and just enjoy the viewing of the talent. Then, on Saturday morning we open the doors for Breakfast and Santa’s Workshop. Enjoy a filling Continental Breakfast downstairs in the Post House Community Center (50 cents per item). After that, you can head upstairs for crafts, pictures with Santa (be sure to
bring your camera!) and shopping. Santa’s Workshop is designed for the children. Let them shop for their loved ones and pick out what they want to buy for Mom, Dad, brothers, sisters, etc. There will be “elves” here to help. Gingerbread house viewing will also be available during the workshop, with prizes being given out at 11:15. As I said, this is one of our favorite activities here at LCCOA. We hope to see you. December also brings about our annual Membership appeal here at LCCOA. You should have received your membership letter already, but I want to remind you to send it in, and to please
look on the back of the form and consider joining our Ladder Club. The Ladder Club is our ongoing giving program where you can set up a monthly donation to LCCOA through your checking or savings account. After you set it up, we will withdraw a set amount you choose from your account on either the 5th or the 20th of each month. This continues until you tell us to stop. Just a small donation each month helps us out tremendously, and all Ladder Club donations include your yearly membership to LCCOA. Why not sign up today and join your friends and neighbors who are already part of the club?
I’m sure you’ve heard it from me before, but remember that membership in LCCOA is open to everyone, of any age, who supports the programs and good work we do here. You don’t have to wait until you are a certain age – remember that we are a “Community” Center. Most of our programs are open to everyone and we invite you to try us out. This Golden Echo, like those every month, contains lots of great information about our programming, special trips and more. Check it out. Do you have younger children (K-4th grade) who you would like to experience the importance of giving to others? Bring them to our seventh annual Santa’s Workshop & Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the WCSC. Children and adults can enjoy some great pancakes and sausage, get their picture taken with Santa, and the children can shop for their family in Santa’s Workshop with the help of Santa’s elves. Check the front page for more details! If you would like to help Santa fill up his workshop,
please drop gently used toys, ornaments, beanie babies, or small toys at the WCSC! We can always use gifts for dads such as small tools, ties, flashlights, fishing equipment, golf balls, T-shirts, etc. We are also in need of gifts for boys this year. We want to thank all of the volunteers who make this special event a great success! Also, stop by the WCSC and check out our “silent auctions,” which will be taking place in December. We have a variety of items including Christmas blankets, knick-knacks, decorations, wreaths, and even some gently used toys you can bid on to help support the WCSC! Please check the Echo for a list of activities and special events scheduled for December, I am sure you can find something that will catch your interest. Our staff tries to offer new events when people sug-
gest them and others show an interest in them. Let us know if you would like to see us add a new activity. December is “Membership” month at WCSC. Current members should receive a letter shortly with a 2017 Membership Renewal form. Please complete the form and return your membership fee, $30 per couple and $20 for an individual, to the WCSC. If you are not currently a member you can join by going to wc-seniorcenter. org and completing the membership page. Membership fees help to support our daily activities, programs, and special events at the WCSC! Membership is a great way to support the Senior Center and entitles you to a discount on many of our special bus trips. You do not have to be a senior to join the WCSC! Everyone is welcome to participate in our daily
activities including our daily home cooked meal! If you are looking for something to do, just stop by and check out all of the fun activities available at the WCSC. Please call us if you would like us to send you a membership application! Businesses wishing to help support the WCSC can contact us for more information on our donor levels and sponsorship opportunities. We greatly appreciate everyone’s support! The WCSC Board, staff, and volunteers wish you and your family a very blessed holiday season! Nov. 29 is “Giving Tuesday,” a special day when the community is encouraged to make donations to their local nonprofit organizations to help support the great work they do in their community. If you would like to help out the WCSC, you can mail your donation directly to the WCSC, 1207 W 9th Street, Sterling, IL 61081 or if you
would rather use a credit card you can go to our website at wcseniorcenter.org and make a donation through Network For Good (NFG), a nonprofit which helps nonprofits collect and process donations for “Giving Tuesday.” You can make donations throughout the year, and start or renew your WCSC membership! NFG gives you an opportunity to make your gift whole by including the cost of the processing fee in your donation. If you would like you can set up a monthly donation to the WCSC!. It is a great way to help the WCSC throughout the year!

