t’s important to know the types of flags when you’re boating — such as orange for “no wake,” or red with a white stripe for a diver below a boat. Colors are important for Larry and Mercedes Meyers, too: orange for Illinois, red and white for Indiana — and don’t forget the purples and greens and blues and blacks; they’re important, too — and they all mean one thing: family pride. The Lake Carroll couple are the proud grandparents of grandkids whose alma maters are on full display in the rainbow of flags that add splashes of color to their home: 12 in all, hanging from their deck — and they’re going to have to find room for more once the rest of the couple’s 18 grandchildren earn a college degree. The current crop of flags are: Illinois State University, North Central College, Northern Illinois University, Texas Christian University, the University of Texas, Indiana University, Baylor University, the University of Illinois, the University of Houston, Texas Tech University, Duke University and the University of Massachusetts – Amherst.

Long have they waved, these family flags — for about a decade — and they’ve become a familiar sight for neighbors and passersby. They even make it easier to find their house. “When we meet people and they try to pinpoint where we are, we’ll tell them, ‘If you come out of the East Marina, we’re the hexagon house flying the college banners,’” Mercedes said. “Then they know right away.” It’s not uncommon for boaters to slow down to take a look at the flags. “I’ll sit down on the dock when they go by, and they’ll make some comments,” Larry said. “Usually I can tell by how they’re looking at the flags, it gives an indication that they’re interested, and sometime they’ll slow the boat down just to look at them.”

Every day is flag day for Larry and Mercedes Meyers of Lake Carroll, who’ve turned their backyard deck into a pat on the back and a little push for their grandkids. The deck is adorned with more than a dozen college flags from their grandkids’ alma maters. “We put them up each year as recognition of the grandkids’ efforts and their parents’ encouragement,” Mercedes said. “They became symbols of motivation for the younger ones and identity for the older ones.”

Education has long been important to the Meyers, something they’ve passed along to their grandkids Larry, 85, and Mercedes, 82, are retired educators from Westchester, having moved to Lake Carroll full time in 1998. Their 18 grandchildren, ages 18 to 31, come from three states – Illinois, Texas and Philadelphia – and have vacationed with their grandparents on the lakefront off and on over the summers. Of the 18 grandchildren, 15 have graduated from universities or colleges; two grandchildren have master’s degrees, and one has a year to go on her master’s. Two grandchildren still are in college, and the youngest, Mara Schmieder, recently graduated from Eastland High School and has enrolled at the University of Illinois to study communications. Growing up and seeing the flags in her grandparents’ back yard summer after summer was helped Mara realize just how important education is in one’s life. “Growing up, I would always see all of these flags, and all my real successful cousins graduating, getting into sororities and fraternities, and I’ve always just looked up to them,” Mara said. “It’s always been a symbol, every single summer, seeing them makes me love what I want to do after high school.” Larry and Mercedes have three children each in a blended family, and each of them also graduated from college. Their first grandchild, Jeffery Dick, graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2011, where he also was captain of the golf team, and three more – John Meyers, Andrew Dick and Dan Schmie-

der – graduated in 2013. Around that time, their daughter-in-law, Gloria Schmieder, talked with the Meyers about the idea of displaying flags of their grandchildren’s alma maters. It didn’t take long for them to make it happen. “Some people think I’m collecting college flags,” Larry said. “One yelled at me from a boat, ‘Where’s Southern Illinois University?’” Mercedes has had people ask whether the flags represented their favorite college sports, but she’s quick to tell them, and anyone who asks, what the flags are for. “The college banners tell the story of hard work and commitment,” Mercedes said. “After Gloria got this going, we put them up each year as recognition of the grandkids’ efforts and their parents’ encouragement. They became symbols of motivation for the younger ones and identity for the older ones. We are very happy to honor them in this way.” The flags are put up each summer in random order, but somehow, Larry jokes, the University of Illinois always seems to find its way to the middle — no doubt a sense of loyalty to his beloved Illini.

