hat’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of Milledgeville? Missiles, right? But martinis? Maybe not, but a pair of pub owners are working to make “Milledgeville martinis” roll off the tongue as easily as “Milledgeville Missiles” – and what’s more, you can even have both in the same glass at Pub 225. With more than 30 different martinis on the menu at the only martini bar in Carroll County – including an orange martini rimmed with black sugar called the Missile, named for the high school’s mascot – Pub 225 has drawn customers from more than just the county; they’ve come from throughout northern Illinois and eastern Iowa, too. And it’s not just the martinis that bring them back; it’s the friendly atmosphere. Husband-and-wife owners Jamie Emmert and Jason Schmidt of Dixon – themselves very social people – have a simple motto at the bar: “Come in as strangers, leave as friends.” “We found so much support with a lot of people,” Emmert said. “We have people who travel over an hour to get here for drinks who bring their friends and bring their family because they hear about our drinks.” Aside from the Missile, other martinis on the menu include a Drunken Pumpkin martini, described as pumpkin pie in a glass; a Sugar Cookie with frosting and sugar; and other varieties such as Dill Pickle, Plum Crazy, Chocolate-Covered Strawberry, and Chocolate-Covered Raspberry.

The list goes on: there’s the usual Dirty martini, Cosmopolitan, Appletini and Lemon Drop, but also After Dinner Mint, Caramel Apple, Cherry Blossom, Chocolate, Coconut Creme, Cucumber Citrus, Gummy Bear, Just Peachy, Mai Thai, Ocean Breeze, Pineapple Upside-Down, Salted Caramel, Shamrock Shake, Sour Apple Jolly Rancher, Sunrise, Werther’s Original, as well as Lime and Strawberry Margratinis. “You don’t think you’re drinking alcohol,” Emmert said. “The chocolate martini tastes like chocolate milk; it goes down that smooth. You don’t get hit with this alcohol flavor and then the sudden aftertaste. It’s all that flavor, what it’s supposed to be, up front.” Creating those creative concoctions isn’t easy: They have to be mixed carefully with the right amount of ingredients, and Emmert can make that happen. She’s pretty good at shaking things up. In fact, she’s a certified mixologist, and that’s not just some self-anointed title. Emmert has taken online courses to earn it.

To get the certification, martini-making alums have to have an understanding of different types of liquors, different flavor profiles, different colors, different combinations, and how to adjust them for a sweet or bitter taste. What goes into a good martini? Simply put: It’s the right balance. “That is all that it is,” Emmert said. “It’s not about how much liquor is in it, not about how much filler is in it. When you take that sip, can you get the right balance to taste like what it is supposed to taste like? If you’re claiming that it’s a coconut martini, that first taste better be coconut; and it better be the real coconut.” “If you want something to have a peach flavor, believe it or not you would add cranberry juice,” Emmert said. “It’s strange, but it’s just about learning about the different types of liquor and everything about them, and how they interact with others.” As popular as their martinis are, they weren’t always in the mix. Pub 225’s story began 3 years ago when the couple sought to keep the building an active part of the downtown. Relatives own the building and didn’t want it to become run down. Today, after some repairs and renovation – including a restored tin ceiling – it’s become an important part of Milledgeville’s business district.

Even its name is a nod to the history of the city it calls home. The pub’s name comes from the first three numbers of Milledgeville’s telephone system. The bar’s beginnings had its usual offerings of beers and shots – which customers can still get – but the couple knew that they couldn’t make it on that alone. “I said, ‘We need to have a couple of martinis on the menu,’” Emmert said. “We started with five basic martinis. It took off, and people started saying, ‘You needed to add this one, and this one.’” Jeff and Tyni Currens of Lanark are regular customers. Tyni’s favorite martini is the Gummy Bear, but on a recent afternoon she enjoyed a Lemon Drop while Jeff sipped a Salted Caramel. “The drinks are phenomenal,” Tyni said. “We don’t go out a lot, but when we do, this is our to-go place. The martinis are really good, and the staff and the owners are very friendly.” Also on the menu are cock310 N. The economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic this year gave them the idea to build an outdoor patio to help reopen the bar as soon as it could. “We go for simplicity,” Schmidt said. “We’re simple, quaint, comfortable, and have a laid back crowd.” Schmidt grew up in Milledgeville, and Emmert was raised in Polo. The couple also work full-time jobs, but despite a busy schedule, they haven’t lost their passion for bringing people together from all walks of life. That passion has also led them to regional martini making competitions in Davenport and Dubuque. Sandwiched between larger displays from larger businesses, Emmert and Schmidt used just a small table to show off their creations. The Dill Pickle martini, which is a dirty martini but with a pickle instead of an olive, earned “rave reviews” during a recent competition, Emmert said. “It was a surprise to us that it went as well as it did,” Emmert said. “It’s Milledgeville, we got, what, 900 people? You got to follow where it goes, and we’re along for the ride now.”

