Organizers of an upcoming celebration at Lake Carroll want their fest to be the best, so mark your calendar because it’s gonna take three days to celebrate it.

Lake Carroll residents — and the public — are invited to Lake Carroll Fest from Friday-Sunday, July 29-31, at Candlelight at Lake Carroll, 29-11 Ironwood Blvd., to celebrate Lake Carroll’s 50th anniversary Details are still being worked out, but organizers promise that the three-day event will be a weekend “packed full of fun for the whole family.” There’ll be live music, food, inflatable rides and fireworks. Lake Carroll Fest is just one of several events that organizers behind the golden jubilee have been working on. The Lake Carroll Women’s Club is off to the races, and you’re invited to join them.

On Saturday, May 7, residents can enjoy some southern hospitality during Dancing at the Derby, a night of food, fun, fancy footwork, and for your viewing pleasure, the Kentucky Derby — and it’s all for a good cause. Proceeds from the night will go to charities supported by the Lake Carroll Women’s Club, a non-profit, philanthropic organization that works to develop intellectual opportunities, social fellowship, community service and charitable endeavors. Dancing at the Derby will get out of the starting gate at 5 p.m. at Plumtree Lodge, 200 Plumtree Drive, when heavy southern fare will be served — hors d’oeuvres specially created by Donna Lessman. At 5:46, guests can watch the Kentucky Derby while enjoying what organizers are calling a "Special Surprise Derby Cocktail." At 6, DJ Ron Hennings will give people something to dance to. The evening also will feature an open bar, silent auction, games and most outlandish hat contest. Fun and fashionable couture is encouraged — hats for the ladies and bowties for the beaus. The family that creates together has fun together, and some crafty kin in Lake Carroll are having lots of fun creating colorful and clever creations for their customers

very so often, a small flock of Pellikans make their way to Lake Carroll, but they’re not perched on a dock or a rock — instead, these birds of a feather are creating together at their home away from home. Denise, Alex and Geri Pellikan are the trio of talent behind Crafty Pellikan’s, a part-time family project that sells arts and crafts decor. When the family — mom Denise, daughter Alex, and daughter-in-law Geri — want to get away from Chicago, a trip is in order to the Pellikan Playhouse, as they like to call their part-time

abode in Lake Carroll, where they come up with one-of-a-kind stained glass and wood pieces. The creative process is a bond the three love to share with each other, and with their customers. Like many aspiring artists, it takes time to perfect the process, but with each piece they make, their confidence grows, Denise said. “It’s not practice makes perfect.” Denise said. It’s perfect practice makes perfect. You learn along the way. The first couple of things I did were not all that great, but you’ll sit there and then you’ll go, ‘This is how you do it — Ah!’ It’s a work in progress, and it’s getting better.”

Denise Pellikan’s first stained glass piece (shown here) stuck to the basics, but it led to a love of creating more colorful works in recent years.

Denise does the stained glass pieces, and Alex and Geri are the duo behind the wood works — Alex comes up with the pieces and Geri comes up with the designs. Denise’s husband, Mark, also helps out when needed. “Mom is the heart of everything,” Geri said. “She’s the motivator. She comes up with some random ideas, and the both of us are like, ‘That sounds like fun.’” This isn’t Denise’s first foray into the arts. She recently retired after teaching elementary school music classes for 38 years in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood, and eventually swapped the performance arts for the visual arts with her Pellikan partners. Her instruments these days are glass cutters and paint brushes. Shortly after retirement, Denise became intrigued by stained glass art, and took a class on it. It didn’t take her long to get hooked. She also took a class on designing decorative garden stakes. After her first stained glass creation, a small panel with

greens and yellows, she took to Pinterest to find other ideas and inspiration. She also combined her interest in decorative stakes and stained glass and began creating stained glass yard ornaments. The ideas just kept coming, and tapping into her creativity became a breeze. With a notion for motion, Denise started turning bicycle wheels into yard art, attaching glass pieces to the spokes. When Mother Nature takes the wheels for a spin, they transform into eye-catching colorful creations. She uses more yellow pieces in her designs because of the way it catches the sunlight. It took a little work before she got on a roll with her wheels, Denise said. “Doing the wheel, I was working on it and thought, “This doesn’t look good. What am I doing?’” she said. “Then I finished it and thought, ‘This is pretty cool!’” Starting out, the Pellikans’ earliest creations ended up as gifts for family and friends. They designed chiropractor Caduceus symbols for one of Denise’s nephews.