One of Larry’s first experiences with the University of Illinois involved watching a legendary game in Illinois high school basketball history at Huff Hall: tiny Hebron High School’s 1952 state championship win in double-overtime against the much larger Quincy High School. He enrolled at the U of I two years later. Today, Mara is following in his footsteps after narrowing her choice between Indiana and Illinois, the last of the grandkids to pick a college — but that doesn’t mean what Larry started will come to end; there’s always the greatgrandkids, after all. For now, though her choice to go to U of I ties

the college with Indiana among the grandkids’ choice. “It was either Indiana or Illinois, and those are the two biggest flags there,” Mara said. “My grandpa went and had a million stories about the U of I that are always told over and over again.” Each grandchild gets a flag from their campus, and brings them over when they visit. Replacements come on occasion. Sometimes the grandkids will have their pictures taken underneath their flag. Such gatherings were almost weekly in the Meyers’ four-bedroom hexagon house, but now that the kids have grown up, the gatherings are a little less frequent – but no less special. The weekends of little children running around the rooms and the deck, playing sports and activities in the backyard and being out on the lake are memories that are near and dear to Grandma and Grandpa. That, and figuring out sleeping arrangements with beds, blow-up mattresses, and even a tent near a firepit on occasion. “This place was their summer destination all of those growing-up years,” Mercedes said. “They bonded with their cousins very well. Now we’re seeing them stand up at each other’s weddings, and two of the girls recently graduated.

“We look back now, and it was so much fun. I don’t pageXX know how we all fit in here, but we did.” Bob Schmieder’s two children represent the Baylor and Texas Tech flags. He enjoys having his children’s legacies share space on the deck with their cousins’. “Nobody wanted to not have their flag. We had five, then six, seven, it’s like, ‘I got to be one of them.’ It really became a symbol of success in our family. It’s a little bit of forced pressure, if you will, but says, ‘Hey, you should go to school and make something out of your life.’ They all have, every one of them.” Like his mother and stepfather, Bob also gets a kick out of the many folks who slow their boat down along the lake to take a peek at all of the colors on the flags. “They like repeating the flags names: ‘Baylor!’ ‘Indiana!’ ‘Illinois!’ When they see their own, that’s when you get a little bit of excitement, just like how you look for yourself in a picture of a wedding, everyone’s looking for their own flag. “People on the boats get inspired. They see the flags, and maybe even they want to have something like that in their life.” Mara works at the West Marina and often hears conversa-

tions among boaters about that “one house with the flags.” Then she tells them the story. “Everyone here on the lake just thinks we have random colleges just put up, but they aren’t random, they’re there for a reason,” Mara said. “It definitely makes the house stand out on the lake.” The older kids have set the set the bar for the younger ones, Mercedes said. “Growing up, I saw all of these flags, and the bar was set real high for me.” Mara said. “It’s a high bar. All of the grandchildren are extremely smart, and I enjoyed seeing them graduate.” The flag display has a “feeling of ownership,” Larry said, and is “a matter of pride for our family.” He and Mercedes hope that one of the grandkids will keep it going for the next generation. After all, the flags are proof that college education takes people a long way in life. “We valued it,” Mercedes said. “We encouraged it. It wasn’t handed to them, though. They all had to really work to make it all happen.”

ake Carroll isn’t just a place to call home for its few thousand residents – they can also do some shopping, too. There’s gas, food and sundries at the convenience store; golf gear at the pro shop, and each Saturday during the summer, a gathering of some of the community’s creative crafters and artisans at the Farmers Market in front of Plumtree Lodge. Most farmers markets are full of locally produced food – garden goods and family recipes — but Lake Carroll’s is a little different. While it started out as traditional farmers market a few years ago — and people can still find the occasional tasty treats — these days its more geared toward shoppers who are in the market for some crafts. Situated between the campground and the rest of the community, the market has two rows of vendors who have plenty of

space this year to arrange their booths in order to be mindful of social distancing due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The increased space gives vendors like Nancy McCormick enough room to include more of her wood signs and decor. She’s sold at the market since the beginning, and has seen a lot of good changes over the years. “It’s a nice thing that we have in Lake Carroll,” McCormick said. “You meet a lot of nice people every weekend. You get loyal customers and you get new customers, and then they recommend somebody.” For the first couple of years of the market, there were only about 10 vendors. The local Mennonites used to sell vegetables in those early years before establishing a market of their own, but the occasional cobs of corn will still come up some weeks, McCormick said.