As a freshman 2 years ago, Andy helped the Cougars qualify for the sectional meet with a score of 100 during the regional. One year later, he improved upon that finish with an 87 at regionals. He’s hoping to break 80 at the end of this season. Andy is the son of Scott and Kelly Bares and Lonnie Anderson. He has a sister, Chloe, and a brother, Braden.
WHAT IS SPECIAL AND UNIQUE ABOUT THE LAKE CARROLL COURSE? Definitely the number of trees and the greens. Both of those things make the course tough and very unique. DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME YOU EVER SWUNG A CLUB? WHEN WAS THAT, AND WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE? I think the first time I swung a club was when I was 6. My dad told me that I stuck the ball 2 feet from the hole. I don’t know if I can trust him about that though. ANYONE ELSE IN YOUR FAMILY GOLF? My sister went to the state meet in high school, and my dad, stepdad and brother golf. WHO INFLUENCED YOU TO WANT TO JOIN THE HIGH SCHOOL GOLF TEAM? My sister played on the high school team, so that influenced me. I’ve always liked playing, so I knew when I got to high school I would join the team.

WHAT HAS YOUR TIME ON THE HIGH SCHOOL GOLF TEAM BEEN LIKE FOR YOU? The most fun I’ve had with a group of guys. Every bus ride was a show and throughout the years I’ve always bonded really well with my teammates. DO YOU HAVE ANY GOALS FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL SEASON? Every year the goal is state. Ever since freshman year I’ve been trying super hard, but have fallen short each year at sectionals. WHAT GOLF ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOUR MOST PROUD OF? Advancing to sections 2 years in a row. Since it was with my team both years in a row that makes it really special to me. WHAT IS YOUR BEST LAKE CARROLL COURSE MEMORY? I have so many good memories on the golf course. Every time I go out I have a good time and make memories. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A GOOD GOLFER? A lot of time and effort put into working hard at the course. Also being mentally strong. DO YOU HAVE A GOLF MENTOR? I would say my golf mentor is my golf coach, Jason Hill. He has taught me a lot throughout my high school career, and I can’t wait to have him as a coach for 2 more years. WHAT’S ONE RULE IN GOLF THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGE? I wouldn’t wanna change a rule but I would like to add a rule. If you know your ball is in play, but for some reason you can’t find it. You only get one stroke instead of two, only if everyone in the group agrees. It would be called the gallery rule, because if you had a gallery you would be able to find the ball. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE AND LEAST-FAVORITE HOLES AT LAKE CARROLL? My favorite hole is No. 6. I like how it’s the longest on the course, but it’s downhill a lot so that helps. I usually start a little bit of a run on that hole. My least favorite hole is No. 18. The hole is just overall tough. The hole is long and a tad uphill at the start. The green is miserable there, too.

