n his more than 20 years as Lake Carroll’s golf course professional, Jason Hill has seen a lot of young kids go from struggling to lug a golf bag to teaching their own children how to get a better grip on the game. But whether they’re tykes with tees or teens on the greens, Hill and his team aim to make sure they have fun at Junior Golf Camp. “Our goal is to make sure it’s fun. We’re trying to get kids — especially the little ones — to relate a fun time with golf, which maybe they’ll want to migrate toward

later on down the road,” Hill said. “We don’t want to make it overly instructional and boring for them.” Who knows? Maybe one of the kids will go on to win a club championship or be part of a winning Ryder Cup team at Lake Carroll’s course — or even find success beyond the lake’s links. That’s always exciting to see, Hill said, especially knowing that he and his camp crew had a hand in helping them develop their skills. The annual camp brings out players from ages 6 to 15 to learn about the game at Lake Carroll’s golf course. This year’s camps took place during five different 3-day stretches from May to July, with 1-hour sessions each day. Participants attend one 3-day session and are put into smaller groups in order provide them with personalized instruction. Those ages 6 to 9 stick to the basics of the game — hitting and swinging — while those ages 10 to 15 learn more advanced skills, such as the mechanics of making the best shot.

“It’s a sport that everyone can kinda play,” Declan added. “When you get older you can do two sports, like if you do baseball you can do golf.” Declan also took part in the camp last year, but this is Cole’s first time. Learning what he learned last year has helped Declan understand the sport a little better this time around — not to mention getting show off a little in front of his brother. A big takeaway for Declan this year was learning the proper grip: “It’s important because you can hit the ball a lot better,” he said. Sometimes, players also learn they have to walk the walk when it comes to golf. “On the way to the driving range, our coaches

drove in the golf cart and we had to walk with our putters,” Cole said. Why the legwork? Declan wasn’t sure, but he said, “I think they wanted us to get the exercise for our legs so we can hit better.” When Hill first started running the camps, about 30 people took part. That number has grown over the years, and topped out at about 160 during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, when more people flocked to Lake Carroll to get away from the big cities. That number has dipped back down a bit this year, with about 125 participants — still more than the nearly 75 that was being averaged in the few years before the pandemic.

Hill’s happy to see more young people interested in golf, especially during a time when it’s seen a decline in participation nationwide, and he hopes they’ll continue to stay on course with the game. Retaining kids’ interest in golf is the next step for Hill and his staff, and they hope to see camp participants come back for more in-depth lessons down the road — and even if they do lose interest for a time, the game will still be there for them when they get older. “We get a lot of kids that do these camps and then get a lot of individual lessons down the road,” Hill said. “We’ve had a lot of kids play on high school teams and have gone on to play at sectionals, playing at state, and playing in college. We’ve had some successes.” Hill has three assistants who give lessons during Junior Golf Camp. One of them, Logan Rohr, was hired to work in the pro shop in mid-June, and despite being new to the job, he was happy to help out when the camp came around. “I enjoyed meeting the people and all of the kids, from the first day to the last day, just seeing their game progress,” he said. “They liked getting on the course, and it was fun for them to actually get out there and see the entire course and hit their drivers. A lot of the time, that’s all they want to do, hit the driver all day long.” Golfers always shoot for a new low, but Hill hopes for a new high — in the number of kids interested in the game. “Having the kids around is great,” Hill said. “If you starting bringing the kids out, that starts bringing the parents and grandparents out more. In the long run, it’s good for everything because it gives the parents and grandparents more of an opportunity to play golf, too, which is good. We’re drawing more people out on the golf course.”

eing a “marina girl” at Lake Carroll isn’t always easy work: There’s fuel to handle, money to make, and pounds and pounds — and pounds — of bags of ice to haul around the docks. All that time on the clock at the dock goes by a little faster when the duo doing the work are more than just “marina girls” — they’re sisters. Shannon siblings Macy and Mallory Misiewicz are the smiling faces that greet customers when they stop by the marina on their way to some summertime fun on the lake. Pumping fuel, selling snacks, hooking people up with bait … there’s plenty of work to keep them busy, but there are some fringe benefits, too. The pair get to see friends and neighbors and meet new people — and it’s not every job where you can go to work and work on your tan at the same time.