Other gifts were inspired by hot air balloons, horses, and one resembled the Tree of Life in Bahrain. Denise’s favorite design is a four-panel “family tree,” made out of an old window found during a road trip. One panel has a pelican, another has an “A” for Alex, another with an “M” and “D” for Mark and Denise, and the fourth has the first letters of Geri, her husband Nicholas, and Mark and Denise’s grandchildren, Phillip and Lucca. “We have a lot of fun, no matter what we do,” Denise said. “It gives me something to do since retirement.” Alex and Geri work more with wood, but sometimes they’ll help with Denise’s stained glass pieces.

Alex said she enjoys working with wood, turning out pieces such as charcuterie boards, wall decor, and table tops. One of her favorite creations was the bar top for the wet bar in their garage. Like Denise, the creative process was a learning curve for Alex, but she’s got it straightened it out now. The first time she worked with epoxy for one of her projects, she hadn’t quite got the hang of it. That project, which used wood from Johnson Hardwoods in rural Mount Carroll, “was so much fun,” Alex said, “especially with trying to figure out how to epoxy.” Alex also enjoyed making a large Puerto Rican flag for Geri’s grandparents.

She used several boards to make the five red and white stripes, blue triangle and single white star, burned the surface of each board, and then painted it. Geri enjoys working with wood burning tools. One of her favorite creations was also one of her first: a bottle opener that featured Goku, a central character from the popular Japanese anime cartoon “Dragonball Z,” in a “super saiyan” fight pose. Her skill as the wood wordsmith has her tapping into typefaces and talent to use her tools to create pieces that often feature whimsical words of wisdom. She’ll start out with a sketch that she’ll trace on to the wood with carbon paper before she fires up the woodburning tools. Geri likes the challenge, especially when she’s working on custom creations. “When they’re custom gifts, I like doing it,” Geri said. “I enjoy it more, because it has more meaning to it, I feel.”

The Pellikans enjoy the process of creating custom works, and welcome people to reach out to them if they have a certain something in mind. “If people ask me to do strange [designs] for them, I’ll do them,” Denise said. That goes for Geri and Alex as well, said Mom. Several of their works are available for sale, mostly through their Facebook page. They have also made appearances at the summer farmers markets in Lake Carroll, as well as the annual craft show in November. They also plan to set up at Lanark’s Jingle Fest craft show in the days before Christmas at Eastland High School. For Denise, it’s not about making money, “I’m just into it to have fun,” she said. “I like to do it.” And there’s one other reason she likes to turn her inspirations into inventory — one that’s practical side for this Pellikan: “I can’t have it all in my house.”

hen it comes to lakes, there’s a lot to soak in. Environmentally, they help manage the water flow and act as a natural purification system. Fish and other aquatic life call them home. Their water gives life to plants and animals. Lake are also a great spot to have fun — a place to dive in, skip a stone or skim across the water on a wakeboard, somewhere to enjoy a leisurely boat ride or cast a line for the catch of the day. Even if you do little more than just look at them, they’re a sight to behold, their shores a perfect place to sit as you gaze across the placid water, relaxing to the rhythm of a gentle current, a lake’s lullaby lulling you to sleep. Life would be a lot different without these bodies of water that dot our landscape from sea to shining sea — but lakes aren’t an island unto themselves. They’re just one member of Mother Nature’s family, and at Lake Carroll, man and matriarch have worked together for decades to maintain one of the most scenic private lakes in Illinois. But where did it start, and how does it keep going? Just over 50 years ago, machines took on the monumental task of carving a lake out of the land, digging, dumping, redirecting waterways. Today, people still have a hand in keeping this body of water healthy, but they couldn’t do it without nature’s help.