She and fellow Homewood Creations partner, Karrie Muscolino, make signs out of local barn wood, and design them and other household decorations with drawings and slogans with a Lake Carroll touch to them. They’re popular with not only residents, but especially campers. “A lot of the campground users will buy the signs for the campground site,” McCormick said. “It’s neat to see that people enjoy it.” Stephanie Stremp and Lori Villasenor also work together

to create their own personalized items and sell them at the market. Once the two found common interests, they worked together and bounced ideas off each other to create their own signs, cups and other goods, including items made with epoxy molds. “I did this last year and did more of the wood signs,” Stremp said. “Lori and I were just learning last summer how to make these. As I felt good doing them, the more I felt good putting them out.”

Stremp also has some Lake Carroll-centric items, such as a travel mug that advertises the lake as “unsalted, shark-free.” The Lake Carroll items are hot sellers for her, she said, and getting to know many residents has been an added benefit of setting up at the market. “It’s close to home,” Stremp said. “Meeting a lot of the people that live in our community is nice.” Villasenor agrees. “I like meeting people,” she said “It’s fun. I always ask people where they’re from, which is kind of cool because I’m a part-time resident. Sometimes you meet people close to where you are.” While some vendors are still new to the craft world, Gary Geahos has spent decades mastering his skills with his stained glass. His largest works are pieces for doorways: transoms above doors, and sidelights on the sides of doors. He said he enjoys incorporating the Prairie School method into his work, a design popularized by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

“It not only gives them an aesthetic, but it also gives them privacy from people looking from the street,” Geahos said of his doorway pieces. “People would complain about other people who would look inside, so it gave me an idea to start doing this.” Geahos also designs candle holders, lights and lamp shades out of stained glass. One of his sons lives in Barcelona, Spain, the location of the Sagrada Familia “Gaudi” basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The yet-to-becompleted church, which started construction more than 100 years ago, is a place Geahos would like to visit when it’s finally completed and take in its stained glass window designs, which he only has seen from the outside. “They’re beautiful,” he said. Kids are tapping into their creative side, too.

Most of their work is done on different sizes of canvas in either paint or marker. Most encompass a variety of different designs and colors, and sometimes they’ll also make something that is tailored specifically to the lake, such as a “Lake Carroll, Est. 1972” canvas drawing sold at the market on the Fourth of July weekend. The girls also have sold Girl Scout cookies and rubber band bracelets some weeks, and together they net about $100 from their creations. One week saw the girls make as much as $200. “They’ll be at home all week drawing, and it keeps them busy instead of watching TV all day or on their phone,” Saladino said. “They’ll go to the craft stores, see what’s on sale, and make stuff by themselves. “They have fun. They don’t want to leave until the very end.” And they’re not the only ones: Shoppers have a hard time leaving, too, drawn in by not only the goods, but the good company.

By Cody Cutter | Sauk Valley Media olling hills, colorful meadows, groves of trees, and the state’s largest manmade private lake right in the middle of it all — Lake Carroll residents are surrounded by nature’s beauty as far as the eye can see, but if you were to look back in time, the lay of the land looked a lot different. That’s because nature’s beauty got a facelift when developers turned part of the Prairie State into a private community where members could be let in on Northern Illinois’ best kept secret. Next year will be Lake Carroll’s golden anniversary — 50 years — since the final acre of earth was moved and the first houses built. As time marches on, it will become harder for people, and even the lake’s charter members, to remember what the 5,000 acres of land in Freedom and Cherry Grove townships used to look like. Fishes swam through the former landscape long before the lake was there, but it wasn’t in the 640 acres that would become the community’s centerpiece. A tributary of the east branch of the Plum River flowed through the land, about as wide as it is today when the lake drains to the west toward Savanna and the Mississippi River. The winding roads and lanes residents drive on today also weren’t around back then, but other roads around and leading up to it have taken folks to and from their destinations for more than 150 years. Mapping these roads, and the homesteads they led to, was important as more and more people began to settle in Carroll County. The first official map of the county was made in 1893 by the D. W. Ensign and Company of Chicago. For the first half of the 20th century, new plat maps were made every so often, but then the maps became more widely available by the 1960s. Wonder what maps of the area looked like before it was Lake Carroll? Let’s look at a few of them ...

