o matter how old you are, you can still be a kid in a candy shop. Ralph and Brittany Pehl, owners of Sweetie Me Candy and Gifts, are turning back time at their downtown candy shop in Lena, where they offer sweet and scrumptious treats – Necco wafers, Sky Bars, candy buttons and a whole lot more – begging to tempt that sweet tooth, and have the rest of them grinning from ear to ear. In a sugar daze yet? While kids love candy, the Pehls know that kids at heart enjoy stopping in their shop, too. “Kids are so easily amused and you always get instant gratification from the kids, but when the adults walk around and say, ‘I had this when I was a kid,’ or, ‘I had this in my childhood,’ I think that’s the appeal we like to see and hear,” Ralph said. “That’s what makes it up. Even if they don’t buy anything, it’s entertaining for us.” While they do carry some of the more mainstream candies, much of what customers will find in the bins and tables of treats can’t be found in many stores.

“We want to have about 75 to 80 percent in stock of what you won’t find at Walmart, Target,” Brittany said. “We want to have a huge portion of items that you can’t find anywhere else.” It was something old and something new that helped make Sweetie Me a candy cream come true in the village about 12 miles north of Lake Carroll. Ralph’s mother owned Pehl Trading, an antique dealer that was housed in the space that would later become Sweetie Me. When she downsized and moved out nearly 5 years ago, Ralph and Brittany jumped on the opportunity to realize their candy store dream. They gutted the interior, modernized it and remodeled it. Before selling candy, Ralph was in the jewelry business. He made and sold pieces through the family store, and even made his and Brittany’s wedding bands. “When we started with it, we stuck with our vision,” Ralph said. “It was difficult getting inventory at first, but we always wanted it to be a candy store. This is pretty much what it was from the beginning.” Sweetie Me owners Ralph and Brittany Pehl, and employee Channing Vorwald (left) invite you to stop in and see what the shop has to offer. The Pehls say they’re children of the 1990s, and as such they try to get styles they liked when they were kids. There’s a candy theme for everything: tins of candies shaped in the style of a Super Nintendo controller, a cassette tape and even a magic 8-ball. Gag gifts can even be found on the mint shelves with tins of Middle Child Mints (“Put them in your mouth and forget about them”), Super Genius Mints (“86% good, 14% evil”), as well as other themes, some geared toward giving adults a chuckle. “When the adults are walking around, reminiscing and sharing stories, it just makes them happy remembering how the candies and the games make them feel nostalgic from when they were younger,” Brittany said. “It just brings back a whole moment, and they love it.” Longtime candy manufacturers that have closed in recent years have had their recipes sold to other companies that wanted to revive them for another generation, such as candy buttons, Mary Janes, Black Cows and Necco Wafers. Ralph loves researching and finding new things, and rediscovering old ones, too.

“My favorite thing is when people take one step in our store and they go, ‘Oh my!’ Or ‘Wow! I wasn’t expecting this,’” Ralph said. “For a small-town candy store, we really try to do our best. We try to give a selection that you can’t even find in bigger cities.” Since kids are a big part of the customer base as well, the Pehls are active on the social media, such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, to stay on top of what’s popular these days. “We get a lot of adults that come in here and start reminiscing over the old candies, and we like that,” Ralph said, but they also “added a lot of the novelty candies that seem to be really popular online with the kids these days. We like to say that we have something for everyone.” Need something to wash that candy down with? The shop offers four blends of smoothies, including one with spinach, along with pineapple, banana and pineapple juice; four kinds of old-fashioned malts and six flavors of snow cones, all mixed up behind the counter by the Pehls, or Channing Vorwald, when she’s working. “It makes me feel good knowing that this place makes people feel good,” Vorwald said. “It’s just fun all of the time. When I open a box of orders, it’s like Christmas. It’s so exciting!”

With new items coming in constantly, and plenty of returning favorites, Sweetie Me is a shop that’ll have you coming back for more. “We opened the candy store because we wanted some place to have fun,” Ralph said. “We wanted to have a place that kids could enjoy, and it’s something that my wife and I always wanted because we would have killed for a place like this when we were kids. “We like retro. hat was it like when you turned 50 years old? If you haven’t reached that milestone yet, would you rather not think about it, or is 50 nifty? For Lake Carroll, the time draws near — and the lake’s staff and residents are definitely looking forward to celebrating the lakeside community’s half-century mark in 2022. Already, plans have been made, events lined up and dates set. A half-century. Sounds like long time, doesn’t it? But time flies when you’re having fun, and residents have had a lot of fun in Illinois’ largest private lake community. If you were around when Lake Carroll opened, do you remember turning your AM radio dial to WCFL when Larry Lujack left WLS, or wondering if Records really was John Landecker’s real name? Or for that matter, remember when AM radio used to rock?

