isconsin may be the chief cheesehead – it’s America’s Dairy Land, after all – but Illinois is pretty cheesy, too. So, if you’re looking to take a dairy day trip where you can tempt your taste buds with seemingly endless varieties of cheeses, hop in the car, stop at some shops, and enjoy a slice of life in the Midwest. Whether it’s yellow, white or orange, good quality cheese comes from well-raised cows that roam the pastures, of which Wisconsin has plenty – but Illinois is home to cheese-makers and cheese shops, too, many of which dot the landscape near the Illinois-Wisconsin border, and not far from Lake Carroll. Most grocery stores carry only a limited offering of a cheese-makers’ inventory, and the closer one can get to the factory, the more likely the rest of their offerings will be found. But if you want the full spread of cheese varieties, visiting a cheese shop is your best bet. If you’re looking for cheeses to compliment a wine, top off a cracker, slide into a sandwich, or just sink your teeth into, there are plenty of cheese shops within an hour’s drive from Lake Carroll. If you really like cheese, Monroe is the place to go – and if you get lost, just follow your nose Do you really love cheese? Then Monroe, Wisconsin, is a worth a road trip. Monroe (population 10,625), the county seat of Green County, is known as the Gateway to Cheese Country and the Cheese Capital of the United States. It is home to multiple cheese factories and is a shipping hub for additional ones throughout the region. Just about every food or drink establishment has a selection of various cheeses for sale. The town also hosts Green County Cheese Days, which typically is held the third weekend of September. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the next Cheese Days event won’t be until Sept. 16-18, 2022. The festival has a variety of cheese vendors, cheese making demonstrations, parades, a carnival, live entertainment, royalty crowning, running and walking races, contests and more. opened for the season May 1. According to its website, the focus of the museum is to recognize the importance of the dairy farmers, cheesemaking and other parts of the industry, from the farm to the market. Also on site is the restored Imobersteg Cheese Factory, where each year on the second Saturday of June, a 90-pound wheel of Swiss cheese is produced, just as it was commonly done more than a century ago. Only one cheese factory in the United States makes Limburger cheese, and that’s Country Castle in Monroe. This cheese is especially popular in Belgium and Germany. amed author Lewis Carroll didn’t lend his name to Lake Carroll, but for one day in August, there will be a bit of an “Alice in Wonderland” feel at the community’s golf course. Come Aug. 18, plenty of “mad hatters” will be roaming the links, in honor of this year’s theme for the Lake Carroll Ladies Invitational. Participants are asked to bring their most outlandish hat – just like something out of “Alice in Wonderland,” anything funky and out of the ordinary will do – to help give the event some color and flair. The event will kick off at 8 a.m. with a 30-minute registration session, and action will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

Sandi Szulkowski and Sue Pfaff are the co-chairs of this year’s event and came up with the theme. In addition, Pfaff, along with last year’s tournament chairwoman Sandy Bogusevic, put on their thinking caps and came up with a logo for the event. The invitation is about more than just the game. Golfers also look forward to getting to know their fellow players during the event.
“The league and invitational are both great,” Pfaff said. “We have owned our property for almost 20 years and just in the past 2 years we have had more time to spend at Lake Carroll. I have met so many nice ladies and also their husbands, which has been great for [my husband] Glen as well.” While golf certainly has its moments of earnest concentration – measuring putts, angling chip shots – having fun is what makes the annual invitational so inviting.

not that this is a competitive league — it is not — but this is the only time I can compete during the week.” Szulkowski, a resident of Lake Carroll for 2 years, wasn’t able to compete during her first year at the lake due to an injury, but knew that being a part of it was going to be a fun experience, so she roamed around the course taking pictures of that year’s event. Once she got back in the swing of things last year, she did well enough to win a few prizes.

