2015 membership campaign starts soon Save the date for Santa’s Workshop at LCCOA Saturday, Dec. 6 Santa’s Workshop & Breakfast will be Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Dixon Senior Center and Post House Ballroom, 100 W. Second St., Dixon. Join us for breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the senior center. The cost is $3 for adults, and $1.50 for children 9 and under. Pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus will be from 8 to 11 a.m. in the ballroom at no cost. Santa’s Workshop, with gifts to purchase, (50 cents to $3) will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Post House Ballroom. Before you leave, don’t forget to pick up your reindeer food to take home and put out for the reindeer!

Fifth Annual Santa’s Workshop (For kids in fourth grade and younger) 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 13, Whiteside County Senior Center Breakfast with Santa will be served from 8 to 10:30 a.m. ($3 for adults, $1.50 for children) Picture taken with Santa, printed onsite, for $2 The elves have been busy making gifts, and children love to give gifts to their Moms, Dads, family members and special people in their lives. Our workshop provides a wonderful low-cost way for kids to do their holiday shopping! Gifts range from 50 cents to $3. Children can shop with a team of special elves, and even wrap their own gifts! This is a wonderful way to teach children the gift of giving!

bership dollars really help toward keeping us going. I hate to have to point it out all the time, but in this time of rising prices and shrinking grants, our membership dollars have to stretch further. And what better time to send it in than Dec. 2, this year’s date for the annual Giving Tuesday? In the wake of Black Friday and
Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is set aside every year for you to consider giving to your favorite nonprofit organizations. Using some of that money you saved during the Thanksgiving sales can really go far when given to an organization such as LCCOA. Thanks for your generosity. December is always a fun time here at the center, as we get ready for the Christmas holiday. Join us on Monday, Dec. 1, as we “deck the walls” with festive decorations and more. On Saturday, Dec. 6, we participate in Dixon’s annual Christmas Walk weekend by hosting Breakfast with Santa and Santa’s Workshop.
Come enjoy breakfast in the Senior Center, and then take the kids or grandkids upstairs to the beautifully decorated Post House Ballroom, where the young ones can shop for gifts for their adult relatives and siblings, guided by some of Santa’s elves. We can even do the wrapping for them, and no gift costs more than $3! Free pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus can be taken, there are crafts to make, and don’t forget to take home some “Reindeer Food” to leave out for Rudolph and the gang on Christmas Eve. See you there. Come in at 10 a.m. Dec.
10 and test your knowledge of how to spell some common Christmas words at our next (relaxed) spelling bee. These are for fun, with no pressure, so come and try your hand. The spelling bee will be followed at 12:30 p.m. by a special Christmas Karaoke Program sponsored by Home Bound Healthcare. Come out and enjoy or participate in some fun Christmas singing. As we close out one year and begin to look forward to the new one, I want to thank everyone for their continued support and wish you all the happiest of holiday seasons. Merry Christmas! Geoff

Our staff tries to offer new events when people suggest them and others show an interest in them. Let us know if you would like to see us add a new activity. December is membership month, and current members will be sent a letter with a 2015 Membership Renewal form. Please complete
the form and return your membership fee to us. Membership fees are $30 per couple and $20 for an individual. Membership fees help to support our daily activities, programs, and special events at the WCSC. Membership is a great way to support the WCSC! If you would like to make an additional gift, just mark it on the form! Please contact us if you would like to become a member. Businesses wishing to help support the WCSC can contact us for more information on our donor levels and sponsorship opportunities. We greatly appreciate everyone’s support! On your next visit, please stop by the reception desk and pick up your personal “WCSC Keytag” so you can scan in and identify the activities you will be attend-
ing each day. We have implemented the “My Senior Center” software program to help us better track those who use our facilities or participate in our numerous programs and activities. Just touch the icons on the screen for the activity, program or appointment you are attending and the information will be stored in our new database. If you forget to check in or attended additional activities, you can update your record on the way out. Those attending lunch will have their keytag scanned at lunch, so we won’t have to write down your name every time you eat with us. This software package will allow us to generate daily, monthly, and annual statistics in a matter of seconds rather than spending several days
accumulating all of the paper lists and counting them by hand. This information will be used to pursue new grant opportunities. No information will be shared outside the WCSC! We appreciate your help in making this transition, and we look forward to assisting you in learning how to use the equipment! Please remember to check on your neighbors or friends who don’t have family in the area to make sure they are being taken care of during the holiday season! It is the season of giving, so give a little of your time and help someone! Your time and effort will make this an even more enjoyable holiday season. he holiday seasons are upon us! It is important to take time to count your blessings and give thanks for all you have received this past year. The Whiteside County Senior Center Board, staff, and volunteers wish you and your family a very blessed holiday season! Do you have younger children who you would like to experience the importance of giving to others? Bring them to our Fifth Annual Santa’s Workshop and Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 13 at WCSC. Children and adults can enjoy some great pancakes
and sausage, get their picture taken with Santa, and the children can shop for their family in Santa’s Workshop with the help of Santa’s elves. Check the front page for more details! If you would like to help Santa fill up his workshop, please drop gently used toys, ornaments, beanie babies, or small toys by the WCSC! We can always use gifts for dads, such as small tools, ties, flashlights, fishing equipment, golf balls, T-shirts, and more. h, December! Jennifer, our operations manager, is excited that there is a radio station that already is playing all Christmas music. She’s displeased when I say 2 weeks before is perfect for me. Stores are filled with Christmas gifts, and it’s not even Thanksgiving yet as I write this. Actually, there were Christmas displays along with Halloween this year. Let’s just hope Labor Day remains safe from this assault. Remember, you can rent the ballroom for your Christmas party with family or friends. Think about a Sunday afternoon to bring in your food, open presents, play games, and throw the wrapping paper and garbage in our dumpster. No getting the house ready, no clean-up after; we’ll do that. Check out our prices