Conversation, the sisters say, is key to good customer service, and it’s also helped Mallory during her teen years. “It’s helped build my communication skills,” she said. “Getting to talk to people has helped a lot, and working with my friends has, too. Having good social skills is going to help a lot, because you’re going to have to talk with customers. When you sit there for 5-10 minutes filling their boats, it’s always good to start a good conversation.” It’s not hard to find something to talk about. There’s the shared love of lake life or comparing notes with residents who may have something in common with them. “There’s a lot of people that travel around the world, which we can relate to because we’ve been to several different countries,” Mallory said. “It’s a good conversation starter.” There’s also catching up with fellow college students to kick off a conversation. Macy has run into a lot of fellow UI students on the job, she said. There’s also the occasional Iowa, Northwestern or Wisconsin student, which makes for some friendly rivalry.

Whether they’re looking for food, fuel or a friendly face, Lake Carroll’s West Marina is the place boaters set course for — especially on a sunny day.

“Working with my friends, we always like to check out all of the cute boys that are around our age,” Macy, 20, said. “I think it’s the best job ever just because I can get a good tan.” Macy, a student at the University of Illinois, has worked at the marina for 5 years, and this summer is her first as its manager. This is second year at the marina for Mallory, 17, and having an older sister for a boss isn’t rife with sibling rivalry — quite the contrary. “If I ever have a question about anything, or if I’m confused about something, it’s easy to go to Macy because she’s been here for 5 years,” Mallory said. “She knows exactly what to do in any situation.” Macy encouraged Mallory to apply for the job a couple of years ago. “She would always hype the job up, and I thought it would be fun,” Mallory said. “Macy’s pretty chill, so I don’t have to worry too much. She basically told me that I had to fill boats up with gas and do concessions. When I first started, that’s exactly what I did.”

For Macy, her role as manager has shown her what a juggling act it can be to be in charge. “I didn’t give my old manager enough credit for dealing with making a schedule and dealing with a whole lot of different personalities,” Macy said. “It’s a lot to take on.”

“There’s a lot of U of I people out here,” Macy said. “There are also a lot of people here who go to some of the other Big Ten schools, so it’s always fun to start a conversation with them, either supporting them in where they’re going to school or starting an argument,” she added with a chuckle. But as fun as the job can be, there’s a time to take work seriously, too. Working at the marina isn’t as easy as some people may think. Keeping watercraft fueled up for fun on the lake is more than just pumping gas. The pumps have to go through safety checks, and each worker has to have an Illinois underground storage tank certification, which requires them to take a written test each year to retain their certification. Meanwhile, managers, like Macy, have to take a more comprehensive test. They have to know all the nuances of the system and be able to train others in their proper use.

