lants such as Illinois flowering spurge, whorled milkweed, and blue lobelia once covered 60 percent of the Prairie State. Then came pastures, and invasive species, and now, more than a century later, less than 0.1 percent of that original prairie remains. A remnant of natural prairie was discovered nearly 2 years ago at Lake Carroll, and one that was planted in the ‘80s was rediscovered soon after. Both cover 5 to 10 acres. Since then, a dedicated group of about three dozen Lake Carroll residents are working hard to preserve those pretty pieces of nature’s past: The Lake Carroll Prairie Club. It was May 2018, and Becky Janopolous was riding her ATV when she spotted some unusual plants on Lake Carroll’s northeast side. She mentioned her find to Jim and Pam Richards. Pam knows prairies – she’s a University of Illinois Extension Service master naturalist. She and Jim met Becky 5 or 6 years ago, when they were working with Lake Carroll facilities manager Don Aleksy and AmeriCorps personnel to remove invasive plants. When he investigated Becky’s find, Jim found a plant he’d never seen before. He showed a photograph to Jim Rachuy, president of the Northwest Illinois chapter of Prairie Enthusiasts, which works with landowners, farmers and others to preserve prairie remnants. “It was green milkweed (see photo at left), almost exclusively found in remnants,” Jim Richards said.

That fall, Jim and Rickie Rachuy planted the seed from one green milkweed pod in their rare species garden and grew 24 seedlings, Pam wrote in an article in December’s “The Prairie Enthusiast.” Duane Ambroz, Illinois Department of Natural Resources heritage biologist, visited this pristine prairie remnant twice; he found two types of Spiranthes orchids or lady’s tresses, and since his visits, the Lake Carroll prairie people identified 30 grasses and forbs there, she wrote. (A forb is a herbaceous flowering plant that is not grass, sedge, or rush.) The other 7-acre plot was planted about 30 years ago along Lake Carroll Boulevard – then forgotten – by the Lake Carroll Association, the IDNR and Stephenson County Pheasants Forever.

Lake Carroll Prairie Club members have documented dozens of flora and insects, including butterflies, like this monarch. As part of the club’s mission to tend to Lake Carroll’s ecosystem, members foster the growth of plants that help maintain nature’s delicate balance – the group even has roots in a plant that monarchs need to survive: milkweed. The once plentiful prairie plant was discovered a few years back, which played a role in the eventual formation of the club. Monarchs are an important pollinator for many types of wildflowers. The butterflies lay their eggs on the underside of poisonous milkweed leaves. On its journey to becoming a butterfly, the caterpillar that hatches eats milkweed leaves and the toxins remain in the monarch’s system, which can cause animals that eat the butterfly to become ill and avoid munching on monarchs again.

That’s what they spent the better part of this winter doing – removing and burning woody invasives and eradicating interlopers when they find them. Now they are preparing for a controlled burn this spring, to help rejuvenate the area and to keep invasives at bay by burning any remaining seeds. In addition, the Prairie Club is planting an acre parcel called the Edgewater Planting, where they’ll plant annuals and a variety of prairie plants in a structured arrangement. Members also are experimenting with prairie planting in a campground area where fallen trees were removed, Pam wrote. And as always, members will be collecting seeds from the prairie to dry out and plant, and Pam will continue to post the emerging forbs or insect discoveries along with an educational text on the Lake’s Facebook page. Some of the topics she has written about include the definition and benefits of prairies, woodland management, eradication of invasive species, prairie plant varieties, wildlife, prairie burns and rain gardens. In fact, the club actually planted a rain garden to prove how, in a 1-inch rainfall, just two downspouts spilling out 600 gallons of water can dissipate within a couple of hours. As of December, the club, which meets monthly, has grown to 35 members. Lake Carroll residents are invited to join by calling Jim at 815-931-2972.

inter was nearly over. Yeah! Spring was a month away. Yeah! That means it was time for another Fishing Club general meeting and pot luck. The weather was typical for this time of year – it was just OK. But attendance, considering the OK weather, was on the lighter side. Maybe the snowbirds were still in transit from warmer climates, or maybe it was concerns over the coronavirus. The 40 members and guests who did attend were able to enjoy a meal, share some fellowship and receive updates on future Fishing Club activities.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, which always signals the start of the meeting, new members and guests were introduced. Attending this month’s meeting were new property owners Larry and Jody Lucchesi, who recently moved to Lake Carroll and joined the Fishing Club that night. Also attending was the grandson of Char Messmore, Maddox. Welcome everyone! Following the introductions, Mitch Feucht presented the Treasurer’s Report. Income for February was $586, received from dues, handicap pier donations and the raffle. Expenses totaled $384.13. Payments were made for postage and printing, pot luck food, raffle gift cards and the telephone.

