ake Carroll’s website promises that people who travel its trails will never get the same ride twice. It couldn’t be more right this year. That’s because Lake leaders never had to deal with the fallout of a worldwide pandemic before. As warmer weather settles in, Lake Carroll ATV enthusiasts are gearing up for the season, itching to hit the trails and the great outdoors – and while the COVID-19 crisis hasn’t put the brakes on trail traffic, it has prompted Lake leaders to urge caution. While the 14 1/2-mile trail that wends around the lake opened for traffic March 24, riders have been asked to take their foot off the pedal if they get too close to their fellow trail users. That goes for other trail travelers, too: keep your distance, whether you’re walking, hiking, pedaling or horseback riding.

Lake Carroll’s trail system offers several challenges for the offroaders, some mild and some messy. “There are some locations that have large mud pits that young and old like to take their chance of getting through – especially after a good rain storm,” Club President Jim Splitt said.
“The Trail Club supports the actions of the State of Illinois as well as the Lake Carroll Board of Directors,” said Lake Carroll Trail Club President Jim Splitt. “Riders are encouraged to maintain a safe distance from each other.” This advisory is just one more step Lake leaders are taking to keep the trail safe for everyone. As far as fun – the trail takes care of that itself. What draws many patrons to Lake Carroll’s trail is the unique amenities it offers, helping it live up to the promise: “never the same ride twice.” “There are several creeks you can go through or take a bridge across,”Splitt said. “The handicaps also have many hills, forested and open areas, and there are some locations that have large mud pits that young and old like to take their chance of getting through – especially after a good rain storm.”

Lake Carroll outdoor enthusiasts also can enjoy a stop near the Lake Carroll Equestrian area to see the horses; or they can grab a snack, ice cream or fill up the gas tank at the Trailside Inn. The west marina and shelter behind the dam also serve as excellent picnic areas, and there’s plenty of wildlife along the way, from critters scampering on the ground to birds flitting about above. The trail has several access points. While the main entrance is located on Lake Carroll Boulevard, other entrances are located by the west marina and the campground, Peace and Quiet Road, Zier
Road, Trailside and Timber Ridge Road. Although the trail is open daily from dawn until dusk, and night rides are normally prohibited, the Trail Club does sponsor an annual night ride in the fall to let people see a whole different side of nature. In the summer, the club sponsors a Poker Run, where riders pick up cards along the trail vying for a winning hand. A winning hand isn’t all that’s in the cards for Lake Carroll trail users – there’s fun and adventure set against a scenic backdrop. Up, down and all around, the trail system always leads users to a good time.

• In order to use the trail all ATVs must be owned and insured by a community member and have an ATV vehicle sticker displayed. • ATV trail users must be at 18 years old, or 16 if accompanied by an adult Lake Carroll member or guests of an adult Lake resident. • All ATV riders must carry proof of completing Lake Carroll’s ATV quiz and wear helmets and eye protection. • An orange safety flag also is required for each motorized vehicle and riders must maintain single file lines on the right side of the designated path and not exceed 30 mph. • Reckless ATV driving is prohibited and Lake Carroll Security patrol the trails to enforce the rules with the possibility of fines for violators.

LANARK – Before you hit the dusty trail, you want to make sure you don’t hit anything else. That’s why safety checks are always important, especially before that first ride of the year. As the COVID crisis drags on, people can’t wait to hop on their ATVs – the feel of that horsepower galloping off the road – but if your steel steed isn’t up to the task, the ride could be risky; but you can reduce the risk by following some simple rules of the off-road. Jeff Lessma, president of Eastland Motor Sports in Lanark, said that when it comes to staying safe, the key is to check, check, check – and check some more. “If the unit is stored over the winter, the customer should first check all fluid levels to ensure nothing leaked over the winter. They should also check tire pressures – that’s probably the most neglected – check all of the controls to make sure they function correctly for safety reasons. Also, they need to check their air filter system, as this is the most likely place for mice and other rodents to build nests over the winter.”

In 1997, it relocated to Lanark where business picked up speed; by 2007, it had moved into a newly built store to meet the demand of ATV’s and UTV’s growing popularity. “Most people use their ATVs and UTVs year round for hunting, fishing, plowing snow, and other fun activities,” Lessman said. • Check your lights, front to back. • Speaking of lights, remember to run with your headlights on while on the trail, even though it’s daytime. • Check your tires for cuts, missing chunks, exposed cords, and tread depth – and don’t forget the tire pressure. Low-pressure, wide profile tires used on ATV’s can fool you. They can appear properly inflated when they are not. Inflate to the pressure shown on the sidewall or, better, in the machine operator’s manual. • Inspect the brakes. Are there any leaks in the brake lines? Is the brake pedal firm when you depress it? or someone who doesn’t consider himself an office person, Joe Rush has a pretty big office. It’s about 5,000 acres – and the office water cooler? It’s a 640-acre lake. Rush is the lake manager for Lake Carroll, a role he’s taken on twice, first from 2001 to 2006, and again starting in 2012.