The road along the bottom of this Freedom Township map from 1961 is Zier Road, while Keltner Road meanders through the top of the map. The two north-south roads on the map, as well as the road connecting them in the middle, are long gone, replaced with the lake and resculpted land. dark, ragged line on the top left corner of this map is the east branch of the Plum River; the dark line going left-to-right on the map is a tributary of that which now leads to the current lake. Zier Road is along the bottom of the map, and Carter Road is lined up along the bottom left (named for the Carter family that settled on the property where the junction of the river is). John Keltner owned the Keltner Creamery for many years near the river, north of the tributary, and established an early Post Office there. 1893. In Cherry Grove Township, several properties were owed by the Zier Family, who would have a road named for them along the southern edge of Lake Carroll. The crossroads with state Routes 72 and 73 also is called Zier Corners. Another name from the map, that of Van Brocklin, also has a road named after it west of Freeport. The property then owned by Phoebe R. Holmes in section No. 9 is still a family farm – Holmes’ descendants operate the farm today at Sturtevant Feedlots, and it’s been in the family for 201 years. t’s fall. It’s Friday night. What were you doing when you were in high school? If you were at a football game, you’re not alone. For many, sports and entertainment were a big part of growing up, and high school football games were the place to be. Whether you were butting pads with the opposition, or cheering on the players from the stands or sidelines, the excitement of watching teams tussle and tackle their way to a touchdown was tough to beat — and it still is. Even during a time when we have access to anything and everything at our fingertips in a wireless world, we’re still hardwired to enjoy football Fridays — it’s part of the Midwest’s DNA — and that team spirit is alive and well at local high schools, where they’re getting geared up for gridiron action, with the first games scheduled to be played Aug. 27. High school football is a big deal in northwest Illinois, and especially around Lake Carroll, which usually has a few football players suit up for the Eastland-Pearl City Wildcatz football team each year. The two school’s football programs became a cooperative more than 25 years ago, and are competitive each year in the tough Northwest Upstate Illini Conference. Wildcatz head coach Jared McNutt has both coached and played the game against the top programs in the conference. He quarterbacked the Warren Warriors as a student and coached them to its first playoff win in 2015 – 3 years before taking over at EPC.

“The competition in our conference is unlike any other conference in my opinion,” McNutt said. “You will see some of the best football on Friday nights in our area. Our kids are very knowledgeable about the game, and they’re coached up to perform at their very best. The kids play hard and we have some athletes that are the best in the state in our little corner of the state.” Among EPC and the seven small public school districts surrounding it — Forreston, Lena-Winslow, Milledgeville, Polo, River Ridge of Hanover, Stockton and West Carroll of Savanna — such talent has produced a whopping 14 state championships; and that number is larger among all of the schools in the NUIC. The number of state titles also includes three from Aquin Central Catholic High School in Freeport. All told, the NUIC’s current roster of schools have combined to win 22 state championships since Stockton won the first in 1978. The Blackhawks have the most wins among all schools in the conference, with more than 600; 279 of them under longtime coach John O’Boyle, who retired as the winningest high school football coach in history by the 1990s.

One of O’Boyle’s star players in the 1990s, Matt Leitzen, enters his second year as head coach of the Blackhawks after a successful stint at West Carroll. He, like McNutt, has seen the competitiveness of the local football teams from both an athlete and coaching perspective. “I think physical play is the first thing that stands out to me when I think about NUIC football,” Leitzen said. “Every night you know that you are going to have to play physical on both sides of the ball if you are going to put yourself in a position to win.” Forreston head coach Keynon Janicke also played and coached in the conference, but all for his hometown team. He was an assistant coach for two of the Cardinals’ trio of Class 1A state titles, and was promoted to the head coaching position this summer. From the sideline, Janicke has seen throngs of Forreston faithful come out to the state championship games when they’re playing — and sometimes even a band of fans from surrounding schools — to wish their conference colleagues well. “The community support is also tremendous throughout the area,” Janicke said. “Just taking a look at the 1A state game each year, the team that is usually representing the NUIC never fails to bring a full crowd that sometimes outnumbers bigger schools.”