The February ending balance was favorable by $201.87. Mitch then mentioned that membership renewals are at 128, which is typical for this time of year. With the treasurer’s report complete, Jim Richards provided an update on club activities. • A hatchery work day was held March 13. The main purpose was to clean the hatchery, replace the clear plastic tubing, check equipment and inspect hoop nets, to make sure everything was working properly and ready for the spring walleye harvest. • The board and several guests made a trip to Cordova to view its hatchery operation. The focus of the trip was to discuss the Lake Carroll operation, solicit ideas on how to increase the success rate for releasing mature walleyes, compare their process flow to Lake Carroll’s and brainstorm other possible options. At the conclusion of the trip, the group reconvened to discuss the information learned and how best to implement those ideas. Everyone thought that the tour and discussions were beneficial and that the information received could help improve the Lake Carroll operation. • Because the “Sink the Tree” contest could not be held this winter, the club has decided to create a new contest. “Guess the length of the biggest walleye” caught in the
hoop nets this spring. Entry costs $3, with one guess allowed per person. The length must be recorded to 1/16 of inch and all entries must be received before the hoop nets are placed into the lake. The winner will receive 50% of the pot. •Re: The handicapped pier: A raffle is being considered to help raise money for construction of the handicap accessible fishing pier. Additional information will be provided in the near future. A question was asked by Barb Anderson concerning the donation request sent to Spahn & Rose. Spahn & Rose advised the club that a $300 donation would be applied to the total cost of all material needed for construction. This $300 donation will help offset some of the material price increases realized from their suppliers for the 2020 season. • The meeting came to a close with the gift card raffle. This month’s lucky winners were Char Messmore, $30 Dollar General gift card, and Norma Andrus, $25 Casey’s gift card. Congratulations to the lucky winners. he coronavirus threw a monkey wrench into a lot of springtime plans, and Timber Lake Playhouse was not immune. After releasing its newly expanded concert series lineup, TLP was forced to announce postponements: At the time of writing this article, the Zachary Stevenson and the Oh, Boys! concert, a tribute to Buddy Holly, will be rescheduled, and local auditions that were to have taken place March 29 are being moved to April 26. “We at TLP have been looking forward to opening the theatre earlier this season and we understand the disappointment with this decision,” Executive Director Dan Danielowski said in a news release. “We also understand how we all must do our part in mitigating the spread of this disease and look forward to opening the theatre later this spring.”

About Timber Lake Playhouse ...

magic Ensembles, soloists, duos and dancers – in the past 59 years, they’ve all had their moments in the spotlight at Timber Lake Playhouse Timber Lake Playhouse was established in 1961 as a professional, non-profit summer theatre company. Today, its mission is to provide the best expression of theater arts to the regional community by presenting creative works that entertain and inspire. The current theatre building (erected after a fire destroyed the original wooden-frame structure in 1974) houses a 45-foot wide semi-thrust revolving stage and 371 fixed seats. The property is also home to 14 other buildings used for costumes, scenic and paint shops, food service and housing for the company. The unique layout of facilities allows the Playhouse to present work on a much larger scale than many summer theatre companies. In 2017, TLP purchased an additional 5 acres of wooded land surrounding the property including the barn structure to the south of the theatre. and musicals and nearly 4,000 performances. TLP presents a challenging combination of material each year: a mix of large-scale musicals, new plays, and contemporary classics. The theatre hosts annual educational workshops for children and teens in conjunction with the Magic Owl Children’s Theatre’s productions of plays and musicals for young people and their families. The Resident Company consists of 35-40 performers, technicians and musicians selected by interviews and auditions in cities across the country. Numerous guest performers, directors and choreographers supplement the resident company each season. Timber Lake is proud of its national reputation for excellence as a professional summer stock theatre. The theatre has served as launching pad for theatre artists of all kinds who have gone on to excellence in film, television, on Broadway and stages all over the world. One notable alumna includes actress Jennifer Garner, who was part of the summer stock in 1992.
For now, the TLP office is closed and staff are working from home, reachable via phone and email. Those who bought tickets for the March 20 concert can rest assured that those tickets and seat assignments automatically will transfer to the new date once it is determined. Those who cannot make the rescheduled date can either use those ticket prices for any other TLP production, or get a refund. “We will monitor the situation and our decisions will be made day to day,” Danielowski said. For now, April events are up in the air, and theatergoers are advised to keep an eye on TLP’s website and Facebook page for updates. That said, with ever an optimistic outlook, here is the upcoming schedule of events through the fall at Timber Lake Playhouse, “your theater in the woods:”

