When Jeremy Allen saw that Lake Carroll needed a group to honor those who served, he did what any good soldier would do: Come up with a plan and execute it. Now, Lake Carroll has a new club for veterans, and those who support them — and it hasn’t taken long for people to join its ranks

veteran’s pride is in a class by itself. Serving your country isn’t just a job, it’s an adventure that civilians have a hard time relating to. Once a service member’s tour of duty with their brothers and sisters in arms is over, they still like to assemble the troops for some camaraderie, conversation and sense of community. That’s why there are veterans groups in communities from coast to coast that offer a place where those who served can gather. But until recently, Lake Carroll wasn’t one of those communities — that is, until, one of its residents took on the task of giving his fellow veterans, and those who support them, just such a place. Jeremy Allen came to Lake Carroll a couple years ago, and recently he began to notice something missing in his new home: a place where veterans, and their friends and families, could come together. Once he saw the need, he was a man on a mission, and it didn’t take him long to accomplish it. A few short months later, the Lake Carroll Veterans Club was born. Allen, an Army veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, started the club this summer. It’s a group where veterans, as well as their friends and family, can meet to talk about their shared experiences, help one another, and educate the community about the role the military plays in everyday life.

It hasn’t taken long for the club to make an impact on the community. “There was nothing as far as a memorial service for the fallen soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen for the Memorial Day weekend that Lake Carroll did, and I felt that had to change,” Allen said. “It’s not just parties and barbecue and stuff. We have to have something in remembrance of what the day, what the weekend, is.” One of the most visible changes the club has helped make: a display of military flags on Hole No. 8 of the golf course. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard – and soon, the Space Force — flags are on display, and a POW/MIA flag has been installed near the tee. Allen got the OK for the display from Golf Pro Jason Hill and Golf Committee Chairman Bill Green to make it happen. “I went out golfing one day and took them out there,” Allen said. “Hole eight is dedicated to the military, active military and veterans.” The display also was the site of a remembrance ceremony on Aug. 28 for 13 soldiers — 11 Marines and one each from the Army and Navy — who died during the Kabul airport attack in Afghanistan just 2 days prior. Allen spoke, and read the names of the fallen soldiers before “Taps” was played. Black ribbons were draped over the Army, Navy and Marine Corps flags to represent the losses. In the 2 months since becoming an official club in Lake Carroll, on the very day of the Kabul attacks, more than 60 people have joined — veterans, friends, family — thanks to word-of-mouth, signup sheets and information booths and community events.

Friends and family are an important part of the club’s support troops. “There are a lot of people here who support the veterans,” Club Quartermaster Tom Meyer said. “We formed the club, and yeah, there’s already the American Legion and the VFW, which are strictly veterans. We didn’t want it to be restricted to just veterans.” Allen is the club’s commander, and Ed Pottle serves as executive officer. YouTube at https://tinyurl. “I kind of jumped on com/k35mwzcj the bandwagon and thought, ‘What can I do to help?’” Meyer, a Vietnam-era Air Force veteran who has been at the Lake for 7 years, said he, like many others, has found the social nature of being a club member quite enjoyable. “One of the things that we all agree on is that there’s a camaraderie in the services that you don’t find anywhere else,” Meyer said. “When you’re around other veterans, you start to feel that again. You don’t even have to know them, you just know that there’s that camaraderie and that warm feeling of being in this together, we back each other up, and we’re there for each other.” Serving in the military is no easy task. Many veterans have left the service with a mountain of challenges ahead of them — some medical and some mental — and even after many years, those challenges can remain. Allen, who served from 2000-08, including a tour in Iraq’s heated “Sunni Triangle” — places such as Ramadi, Habbaniya and Fallujah — from 2003-04, wants to help veterans deal with the emotions that can be tough to cope with.

Allen’s vision also includes focus groups, having representatives from Veteran’s Affairs and psychologists to speak at meetings, and having roundtable discussions where veterans can talk about their experiences. Separation anxiety, Allen said, is a big issue for veterans getting back to civilian life. “One thing that every veteran goes through, whether you’ve been in combat or were overseas at some point, for a short time or a long time, there’s a separation anxiety,” he said. “Once you get out of the military, you’re a lost puppy. You’re once again starting over with your life. You’re not sure what avenues you want to go. Definitely a high percentage of veterans go through something of that sort.” One of the best ways to take big challenges head-on is through networking. Pottle, who retired as a chief warrant officer 4 after 40 years active and reserve in the Air Force, said that networking is “very important” to a veteran. “The one thing you really learn in the military is networking,” Pottle said. “You know who your brothers are, and your sisters. You depend on them. Same with the Veterans Club here; we network. Tom may know something about the VA that I don’t, Jeremy might know, I might know, or someone else might know. You can get answers, and you can be there to answer the phone if someone has a problem. It’s very important. The camaraderie between veterans is very important to a veteran.” Meyer, an Air Force sergeant from 1966-70, is familiar with how socializing with veterans can help. He has been to weekend coffee get-togethers with Carroll County veterans in Mount Carroll, and it’s that feeling of interaction that he wants to see flourish within the Lake Carroll club. “When you’re in the service, there’s a lot of