Cathy shares memories of her mother the water had to be hauled in, no tub nor toilet. If you wanted to make money at a rummage sale, you couldn’t let her be in charge as she’d slash all the prices to get rid of everything. (“Do you want that? We’ll make it a quarter.”) One of the caretakers at the nursing home said she was so happy to see mom when she started working there, and so glad to be helping her, as mom had helped her when she needed it years before. She’s only one of thousands. Mom just couldn’t let anyone feel left out, or be in need of the basics in life; she treated everyone with respect, and they loved her for it. I had an experience the other day that I am used to – someone told me how wonderful my mother was (Joan Sheridan, who died Oct. 2), and her death has her on everyone’s mind, especially when they see one of the eight of her ten children who are still alive. It made me realize that I felt special when people would speak to me of mom; many of them thought I was special just because I was her daughter. That’s a pretty good feeling, and it will not be brought up much anymore. That I will miss. I will remember, however, the fun mom who would scare us while we were watching something suspenseful on TV and dressed up as Jim McMahon for Halloween ’85, (and many other characters since then). I will remember the nurturing mom who was always hugging and tickling the little kids, and was so far away from the camera holding a baby that we had to see who’s name she wrote on the back of the picture to see which one of us she was holding.
This is it! Santa’s Workshop in the Ballroom is Saturday, Dec. 3, and includes buying gifts, wrapping them, and crafting! Breakfast with Santa and Gingerbread House Village will be downstairs in the Post House Community Center. You’re going to love it! The mom who I found canning peaches one warm summer night when we were all sleeping, who cut up apples and passed them around as we watched TV, who cursed the day I closed the car door on, and broke, the new glass she just picked up to replace a window at the house. She was a very hard worker, she
painted and hung wall-paper even when pregnant – not just at our house, but at the relatives as well – it was an “everybody helps everybody” situation. When we were little, she washed our hair outside in the summer, the rinse water from one head used to wash the next head and so on – probably only about six of us at that time, but

Is Medicare Part D Mandatory? Dear Marci, Do I have to sign up for Part D if I already have prescription drug coverage? – Camila (Kona, Hawaii) Dear Camila, Part D enrollment is optional, but if you do not sign up for Part D you might have a late enrollment penalty if you enroll at a later time. The Part D late enrollment penalty is one percent of the national average Part D premium for each month that you delayed Part D enrollment and were not covered by creditable drug coverage. You can delay Part D without penalty if you are currently covered by creditable drug coverage.
Creditable drug coverage is coverage that has an overall value that is as good as or better than standard coverage under Part D. You may receive creditable coverage from your current employer insurance, retiree insurance, military benefits, or Federal health benefits. If your drug coverage is creditable, you should receive notice from the plan around September each year. If you do not receive this notice, you should contact your benefits manager to get this information in writing. Keep these notices because you will need proof of your creditable coverage if you decide later that you want to enroll in Medicare Part D.
If you drop or lose your creditable prescription drug coverage through no fault of your own, you will have a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to sign up for Part D for up to 63 days after your coverage ends. If you drop or lose your current or former employer-based prescription drug coverage, regardless of whether it is creditable, you will also have an SEP to sign up for Part D for up to 63 days after coverage ends. In order to avoid a late enrollment penalty, this employer-based coverage must have been creditable. There might be consequences if you sign up for Part D in addition to your current drug cover-
age. You should ask your employer or retirement benefits administrator if you can keep their coverage and have Part D at the same time. You could lose your employer, retiree, or other benefits if you sign up for a Part D plan. It is important to keep this in mind if your plan covers a spouse or dependents because if you lose coverage, they will too, and it is unlikely you will be able to get the coverage back. – Marci Marci’s Medicare Answers is a service of the Medicare Rights Center, the nation’s largest independent source of information and assistance for people with Medicare.

It ever so warms my precious little heart in the cold of winter just seeing your smiles, having your acceptance, listening to your stories, the laughter, the friendship, and yes, even the criticism. You make my work exciting and keep me on my toes. I
strive to make your dining here be that home away from home, where everybody knows your name, and a warm environment to socialize with others. Santa’s Workshop will be on Saturday, Dec. 10. Grab your grandchildren, kids, great grandkids for breakfast with Santa. It’s $3 for adults, and $1.50
for children younger than 12. WCSC will be serving ham, sweet potatoes, and green bean casserole for our Christmas meal on Dec. 22. Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, let us come together in love, blessings, peace, and joy! Merry Christmas, and God bless!!!!