here’s more to the hammering, sawing and drilling going on at Timber Lake Playhouse than just the usual set-building. The regional summer stock theater at 8215 Black Oak Road south of Mount Carroll – and a mere 20 minutes south of Lake Carroll – is looking to take that word “summer” out of its description, and become a year-round destination for discerning theatergoers. So before the season kicks into high gear, crews are renovating the bathrooms and enclosing rehearsal spaces, TLP Executive Director Dan Danielowski said. “We’re expanding our rehearsal spaces and work spaces and winterizing, so we can easily work year round.” It’s just the beginning of a new phase in the life of the oldest continuously operating professional and resident summer stock theater company in the state. The improvements are part of a 5-year, $1.4 million capital campaign that also includes new housing, rehearsal areas, and dining facilities.

Established in 1961, TLP brings thousands of tourists to its shows and provides many young people theater training that will take them to larger stages throughout the country. Timber Lake is a well-respected professional equity theater, and Danielowski estimates this year he will hire around 140 people who will act, build sets, work on technical components, cook in the kitchen and run the box office. An expansion will bring the ability to launch even more careers, and bring more top-level entertainment to the region a full 12 months a year. The work started in June with a $95,755 tourism grant from Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. “This grant came at a perfect time,” said Timber Lake Board President Robin Saar, who’s also president and chairwoman of the board of First State Bank of Shannon, Polo and Lake Carroll. “We wanted to announce a capital campaign that would address the needs of the theatre for the next several, years and were looking for the best way to unveil it. Receiving this grant is a great boost to start the campaign.”
First comes insulating and enclosing the open-air lobby and installing new HVAC. For that work the theater is using the grant money and the 50% funding match that it requires, totaling around $191,500. Donors also are stepping up to fund other improvements for the theater campus, which last year entertained about 29,000 people. That number could rise to 34,000 or so by stretching the theater season from May into December, Danielowski said. In fact, he and Artistic Director Paul Stancato are planning programming for the fall and winter that could include additional concerts and performances as well as a haunted October and a Christmas celebration. One theater-lover is being particularly generous: “We have a donor who will match, dollar for dollar, all donations up to $100,000,” he said. The Willow Springs Charitable Foundation also has committed to matching all individual donations to the campaign. It’s an ambitious undertaking for the nearly 60-year-old company, and one that definitely needs a few theater angels to succeed, but after all, aren’t you supposed to dream big in showbiz?

For Alan and Adrianne St. George it was home, a romantic refuge from the modern world that became their little slice of Haven on Earth. Today that lavish lifestyle lives on inside sculpted castle walls and beneath ceilings adorned with art, and although Adrianne died in 2006, Alan is working to show that love really is eternal as he continues to work on the castle, and share it with the public. “I feel it is my job to finish what we started here,” he said.

“Our mission statement was not only to recreate the house, but the lifestyle of the American aristocracy,” Alan said. Today, they Greenleafs’ home, Hillside, serves as a visitor center for Havencrest Castle, which is behind locked gates at the end of a driveway, accessed via a one-lane road from the street below. Simon Greenleaf owned the Savanna Times, and later the Savanna Journal with his son, Francis; the newspapers eventually merged into today’s Times-Journal. The Greenleafs died in 1944, and Hillcrest passed through several hands before the St. Georges moved to Savanna in 1976 from Oak Park. Alan had launched a costume and mascot-making company, now known as Facemakers, after finding success as a student at the Chicago University of the Arts.