discipline, respect and care for each other,” Meyer said. “When you come out, you’re back in this world where you got these [people] who could care less about what you did and where you were. Now you’re mixed back in with this, and it is a transition.” Along with the remembrance ceremony of the Kabul victims, the Veterans Club also had a presentation at the community’s New Member Mixer on Sept. 11. Allen spoke about the club, paid tribute to those who died during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and once more honored the lives of the 13 soldiers who were killed less than a month prior. Allen was an Army recruiter for nearly 3 years, and still finds himself “prospecting” even to this day for the club he helped make a reality. “It’s going to grow,” Allen said. “We just have to nurture it and make sure that we don’t rush things and make oversteps. We want to make sure the Veterans Club is going to be special.”

“If you had to do it all over again, would you?”

For many veterans, the answer is one simple word: “Yes.” Serving one’s country was a hallmark experience in the lives of the many people who marched into service and made sacrifices to defend the flag, honor, and all that the America represents. Lake Carroll is home to an estimated 100 veterans who answered the call to serve their country, either during war or peace time. Although their service has ended, the experience is something they still look back on with pride. Lake Lifestyle asked a few of those veterans what serving in the military meant to them. Sgt. JEREMY ALLEN Army 2000-08

My name is Jeremy Allen. I am the Commander of the newest social club at Lake Carroll, the Lake Carroll Veterans Club. I have been a member here since November of 2018. As a young man growing up on a black-Angus cattle farm in west central Indiana, I knew that there was a higher calling. The farm life just wasn’t what I wanted in my path in life. I joined the United States Army at the age of 21, in March 2000. When I walked into the recruiting office, I knew that day I would become a soldier. My conversation with my recruiter started with: “I want to do something really cool but I’m not so good with heights.” He said, “We have these 70-ton Abrams tanks that don’t leave the ground much.” That’s when I said, “sign me up!” Soon after, I was off to Fort Knox, Kentucky, and completed Armor School in June. My first duty station was Fort Hood, Texas, the largest military installation in the United States. On one early September morning in 2001, our nation was attacked by terrorists. I was on my way

through the gate when the first plane hit Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. While in accountability formation, the second plane hit Tower 2. Then shortly after, the Pentagon was hit. We were ordered to the motor pool, combat-ready our tanks, and deployed to the southern gates of Fort Hood. We were on gate guard duty for 48 hours without contact with family. It was a very tense time.

In the following days, I knew I had made the right choice in life and that my country needed me to defend her and all of our citizens. Although I never deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, I was ordered to South Korea for a “Hardship Duty Tour.” After a year there, I was stationed stateside in Fort Riley, Kansas. After 6 months, Operation Iraqi Freedom was gearing up and my unit deployed there for a 14-month tour from July 2003 to September 2004. Soon after returning from the war, I became an Army recruiter and was lucky enough to be stationed 20 miles away from my childhood farm. Being back home with my family helped me realize it was time to hang up my uniform and move on to another chapter. Looking back now. Would I do it again? Absolutely! I loved serving my country and had a lot of fun doing what I did. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Fury” you’ll recognize this phrase: Being a tanker on an M1A2 SEP Abrams Tank is “The best job I ever had!” The people I met were and still are my friends, brothers, and sisters! The military community sticks together like glue. Bringing the Lake Carroll Veterans Club into our community will reflect that statement. Lake Carroll, in itself, is a community that sticks together and comes together when we need one another.