RIDING THE PEACE TRAIN
Whiteside County Senior Center and Whiteside County Public Transportation got on “track� with the “Peace Train.� The YWCA of Sauk Valley invited the community to “Jump on the Peace Train� for this year’s celebration of the annual YWCA Week Without Violence. The YWCA has been doing this across the country since 1995. The Whiteside County Senior Center also made its own Peace Train (right).

The Whiteside County Senior Center once again participated in Operation Stand Down on Oct. 3 at the Rock Falls Armory. Standdown is a resource fair for veterans, with more than 40 vendors providing information about access to housing, health care and other services.
ith Halloween over, and Thanksgiving on the way, we can prepare ourselves for the next phase of the seasons. The weather has been moderate and I am sure we are all thankful we have avoided the snow. Like winter approaching, so are other changes in the air. Thanksgiving is the time of year to celebrate all the reasons to be thankful. We are all sad to see our former head cook, Jackie go, but will be forever grateful for her commitment to all the citizens who had the privilege in enjoying all the meals she made, the hospitality she provided, and for her devotion to making the center feel like a family. I am privileged to be given this opportunity by Jackie to be her replacement as she retires. I can only hope to make her proud for the many months of training, mentoring, and preparation for head cook.

Many of you have already gotten to meet me once a week on Tuesdays, but I would like to formally introduce myself. My name is San Juana Escobar, I am 38-years-old, and a proud mother of five children. I will have completed my internship at Sauk Valley Community College this December with an Associate’s Degree in business management. I am proud and privileged to be given the honor to provide my services to all the faithful citizens, staff, and volunteers of the center. I hope to provide a warm environment for all who attend our meals and activities. I pride myself in welcoming everyone who steps in our doors, and can’t wait to get to know you. Please feel free to ask any questions or concerns you may have for me. Thank you all for making this transition a welcome one. I would like to thank all the distributors that help to keep our costs
down by providing us with fresh products, produce, bread, and the – oh so yummy donuts and cakes every morning. Without the Sauk Valley Food Bank, Salvation Army, Kroger’s, County Market, and Poci’s, we wouldn’t be able to provide the generous meals at an affordable cost. I also want to thank the devoted volunteers, they are the heart of our kitchen. Thanks also to WalMart Distribution Center for providing the community with free meals. Most of all, thanks to the citizens who make it possible to continue the center. Santa’s Workshop is approaching on Dec. 13, and we could use volunteers for this event. Golden Kiwanis seeks new members Did you know that the Dixon Golden Kiwanis club meets at 9 a.m. every Tuesday morning at the Senior Citizens Center, 100 W .Second in Dixon. They welcome anyone to attend meetings. The purpose of Golden K, along with the other branches of Kiwanis International is to support various programs in the area that pertain to children such as CASA, Shining Star, Tales for Tots at the library, and several other local organizations. Aging and disabled resource, ITAC centers Lee County Council on Aging and Whiteside County Senior Center are selection centers for the free amplified telephone program sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation. You need to be certified as hard of hearing, be an Illinois resident, and have a landline telephone to qualify for this program. Please bring your phone bill with all the pages, proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it) and we will help you with this program. LCCOA and WCSC have outreach caseworkers who provide Options Counseling, Medicare Counseling, information and assistance to anyone who is 60 or older and persons with disabilities. The caseworkers are Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. They receive training on a variety of programs and network with several agencies in
order to be informed of the options available to their clients. WCSC also offers a monthly Medicare Information Class. In order for our caseworkers to best assess your needs, please ask what to bring when making your appointment

Oct. 22 was the Halloween Line Dance Party at Whiteside County Senior Center. Dancers dressed up in costume and enjoyed an evening of fun!

Holiday Mail for Heroes at WCSC 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 The program is an effort by the American Red Cross to enable Americans to “Give Something That Means Something” this holiday season. So, bring your Christmas cards, cards of thanks, and cards of encouragement to the center. We will all sign the cards, and you may write a message in them. We will mail the cards to “Holiday Mail for Heroes” and it will distribute them. Please come and honor our servicemen.

For kids in fourth grade and under; 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 13 Breakfast with Santa is from 8 to 10:30 a.m. The price is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children. Pictures taken with Santa will be $2 and printed on site. Children are able to shop for loved ones with one of Santa’s elves, and have their gifts wrapped by a team of Santa’s helpers.