THE HIGH SCHOOL SEASON CAN START OUT, WEATHER-WISE, REAL WARM AND FINISH REAL COLD. DO YOU PREFER ONE OVER THE OTHER AT ALL WHEN YOU’RE PLAYING? Yes, I prefer warm weather. Who doesn’t prefer warm weather when golfing? At the end of the season it gets tough, the ball doesn’t fly as far, you get tired easier, and the greens are really tough. HOW OFTEN ARE YOU ON A GOLF COURSE IN ANY GIVEN WEEK OF GREAT WEATHER? Last year I was on the golf course every day, 5 hours a day. However, this year, it was cut down a lot due to some college courses I took over the summer and the lake. WHAT’S YOUR BEST 9- AND 18-ROUND SCORE DURING YOUR HIGH SCHOOL DAYS? HOW DID THOSE DAYS FEEL FOR YOU? The best nine holes in a match was 38 at Lake Carroll. Best 18 was mid- to high 80. Those days I’m usually hitting the ball pretty good. I’m disappointed because I feel like those scores should be lower. WHO IS SOMEONE ON THE TEAM THAT IT MIGHT COME AS SURPRISE TO LEARN HOW TALENTED THEY ARE? Kellen Henze. It’s not a surprise, but the kid is a great golfer and very talented. Everyone should expect big things out of him this year. IF YOU WANTED TO INFLUENCE SOMEONE TO COME JOIN THE HIGH SCHOOL GOLF TEAM, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THEM? How much fun practices are; and you can play golf for the rest of your life, so learn how to play now. ARE THERE ANY OTHER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES IN WHICH YOU PARTICIPATE? I play basketball, I’m a servant leader and in the student council. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME, OUTSIDE OF GOLF AND SCHOOL ACTIVITIES? I’m always on the lake if it’s a nice day out. Also, hanging with friends and mostly getting food. WHAT WILL YOU DO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? I’m enrolled in the CollegeNow program at Highland Community College in Freeport. This program helps me earn dual credits for high school and college. Right now, I’m earning an associate degree in chemistry. After getting my bachelor’s degree, I want to go to dental school and hopefully become a dentist.

The roots of the Lake Carroll Women’s Club stretch back as far the community itself, and though the club has seen its fair share of changes through the years, members have remained committed to its mission of getting to know – and help – their community
Editor’s note: The following history of the Lake Carroll Women’s Club was written by its founder and then president, Hattie Vicker, in 2007. The column provides a detailed history of the club’s origins and its early days, as told by someone who was intimately involved in its formation and subsequent growth. The article is being reprinted here as a way to celebrate and preserve the club’s history and not, as Vicker said, let it be forgotten in “aging albums” or “worn and fading yearbooks.” The club has a rich history, one that Vicker celebrates in great detail throughout the article, recounting its various incarnations, from its early days in cramped quarters to a club that’s become an integral part of the lake’s lifestyle. Despite all that change, one thing has remained the same: the club’s commitment to not only the Lake Carroll community and the people who live there, but to the surrounding communities. Vicker saw “so much promise” in the club back in 2007, a promise that the club’s 79 members are still living up to today: establishing voluntary community service, taking care of the Lake Carroll community and contributing to its growth, and spreading its volunteerism throughout the area. nnn
What do I remember? What will I remember? I know my name is Hattie Vicker. I am founder and past president of the Lake Carroll Women’s Club. This is an attempt to preserve the history of our club as well as the efforts of those property owners who have been proactive in the development of women’s activities throughout the years, since the birth of Lake Carroll in 1972. It was feared that the history of the organization would be lost if contained only in aging albums, worn and fading yearbook, documents, and scrapbooks.

The first organization formed at the Lake, in 1972, was called the Social Committee; its aim was to bring us out of our homes and engage us in the community events created by committee members. Not only did you become an active members of the committee – then, a small group of women – everyone in Lake Carroll became a neighbor and your friend. Events were usually held at Plumtree Lodge. Seasonal parties, potlucks, hoedowns, card parties, costume parties – for any reason – it was a social for all. Even an honor system library was started in the fireplace room at the Plumtree Lodge. The Social Committee also decorated for the holidays – the Lodge, the Clubhouse, even the guardhouse. As our population grew, it was pretty tight quarters at the old Clubhouse. Members would be elbow to elbow in its tiny kitchen, peeling potatoes, paring carrots, chopping onions through the tears, and filling the borrowed Nesco cookers, placing them where they wouldn’t blow a fuse. We had “Holiday Cheer” for newcomers, originally for Easter, and featured entertainment that included instrumental and choral groups. We also had a St. Patrick’s Day dinner and bingo (100 plates for $20 a dinner). The women provided dump cake for dessert, served with Cool Whip and coffee. What an easy dessert to make and take to the lodge: cake mix, can of cherries, can of pineapple, and nuts. Two special New Year’s gigs took place, ones that I remember well because I was on that the special committee that the Social Committee put together.