Keeping customers satisfied is important for Lake Carroll, too, with money from the Marina invested back into the community. “Some people may think we’re just people that are out here to fill their boats with gas, but a lot goes into that,” Macy said. “We have to be trained, we have to be certified in order to even fill gas, we have to know all of the different piping that goes into all of it and know the entire system. If something were to go wrong, we need to be able to recognize that. Especially with gas on the water, you have to be aware of everything.” Mallory Misiewicz inspects a fuel pump at the marina. Macy is part of a seven-person crew at the marina. She took on the role after the former manager, Gina Zink, left. One of the first things she had to figure out was how to juggle each worker’s schedule, especially when it came to vacations, which proved to be tricky at times. “I didn’t give my old manager enough credit for dealing with making a schedule and dealing with a whole lot of different personalities,” Macy said. “It’s a lot to take on. Everybody has a whole bunch of different schedules. What can you do? I’m not going to tell high-schoolers that they can’t go on your family vacation with your parents.” Major holidays, such as Memorial Day and the Independence Day, pretty much require all hands on deck as much as possible because of how busy things can get, and that involves a lot of legwork — running from store to boat with drinks, ice cream, candy, 2-cycle oil and the orange flags required for the boats, not to mention the constant toting of all those 21-pound bags of ice. There’s also a lot of “fill ‘er up” requests to tend to, and there’s plenty of those at holidays, too. The marina’s tank can hold up to 10,000 gallons, and it’s not unusual to go through 2,000 gallons on a Fourth of July weekend. “You’ll go down there and fill the boat, and then you’ll have people who’ll say they want ice cream or ice,” Macy said. “We’ll have to run up, go grab it, and run back down.” Even with all the running, the sisters still take time to slow down and appreciate the job. They catch up with long-time residents and have met a lot of newcomers, and know many customers on a first-name basis. “I’ve valued a lot of the conversations I’ve had with the members here because there are people from all over,” Macy said. “It’s interesting to hear about what they do and how they got to be who they are. They’re really open about sharing everything. A lot of them really enjoy the community out here, and it’s nice to see, even with this small-town area, that these bigcity folks enjoy coming out here.”

t the intersection of the past and present are a pair of river cities that have witnessed their share of our nation’s history, as America’s story unfolded along its highways, railroads, and one of its mightiest rivers. Clinton, Iowa, and Fulton, Illinois, could be summed up in a few words — two towns, two states, one river — but there’s much more to them than that. The pair of towns often referred to as the River Cities offer a wide variety of dining options, shopping, recreation, culture, history, and oneof-a-kind destinations for the whole family. The River Cities owe a lot to America’s transportation system, whether by land or by water, from the backbone of industrial transportation, our rail system; to the iconic Lincoln Highway; to the river that they straddle, the

Mississippi. They’ve helped them grow and continue to provide opportunities today. The Lincoln Highway, considered the first trans-national motor route from coast-to-coast, crosses America’s chief northsouth river at one of the two traffic bridges that connect the River Cities, and paralleling much of the that highway’s distance from Chicago to San Francisco is the Union Pacific’s Overland Route rail line, which crosses its own bridge over the river. U.S. Route 30, another coast-to-coast pageXX highway, crosses another bridge between the two towns.

Being situated along a major river and crossing paths with what were once major highways has helped both cities’ business and industrial bases through the years. Lumber was king in many river cities during the 1800s, including Clinton, which like other cities along the river, used the waterway to transport lumber and grain. At one time, the lumber industry was so successful that Clinton could boast of having the most millionaires per capita in America for a few years during the 1880s. That, in turn, helped spur philanthropy and growth in the area, and several locations throughout the two towns bear the names of local industry leaders. The lumber industry is nearly gone from the area now, but its legacy lives on, in part through the Clinton LumberKings baseball team and the city’s Sawmill Museum, and the Mississippi is still a vital part of the grain industry as it carries barges up and down the river. Area industry today now is led by Archer-Daniels-Midland and its co-generation plant that burns coal and leftover corn for energy, as well as CustomPak, which produces hundreds of different plastic products. Clinton is divided into several business districts (look for the color-coded signs throughout town): The Lincolnway and Mill Creeks districts are on the west side of town and offer several big-box stores, restaurants and other businesses; the Lyons District — named after the old town of Lyons, which merged with Clinton in 1895 — is on the northern part of town and is home to dining options and an eclectic variety of businesses; and the Downtown District at the heart of the city features a variety of shopping and dining options. The Riverfront District is home to riding and bike paths, boat docks and parks. Both Clinton and Fulton have walking and biking paths along the river, built on levees that were constructed after a devastating flood in 1965. As for Fulton, the smaller of the two cities, it prides itself on its Dutch heritage, which also is shared by nearby Morrison. The downtown — which is home to a number of businesses — is also host to the city’s annual Dutch Days Festival the first weekend of May, where plenty of arts, crafts, food and more celebrate the city’s Dutch heritage. That heritage is on display yearround in the town’s de Immigrant Windmill. The nearly 10-story windmill was built from components made in the Netherlands and is fully operational. To get to the River Cities from Lake Carroll, take state Route 73 to Lanark, U.S. Route 52 West to Mount Carroll, state Route 78 south for 6 miles, west on Argo Fay Road 8 miles to Thomson, and state Route 84 south to Fulton. Once in Fulton, state Route 136 crosses the Mississippi River into Clinton and Iowa. While there are plenty of things to do in the area, we’ve narrowed it down 10, but we invite you visit the area and see all that it has to offer ...

