additional bands stepping on to the stage include a a metal band out of New York called “Atrophy”, Eagles and John Mellencamp tributes, and Black Sabbath and Slayer tributes.
“And then we’re capping everything off with a really big, cool, Queen tribute, on the 24th,” Aurand said. “We’re really excited to have the ‘Almost Queen’ tribute because the whole staff and I sat down one day and went through and reviewed through the promo videos of probably two dozen or so different Queen tribute bands and kind of ranked them based on different qualities until we landed on the one we liked the most. October’s gonna be a really big month.”
Events continue in November with two kids’ productions, and the Transiberian Orchestra Tribute, which has become an annual holiday tradition at the theater.
“I think we’re gonna see an even wider variety of shows in 2027, but this fall, a big focus of mine was to bring in shows that we haven’t had here before. We polled a lot of our volunteers and talked to them, and Elton John and Queen were probably two of the biggest, most-requested artists,” Aurand said.
But tributes are not the only acts being looked at for upcoming years. Keith Anderson, a country artist out of Nashville, is scheduled for August 2027. McKenna Faith Winters, another talented country artist originally from the Dixon area, will be opening for Anderson.
“She just released her first album, and is doing work down in Nashville,” Aurand said. “We’re really excited to have McKenna coming in and opening for that show as well.”
Other shows planned in the future include magic shows, Motown shows, country shows and Christmas events in December. Aurand is quick to credit his team with the theater’s ongoing success.

“And we’re always looking for more com-
munity partners to work with us on events, both corporate sponsors that might be interested in helping us bring in bigger acts and then, also, local nonprofits and organizations that want to come in and do things here.
“My aim is to make the Dixon Theatre more of a community hub where people feel like they can come and do things and where people feel like this is their space – a place where they’re welcome to come and do things,” he said.
Funding sourcing and restoration work on the theater continues.
“We’re always going to be in a constant state of doing something to the building. There’s a lot of modernization that is always happening,” Aurand said
“Right now, we’re running our encore capital campaign to finish off a lot of the work we originally wanted to get done with the renovation.”
He said some of the work had to be pushed back due to increasing prices. That campaign is focusing on replacing the main floor chairs and restoring the terrazzo.
SLEEK Hair Salon and Spa: Ready

SLEEK Hair Salon and Scalp Spa has just added another service to help their clients look good, feel good, and do good.
Spray tans have joined the extensive list of services that spa owner Abbie Wolf uses to help her business mantra of “Look Good. Feel Good. Do Good” ring even more true.
“We are mostly known for our Head Spa treatments,” said Wolf, who opened SLEEK in July 2024. The spa now provides clients with a risk-free way to get that summer-like tan.
“It’s sunless tanning, there’s no UV rays so it’s not damaging or carcinogenic,” Wolf said.
An airbrush-like technique is used to apply the tan, with a variety of rinsing options specially designed to meet each client’s desire.
“We offer classic or rapid rinse times tailored to fit into each client’s schedule. We can spray it on a client and they go about their normal day. Depending on how dark they’re wanting to be determines the rinse
time,” Wolf said.
Wolf is a licensed cosmetologist and Dixon native with more than 10 years of experience in her field. She expanded into trichology – the specialized scientific study of the hair and scalp – when she saw a need from her clients.
“I have built and designed an elevated SLEEK Head Spa service that our technicians use on our clients daily,” said Wolf.
“Working with me means regaining confidence through a healthy and happy scalp, giving it the best environment possible to regrow lost hair.”

A God send for my family.
Gaffey was a literal God send for my family. All of the nurses went above and beyond to make sure my uncle was well taken care of in his final two months. They even have private duty helpers to come in and help when it’s needed. The social worker Anita is awesome with words and is a genuinely good soul! Kallie is a literal walking angel! She is so sweet, passionate, and caring. She is amazing at what she does! Even after having to come to my home 3 times in one day she show nothing but sympathy and kindness! The nurse went out of her way multiple times to help out and bring stuff that was needed. She was also so compassionate and caring. Deb from private care was also very helpful and made us feel very comfortable with everything that was going on at the very end and gave my family a much needed rest after 2days of no sleep bless her heart! I highly recommend Gaffey Home Nursing & Hospice for anyone needing end of life care or even just some help on the home!!! My wife, Penny Hammer, had dealt with Hodgkin’s lymphoma for 13 years. Four chemotherapy regiments and two stem cell transplant over those years had got her into remission and she was feeling good. Then she developed very aggressive uterine cancer. After surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation the cancer kept growing. She finally made the decision to stop all medications and let nature take it’s course. She just felt that treatments and medications were not providing proper quality of life. She made a decision to bring in hospice to help navigate those final days. There was no hesitation in her decision as she picked GAFFEY Home Nursing & Hospice. She had worked with them before through her job at the hospital and knew them to be knowledgeable and caring.
From our first meeting with a nurse we were both put at great ease. She laid things out to let us know what to expect and what GAFFEY would do for us during that time. She had such a positive attitude and warm spirit that we knew we were in good hands. The social worker was there with nurse to help us wrap our heads around what was happening and what we could do. She answered all our questions with such positivity and comfort. Kaitlyn provided personal care and bathing and did so with such gentleness and kindness. Although service was it we’re only need it for about three weeks, we cannot say enough thanks for the services provided.
After my wife passed away I dealt with a lot of grief anxiety. Sarah, through GAFFEY services, provided excellent help to help me get through it. She provided materials and weekly conversations at my home to help me understand that everything I was going through was very normal. Her soft-spoken nature with the knowledge she possess was instrumental in helping me get the reassurances I needed.
From the very top administration to those wonderful people that provide house visits for hospice patients, GAFFEY Home Nursing & Hospice is a class act. I recommend them to anyone who needs this special service.