In his role as a caretaker of the state’s largest private lake and its 14,000-acre watershed, Rush helps manage its ecosystem by monitoring aquatic plants and managing invasive species, keeping an eye on water quality, investigating erosion, stabilizing the shoreline, and reducing sediment to keep Carroll County’s crown jewel shining. He also oversees the lake’s fish hatchery, one of the few private fisheries in the state where walleyes are spawned, raised and released back into the lake. Rush, a professional lake manager and biologist, previously worked for Lake Carroll as its full-time lake manager from 2001 to 2006 before taking another job and eventually starting his own consulting company, JadEco Consultation & Management. “In 2011, Lake Carroll management called me and said, ‘We need your help,’”Rush said. He then started working with the lake again in 2012. Rush, 45, says he grew up in the “concrete jungle,” originally hailing from just north of Rockford, in Machesney Park. But it was another park that helped pave the way out of that concrete jungle and into the great outdoors. “I started off at junior college at Rock Valley, and was almost through my associate in engineering and I was acing everything, but I decided that I wanted to be outdoors. I didn’t want to be in an office my whole life because I’m an outdoors kid. When I was growing up, Rock Cut State Park (in Loves Park) was the place that created me,” Rush said. “Rock Cut is where I got to be the nature guy.” Rush changed his major to life sciences and after earning his associate degree transferred to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale where he completed a bachelors in zoology and a masters in zoology and fisheries management. “When I studied there, I studied under some of the best names in the industry, people who wrote the books that other guys use to teach people like me,” he said. SIU is also where he heard about the opportunity with Lake Carroll. “The opportunity came for me to come up here. The main chairman of the department came to me and said ‘Hey, this is back home for you’ and for me in the fisheries management field. I never ever thought I’d come back home. This gave me an opportunity,” Rush said.

During his second time as lake manager, Rush has turned that opportunity into an impressive list of accomplishments. Among them, he’s … • helped improve the lake’s aquatic plant treatment and management, giving lakefront owners some relief from dense aquatic plants around their docks, lifts, and swim areas; • worked to improve sediment management in the lake; • oversaw dam improvements to improve residents’ access to the lake in summer months; • developed stocking programs to combat the invasive zebra mussel; • applied for federal grant assistance for watershed management planning; • and he’s helped ensure that the fishery is stocked with a diverse SUBMITTED mix of fish. Rush also likes to slow down when he can, and take time to enjoy moments outdoors – fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, and traveling. In one of his Lake Carroll News columns Rush said his goal is to not simply maintain the lake from season to season, but to keep it healthy for years to come. “First of all, our lake is a living, dynamic ecosystem, composed of myriad chemical, physical, and biological relationships,” he wrote. “This is an intricate system where the interactions all play from one another and are intertwined as a matrix, not a linear relationship. Each affects one another differently.” Another component that’s intertwined in that matrix is Rush himself. As sure as the fish that call the lake home or the plants that put down roots, he plays a role in an ecosystem that’s been growing and evolving for nearly a half-century. As Rush pointed out in that column, the lake is celebrating its 48th birthday this year, and if he has anything to say about it, when it hits the big 5-0, it’ll be a happy birthday indeed.

Michael is a fine-art landscape photographer who admires the likes of Ansel Adams and other artists, and Patricia writes about their family and gardens. Many of their customers are fellow artists, too, who use the lumber the Johnsons supply to create their own works of art. “One of the most fascinating things is all the fantastic woodworkers we’ve met,” Patricia said. Visitors to the Johnsons’ home at 6480 Daggert Road west of Chadwick may find themselves greeted by Roxie, the family’s dog. Inside, the home features photographs by Michael and other artists, as well as a coffee table made by a customer, and other items made from wood processed at the mill. Michael, 70, grew up about 40 miles northwest of Chicago, and followed his interest in art to Shimer College decades ago when it was still at the Mount Carroll campus. “My aesthetic is more 17th-century Dutch and Flemish,” Michael said. He found that the Driftless Area of the upper Midwest – a region in parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois, including Carroll County, that escaped glaciers’ flattening effects during the Ice Age and which features steep, forested ridges and deep river valleys – fits his aesthetic.

In 1973, he bought 40 acres of timber on Daggert Road and started building a house there. A short time later, he met Patricia and they married in 1974. The couple developed a deep interest in stewardship of the natural world, and began planting trees and studying sustainable forestry. They started their lumber business in 1996, after a storm snapped off 50 to 60 trees, and they were faced with a choice: “Either call loggers or do it ourselves,” Michael said. The Johnsons built a kiln and a small mill, and their lumber business grew from there. Today, they have about 24 types of trees on 70 acres, with about 16 to 20 types for sale. Michael said they’ve planted about 30,000 to 40,000 trees since they moved in, though none of them are available yet for harvesting. “We don’t know what will be valuable in 80 years. Our first thing is stewardship, with the second being diversity,” he said. The Johnsons have planted a wide variety of tree species, among them Southern trees such as tulip poplar, Shumard oak, Kentucky coffee trees, and some sycamores. Of the trees the Johnsons do harvest, they currently have a large amount of ash due to the number of trees killed by the emerald ash borer. They also have cherry, white oak, walnut and other species. The Johnsons divide their labor. Michael works in the forest, runs the mill, and manages the equipment, while Patricia works with the customers and manages the office.
From bandsaw to board room Some businesses can crank out inventory in a matter of minutes; for lumber dealers, it can take decades. The journey from sprig to tree is a long one, but once the tree is felled, things start to speed up. Logs are transported to the mill, where a giant bandsaw (left) slices them. The wood makes its way to a kiln (below right, where Michael checks on boards), and eventually, to the Johnson Hardwoods sales floor, otherwise known as the board room. The lumber is handled about 27 different times during the process.