You won’t have a hard time finding this attraction: It’s a steampowered paddleboat docked along Clinton’s riverfront. Built in 1935, this two-deck tug once worked pushing barges for the Ohio River for the Ohio River Company, until it came to Clinton in 1966 as a floating theater. The main stage, in front of a 217-seat theater, is named after Clinton native Lillian Russell, who was a popular actress and singer during the turn of the 20th century. This summer’s shows include stage versions of the movies “Sister Act,” “The Wedding Singer” and “Calendar Girls,” as well as the Rogers and Hammerstein musical “State Fair,” and performances based on the songs of Tony award-winners John Kander and Fred Ebb from “The World Goes Round.” Ticket prices for each show are $25 for adults 18 and older, $23 for seniors 60 years and older, and $18 for children under 18.

Clinton was home to several minor league baseball teams for 83 years and saw nearly 300 players make it to the major leagues during that time. In 2021, the LumberKings became part of the Prospect League, a 16-team collegiate wood bat circuit with teams spread across the Midwest from eastern Missouri to western Pennsylvania. Clinton is part of the Great River Division of the league’s Western Conference, along with Illinois-based teams from Burlington, Quincy and Normal. The LumberKings opened their second season in the Prospect League on June 1, taking on the Normal Cornbelters. The season runs until Aug. 6 before a week of league playoffs begin. Giveaways and post-game concerts are part of each home game’s festivities. Fireworks are, too, and the annual July 4 home game concludes with a grand showing of lights up in the sky.

De Immigrant Windmill

Windmills have long been an important part of Dutch culture, and one of them made its very own piece movement to Fulton to be the city’s pride and joy. Components of the windmill were manufactured in the Netherlands and transported to Fulton, where it was assembled by Dutch craftsmen before it opened for visitors in 2000. Standing at nearly 100 feet tall, the windmill is fully operational and can churn out flour: stone-ground buckwheat, corn, rye, and wheat flours are all manufactured there and sold in the gift shop. Depending on the wind, the stones can grind approximately 1 bushel of grain every 10 minutes. Inside the Windmill Cultural Center, visitors can learn about the history of windmills and how they work. There is no admission cost to visit the windmill, but donations are appreciated for its maintenance and operations.

Eagle Point Park

It features unique views and structures, along with playground equipment, sand volleyball and basketball courts, and a disc golf course. Drivers, bikers and walkers can roam along a serpentine road throughout the park with plenty of hills and curves. Attractions include a long limestone foot bridge over a ravine, as well as a castle-like stone tower building where visitors can ascend and get a view of the park and the Mighty Mississippi. The park’s lodge, designed with a wooden motif, has an overlook of the river, and is available for event rental. Eagle Point’s symbol, located just beyond its front gates, is a concrete eagle atop an obelisk, built in 1983 by local artists George and Milton Kramer.

Heritage Canyon

The canyon’s layout was built by Harold and Thelma Wierenga in 1967, and has been owned by the City of Fulton since 2005. Tours are self-guided, marked by numbered yellow arrows on brick paths. The canyon’s church building is available for small weddings, seating up to 25 people.