Sgt. TOM ME YE R Air Force 1966-70

It all started when I was in my first year of college, 1965-66, and looking for a way to pay for college. I commuted to college and, on a whim one day on the way home from school, I decided to stop at the Air Force Recruiters Office to see what this GI Bill was all about. I am not sure what happened in that office that day! I came out signed up on a delayed enlistment program! You might ask, “Why the Air Force?” This was the Vietnam Era, and I have never been much of a gun person, so the Air Force was the logical choice. Yes, serving my country was a small part of my thoughts, but finding a way to pay for college got me involved. Basic training worked on strengthening my physical and mental person. It taught us the value of teamwork, discipline and respecting your authorities and fellow recruits. As I look back, this is where a sense of camaraderie and fellowship that I had never experienced before came to life. To this day, I have not found this same camaraderie and fellowship in any other part of my life other than when I am around fellow veterans.

After basic we went to tech school for our assigned specialty; mine was inventory management specialist. After graduating, we received our first assignments. My assignment was to the 63rd Military Airlift Command at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino California. Our base was a direct support base for sending supplies and equipment to Vietnam and supporting areas. We were a C-141 cargo plane base.

My duties included working with the aircraft mechanics to supply them with the parts that they needed to keep our aircraft flying. Again, the camaraderie and fellowship among my fellow airmen was second to none. Many of us who never received an assignment to a combat zone feel a little guilt since we feel that we did not do all that we could to help the cause. Yes, our fellow combat veterans told us that it takes a whole team to support our efforts and not everyone needs to be in a combat zone. A couple of incredibly special experiences that I had while serving: My two oldest sons were born while I was serving at Norton AFB. My cousin, Al Budzios, who is a Marine, returned from Vietnam through my base and I was there to welcome him home. I will never forget the fact that this was not the same person we sent over a year earlier. He has dealt with post-traumatic stress and Agent Orange for most of his life. He seems to be doing OK now and lives in my hometown of Monroe, Michigan. I will never forget all the fond memories

of my fellow comrades that I served with. I do not want to overlook the letters and cookies that I received from friends and family back home when I first arrived in 1966. These letters and treats meant the world to us. In many cases this was the first time we were away from home and were lonely. My saddest moment was when my cousin, Richard “Butch” Weid, gave it all when he lost his life on May 30, 1970, in Vietnam. The Vietnam Memorial Wall is incredibly special to me since Butch is part of it. I am so honored to have had the opportunity to serve my country. This experience helped me grow up and has taught me to have a profound respect for our country and flag. I, like most veterans, would not hesitate to do it again if that opportunity presented itself. Thank you to all of you who do so much to thank and welcome our returning service members as they return home from their assignments. It means the world to us fellow Veterans that you honor these service members for their time and sacrifices. I am proud to be a USAF veteran.

he men and women who’ve worn their country’s uniform have earned their stars and stripes, but they’ve earned much more. They’ve earned our gratitude and respect. They’ve earned a place on the roads and bridges named in their honor. They’ve earned the days we set aside to celebrate their service and remember their sacrifice. Sometimes, the task of honoring them can be a monumental one, both literally and figuratively. We build monuments in their honor: statues, benches, obelisks — stoic and stalwart reminders that are never off-duty and that stand the test of time. Small and large, ornate and simple, they can be found in village squares and city halls, in our nation’s cities and our nation’s capital. Some are etched with the roll calls of those who paid the ultimate price for freedom. They stand silent, but speak volumes about our pride and appreciation. Several of these monuments can be found in towns and villages a short drive from Lake Carroll. As Veterans Day approaches, we encourage you to take a day to visit them and learn more about the men and women they honor. Service members did their duty to stand watch over their nation, and civilians did their duty by honoring them with these memorials. The least we can is set aside some time to remember our veterans, past and present, and say “Thank you for your service.”

Stockton’s Veterans Memorial, at 210 E. North Ave., is among the newest in northwest Illinois. It was dedicated in 2015 on the site of a former Johnson Oil Shell gas station. The land was donated by the station’s owner, Art Johnson. The memorial was the culimination of several years planning and work by 13 Stockton residents who formed a group to make the memorial possible. There are also 2 other memorials in Stockton, both erected in the early 1900s and both honoring Civil War soldiers. One is in Stockton Memorial Park and the other is in the Ladies Union Cemetery.

