When you join the Lee County Council on Aging (remember, we are ALL aging, even if some of us don’t want to be reminded), you are saying that you support our efforts in making life a little better for our Lee County seniors. You are also helping us to keep doing so. Every year your membership dollars need to stretch a bit further as our grant programs shrink. And a
single membership costs only $20, or $30 for two individuals who live in the same household. If you do not have a membership form, just come in and we will have you fill one out, or we can send you one. Thank you! Christmas may have passed, but there’s still New Year’s Day to look forward to, and a great 2015 after that. We are working hard to make sure that our programs get even better in the coming years, and that we offer a wide enough variety that everyone can find something that interests them. For example, in December we began a new program of chair exercise. This is a new, zero impact form of exercise that is both fun and beneficial. Also in
December, we expanded our reach in the county. In addition to our regular Outreach visits to Amboy, Ashton, Franklin Grove and Paw Paw, we now will be visiting Sublette on the third Wednesday of every month, in the Hall at Our Lady of Perpetual Health church. Ruth or Samantha will be there each month to answer questions and help you with issues dealing with government programs and other issues. Stop and say hello. 2015 also will see many of your old favorites, including the chili supper in March, Spring Prom in April, and our big summer luau in August. And we are working right now on a new and exciting event for July. Stay tuned for more information.
And, if you’re looking for a new way to help, we are kicking off our annual 50/50 drawing. Tickets are on sale NOW for only $1 per ticket or 6 tickets for $5. Your participation helps us, and you may walk away one of our big winners. The drawing will be held this year at the Spring Prom on April 11, so there is plenty of time for the pot to build. And plenty of time for you to buy tickets. Get some now, and then each month leading up to the drawing. Good luck. Do they want more programs, more services, more social activities, more chances to travel to those destinations we have been talking about for years, or just a place to go where everyone knows your name and you can enjoy a good homemade cooked lunch and a chance to play pinochle,
pool, dominoes, bridge, euchre, or other games we enjoy? In order to get the answers to these questions, we will be conducting a satisfaction survey of those who participate at the WCSC and the general public. We anticipate a survey in late February or early March, but your input is always greatly appreciated at any time. Please feel free to contact the staff with new ideas for programs and activities we can implement at WCSC. We are in the early stages of implementing the My Senior Center software system, which will allow us to collect contact information for those who use or may be interested in participating in our programs or activities. Please stop by and pick up your
complementary WCSC keytag and complete an updated information form so we can keep in touch with you during 2015. We hope to have an email newsletter out to those who have provided us with an email address. Keep checking your email! If severe weather should hit our area during the winter, please listen to your local radio stations, TV stations, and other local media sources for announcements regarding the closure of the WCSC and WCPT. We try to make a determination as early in the morning as possible so everyone can have time to check the cancellations. We will update the message on our automated answering system as soon as we make a final deci-
sion. We value the safety of our patrons, staff and volunteers! WCSC is a warming site between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Please check the Echo for a list of daily, weekly, and monthly activities and programs for January. We hope you will come out and become a member of WCSC and get active in our programs! Here at the Dixon Senior Center, we were in a festive mood all month, from our early December decorating party, through Santa’s Workshop, and then with entertainment from a great variety of seasonal entertainment. Special thanks to Home Bound Healthcare for its Christmas karaoke, Diane Schnake for her great keyboard work and Christ-
mas carols, the always great Dixon High School Madrigal singers, and our own Sassy Senior Steppers line dancers, as well as everyone who came and participated in these activities. While we wait for Jan. 1 to arrive, we need to take time to reflect back on 2014 to review our goals and identify which ones we accomplished and which ones will need to be addressed in 2015! Many of us set New Year’s resolutions with great intentions, but we soon get wrapped up in our daily activities and lose sight of them. This
year instead of setting a number of resolutions, I suggest you pick 1 or 2 goals to focus on, and when you have achieved them than set 1 or 2 more and work on them. By the end of 2015, you may have achieved a number of your New Year’s resolutions instead of being overwhelmed with 10 goals at the beginning of the year. Good luck with your New Year’s resolutions! I want to thank the board members, Doug the Director, the citizens, guests, staff, and the volunteers for making the Center a success. I am enjoying getting to know each and every one of you, your smiles, your acceptance, your stories, the laughter, and your friendship. I strive to make your dining here be that home away from home, where everybody knows your name, and a warm environment to socialize with others. Although I have had my share of spilled milk, all of you have made this transition a pleasant one. Your praises and
patience are humbling. There is so much more to learn, so feel free to offer suggestions. All your feedback helps us improve the kitchen. Special thanks to our local food distributors who generously donate produce to keep the cost of meals down. Thanks to Walmart for the free Thanksgiving, as well as Christmas meal, they provided the community. Santa’s Workshop was a success, thanks to all who donated time, hearts, and a helping hand. And now we have come to an end to the year 2014. Most of you will agree that the year
seemed more like days, yet this is one of the most important and beautiful seasons of the year. With Thanksgiving come and gone, we still linger with the joy of family gathering, sounds of laughter, singing of carols, the calming of candles, and the jingling of bells. Protect yourself from Medicare fraud Dear Marci, I recently found out that my doctor billed Medicare for several medical tests that I never actually received. What steps can I take going forward to protect myself from Medicare fraud? – Grace (Anchorage, Alaska) Dear Grace, Medicare fraud happens when doctors, providers, or individuals deceive Medicare into paying more than it should, or paying for services when it should not. This is against the law, and it can put the health and well being of Medicare beneficiaries at risk. There are steps that you can take to protect yourself from Medicare fraud and ensure that you still receive appropriate medical care. Here are some important tips: 1. Protect your medical information: This includes your Medicare number, Social Security number, and medical