Club
The Lake Carroll Women’s Club is a philanthropic organization of dedicated ladies who support charities in Carroll County. The vision of the Women’s Club is development of its members intellectually and socially through fellowship, community service and charitable endeavors. The meetings are the second Thursday of each month, September through June. There is opportunity for every member to share their talents for the good of the community. Some of our more prominent committee activities are summed up below. There is a Program Committee that plans monthly programs of interest to the membership. Some past program presentations were hobbies of members such as scrapbooking, stained glass and doll collections. Community resources are also called upon and have presented programs on topics such as interior design, photography, soap and jewelry making. Sometimes the programs are field trips to places such as New Glarus, White Pines dinner theatre and antique shops. There is a Ways and Means Committee that plans fundraisers involving the membership in supporting their charitable goals. They have a bake sale in conjunction with the Chili Cook-off in October. They have entertained past events such as fashion shows, antique appraisals, sale of purse hangers, raffles and other enterprising efforts. The Allocations Committee determines which charities to fund and the amount of funds each receives. All money raised by the club is given to the community. The first one was held in the old Clubhouse – there wasn’t much room to dance, but everyone still enjoyed a wonderful dinner and cocktail party – a fine dinner and wonderful camaraderie to usher in the new year. The second gig filled the Lodge with music, courtesy of Doris Linker of Shannon and her Sounds of Gold band. For the price of a ticket, guests picked up a party hat and popped it on as they enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, a cash cocktail bar, champagne (courtesy of Bill Piper), coffee, dancing and Susan Sinkovitz’s homemade cookies. That was BIG! Another way in which people were drawn into the local communities around this time involved the Float Committee. In 1988, the first Lake Carroll float appeared in the Shannon homecoming parade. For several years thereafter, we had floats annually in various parades in Lanark, Shannon and Carroll counties, including the Carroll County Sesquicentennial and Lake Carroll’s 20th anniversary. The women of Lake Carroll may have been strong factors in the success of these floats (several of which won monetary and/or ribbon prizes), but without the men of our community, these building projects would never have come to fruition. They were also made possible thanks in no small part to the Social Committee, whose imagination and hard work brought these floats to life. I know, because I chaired the first one with my husband, Paul, and worked on all of them; I still have photos of these fantastic floats.
Connecting with some Livewires
The Social Committee was a very active group, but something was missing: an ongoing desire to establish voluntary community service; taking care of our own and contributing to the growth of Lake Carroll, while spreading our volunteerism beyond our local borders. So, in 1987, when members of the North Otter Creek Livewires invited Lake Carroll women to join them, we were ready. The group was one unit among 17 units of the Carroll County Homemakers Extension Association, which was born out of the Farm Bureau (then known as the Home Bureau) to serve the needs of women in the farm community. The Association made periodic changes to its official title in keeping with the interests of other than just rural women. Today, it is known as the HCE Association of Carroll County, though we still refer to it as Home Extension. Lake Carroll members felt the alliance held great merit. Structured programs offered by the Cooperative Extension of University of Illinois were aimed mostly toward women – relative to home, health, garden family and financial prudence. Those Lake Carroll ladies who initially joined were Dorothy Hoppe, Janet Novak, Iola Rohr, Bev Whealon, Hattie Vicker, Anita O’Bright and Shirley Lehman. What a boost to the Livewires’ membership! Four years later, the number of Carroll County units had dropped to about 7, with individual units averaging about 10 to 15 members each. Our unit was carrying the full responsibility of the larger county-wide events, and some members suggested we disband. In June 1991, as we voted the balance of our treasury be donated to the Carroll County 4H Federation, I made a promise that we would continue to meet in the spring and fall each year, as we had done before. And so we did – from Christmas of 1991 to Christmas of 2006, twice a year for 16 years; 32 luncheon outings in all, with about 8 to 10 members in 2006, down from an average of 12 to 15 in previous years. The outings included Maxson’s luncheon cruise, Brick Street, Mount Carroll, Imperial Esquire, and Lake Carroll Clubhouse restaurant.

In July 1991 the Lake Carroll members of the now disbanded Livewires sent out a call for Lake Carroll ladies who might be interested in such a program. The response was overwhelming! Forty-eight ladies signed up for the first meeting, which was held in September 1991.