Gingerbread Competition & Santa Workshop The Post House Community Center and Lee County Council on Aging is holding a Gingerbread house competition during our Santa’s Workshop event. Kids, youth, families, organizations and businesses were encouraged to have fun and build an edible house for the competition.
These houses will be on public display in the Post House Ballroom from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 to Thursday, Dec. 1; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2; and 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. Prizes and bragging rights for people’s choice, child, youth, family and group categories will be
awarded at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. A panel of judges will judge entries based on originality, overall appearance, choice and use of materials and difficulty of design. People’s choice is based on community votes. Stop in and make your monetary vote for your favorite house!

Have trouble hearing on the cell phone? Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC) has added a program to help those with cellular service that are having trouble hearing on the phone. The program still provides free amplified telephones and captioning telephones to Illinois residents that are hard of hearing. Applicants must be certified as hard of hearing by a doctor, nurse practitioner, or audiologist; live in Illinois; and have a service
that remits to the program. Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for ITAC. Walk-ins are welcomed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the WCSC. Potential applicants can call the WCSC at 815-622-9230 or LCCOA at 815-288-9236 in advanced to set up an appointment to see about qualifying for this
wonderful program. Cell phones must be Bluetooth capable. Applicants that wish to apply for this program should bring in the cell phone. Please bring a phone bill with all the pages for landline service or cellular service (prepaid cell users that don’t receive a phone bill must bring the cell phone) and proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with the applicant’s name and address on it).
As we enter the holiday season, we hope you all had a happy healthy Thanksgiving Day. We all have so much to be thankful for-some of us more than others. We need to remember those less fortunate. Some that have no families, homes, friends, etc. Keep those in your thoughts. Then Christmas is coming. All the shopping,

Outreach in Whiteside County Annual enrollment for Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans is wrapping up this month and ends of December 7th. The WCSC Outreach staff has been very busy assisting their clients and would like to thank everyone for their patience during this busy time. By the time this article is published their appointments will probably be booked up. If anyone was not able to come in or get an appointment they have the option of calling Medicare at 1-800-633-4227 for help comparing plans. The WCSC Outreach staff would also like to apologize for not having an article in last month. Unfortunately, it is unclear why the article did not get in November’s Golden Echo. The WCSC Outreach staff is looking forward to next year.
November and December is planning time for the New Year. They will continue to have walk-in day on Monday except on holidays that the senior center is closed. Appointments should be scheduled in advance for Medicare counseling and for residents in Morrison, Erie, Prophetstown, or Fulton at a meeting site in their area. They will also continue to offer the Medicare information class for Medicare beneficiaries. The WCSC Outreach staff will continue to try to provide the best service possible and please feel free to call with any questions 815-622-9230, ext. 194.
Medicare Part D facts Medicare Part D plans may have standard network pharmacies, preferred network pharmacies, and mail order pharmacies. The
pharmacy used to fill prescriptions can make a difference in the price. Beneficiaries can call their Medicare Part D plan to find out which pharmacy will save them the most money. Medicare Part D plans usually have their customer service phone number on the back of their prescription plan cards.
WCSC Medicare class The Whiteside County Senior Center’s Medicare class is at 1:30 p.m Dec. 16. This class is free and is designed for beneficiaries becoming new to Medicare to learn about their options. Beneficiaries that are already on Medicare are welcome to attend as well. Donations are appreciated to help with the cost of the materials that are handed out. Please call 815622-9230 in advanced to sign up.

The deadline is December 7. This year has been another busy year for us here at LCCOA as we have had hundreds of Part D comparisons come through our doors. We want to thank you
for your patience as we get through each and every one of you. If you have not yet had a comparison and would still like to do one, please contact one of us at 815288-9236 as soon as possible. If you wait till the last day, you may miss out (Medicare’s web site tends to go down a lot, especially at the very end, do to cyber overload).

APPLES, APPLES, APPLES Boy did we see a lot of apples. Had a great time at Tanners Orchard and then had a bite to eat at the Golden Corral. The group split up after that, some went shopping and worked off some of the delicious food that we had and others sat and rested while trying their luck at the local casino.