In many ways, Illinois is a topheavy state, with the Chicago Metro Area boasting about half of the state’s population. Larger and more affluent schools give students there a wealth of opportunities to succeed in many areas of sports and education. High and above other metro conferences is the Chicago Catholic League, with state powers such as Mount Carmel, St. Rita of Cascia, Loyola Academy, Montini and Providence; as well as Joliet Catholic, which leads the state with 14 state titles. If there was a smaller school equivalent to the mighty CCL in terms of consistent success among its member schools, the NUIC is a fair representation. The difference between large and small schools, though, is noticeable. In large schools with many students that participate on the team, most athletes look closer to what a college or pro team looks like in their respective positions. Smaller school rosters, however, may have a smaller athlete playing on the line, or a shorter person as a quarterback — but that doesn’t keep them from succeeding.

Most small-school football players play two ways on the line of scrimmage, and that’s typically because roster sizes are small to begin with. Athletes have to learn not just one position, but sometimes two, or as many as five if push comes to shove any given Friday. The work ethic, along with the success that results from it, is what makes the NUIC special, Janicke said. “Success is always the easy answer, but it’s definitely special to see the amount of kids at all of these different small schools who are willing to sacrifice and dedicate their time and energy to work together as a team. And we still have kids who are playing both ways, and the ball is still being ran on the ground more times than not. “Football is just different here, and it’s full of great kids being guided by great coaches.”

Eight is enough The NUIC will transition into a non-divisional setup this football season after spending its entire history with two divisions, split at times by either enrollment or geography. Several of the smallest schools in the conference have struggled to fill their rosters, but the recent creation of an 8-man football league allows these schools to play the game without utilizing more athletes. Milledgeville, Polo, Aquin and River Ridge play the 8-man game, which is played with one less player in each of the three defensive groups, two fewer offensive linemen

and one less offensive skill player. This format was more common in rural Illinois schools before it was phased out in the 1970s, only to come back when North Shore County Day in Winnetka fielded an 8-man program in 2015 (unfortunately, however, the Raiders dropped football entirely 2 years later when the numbers continued to worsen). The rural 8-man programs are fighting to keep football alive in their schools, but in an area that has been successful in the sport, great results continue to happen. Polo won the 8-man state championship in 2019, and River Ridge finished with the best record, 6-0, among Illinois’ 8-man teams in a shortened season this past spring in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Don’t let the absence of positions on the field fool you. “From an outside perspective, I believe you would see that, despite having three fewer players per team on the field, the play is very similar to 11-man,” River Ridge head coach Doug Nicholas said. “The game still comes down to blocking, tackling and executing on both sides of the ball. There are some very skilled and talented players on the field.” Aquin and Milledgeville will play their first 8-man seasons this fall. Joining them among NUIC schools are Amboy-LaMoille, Ashton-Franklin Center and Orangeville. West Carroll will transition into a junior varsity program this season, playing games against lower-level teams from fellow conference schools.

The NUIC’s 10-team makeup of 11-man teams ranges from programs the size of Class 3A DurandPecatonica (438 students) and Stockton (174). “This is always a tough conference where teams are constantly fighting to get better to either get to the top or stay at the top,” Janicke said. “We definitely have our hands full with our schedule, but our kids are ready to get back into our normal routine and start competing again.” McNutt looks for the same in his athletes, too. “I think what stands out the most about the NUIC is now with the schedule change, teams will have to be at their best week in and week out,” McNutt said. No matter what school, style of football, be it run or pass, format or especially size, there’s certainly plenty of entertainment value in watching young adults learn to find success on the field — all through the skills that football gives them. “Where else can you spend $5 on Friday night and be entertained?” Leitzen said. “In our area, you can drive less than 30 minutes almost every Friday night and watch a great football game.” As for how Lake Carroll’s hometown program will shape up this coming season ... “We have some experience coming back and are very excited to see the product we can put on the field,” McNutt said. “Our defense should be tough with our size and speed. The conference will be tough every single week with the larger schools staying 11-man and smaller schools going to 8-man.”