The Medieval Hall at Havencrest is an 80-foot hallway that provides access to the ballroom, East Wing and the Gentleman’s Tower.
“In 1972, he was hired to promote the horror movie ‘Frogs,’ and wore a frog costume while handing out jumping frogs,” said Nancy Willis, Facemakers’ general manager. “He didn’t like the costume, so his friends helped him make his own.” That costume became St. George’s hopping stone into costuming. He sold the frog’s head to a costume shop owner in Chicago, and eventually started creating and selling costumes. Today, a movie poster from the film hangs in the company’s office, now in an old grade school on Chicago Avenue, where it moved after being housed at Havencrest for its first 23 years. Facemakers’ success enabled the St. Georges to expand Hillcrest’s original 22 rooms to 63, with sumptuous decorations reflecting Alan and Adrianne’s interests and appreciation of other cultures. Before visitors even enter the home, they’ll see some of the features the couple added: A statue of the Roman god Neptune riding a lion sits atop the front steps, while turrets and towers peer out from above the lush foliage that surround the home.

The St. Georges hosted dinner parties and holiday events through the years, hiring a staff to help them. Adrianne owned a large collection of etiquette books, including all of Emily Post’s works. “She loved doing events in the Victorian and Edwardian style. She’d have a button she’d push to have the servants bring the next course,” Alan said. The mansion’s staff is down to about half a dozen people today, some third-generation employees of the St. Georges. The couple also gave back to Carroll County, with Adrianne serving as the founding director of the its Humane Society.

Many rooms in the original part of the castle are decorated in traditional Victorian designs. Other rooms feature Chinese, Persian, Egyptian, and Indian themes, as well as a medieval hall, and a conservatory with Chicagostyle architecture. Many of these rooms are open on the tours, the rest are Alan’s private residence. The front hall has a 135-pound sculpture of a cherub with a light fixture, replicating a design from the Titanic, reflecting Alan’s interest in the doomed ocean liner. Also on display is a trophy presented to Harry Houdini in 1908. Alan’s dressing room contains a variety of canes and a gold-covered tooth from an Albertosaurus dinosaur. Cherubs can be found in many rooms, since they were a favorite of Adrianne’s. Alan, who met Adrianne when he was 13, said she collected them all her life. Symbols of their love are on prominent display: A large photo of Alan and Adrianne costumed as royalty hangs over one of the staircases, and in the Indian-themed room, paintings portray Alan as a maharajah, or Indian high king, and Adrianne as his queen. Their personal seal, marked with their motto “Semper Nos” – “Always Us” in Latin – is incorporated into a stained glass window in the medieval hall and elsewhere around the mansion.
Love lives on When Adrianne died, Alan spent 5 years mourning her loss and sculpting, creating pieces for celebrities such as Siegfried and Roy and Neil Patrick Harris. Later, Alan turned his attention back to Havencrest, beginning work on the grand ballroom, a project still underway today. Alan said his wife envisioned the room being open to the public for weddings. “It would’ve been a temple of love,” with weddings in the garden just beyond, Alan said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.” For a time, he opened 23 rooms for public tours, and since decided to allow self-guided visits in October. “We had 3,000 people tour here in October 2018. One day, we had 439 people. They came from the Quad Cities, Chicago, Iowa City, Wisconsin, Utah, Nebraska, and Canada,” he recalled. The castle will open again next month. As for what the future holds, Alan is working to make sure love lives on. “I have created a living trust which names current employees and friends to take over when I am no longer capable, or upon my death, “ he said. “A public life for Havencrest is part of the plan, and based on the success we’ve seen so far, I have great confidence that will only increase in the years ahead.”