The process starts a few miles west of Lake Carroll, where farmers have moved their own soil over time to create an expedient system of water flow. Those streams flow and grow as they move through culverts, under roads, beneath bridges big and small throughout the country. Nature also takes its course, at the bottom of steep stretches of land where streams lead into the lake as well. Three large streams feed the most water to the lake: from the north through “Three Tubes,” east through the East Marina, or south under the Zier Road bridge. Water winds all over the place, both before and after it goes though Lake Carroll. Want to try to follow along? Find Lake Carroll on Google Maps, switch the viewing method to satellite mode, and follow the streams and runoffs as they meander across Carroll County.

he Earth is like a house: The better you take care of it, the more valuable it becomes, so it’s good thing a Lake Carroll group is helping keep our house in order. The club’s work involves both education and action, and this year they’re putting an emphasis on education — the more we know the more we grow. After all, everyone plays a part in Earth’s ecosystem and everyone benefits from it, be it the tiniest plants or the largest animals. The air we breathe helps keep our atmosphere in check, and our waterways are like the nature’s lifeblood, and plants and trees play an important part in both of them. They nourish the air and cleanse the water. In short, they help put a roof over our heads and keep our planet’s plumbing in good shape. That’s why the members of the Lake Carroll Prairie Club keep chipping away at their home improvement list. It’s a long list, but an important one. The club’s mission: Preserve and protect its corner of the world, managing Lake Carroll’s prairies and woodlands to improve the quality of the community’s ecosystem. The club’s goal: To get more people on board with that mission, and some upcoming events will help them accomplish both of those things. The club has a pair of events in April and May that aim to not only lend a hand to Mother Earth and her children, but get the word out about the club. EarthFest is on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the prairie area north of the West Marina on Lake Carroll Blvd., and the club’s annual native plant sale will be Saturday, May 14, and Sunday, May 15, at the golf course maintenance building near the Clubhouse.

arthFest is April’s major event in honor of Lake Carroll’s 50th Anniversary celebration, and it is the first time the club has organized an event around Earth Day, which is April 22. Having EarthFest the next day, during the weekend, should draw more people to the event, said Pam Richards, who coordinates Prairie Club activities with her husband, Jim. Organizers aim to make the 3-hour event both fun and educational. People can learn the importance Lake Carroll’s ecosystem, why it’s important to keep it healthy, and what each person can do to play a role in keeping nature in balance. Demonstrations will be given on invasive species removal, and plant and animal identification. The event will be for all ages. Richards would like to make this an annual event, like it does with its na-

tive plant sale. “We’re both in Audubon and they do an Earth Day event every year, and we thought that we needed to do something here,” she said. “Our main objective is to get people to visit the prairies, come out to the prairies and see them.” Identifying the good greens from the bad is one of the many topics to be shared at EarthFest. Just because something grows from the ground doesn’t mean it’s good for the environment, or for the prairie. Some unwanted species wind up finding their way into places where they aren’t welcome, which include species that are not native to northern Illinois. In particular, Japanese honeysuckle is a major infestation in Lake Carroll’s prairies, Pam said. The bad greens can be grouped into woody and weedy species.

Members of the Lake Carroll Prairie Club take great pride in assuring the native prairies in the community last for many years to benefit and attract wildlife.

Among the woody species: honeysuckle, buckthorn and multifloral rose. Weedy ones can include wild parsnip, burdock, sweet clover and garlic mustard. The prairie has spots where invasive honeysuckle has remained even after a recent undertaking to clear it. The remnants will be part of a demonstration to show people the proper techniques for safe removal. Custom tools, such as the Parsnip Predator — a specialty shovel designed to remove wild parsnip — will also be demonstrated. “It’s to demonstrate to the population that bush honeysuckle was brought over from Japan, and although it looks pretty, it does damage to our woodlands,” Jim added. “Most of these things that are invasive came from Asia or Europe, and were brought here because they have no natural enemies here.” Activities are planned for the kids, too. discourage kids from having: a slingshot. Kids will roll prairie seeds and soil into a ball and slingshot into the thick of the prairie, where the seeds can take root. The kids can return later to see if the land reaped the harvest of what their slingshot sowed. “That can encourage the kids to come back later in the summer to see if anything’s growing,” Pam said. “I think it’ll be fun for them.” Speaking of getting the ball rolling, club members hope another activity — getting people to come up with their own pledge to help make every day Earth Day — will help get more people committed to the cause. It doesn’t have to be a novel idea, it can be something short and simple, such as, “This is my world and I will take care of it,” Pam said. The goal is to simply raise awareness by giving people a chance to come up with a commitments toward taking better