The world looked a lot different back then — especially at Lake Carroll. In fact, there was a Carroll, but no lake; there was just several thousand acres of farmland in Carroll County. If you stood in Lake Carroll today and stepped back in time, you’d find corn, countryside and cows on the land that would become home to the lakeside community. The land was at the edge of the driftless area made by Ice Age glaciers and provided sight lines that went for miles in each direction. That all changed in 1972, after land was carved out, reshaped and the lake created, and the first residents moved away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, or seized the opportunity to become the first denizens of a premier lakeside community. (If you want to get an idea of what things looked like, dig up a copy of the August 2021 issue of Lake Lifestyle and check out the article “Putting Lake Carroll on the map.”) Many people have come and gone from Lake Carroll through the years, but current residents will get the chance to be part of something special when 2022 arrives. Turning 50 isn’t just a celebration of Lake Carroll, but a celebration of the people who

made it happen and keep it thriving. Whether you live there or work there, whether you’re a longtime resident or new member, a club member or Clubhouse customer, a campground camper or a craft show vendor, the celebration of a half-century of moments wouldn’t be possible without you. Simply put, you — the person reading this right now — are the reason for Lake Carroll’s success and longevity, whether your contribution is big or small; and it’s much more than just the dues and fees you pay as a member. And what great people you are! I’ve come to know many residents over the past 2 years writing for this magazine, some of you on a first-name basis. It’s been wonderful getting to write about your talents, your interests, your golf game, and what you like and enjoy about this community. What a wonderful melting pot of people who tap into their uniqueness to come together as one community. Lake Carroll has survived and thrived for 50 years, and there’s no doubt residents will be someday celebrate a century of life on the lake.

The Lake Carroll staff and anniversary committees have already put together a host of events to celebrate the once-in-a-lake’s lifetime milestone — and we’re not talking just one big bash on the lake’s birthday, May 14, 1972; they’ve planned out a whole year of activities. The fun is going to last all year. Literally, from ball drop to ball drop.

Come celebrate

Hours before the 50th year kicks off, the first celebration will take place at Plumtree Lodge with a New Year’s Eve Bash. Open tubing out on the hill will be from 6 to 9 p.m. if there’s enough snow on the ground, and the kids don’t have to stay awake until midnight to see a celebratory ball drop: They have their own celebration at 9 p.m. Highlighting the entertainment is Better Late Than Never, a local cover band that’s also penned some original songs you might have heard on local radio. The band has played a wide genre of music for decades. They’ll kick off their set at 8 p.m. Check out their newest song, “The Road Runs On,” about the aftermath of experiencing love and breakup at a young age. Find the band on Facebook and YouTube. Tickets are $25 for members 21 and older, $10 for those younger. The cost includes unlimited tubing, hors d’oeuvres, New Year’s novelty items, and a midnight champagne toast. The lodge’s bar will be open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Register on golakecarroll.com through the events calendar. That’s just the start of the fun. Lake Carroll’s Women’s Club will have a Sweetheart Dance on Feb. 19, the Yacht Club will host “Robber’s Bingo” on March 19, and the Prairie Club invites you to help make the community cleaner with a Clean Up Day on April 23 – the day after Earth Day. Legacy Day will be on the anniversary date, May 14, with an open house in the Members Only Room at the Clubhouse. If you’ve ever been curious about Lake Carroll’s backstories, they’ll be shared during this event, and notable members will be honored and remembered. Later that night, comedy performances will take place at Candlelight Inn. The Fishing Club will have its annual Kids Fishing Derby on June 18, where youngsters can spend time with their families to catch a fish, cook out, enjoy games and win neat prizes. Lake Carroll Fest will span 3 days, from July 29-31, with live music, food, games, fireworks and a parade. The Big Cup golf scramble also will take place. National Night Out is Aug. 2, and residents and their families who either served in the military or are/were first responders will be honored. On Aug. 28, a car show and a car parade rolls in, and just a few days later the annual Labor Day Bash will be put on by the Campground Social Club with food, music and a bonfire. The fun continues into the fall: The Ski Club will host October Fest on Oct. 15 with beer, brats and live music; and a Turkey Trot 5K and fun run-and-walk will loop around the lake on Nov. 19. And just like it began, so too will it end: with a ball drop.