olfers in Lake Carroll have more to boast about than just their swing: The 18-hole, par 72 semi-private Lake Carroll Golf Course, built in 1973, is rated among the top 10 in all of Illinois by Golf Advisor, a coursereviewing website. In fact, it ranks at No. 8, garnering 4.8 out of 5 stars. Not only is it a challenging course, it’s also a beautiful one, surrounded by forests and with a unique terrain that has kept golfers coming back year after year for nearly 50 years. “It’s the rolling hills,” says golf pro Jason Hill, who’s also the golf coach at Eastland High School in Lanark.
The fourth hole, for example, features a low clearing that slopes up past sand traps to the green. Forests surround the course, while a clubhouse awaits those who want a break or who’ve finished their rounds for the day. The front nine holes opened in 1973, the back nine in 1991, and, about 10 years ago golf architect Bob Lohmann and his companies, Lohmann Golf Designs Inc. and Golf Creations, out of Marengo, began to work in phases, redesigning, rebuilding and creating several features. Lohmann’s work has included 18 green-surrounds and bunker renovations, a new 8th hole; a driving range expansion; two new greens, and improvements to the fairway and tee layout. Jason Hill Most recently, the Lohmann crew renovated the 11th hole; it opened for play on the Fourth of July. This spring, attention will turn to the nearly 30-year-old back nine, which is getting a new irrigation system installed by Midwest Irrigation, out of East Dubuque. Depending on the weather – and one major bug beyond anyone’s control – the work will take about 6 weeks, Hill said That’’s probably good timing: The course at 2911 Ironwood Blvd. usually opens April 1 and runs until the weather turns in November.

Last year’s wet spring pushed that back, and this year the coronavirus, which is playing havoc with everyone’s opening day plans, has intervened. At the time of this writing, Hill and other golf course managers were waiting for coronavirus guidance from the U.S. Golf Association, which creates the rules that govern the game, among other things. The pro shop is likely to remain closed, and lessons will be on hold, until the need for social-distancing goes away, but whether and when he can open the course to golfing and cart use wasn’t clear, Hill said March 25. Everyone is advised to keep an eye on the Lake Carroll Golf Course Facebook page for updates. Hill also can be reached at golfpro@golakecarroll.com. When it does open, it’s available dawn to dusk, and plans still call for a variety of themed days, with Mother’s Day, Independence Day, Halloween and Thanksgiving scrambles and tournaments, and outings for area groups and agencies . Hill, who grew up in Carroll County and played golf in school, has been Lake Carroll’s golf pro for 20 years. Those links to the past have provided him with priceless memories. “The most memorable moment for me was watching my father, John Hill, win the club championship,” he said. The laid-back attitude of the staff, their attention to serving their golfers’ needs and their fastidious upkeep of the course all combine to make it the jewel of the Lake Carroll community. “We want people to feel welcomed,” Hill said. “They can keep pace or play as fast as possible.”

JJ & Freddie’s@Sievert’s, opened a year ago at 121 W. Market St., in the former home of Sievert’s Steaks-nStuff. Despite the new name and a new look, new owner Jay Upmann of Stockton embraces paying homage to the landmark eatery’s storied past, including Sievert’s pizza, a longtime customer favorite. The Upmann family, who own JJ & Freddie’s in Stockton and so really knows how to run a restaurant, nonetheless did not rush in to reopening the Mount Carroll eatery. “I’ve always enjoyed their pizza, and I talked with [former general manager] Kris Plattenberger. One thing led to another,� Upmann said. They bought Sievert’s in September 2018, then took their time tweaking it, inside and out, opening to much fanfare on April 1, 2019.

The green awning over the’ entrance was replaced with a JJ & Freddie’s@Sievert’s sign, which features a bear. Inside, the dark wood paneling was replaced with lighter colors on the walls, one of which sports a large metal “JJ & F” sign. “We added maybe only about another 10 seats,” Upmann said. Nods to the past remain, though – photos of Mount Carroll’s historic downtown and other items from the restaurant’s history are part of the decor. The menu of American family fare features appetizers, more than a dozen sandwiches and burgers, dinner, a selection of pastas, kids meals, desserts, and – of course – pizza. Like the look of the restaurant, Sievert’s signature pizza is a synthesis of the old and the new. “We have our Market Street pizza, with Sievert’s crust [thick or thin] and our recipe otherwise,” he said. Patrons also will find a full-service bar and video gaming machines. JJ & Freddie’s also does catering for all occasions. Upmann’s son, Cameron, is one of the restaurant managers, and staff rotate between the Mount Carroll and Stockton sites. “We like to be engaged with customers,” Upmann said. One local patron, Josh Cobert, definitely is a fan. “My new favorite family restaurant in Mount Carroll,” Cobert wrote in an online review. “Good service, great food, lots of menu options for the whole family, and a great environment. “I will be going back soon!” 18-5 Lake Carroll Blvd, Lake Carroll