We voted on our name and settled on the Lake Carroll Can-do’s. We were given a preview of the Extension program and elected our first president, Donna Pyle. We managed to bring the number of Carroll County units back up to 10! The education-based programs suited us to a T, and we added the fun! Through Shirley Schloderback’s efforts, we acquired sweatshirts with our own logo and planned many outings in addition to our monthly home meetings. There were clever interpretations and innovations of the established programs provided by the Home Extension Council of Carroll County, including .... • Antique Study – We combined this with a luncheon trip to Galena • Home decorating program • Fitness program – We converted Plumtree Lodge to a gym. We also donated an American flag and stand to the Lodge for everyone’s use. Meanwhile, in 1994, a recreation director, Steve Geisz, was hired and the Social Committee worked with him until he left. The committee then opted for a new title – Special Events Club – and never lost its momentum. It continued to be the driving force behind Lake Carroll’s social activities until it was disbanded in 1999. (In 2002, the Special Events Club reactivated itself and recreated itself and built a float to help celebrate Lake Carroll’s 30th anniversary. The float was built by Marge and Doug Short, Kathy and Jim Larson, Carroll and Fred Abel, and Betty and Milt Kolzow. We participated in several parades that summer: Shannon homecoming, Lanark Old Setters, and the Carroll County Fair.)
Enter the Lake Carroll Women’s Club
By 1998, the number of Home Extension units in Carroll County had dwindled. Thanks to Can-do’s president at the time, Arlene Tylutki, and our existing officers, we withdrew graciously from the Carroll County Association during a joint breakfast, where we bid them a fond farewell and told them how much we appreciated them, and expressed our desire to continue the friendships we had formed during our time together, friendships that prevail today. Members of the former Lake Carroll Can-do’s proclaimed their strong desire to band together to make their own program choices and further expand their voluntary community service and philanthropic efforts. On July 15, 1999, the Special Events Club officers held a meeting where members unanimously voted to disband in order to support a group that would become the Lake Carroll Women’s Club. The Special Events Club’s remaining funds were used for a bench at the Clubhouse entrance in remembrance of the women of Lake Carroll, who spent endless hours and energy on myriad events since the inception of the Social Committee. Four dedicated ladies came forward and worked through the summer of 1999 to present the club to interested members. Joan Cleary, Emily Longfield, Joan Frey and Phyliss Suchocki helped Hattie Vicker in adopting the format, guidelines, and purpose of the long-standing Community Women’s Club of Villa Park, a club Hattie had been a member of for more than 50 years. It was that organization’s “little red book” that was used to lay the foundation of the Lake Carroll Women’s Club.

And so it was that the Lake Carroll Women’s Club was formed in June 1999, with its first meeting held Sept. 12 at Plumtree Lodge. This was Lake Carroll’s first freestanding, independent group committed to its own chosen endeavors and goals, with no affiliation with another master association. The following officers were elected: President Hattie Vicker, Vice President and Program Chairman Joan Cleary, Second Vice President Phyliss Suchocki, treasurer Emily Longfield, and secretary Joan Frey. The club’s constitution was unanimously adopted along with its mission, with members declaring the object of the club was “the development of its members’ intellectual endeavors, special fellowship, community services, and charitable courses.” We confirmed our ongoing interest in our previous Home Extension projects and immediately adopted the 4-H program and Shannon-Lanark Food Pantry among our community endeavors. Countless projects have been added to our service list – one that’s special to me, and a very high priority among members – is Project Linus. This was introduced to us by JoAnn Lichamer and is still chaired by her and supported by committee members Phyllis Davies, Elvera Hinkle, and Roberta Schoenfeld. The committee prepares the materials and members meet twice a year to hand-tie quilts to donate to patients with serious health problems, mostly children. We also make and accept hand-crocheted blankets. Our members also provide support for the Senior

We provided a birthday party for Mount Carroll Nursing Home in August, and a camp scholarship for a disadvantaged child in the Eastland School District. We also hold at least one fundraiser during the year, with members recommending and voting on how to distribute the funds. Recipients have included: Lanark Library, CASA, Senior Center, Neighborhood Watch, Smile Train, Shriners Hospital, Justin Tyler Home, and Lake Carroll Security. We will also purchased a clock for the Lodge meeting room, and we’ve added to an existing fund to provide a handicap-accessible door at the Clubhouse. I see so much promise in the future of the club as it continues its work to help those in need and lend support to those who are working to keep people focused and responsible for themselves. I realize I have emphasized the women of Lake Carroll. Most of my association has been with them, but I have seen how effective and active they have been in every facet of our life and operation here. The men and women who made the investment in this community and continue doing so should be credited with its growth and development. Not until participation does one realize the profound effect of life at Lake Carroll. I know! Take it from me! It’s all about the active men and women of Lake Carroll.