“It’s always a good time to be out on the course meeting new people and playing fun games,” Szulkowski “I am having fun putting the Invitational together with Sue Pfaff this year, again, because of all the wonderful people I am meeting and talking with. It is also fun gathering props and coming up with games and prizes.” Fellow golfer Athena Peterson agreed. “I enjoy meeting ladies from other golf communities and really enjoy showing off our beautiful golf course,” she said. “The ladies league has been a great way to meet and get to know other Lake Carroll residents,” golfer Marvelene Feucht said. “It’s wonderful to have other ladies to golf with. We play by the rules but add in plenty of fun. “We’re very lucky to have so many ladies that love the game.” Fun and friendly competition aren’t all the invitational offers. There’s a feeling of satisfaction, too, which comes from being able to make a difference. Players chip in and help others thanks to the league’s charitable aspect. While a portion of the league’s yearly membership dues of $10 pays for prizes for top finishes at the annual invitational,most of it goes toward a charity of

the league’s choice. Past recipients include the Shannon Food Pantry, Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, Hospice, the Home Improvement Task Force, Relay For Life and the Pitter Patter Pantry of Mount Carroll. This year’s charity of choice is still being decided. The first Lake Carroll Ladies Golf League formed in 1978 and played its first 9-hole rounds the following year with morning and afternoon play. Interest in the league grew rapidly, and it didn’t take too long for more women to join. In 1980, the first women’s invitational tournament began in a 9-hole format. The 18-hole portion was first played in 1991. The event’s growth has continued into recent years, with numbers eventually climbing to more than 100 golfers the past couple of years. The field reached a peak of 140 members with the 2019 invitational, but dropped to about 100 for last year’s invitational – a downturn likely due to the pandemic. The league, according to its constitution, “is an organization open to all women who are interested in improving their golf skills while playing the rules and etiquette of golf in a mildly competitive, social atmosphere.”

Registration is open to not just golfers from Lake Carroll, but women who tee up at other local golf courses, as well as courses that are played on by the Lake Carroll Senior Traveling League; the draw usually reaches out to places as far as Clinton, Iowa; Monroe, Wisconsin; Galena; Dixon; Byron and Freeport. “It takes a village to put on the Lake Carroll Ladies Golf Invitational,” Szulkowski said. “Starting with Jason Hill, our head pro, along with his staff and many women from the league, and their husbands, too.” Teamwork, camaraderie, and a little competition — it’s a winning combination that will have players scoring a hole in fun for years to come.

imber Lake Playhouse, the longtime local theater based in Mount style Life Carroll, plans to ke a continue to do what it does best – entertain while bringing stories to life and smiles to people’s faces. Though a pandemic continues to sow uncertainty in the world of live entertainment, the team at Timber Lake is determined to not let it bring down the curtain on its season. The theater has eight shows on the schedule, including one that’ll be a first for Timber Lake. The first seven will take the stage between June and September, and the season-ender will come a bit later in the year, but it’ll be worth the wait. BY

For the first time in the theater’s 60-year history, it will host the world premiere of a new musical: “What a Wonderful World,” in December. Four shows that were scheduled for last season have been moved to this year’s lineup –”Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “The Buddy Holly Story” and “What a Wonderful World” — and three shows from last year’s lineup – “Annie,” “Legally Blonde,” and “Eleemosynary” — have been moved to the 2022 schedule. Even with the many changes that the pandemic has brought to everyday life, fans still can expect to see quality shows and stage performances, Executive Director Dan Danielowski said.

This concept was used with success during the most recent NBA and NHL sports seasons. Playhouse staff will all have been vaccinated before the summer, Danielowski said. “Unfortunately, there will be very little interaction between the company and our patrons this season,” Danielowski said, but they’re doing what they can to give the audience a glimpse behind the scenes. “We are working on some ways for our patrons to see the workings of the productions and meet our company, much like they are used to.” Danielowski and Artistic Director Paul Stancato have started a weekly podcast, “TLP Live,” on its Facebook and YouTube pages every Sunday at 6:30 p.m. with interviews, updated information about the venue and its entertainment lineup, and more. In his blog at timberlakeplayhouse.org, Executive Director Dan Danielowski (right) said TLP’s staff has been taking advantage of the down time during the pandemic “to get a lot of projects completed at the campus that we don’t typically have time to do when we’re in production.” Parts of the campus have been getting a makeover, including a concrete slab that provided a foundation for a new building (right) that will be used for large gatherings and other events. In return, her mother dedicated her spare time to helping Patsy’s career, and drove her to Nashville when she was only 16 for her first Grand Ole Opry audition. TLP Artistic Director Paul Stancato directs and brings a brand new, never-before-seen concept to this powerful musical. “Jesus Christ Superstar” tells the story of the last seven days of Jesus’s life, as told by apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Told through the eyes of Judas, this completely-sung-through score originally began as a concept album by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice that changed the face of musical theatre when it was released in 1970. It made its Broadway debut in 1971 and was performed live on television in 2018, starring John Legend as Jesus.