Other children’s activities include making binoculars to help identify wildlife, planting flowers in pots, Earth Day Bingo, nature scavenger hunts, and playing the role of a bee that pollinates a large 10-foot compass plant; in that activity, juice boxes will be given to children as a lesson on how bees and butterflies take in nectar from flowers. Guests can also learn how other seemingly small changes can make a difference, like the role that birdhouses and bird baths play, as well as alternatives to mosquito spraying. An update also will be provided on a new endeavor that the Prairie Club is working on. In recent months, the members have joined with Lake Carroll’s Fishing Club to hack away at invasive species on a strip of land west of the Fish Hatchery to make a trail to the East Marina.

he Prairie Club’s annual plant sale of native plants returns in May. This year’s sale is tentatively scheduled for May 14 and 15 at the golf course maintenance building, next to the Clubhouse. The sale format will be different than in past years, with no pre-orders taken this year. Instead, plants will be available for purchase — $4 each — and pickup on the sale days. About 1,500 plants will be available during the twoday sale, which is more than the nearly 1,250 that were sold last year. “We’re thinking that if you see them, you’re more likely to buy them,” Pam said. “It will be much simpler” than the way it was done the past two years. In all, 21 different native plants

will be available for sale, all but one of which are returning from last year (descriptions are shown and listed on Page 28). Each plant costs $4. The new kid on the block this year is the prairie phlox (Phlox pilosa). This plant grows to be about 1 to 2 inches tall with full or partial sunlight, and blooms between May and July in dry to medium wet soil. The phlox is low-growing, and smells good, Pam said. Jim likes them, too. “They tolerate a wide range of conditions from dry to medium to wet,” he said. “There aren’t that many beeloving flowers that can grow in partial shade.” Native plants are quite the benefit to improving the local ecosystem: They

help improve air quality, attract wildlife and filter pollutants from stormwater runoff. They also require less fertilizer, pesticides and watering than non-native species. “The Driftless Area here in Carroll County can be instrumental in improving the watershed if steps are taken to avoid erosion and nutrient pollution due to our sloping hills,” Pam said. Through upcoming events such as EarthFest and the plant sale, and other ongoing, year-round efforts, like controlled burns and plant management, the club continues to do its part to keep Mother Nature’s house in order. The club knows all too well that there’s no place like home — especially when it’s the only home we have.

To help celebrate Lake Carroll’s 50th anniversary this year, Lake Lifestyle has asked readers to share some of their favorite memories of their time at the lake. So far, we’ve had some fish tales and love stories, and this month we’re teeing up some memories from the fairway. Lake Carroll’s Steven Ravanesi shared a few photos of friends and family who’ve been getting together in late May or early June for a golf outing that they’ve dubbed the Lake Carroll Golf Open. The participants have been the same core group in most years: Steven and his son, Scott Ravanesi, and Steven’s brother, Mark Ravanesi; brothers Chris and Dave Hennessey; and Mike Pope, John Malizio and Kyle Skarb.

Said Steven: “For 12 years, we have been competing against friends and family in the annual Lake Carroll Golf Open. The invitees have included my brother, son, two other members, and family friends. We have been keeping track of the outcome since 2016. We even present the pair of winners with a plaque and trophy.” The competition began as a simple annual meetup, but 6 years ago the group decided to up the stakes and had a trophy made up and began awarding it to the winning team. Beginning in 2021, a plaque with the names of each winning team also was awarded. The pairings have typically been the same throughout the years. For example, Chris and Scott have been best friends for many years, and team up for the competition. “We play best ball per cart, and the competition is fierce,” Steven said. “No one gets a break and all eyes make sure every stroke is counted. I even make my own son hit out of the most difficult situations. The game gets even more complicated after the drinks sink in. A ton of laughs, a lot of lost balls, many arguments, overstrokes and a few good shots. The last 7 years we have not changed teammates, and I have been playing exclusively with my brother. Normally the losers pay the dinner and bar bill at the Clubhouse.”