Michael said his experience in the lumber business comes from reading, making mistakes, and reading more. Johnson Creek Hardwoods keeps a selection of boards, bookmatched tops (sawing the wood so two pieces match, like an open book), and live edge lumber (in which the rough edge of the lumber, sometimes bark and all, is kept) on hand, and will open by appointment for customers to view their stock. They also process yard and town trees for customers. According to their website, the Johnsons try to match the species and kind of wood they harvest for specific needs. They trim knots, splits and other flaws from butt logs, or logs from the tree’s base, and trim sapwood from cherry and walnut to get at least one clear heartwood side from the logs. Part of the Johnsons’ secret is air drying logs, down to between 20 to 25% equalized moisture content. The wood is then kiln dries to between 6 and 8%. The wild weather of the last couple years hasn’t been lost on Michael. “This has been the wettest 18 months I’ve ever lived through. The main challenge with the moisture is getting out into the timber and working. Also, usually you have storms that break the trees off. Lately, they’ve been coming out of the ground by the roots because the ground is just
kind of like soup,” he said. Once the wood is dried, the Johnsons surface it with a 24-inch planer to a uniform thickness and smoothness. They also trim the ends to eliminate splits before it’s placed in the boardroom for sale. Matt and Sue Koning’s business, MSK Golf Cars in Amboy, started as a hobby back in the late 1990s after Matt found himself in the drivers seat of a golf cart. An auctioneer by trade, Matt wasn’t looking to get into golf car business. “He actually didn’t mean to buy the first golf car,” said Sue. “He was working the sale at a farm auction as a ringman and ended up with the last bid!”

When they got the car home, Matt started to fiddle around with his new set of little wheels, and he was hooked on a hobby. “My wife told me to get a hobby,”Matt said. “So, I bought more golf cars to modify with lights and other accessories. It was suppose to be about a month-long project for fun. That was about 20 years ago.” Today, that hobby has become a successful business that sells, rents and stores golf cars, specializing in modified and custom-built machines featuring eye-popping designs that bring a touch of style and class to golf courses, or anywhere else golf cars can be found tooling around. The family business also gets a hand from daughters Leah Henert and Cassidy Koning, and son Lane. Rounding out the golf car crew is mechanic Josh Hintz.

Both Josh and Matt are experienced in small engine repair. Josh has been with the business since 2002 and can work on all makes and models, even old HarleyDavidson and Cushman brands. Josh is a “top-notch golf car service tech,” Matt said. Springing from the idea of custom paint jobs for golf cars, it wasn’t long before Matt’s projects blossomed into more elaborate designs. Working a promotional event celebrating GM’s long run of selling cars at auction, Matt was approached about customizing a golf car to resemble a ‘57 Chevy. Other custom designs the family has done include a ‘65 Mustang, a limousine and a Jeep Wrangler. “Over the last 20 years, the number of accessories for golf cars in the secondary market has exploded.” Matt said. “So, there’s quite a bit more options.” Along with that explosive growth in the secondary market has been a boom in business for MSK.

The business has grown from its early days in a garage to an 8-acre complex that features a workshop, showroom and three storage buildings. MSK offers both seasonal and year-round storage options for customers,; this past winter it housed more than 400 golf cars. You don’t have to be a golfer to need a golf car. You can find them on farms and campgrounds, parades, festivals and as transports for outdoor weddings and other events. Many accessories are available, too: cargo boxes, custom paint, chrome wheels, lift kits, stereo systems, and more. And as a growing number of communities allow lowspeed vehicles on their roads, MSK is there to offer modified golf cars that meet the legal requirements to roll down the road. The shop is a licensed dealer for DOT-approved Low Speed Vehicles (LSV), which can be plated and driven on roads at speeds of 30 mph or lower. While things have slowed down a bit due to the recent COVID-19 crisis – many MSK customers are campers who’ve had to camp out at home instead of campgrounds – Matt is confident business will pick up speed again. In the meantime, MSK has been taking precautionary measures by conducting the majority of its business by phone and email. The showroom is open by appointment and his team maintains appropriate distancing. Custom golf carts take anywhere from 1 to 2 months to finish and can cost a few thousand dollars and up, depending on the level of customization. While customizing the
cars lets the crew flex their creative muscles, from custom wheels and paint jobs to underbody LEDs and sound systems, there’s more about this business that Matt loves.