Throw in an evil stepmother who’s intent on Rosamund’s demise, her pea-brained henchman, and a hostile talking headin-a-trunk, and you have a rollicking country romp.
Aug. 19 to 29 Music by Thomas “Fats” Waller, lyrics by various artists. Conceived by Richard Maltby Jr. and Murray Horwitz. Directed by Gregory Omar Osborne. Rated PG-13 (suggestive language). The inimitable Thomas “Fats” Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club and that jumpin’ new beat, swing music. Although not quite a biography, “Ain’t Misbehavin’” evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American original as a versatile cast struts, strums and sings the songs that he made famous in a career that ranged from uptown clubs to downtown Tin Pan Alley to Hollywood and concert stages in the U.S., Canada and Europe.
As of press time, Timber Lake, 8215 Black Oak Road, south of Mount Carroll, is open to 60% capacity as Illinois inches forward to Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois plan in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. This will allow enough seating for the theater’s existing subscription holders and still allow for additional single tickets to be sold, Danielowski said. For theater shows, an empty seat will be in place between patrons. For this season, all show tickets will be resold either via phone

The kind of fish stories you’ll only get from being part of the Lake Carroll Fishing Club’s Kids Fishing Derby. “Some of the best things about the derby is families get to gather and share and tell fishing stories," board member and event co-coordinator Neil "Doc" Hightower said. "A younger sibling may catch more fish or a larger fish than the older sibling; some children may get to experience the chance to catch fish for the very first time and parents and grandparents get to enjoy in the fun and hopefully have a great time in nice weather." Come this summer, kids can answer the derby’s casting call when the derby drops bait on June 26. We’ve all heard that there are plenty of fish in the sea, but Lake Carroll does pretty good for itself too, packing a variety of fish into its 640-acre lake. Bass, bluegill, crappie, perch, walleye — young anglers

can catch ‘em all at the derby. They just need bait, a pole and some patience. The event begins with registration at 9 a.m. followed by a 2-hour window when children can roam around the edge of the lake along boundaries at the East Marina to try and not only experience the thrill of the catch, but have an opportunity to participate in several catch contests as well. Prizes for first, second and third place for the longest fish caught, regardless of species, will be awarded in age groups of 3 to 6, 7 to 10 and 11 to 14 years. Judges will be on hand to make sure measurements are accurate. The event brings between 80 to 100 young fishers each year, Hightower said. Last year's event was pushed back due to the pandemic, but in lieu of it, a 4-hour virtual version was held Aug. 8 at the lake that drew more than 30 children, each of whom received a participation prize. 2019’s event saw an early threat of rain, but it didn’t deter the nearly 80 young fishers and their families from enjoying a day at the lake. Participants got a T-shirt and also got some bait to help reel in their catch after the blare of the starting horn. A raffle, lunch, game bags for the youngest children, and a casting contest for the older children kept the fun going after all of the fishing was over. The bags and casting contests will return for this year's event but another part of the event won’t, due to the pandemic. Participants won’t be able to cook up their catch on the grill. In 2019, Brantley Welch caught the Largest Fish among the 3-to-6 age group, and among the field, with a 17.5-inch largemouth bass. Kendall Lindley caught a 16-inch walleye to lead the 7-to-10 age group, and Javier Mateo and Isabella Conder tied with a 15-inch largemouth bass in the 11-to-14 age group. Mateo and Evan Erbsen caught the most fish in 2019 with six each. Presley Pacaccio and Paige Erbsen tied for top honors in the casting contest, and Bo Christiansen won the bags contest. "The derby is fun for the kids and family, it includes fishing, games, trophies for the winners, lunch and raffle prizes," Fishing Club Secretary Mike Bykowski said. "The derby is a great event." Registration for the event will begin at 9 a.m. and fishing will start at 10 a.m., followed by games at 11 a.m. and an awards presentation at noon. Word is getting out about “Northwest Illinois’ best-kept secret,” and that’s got more and more people coming to Lake Carroll, whether it’s for a home, or a home away from home
If it feels like you’ve seen more new faces in the places around Lake Carroll, you’re right. A growing number of buyers are pulling up the “For Sale” signs at houses in the lakeside community almost as fast as real estate agents can put them down. The proof is in the numbers: There were only 10 homes for sale as this issue of Lake Lifestyle’s was heading to press April 10. A glance at real estate ads in this magazine tell a similar tale. Flipping through a recent issue readers saw ads full of properties, but just as full with “SOLD” or “PENDING” splashed across the photos. Some agencies have also been trying to entice people to list their properties with offers of free market value estimates. In a Q&A in the March issue of Lake Lifestyle, Mary VanRaden, Lake Carroll’s accounts receivable supervisor, said there’s been a rush in recent months on lake properties. It started last year — “it was booming,” she said, with 20 to 30 lots a month changing hands — an increase she attributes to the pandemic that took hold last year and still hasn’t let go. “Everyone wanted out of the city, and out here,” she said.