The Lake Carroll Golf Open had to move to Lena in 2018, but that didn’t stop the guys from playing. Chris and Dave Hennessey won that year.

The first year they had the trophy was also a bit of a nail biter. Chris and Dave Hennessey tied with Scott and John Malizio at the end of 18 holes. That led to a playoff that went three holes, which proved to be Chris’ favorite moment of the event so far, despite losing to Scott and John in the final hole. “Scott sank a 12-foot putt to make it,” Chris said. “It was devastating, but it was definitely the most amped up we’ve ever been when we were playing that. We never thought it would end.” The team of Mike Pope and Kyle Skarb have dominated the event so far; they’ve finished on top most years, winning in 2017 and in each of the last three competitions. The Hennessey Brothers won in 2018. Chris said he looks forward to not only competing each year, but also spending time socializing with good friends.

“It’s really good to just get out there and spend the time,” Chris said. “In some years, it’s the only time we ever see them.” Chris Hennessey not only enjoys competing in the Lake Carroll Open, but he also loves playing with a friends at other courses in the region. One such 2-day, 36-hole event, dubbed by the group as the Tanuki Cup, came to Lake Carroll last year after Chris bought a house

there. The group enjoyed competing at the course so much, Chris said, that the Cup now will be played for only in Lake Carroll. What’s a tanuki, you ask? Tanukis are a breed of raccoon dogs native to Japan, and are prominent in Japanese folklore and proverbs. The event’s trophy looks like one. While celebrating Lake Carroll and the people who make it possible, we here at Lake Lifestyle would like to honor you by giving you a chance to share your memories and special moments of your time in the community. Our goal is to have a story each month with a different theme that, we hope, is filled with interesting history and tales. If you have any memories or photos, email them to me at ccutter@ saukvalley.com — and don’t be shy: Your story can entertain, enlighten or even inspire others to share their story. While we welcome any and all stories, here are a few

• With May being the month that we celebrate Lake Carroll’s opening day, we’re planning a story for that month’s Lake Lifestyle that will feature a preview of Legacy Day, an anniversary on May 14 at the Clubhouse. • In June, the weather begins to heat up, and the lake gets busy with boaters, fishers and folks who enjoy watching it all go by from from their boats or back yards. Do you have any memories of fun in the sun or life on the lake? (Deadline: May 9) • In July, America will celebrate its 246th birthday with fireworks and reflections on how fortunate we are to have the freedoms we enjoy. Do you honor your country in any special way at the Lake? What are your favorite memories of the annual fireworks events? (Deadline: June 13) • It’s August, and that means it’s back-to-school time. In keeping with the school days theme, maybe you can share what life at Lake Carroll has taught you. It could be the importance of a good neighbor or the value of finding a new friend. Maybe you’ve learned to relax and appreciate all that life in the heart of the country has to offer. Or maybe, if you’re heading back to school, you just want to share what you’ll miss most about summer days at the lake. We’d love to

hear from you. (Deadline: July 11) • In September, the weather starts to cool down, which can bring more people out to enjoy the outdoors. Lake Carroll features miles of walking and ATV trails, as well as several nature areas where you can enjoy the fresh air and see some of the wildlife that calls the lake home. Do you have any happy trail stories – warm or winter weather — you’d like to share? How about memories from camping in the campground? (Deadline: Aug. 8) • In October, ghosts, ghouls and goblins get their moment in the spook-light. What are your favorite memories of Halloween at the lake? (Deadline: Sept. 12) • November is a time for reflection: We give thanks for our blessings, and we salute the service members who’ve answered the call. Do you have a favorite Thanksgiving memory or tradition at Lake Carroll that you’d like to share? Or maybe you’re a veteran at Lake Carroll with a story to tell? Let us hear it. (Deadline: Oct. 10) • Whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, December is a time to celebrate. Do you have any favorite, festive memories from the holidays at Lake Carroll?