Shannon’s Veterans Memorial also was established in 2015; it is at the northwest corner of state Route 72 and Shannon Route. The memorial was made possible through the efforts of American Legion Post No. 379, who raised money for the project. During a 2014 interview, Post Commander Ernie Johnson said, “It’s wonderful to see this get off the ground after all the years of wanting to see it built. The Lanark Veterans Memorial is in the center of the town cemetery. The center flagpole was donated in memory of Jack and Mary Lou Eckburg on Memorial Day 2005 and the memorial grew from there. Flags, benches, sculpted walkways, and memorials containing bricks with the names of local veterans were added later. An armed service monument was also added. They were Christian solders, marching off to wars: One played a role in a revolution and the other served his country as a new century unfolded, but both did their part to see a young nation grow into a world power 20

ou won’t find Daniel Christian in any local high school history book. But that doesn’t mean he doesn't have something to teach us. His story is America’s story: the tale of a generation tempered by war whose fight for freedom helped forge a nation. Christian was one of the more than 230,000 British subjects who decided they were fed up with the tyranny of King George III and fought for American independence in the Revolutionary War. His story is also one with a chapter — albeit a short one — in Carroll County as one of its founding fathers. Christian may not have played a pivotal role in the war, but his commitment to American independence would change his life: One, he found the freedom he otherwise would not have had under British rule; and two, his place on the winning side of history helped him find land in a still growing nation, where he would live his final days. Born on Nov. 17, 1762, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, Daniel Christian was just 7 years old when the Boston Massacre drastically increased tensions between Colonists and the British. When the county militia formed and roamed the county protecting it from enemy forces, Christian was inspired to become a drummer boy and joined a company commanded by Capt. George Will in September 1776 at the age of 14. This 2-month stint became one of three different ones in Christian's service, but the other two would be in a different capacity. In December 1778, Christian enlisted as a private in a county company commanded by a Capt. Kit. By this time, Christian was one of 4,058 soldiers serving in Pennsylvania. In this stint, which also lasted 2 months, his unit engaged in guarding Continental stores and prisoners.

Pearl City’s veterans memorial is at the edge of Highland Cemetery, north of town along state Route 73. The Veterans Memorial Garden features the American flag, a POW flag, flags from the various branches of the service, and benches. Among the markers at the park is one honoring Alvin Erie Lott, who was killed in action during World War II. Lott, the son of Fredrick and Julia Anna Lott of Pearl City, joined the Navy on March 13, 1942. According to online records, he served as a Seaman 2nd Class aboard the West Chetac, a steam merchant ship attacked by a German U-boat about 100 miles north of Georgetown, British Guiana, on Sept. 24, 1942. A single torpedo sank the ship within 2 minutes. Its 50 crewmen tried to escape in lifeboats, but rough seas and the suction of the sinking ship capsized the boats, drowning many of them. The 19 survivors were questioned by the Germans and were later picked up on Oct. 1 by the USS Roe, a Navy destroyer. Lott was reported missing and ultimately declared dead on Sept. 25, 1943.

Christian’s third and final stint lasted longer than his previous ones combined. From June 1780 to January 1781, he served in the county’s 8th company, 6th battalion in Cumru Township, south of Reading under Capt. John Spohn and Lt. Col. Joseph Heister. Once the war was over, Christian married and he and his new bride, Elizabeth, moved to Maryland and raised four children. He received his war service pension in 1833. One son, Daniel Christian Jr., himself a junior officer in the War of 1812, decided to move out west like many of his fellow soldiers did, where they could find land and put down roots in the open expanses of a still growing nation. He reached Carroll County (then part of Jo Daviess County) in 1836 with his nine children in tow. The family plot is highlighted by Daniel Jr. and his immediate family, but his parents are within the same plot with stones marked “grandpa” and “grandpa.” Both the Sons and the Daughters of the American Revolution groups have commemorated the elder Christian’s burial site with both a second grave marker and a stone with a plaque attached to it. While his time in Carroll County was short, Christian’s story is timeless, and his resting places serves as a testament to his place in history: a man who was part of a generation that fought for independence, and who came west to find a home in a nation that would someday stretch from sea to shining sea.

What do you like about playing volleyball? I like the competitiveness. It’s a momentum-based sport, and if you’ve got the momentum on your side, you’re doing good. Playing at home is definitely fun.

