February at the Lee County Council on Aging offers celebration, services, and senior favorites

The Lee County Council on Aging invites area seniors and caregivers to take part in a full slate of activities and essential services throughout February, offering opportunities to socialize, stay active, and receive valuable support during the winter months.

The month begins on Monday, Feb. 2, with a festive Groundhog Day celebration at 1 p.m. Depending on Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast,

guests will be treated to iced tea if spring is on the way or hot chocolate if winter continues. The celebration will include time for visiting and socializing with the new Pastor of United Methodist Church. Popcorn will be served, followed by a group viewing of the classic film “Groundhog Day.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 3, AARP Tax Assistance returns to the Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Trained volunteers will be available to help seniors prepare and file their taxes. Appointments are required, and individuals must call 815-288-9236 to schedule a time.

Also on Feb. 3, the Caregivers Support Group will resume, providing a welcoming space for caregivers to share experiences, gain resources, and connect with others facing similar challenges. Beginning in April, the Lee County Council on Aging will host a four-part educa -

Caregiver Tip

Communication can be hard for people with Alzheimer’s and related dementias because they have trouble remembering things. They also can be agitated and anxious, even angry. In some forms of dementia, language abilities are affected such that people have trouble finding the right words or have difficulty speaking. You as a caregiver may feel frustrated or impatient, but it is important to understand that the disease is causing the change in communication skills.

The senior centers do not require duration of residency or citizenship as a condition of participation in any services or programs funded by the Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. Residency or citizenship may be a requirement for other programs that the senior centers may provide assistance with in application or accessing of same. Services are made available, in part, with funds provided under Title III-B of the Older American Act, and the Illinois General Revenue Funds, through the Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. We are a United Way-funded agency.