The telephone has come along way in the past 150 years, from models cranked by hand to rotary dials spun by fingers to palm-sized computers, and a Fulton museum will take visitors on a tour through the evolution of a communication revolution. The S&S Telephone Museum has a display of different types of telephones, phone booths and internal crossbars used to send messages near and far. Housed in a former telephone company building, the collection of communication is a lifelong love of Larry Salter and his son, Eric — whose 12-year-old daughter, Kaitlyn, also helps with curating the collection. Many phones on display still work, and are hooked up to one of the museum’s switchboards or switching systems.

The Sawmill Museum

Visitors can learn a thing or two about how logs were transformed into lumber that not only helped build an industry, but an entire nation. At one time, Clinton was hailed as “The Lumber Capital of the World,” and the museum helps explain how it grew to live up to its name, led chiefly by the Mississippi River Logging Company, which formed in 1870. The museum features vintage machinery, and for the kids, a colorful water-play table exhibit that tells the story of lumber and its place in Clinton’s history through interactive, hands-on action. The table lets guests guide a boat down a miniature Mississippi River, where they can manipulate the water flow and navigate the boats by islands and dams. Kids can play in the museum’s lumberjack camp play area, and a working sawmill area gives people an up-close look at the lumber industry. Visitors can schedule a sawyer demonstration by calling the museum in advance. Admission cost is $6 for adults 13 years and older, $5 for children from 4 to 12, and free for those 3 or younger.

Communities still have a lot on their calendars for the final full month of summer, when kids are still on vacation and before autumn falls in our lap on Sept. 22. FALLSPORTS August kicks off high schools’ fall sports season, and that means students will strap on their helmets, lace up their tennies, polish their clubs, and serve up another season of competition. The season begins in the middle of the month with football for the boys, volleyball for the girls, and golf and cross country for boys and girls at Eastland High School. Each of the Cougars’ six programs are shooting to perform well in competition among their Northwest Upstate Illini Conference foes and in state postseason play. The Cougars’ volleyball squad advanced all the way to the Class 1A Sweet 16 round last season and finished with a record of 28-11-1. The team also won the regional championship last year for the sixth time in eight seasons, and will look to improve on that this year. The season begins with a nonconference road match 5:30 p.m. Aug. 23. in Oregon. There’s only one way to go for Eastland-Pearl City’s football team, and that’s up. The Wildcatz struggled last season with a 1-8 record against always-tough competition in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference, and hope to rebound from their worst season since 2005. The co-op’s “Route 73 Rumble” rivalry with Lena-Winslow kicks off the season at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26 in Lena. Eastland’s cross country runners are looking for additional accolades this season as well. Senior Delaney Wilhelm qualified for the sectional meet last year with a Top 30 finish in

When it comes to state tournament success, football is the most successful sport among the schools playing in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference. The schools in the conference have won 26 state football championships in the past 50 years, making it one of the top small school leagues in Illinois.

The football year is shaping up to be another exciting time, as both Lena-Winslow and Polo defend state championships from a year ago. The Panthers of Le-Win won their second straight 1A title last season, which was their fifth in school history, and the Marcos of Polo went undefeated to repeat as 8-man champions a year ago. Along with Eastland-Pearl City, which is Lake Carroll’s “home” football team, neighboring schools Le-Win, Forreston, Stockton and West Carroll play full 11-man football; while additional neighboring schools Polo, Milledgeville, River Ridge and Aquin Central Catholic of Freeport play a modified 8-man game — football with two less linemen and one less back — due to low enrollment numbers at their schools. Tentatively, the football season kicks off for the area for most schools on Friday, Aug. 26. Some schools are playing their season-openers on Saturday. Changes to a team’s schedule may be made over the course of the season due to an ongoing shortage of football officials — some teams in Illinois have moved season-openers to