The lake will ring out 50 and ring in 51 on Dec. 31, with a New Year’s Eve Gala; put on your best formal wear and enjoy dueling pianos, food, and a champagne toast. hen you fire up the grill for a sizzling steak or a juicy burger, or you snap a piece of jerky in half from Krogman Homegrown Meats, rest assured that what’s on your plate hasn’t strayed very far from Lake Carroll. For more than a half-decade, the Krogmans have raised Duroc and large white hogs and Angus cattle, both grain-fed from local feed, on their farm between Shannon and Freeport. The farm has evolved from old-fashioned technologies to the latest in livestock care. They even filled a small lagoon in and installed solar panels to source natural energy. But one thing hasn’t changed: a dedication to delicious cuts of meat. The operation expanded more than a year ago to include a small store attached to the farmhouse. Prior to that, they had sold their meat wholesale for 8 years, but when they expanded their business it did more than just open the doors to a store, it opened the doors to meeting new faces, and couple said it’s been a thrill to meet and — pun intended — chew the fat with customers.

“We had been doing wholesale halves and quarters to people, and we kind of got to talking about how not everyone has a deep freezer, and not everyone has a family big enough to where they want a whole quarter,” Julia said. “It’s kind of a lot to buy all at once if you’ve never tried it. So we thought we’d try the retail end of it and reach out to local people who don’t have the exposure to farm-raised meats.” Customers can also order meat at the farm’s website, krogmanhomegrownmeats.com. Chad and Julia are relatively new to their land, but not to farming. They grew up on farms, and when they got married, one of their dreams was to have a farm of their own. The dream came true in 2015 when they purchased 7 acres with a two-story house, and buildings that needed a little TLC.

“It gave us the opportunity to start with pigs inside an older facility before we built our first hog barn,” Chad said. “Then we built our second hog barn this year. If we wanted to stay in business, we needed to upgrade.” At any given time, there are between 10 to 15 head of cattle in a pen, as well as 400 to 800 pigs in two buildings. Chad tends to the farm in the morning, and Julia does the same in the afternoon. On top of it all, Chad also operates a hog-hauling business, and Julia homeschools their three young boys, Hezekiah, Titus and Brayden.” “We feel blessed to work together, even if it’s not all day, every day, it’s at least somewhat,” Julia said. “The kids love to come out to the store and say ‘Hi’ to people, learn to count change, and things like that.” Ribeyes and tenderloins are quite popular with customers, along with briskets and beef sticks. The sirloin top roast is another hot seller; instead of taking the tip and making it a tougher steak, it’s left as a roast, which customers like to smoke, Julia said. The tri-tip cut, available as a whole roast or in 4-ounce cuts, is one not found in many stores, but the Krogmans have it: It’s a triangular-shaped top notch cut of meat that is juicy, tender and versatile with a rich beef flavor great for grilling steaks. “It’s not a common cut and it’s hard to find,” Julia said. “It’s one that people like. It’s the tip of the sirloin and can either be cut into steaks or left as a roast, and a lot of people smoke it.”

One of the newest additions to the store’s freezers is the pitmaster-blend patty, a specialty grind that consists of chuck, brisket and short rib. The marbling and fat in those makes it really tender, juicy and flavorful, Julia said, and it can even be made into meat loaf. Also available are sliced deli meats, brats, bacon and breakfast sausages that have “an old-fashioned sausage taste to it,” Julia said, “A real classic flavor.” “We’ve met people from lawyers to marketing professionals to grandpas and grandmas who remember farm-raised meat that they haven’t had it in a long time,” Julia said. “Some are from the suburbs or even downtown Chicago, and some of them live right out here. It’s been interesting seeing a whole spectrum of people.” “It’s been a good way to know people since we’re not from the community,” Chad added. “It’s a good way to get to know and interact with them.” Even when the meat is processed, it doesn’t stray far from the farm. It never even leaves Stephenson County as it heads to AJ’s Lena Maid Meats in Lena, aged for 14 days before being cut, and then sent back to the Krogmans’ freezers for sale. No hormones or unnecessary antibiotics are added to their meats. Cows are pasture-raised and grain-finished, and the meat dry-aged to give cuts appealing marbling and tenderness. Hogs are finished with a nutritionistapproved grain diet for tenderness and texture.

here’s a lot of creativity in Lake Carroll, and the community’s farmers markets and craft shows give people a chance to tap into their talents while giving shoppers a place where they can pick up some homegrown and handmade gifts. The markets also let people catch up with old friend and meet new neighbors. The Lake Carroll Women’s Club hosted a craft fair Nov. 6 at the Clubhouse where vendors set up tables and invited people to stop and shop. Several offered holiday-themed items just in time for Christmas, while others cleared out their remaining fall merchandise. Some had items whipped up in their workshop or cooked up in their kitchen. Some brought some familiar favorites while others tried out something new. Jewelry, home and outdoor decor, quilts, artificial flower arrangements, health and beauty products, the show had a little something for everyone. The Women’s Club also held a bake sale, and filled the tables with delicious dishes and filled the air with savory scents during the 5-hour event.