Being an outside hitter is an important offensive position on the volleyball court; what do you like about being in that role? It boosts my confidence a lot. I think Coach [Kelsey Thurman] has a lot of trust in me, and putting me in that position is just big for me. I’ve always played outside hitter all of my career pretty much, and I’ve gotten used to it. It’s really fun. With momentum, you get a big kill and you play better, and so I really like that. What does it take to be a successful hitter from those corners? Honestly, just being smart. You’ve just got to be smart with your shots, and having a good vertical [leap] really helps; you don’t have to be the tallest player on the team, you just have to jump high and hit hard. What was the volleyball program like back in Newark? It was really good. They won state two state championships and it’s a very driven, motivated program. There was no messing around, nothing like that, and it’s just a good volleyball program all-around, good teammates, good people, and a great coaching staff. What have you come to like about being at Eastland? It’s a little of the same [as Newark] — the same motivation, and there’s a lot of drive here. There are lots of rivalries, which is nice because we can play really hard when we’re in a big rivalry game. The coaching staff is very great and very supportive, and always there if you need them. What’s been something about this year’s team that really stands out for you? We really play well together. When we all play together, we all have our best games going and play very well. We really like each other, we have good friendships on and off of the court, and that helps a lot. We play good when we play our best. Have your thought about college plans yet? A little bit, here and there. It’s moving pretty fast, but a little bit. I’m getting there, but it’s a little early. What do you like about living at Lake Carroll? The lake is very nice. The people are great. It’s a great community, and they’ve very supportive of the school. All of the people are very supportive, and that helps a lot.

hey weren’t angling for a compliment, but they were fishing for bragging rights. Fishers answered the casting call again this year for the Lake Carroll Classic Invitational, an annual competition to see who can reel in the biggest haul of bass. This year’s slate of fishing tournaments concluded Oct. 2 and 3 with the Invitational, where fishers who competed in at least three of the monthly events leading up to it sought to pile up the biggest mass of bass. After the COVID-19 pandemic delayed last year’s event schedule, it was bass business as usual this year. The first event on March 15 saw 16 boats scatter about on the lake to have fun, capture their five best bass in live-wells and see who would be the boat to beat in later events.

The May 10 event saw plenty of big fish among the top three boats. The top boat of Josiah and Greg Lester racked up 21.27 pounds of bass, including the biggest largemouth at 5.39 pounds; both were the highest totals of the year. The runner-up boat of Jeremy Jensen and Jon Pollack tallied 20.88 pounds, and the largest smallmouth catch of the year at 4.49 pounds. The top two boats and that of third-place finishers Jay O’Connell and Mike Jump combined for 59.31 pounds of bass. Robert Knackstedt had a strong start to open this year, being a part of boats that took and tied top honors in the first two events. The Knackstedt Family boat of Robert, Bob

and Joe tallied 15.19 pounds in the first event, which put them in a tie with the boat of Gary Gariff and Jeremy Allen. Robert and Tom Knackstedt teamed to take first place to themselves in the April 24 event with 18.35 pounds. Casey and Tanner Morgan had a strong year, placing in the top five in all events but one. They were tops on June 5 with 14.86 pounds, and were runners-up in the Classic with 28.63 pounds. The Morgans had a pair of third-place finishes in July and August, and two more fifth-place finishes in May (with Bill Baker as a third fisherman) and August. They also caught the largest smallmouth bass in July (3.50 pounds) and August (3.83).

Lester also had a pair of big catches during the summer events, teaming with Brent Rose to reel in the largest largemouth in June (4.70) and July (4.09). Aaron Hankins and Darin Small were the winners of July’s event, which took place at night; they collected 14.50 pounds of bass. O’Connell and Jump won the August event with 18.12 pounds and the best largemouth catch at 4.13 pounds. Dan Hayes and Baker had the largest haul in August at 18.12. Hayes ended the year strong, and was part of a family boat with Josh and Abby Hayes that won the Classic in October with 29.44 pounds. Runners-up Casey and Tanner Morgan pulled in 28.63 pounds. Third-place finishers Jimmy and Anthony Farace piled up 25.03 pounds, including the largest largemouth of 5.18 pounds. Jensen and Pollack took fourth (24.90) and Robert Knackstedt was fifth in a solo boat (23.30). The boat of Todd Gorrenn, Tom Gable and Bobby Lau caught the Classic’s largest smallmouth at 3.17 pounds. Comparing statistics from last year’s events to this year’s, the average weight of the largest largemouth bass caught in each event this year and each event last year, when rounded to the nearest hundredth, was 4.67 pounds. In the Classic, the combined weights of the top five bass for each of the top five boats this year and last year, rounded to the nearest whole number, was 131 pounds. The average catches of each month’s top three finishers this year averaged about 1 pound less than last year’s group of top three monthly finishers. The average smallmouth weight in each of this year’s events was 3.76 pounds, about a half-pound better than last year’s average figure. From each entrance fee, $5 per boat per tournament was donated to the Lake Carroll Fishing Club for fish restocking or for tournament supplies; there were 151 total boats in this year’s tournaments, resulting in $755 raised. Miller Sports Center sponsored the big bass prizes for this year’s tournaments. (Note: Statistics provided by the Lake Carroll Fishing Club.)