ho knew garlic had more than 250 different types, shapes and sizes? Darrin and Jenny Eubanks, that’s who. The husband-and-wife team are experts in their field at Straddle Creek Gardens, just east of their native Lanark, where the couple grows garlic – and lots of it, garlic as far as the eye can see and the nose can smell: music garlic, which is the most common type of garlic and one most people use; red and white German garlic; and Straddle Creek Garlic, which is native to Pennsylvania and doesn’t pop up locally very often. China supplies about 80 percent of the garlic to the U.S., but Straddle Creek Gardens provides a more direct farm-to-table approach. “When it comes to garlic, really there are many, many varieties,” Darrin said. “We kind of keep it pretty simple. Being here in the Midwest, we stick with the basic varieties that people know.”

Straddle Creek’s locally grown goods go from the farm to the dinner table, both in restaurants and homes. Several regional restaurants use the garden’s produce. Manny’s Pizza in Savanna uses Saddle Creek’s tomatoes for its hot sauce, as well as its jalapenos. Eastland High School’s FFA program also utilizes the garden for some of its activities. Natural fish emulsion is used for fertilizer, and even that’s locally sourced, from Schafer Fisheries south of Thomson. Darrin said the fishy fertilizer makes for better garlic. “A lot of it is how well you fertilize it,” he said. “In the spring time, you plant one clove. One clove goes in, and the secret is that it’s a timing thing. You plant it where the roots get established before the frost. If you don’t, it will heave up and sit on top of the ground.”

Garlic takes up the biggest portion of the Eubanks’ 10-acre garden – named for the creek that flows at the north edge of their grounds – but the couple also grows jalapenos, zucchini, cabbage, sweet corn, potatoes, cucumber, strawberries and cherry and paste tomatoes. While Jenny coordinates most of the work in the garden, Darrin does much of the promoting and operations part of it. That includes giving lessons in garlic planting, opening its gates to the public for special events, and getting the word out that garlic is an important vegetable that not only enhances foods’ flavor, but has plenty of health benefits too. Among those benefits, garlic is packed with vitamins B and C, manganese, selenium, iron, copper and potassium; it promotes heart health and it contains cancer-fighting compounds. And it’s pretty tasty, too. “If you’re going to season a whole bowl of pasta, you’d probably want to use our Straddle Creek; that has more pungency,” Darrin said. “One clove can go a lot further than what [a music] would.” German red garlic is also pretty pungent, music garlic less so, and it’s not as spicy. “The music is really good for roast garlic. It caramelizes and sweetens up a lot.” The Eubanks had a garden in town for years, but they soon outgrew it, and even used their son’s back yard for their growing business, Darrin said. Now, with a bigger garden, they can organically grow about 12,000 bulbs of garlic a year. They hang it inside a shed after it’s pulled, 110 on a string and 10 in a bundle, where they await cleaning and grading – a process done by hand. Then they are sold, either at farmers markets in Lake Carroll, Freeport and Rockford, or online. The couple also raises bees to make honey, and earlier this year, they planted a field of sunflowers to give the busy little buzzers a place to pollinate. The heads of the flowers are like a mother lode of nectar and pollen for bees.