Tom Miller has sold property at Lake Carroll for almost 30 years, and the Lake Carroll Realty broker and owner said he’s never been more busy with transferring homes and lots than in the 15 months since the COVID-19 pandemic reached its way to Illinois. “People migrated here from the rural suburbs because they felt better,” he said. “It’s a safer environment for them, coming from there. Out here, they feel better.” Lake Carroll is a less densely populated area, so when the pandemic hit people were concerned about being close to a lot of people, said Amy Barnes, broker and owner of Barnes Realty. “Lake Carroll was the perfect escape from a more densely populated area,” she said. “Many people were now able to work from home so it didn’t matter whether they were working from Naperville or Lake Carroll; they could get their jobs done.”

The Eastland School District, with an elementary school in Shannon and a junior-senior high school in Lanark, saw its enrollment jump by about 50 kids because of the migration, Miller said. “You’ve got a lot of people who live in the western suburbs who have part-time homes out here,” Miller said. “When the pandemic hit, they quit going back to their suburban home and they stayed at Lake Carroll. In addition, several parttime residents decided to make the switch to full-time residency, said Cyndy Griffin, broker at Fawnridge Realty. “People who were looking for second homes to begin with, with the rates coming down and not being able to travel, it all kind of came together where they wanted a place close to home to get away to,” she said. There were seven homes – with about as many pending sales as of early April – and seven lots sold in the first 2 months of 2021, a significant jump from three homes and one lot in the first 2 months of 2019 and four homes and one lot in 2020. The combined number of homes and lots sold between 2010 and 2019 averaged around 80 per year, with more homes being sold than lots in each year starting in 2016; that year saw the first three-figure mark in the number of combined home and lot sales, 66 homes and 34 lots for an even 100.

That’s because demand has been up for lots and homes, driven by a desire to get away from the hustle and bustle — and closer contact with people during a pandemic — of cities, low interest rates, and the allure of the scenic lakeside community. Sales in 2020 far exceeded previous years, with 83 homes and 80 lots sold. Some Realtors’ total sales numbers grew by almost 50%, and some even reached ten figures during 2020. While lots in general have been slow to sell because of the recent rise in the cost of construction materials, lots along the waterfront and those with deeded boat slips are faring much better in sales than other lots. It’s tough to get a good read on the future, Miller said, but he and the rest of the community’s Realtors are ready to take on that challenge. “The challenge is finding the inventory to sell today,” Miller said. “We only have a limited number and people aren’t selling them. The challenge right now is finding the product for the consumer.” As for interest rates, they’re expected to remain flat through the year — but there’s no guarantee. Realtors recommend staying in touch to stay on top of the rate’s ups and downs during a fluid economy. Will all this change once the fear of the pandemic recedes? It’s tough to tell, but local agents say that regardless of the supply, there’ll always be a demand for what Lake Carroll offers. “Market trends are difficult to predict,” Barnes said, but “Lake Carroll and our entire area have so much to offer. If interest rates remain low and people can continue to work from home, our rural way of life will be attractive to many for the foreseeable future.”