information. Only give this information to your doctors and health care providers. Be careful about giving your personal information to people who offer free services or other incentives in return for your Medicare number or Social Security number. Similarly, if people who are not medical professionals want to see your medical records or recommend medical services, do not let them. Social Security and Medicare will never call you to ask you for personal information, so be wary of scammers posing as government agencies or banks trying to request this information. 2. Do not accept services that you do not need: Some dishonest providers might pressure you into receiving tests or services that are not medically necessary. Billing Medicare for unnecessary services and equipment is a type of Medicare fraud. You
can report pressure from health care providers to receive extra services. 3. Review your Medicare Summary Notices (MSN) or Explanation of Benefits (EOB): Reviewing these documents can help you to verify that you actually received the services listed. For example, if your Explanation of Benefits from your Part D plan indicates that the plan paid for a medication you didn’t receive, this could be a sign of fraud. Keep in mind that it can be difficult to tell whether charges are legitimate if you received services from several doctors around the same time or
you take many medications. One way to keep track is to use a health care journal to record all medical services and items you receive. You can compare your notes to notices above to help you detect possible fraud. 4. Verify information that you receive about Medicare Advantage and Pard D plans: You should verify everything that a plan broker tells you regarding a Medicare Advantage plan. For example, if a broker tells you that your doctor is in the plan’s network, call your doctor to confirm this. If you feel that you are receiving false information from a Medicare Advantage plan or Part D

plan representative, you can contact 800-Medicare to verify a plan’s information. Medicare Advantage plans must follow specific guidelines when marketing their plans, and cannot provide you misleading or false information to get you to enroll in their plan. If you receive a suspicious or confusing MSN or EOB, contact your provider or pharmacy first to ask for an explanation. Medical claims can be complicated to read, and reviewing them with your provider or pharmacy might reveal that the charges were legitimate or that a billing error was to blame. If you are still unsatisfied with the answer you receive, or if you suspect fraud, you should report the issue. It is helpful to have as many details as possible when reporting suspected fraud,
such as specific names, locations, and times. If you have Original Medicare, you can call 800-Medicare to report the suspected fraud. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you can call your plan directly. Regardless of whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan, you can contact the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) at 800-447-8477. When Medicare investigates the potential fraud, your name will not be used if you do not want it to be. Volunteers set to help at AARP Tax-Aide sites W
elcome to our AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites. Our sites are staffed with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers who have been trained and are certified by the IRS to prepare a range of individual income tax returns. Take a moment to read the following information, which will ensure a smooth process for both you and the volunteers at our sites. Do not ask that a volunteer make any exceptions in your case. If you have questions that we cannot answer, you may need to consult a paid tax professional.
Our appointment schedule rules, for sites that require an appointment. If you can’t make your appointment, you need to call to inform us as soon as you know. Our appointments are set up to handle one return per appointment. You are responsible for the accuracy of your return. You are to ensure the return is complete and accurate before you sign the Form 8879. There are some types of returns that we cannot assist you with. Review the poster which is available at each site for a list of circumstances which are deemed “out of
scope.� The Client Intake form must be fully and accurately completed before your return can be started. Taxpayers will be called for assistance in the order listed on the signin sheet, or appointment schedule. If you have a joint return, it will require the signature of both spouses. If your spouse is not present at the site, then you will have to obtain your spouse’s signature and return the forms to the site before the return can be e-filed. Once your return is prepared, it will be given a quality review by a sec-
ond trained and certified volunteer in order to help ensure that it is thorough and accurate. This quality review service is done for your benefit to ensure that you receive the best service that we can provide. You can expect our volunteers to treat you in a courteous and professional manner. In return, our volunteers expect you to treat them with courtesy as well. Aging and disabled resource, ITAC selection centers Lee County Council on Aging (LCCOA) and Whiteside County Senior Center (WCSC) are selection centers for the free amplified telephone program sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation (ITAC). You need to be certified as hard of hearing, be an Illinois resident, and have a landline telephone to qualify for this program. Please bring your phone bill with all the pages, proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it) and we will help you with this program. LCCOA and WCSC have outreach caseworkers who provide Options counseling, Medicare counseling, information and assistance to anyone who is 60 or older and persons with disabilities. The caseworkers are Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. They receive training on a variety of programs and network with several agencies in order to be informed of the options available to their clients. WCSC also offers a monthly Medicare Information Class. In order for our caseworkers to best assess your needs, please ask what to bring when making your appointment or bring all of the following information – Driver’s license or state ID, proof Sauk Valley Media