regionals, and senior Hudson Groezinger led the Cougars’ boys squad last postseason with a top 50 finish in regionals. The shotgun start to the running season is at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Rocket Run at Centennial Park in Rock Falls. On the golf course, Eastland’s boys squad will have a new look to its lineup this season after last year’s senior-laden squad performed well in postseason play, finishing in second place at regionals. Kellen Henze led last year’s squad with a ninth-place finish at sectionals and just missed a top 50 finish in the Class 1A state meet. Belle Lego, Eastland’s top placing golfer in the girls regional, returns to lead the Cougars to overall improvement this season. ike her fellow travelers, Stephanie Stremp has a favorite go-to travel cup, but it’s not one she just bought off-the-shelf — that wouldn’t be her cup of tea. Stephanie would rather say her tumbler is a cup of me. That’s because Stremp’s cup has her personality written all over it, and her name too. It’s colorful, it’s glittery, it’s got a shark sticker from a Bahamas trip on one side and “Stephanie” emblazoned on the other. The tumbler’s distinctive design should come as no surprise though, since she’s the one who had a hand in designing it. It’s just one of the pieces the parttime Lake Carroll resident has put her creative touch on for her business, Driftless Zone, named for the surrounding area’s rolling hills and picturesque scenery.

A cup or a keychain, magnets, wood signs, even a pen — just about anything can be a canvas for her creativity, and Stremp enjoys taking someone’s idea and turning the ordinary into something special at her arts and craft and home decor business. “The cool thing is that you can customize them,” Stremp said. “I can customize things to people’s likes, occupations, seasons, sports and teams; the possibilities are endless in what you can do.” What helps many of Stremp’s creations shine is the process she uses: an epoxy coating combined with colors and glitter and protected by a clear plastic coating. Her part-time business grew out of a part-time passion and a Cricut machine, which can cut shapes and designs from paper, vinyl, card stock and other materials. She started off making simple crafts, but then she wanted to take it the next level and make things that were a Cricut above the rest. She did some online research and learned about making things with epoxy molds. As with most beginners, Stremp’s first epoxy efforts were a little rough, but the more she practiced the better she got. She’s gotten pretty good in the past 3 years, but even today she’s still learning new and interesting ways to tap into her creativity. “I learned by watching videos and just doing it,” Stremp said. “My first cups were bumpy and lumpy, and I just learned to take off excess epoxy, and doing extra layers over the glitter to smooth things out over time to get more of that

smoother finish.” Today, she’s polished her skills and has found a following with customers who like what they see, especially the travel cups, which have been a big seller. She makes them at her full-time residence in Plainfield, and when she started off, she marketed products to her fellow teachers at the preschool she works at in town. When the tumblers caught on with teachers and they started asking for more, Stremp decided to offer her wares to another group she knew: her fellow Lake Carroll residents. She started selling them at the summer farmers market 3 years ago, and business picked up. “I love making stuff for the markets because it’s more about what I like to create and what I think people will like,” Stremp said. “I love the custom orders, too, but it’s what they want.” Lake Carroll residents aren’t the only ones picking up her handiwork at the market; visitors are too, especially ones looking for a souvenir of the lake. An unofficial slogan for the lake has become one of her favorites to incorporate into products: “Lake Carroll: Unsalted, shark free,” which graces several of her pieces. She’s also recently added cups for golf lovers in the community, and they’ve sold well, too. “When I make stuff for Lake Carroll, I think about the people here and what they might like and go with that,” Stremp said. “I keep doing those because people really love those. It’s such a good golf community here, and so I added the golf cups.”

She’ll also offer items on “spring cleaning” groups both around Lake Carroll and Plainfield. Each tumbler comes with up to two glitter colors and an image; extras can be added for a fee. Destination cups have been another big seller lately, but sometimes it’s tough to do a large order by herself. That’s when the one-woman show turns into a family project, with son Ethan, helping out — even getting a cut of the action. It was a good day on the greens

for Zach Billingsley, who scored a hole-in-one July 1 at Lake Carroll’s golf course. This wasn’t Zach’s first time achieving the feat — and he may have had some help from some good luck charms. He scored his first hole-inone in Michigan on May 28, using the same ball and club and wearing the same shirt. Zach is married to Charlotte Buettner and is the son-in-law of Larry and Maryann Buettner, who shared the photos with us.