It’s that time of the year, when they start seeing red at Straddle Creek, thanks to the tomatoes that are almost ripe for the picking. The flowers were a hit with people, too. The Eubanks decided to do something pretty a-maze-ing with the flowers that reach for the sky: they put their own twist on the popular corn mazes and set up a sunflower maze. The colorful twists and turns proved to be quite a hit before the maze closed July 26, drawing lots of people who worked their way through the winding paths and clipped some flowers. “People pay money to go through Darrin Eubanks talks about the different types of corn mazes, but it’s just all brown garlic produced at Straddle Creek Gardens in rural and that’s it,” Darrin said. “This first Lanark. Carrasco family from Chicago — Ron, Josie, Yanelli, and Noemi – who made the trip from their home in Lake Carroll. “This is amazing,” Josie said. “The day was looking on the gloomy side so I said, ‘Let’s go on over before the sunflowers are gone’.” Josie’s husband, Ron, said he liked the visual appeal of the sunflowers as well as their benefit for the bees. “It’s nice what the owners decided to do, and to help the bees of course.” The maze ended up becoming one of the garden’s largest attractions, helped in part by a pandemic that put a lot of activities on hold for the summer. For those who missed the maze, but still want to visit the farm, Straddle Creek Gardens has more events scheduled. Everything Garlic will be Sept. 5 and 6 for garlic lovers, gardeners and anyone interested in how garlic is grown. Seminars on growing will be held at 1 p.m. each day, and there’ll be plenty of garlic for sale: seed garlic, gourmet garlic, picked garlic scapes, garlic salt and powder, garlic butter, garlic pesto, garlic popcorn, black garlic and smoked garlic. In addition, they have a Fall Festival on a pair of weekends in October. The exact dates will be announced on Straddle Creek Gardens’ Facebook page. There are hayrack rides, pumpkins to pick, and, yep, plenty of garlic. Events like these are just a few of the ways the couple lives up to their mission “to promote farm to table, and to interact with and educate our family, friends and neighbors.” “We just do a lot of different things here,” Darrin said. “We’re really diversified. We always got something that will carry us through the whole year.”

After all, that’s Heckman’s job as Lake Carroll Clubhouse Restaurant and Bar’s events coordinator. “Every event is different, which is nice,” she said. “We give them what they like and we make it happen.” This year has been tricky when it comes to catering to wishes while adhering to new public gathering guidelines brought forth by the COVID19 pandemic. However, with virus prevention measures making a bit of headway throughout Illinois, restaurant, bar and banquet facilities are once more filling up with hungry people – as long as they follow state guidelines.

“People come here to have a relaxed, good time,” Heckman said. Once gathering guidelines become loosened further, the Clubhouse can begin adding more bands and entertainment to its lineup. Already, in limited capacity, music trivia, boogie woogie bingo and a Roaring Twenties murder-mystery dinner have brought life back to the clubhouse. Those are activities clubhouse manager Deb Kuhlemeier loves to see. “We’re always trying to come up with different ideas and specials, fun stuff to help bring life in here,” Kuhlemeier said. The restaurant is open year-round to both members and the general public. Want to have a party, gathering, work meeting, or anything else under one room, or four? people. One room, the Sunrise Room, faces the morning sun. The patio also can be rented. The clubhouse holds about 50 banquets during a typical year: meetings, golf outings, Christmas parties and more. The banquet menu includes breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, single lunch entrees such as the boneless pork chop and beef Wallingford, and dinner buffets of meat, pasta and salad. A wide range of hors d’oeuvres includes common snacks, caprese skewers, rumaki (bacon-wrapped liver and chestnut), and international cheese platters. One dinner banquet option can be arranged to have guests cook their own steaks, burgers, chops and chicken breasts on the patio. Equipment for business purposes, such as LCD projectors, sound systems, monitors and easel flip charts also are available for rent. Reservations can be done by phone, in-person or at the clubhouse website. Event contracts are required and must be finalized 60 days before the event.

The clubhouse has hosted every type of party one can think of, Kuhlemeier said. “It’s unique because it’s a beautiful little getaway that’s right in your backyard. It’s a nice atmosphere for dinner. It’s quiet. Our prices are very reasonable. And they can golf. It’s a little paradise in their own backyard.” If you’d rather host at home or elsewhere, the Clubhouse can help there, too, with its catering service. The bar area and dining room have windows that look out over the golf course. Four gambling machines are near the bar for those who wish to try their luck at winning some money. The sandwiches are served with chips and include hamburgers, wraps and club sandwiches. Also on the menu are salads and chicken, pork and prime rib sandwiches, beerbattered onion rings and mushrooms, and garlic pizza sticks. Children’s menus and other health-mindful options, such as gluten-free buns and vegan burgers, are available. Fridays feature a fish fry, and prime rib is the Saturday special. The clubhouse’s pizzas are available dinein and to-go. There are 12- and 16-inch varieties; including a 12-inch gluten free crust with anything you want on it; and 16-inch specialty pizzas such as barbecue chicken and a supreme with sausage, pepperoni, mushCODY CUTTER FOR LAKE LIFESTYLE room, onion and green peppers.
