LCCOA to continue our important work on behalf of the senior population of Lee County – people like “Susan,” who recently came in and said she had heard that we had a phone program that could help her better understand what was being said on the phone. After Samantha helped her acquire her free ITAC (Illinois Telecommunications Access Corp.) phone, she let us
know that, for the first time in years she was able to enjoy conversations with her family, who are spread across the country. Another user commented that now they could understand what was being pushed at him when telemarketers called. He said that with all the scams aimed at the seniors on the phone, this alone was tremendously valuable. That brings me to the next big event on the calendar. August is always the month for our big Luau party in the Post House Ballroom. This year it is on Aug. 19. Invitations were recently sent to members, but you do not need to be a member to attend. Advance tickets are available at the
Post House Community Center, or you can purchase them at the door. However, your ticket will cost you $2 more if you wait until the day of the event to buy it, so I would advise getting them early. If it seems we spend a lot (some might say too much) of our time on fundraising, I’m afraid you are right. We are all aware of the problems the state and federal governments are having financially lately, and since the vast majority of our services are offered for free, and our reliable grant resources are shrinking, we need to keep asking. It’s how we keep the doors open. So, if you got one of those invitations, and you believe in or support what we’re doing,
please buy tickets to the luau. If you can’t make it in person, let us know, and we will make sure they are used by someone who can benefit from your generosity. If you are not a member of LCCOA (and please remember that there is no age requirement; anyone can be a member) I ask you to consider joining for only $20 a year. Thank you. I’d like to close by asking, once again, how you like our new name for what used to be called the Dixon Senior Center. Remember, we are now the Post House Community Center – serving ALL of the residents of Lee County with great programming and, we hope, education and fun. Have a great month!
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. We have changed the focus of the CRC from teaching large classes to doing more individual or small group instruction, hosted by Terry and Ken, two long-time volunteers. Please call to schedule a time with them as their hours are limited at the Senior Center. I want to say a special thanks to Terry and Ken for all of their assistance in making the transition in the CRC!
Our MySeniorCenter software has been very helpful in tracking those who attend the daily social activities, special events, trips, and our daily meals. In the first 6 months of 2015, we had 628 different people join us for lunch for approximately 5,400 meals. In the past, we had to estimate the number of people who ate with us, as no one wanted to hand track all of the specifics of who was attending each meal. The software can also give us the numbers instantly; in the past it would take several people several hours. Remember, the WCSC’s daily lunch is available to everyone! You don’t have to be a senior to eat at the WCSC. We do request a “suggested” $5 donation to help cover
meal costs and operation of the kitchen. Speaking of lunch, check out the August menu as many of the regular favorites, including roast beef, meat loaf, pork roast, and Italian beef, are scheduled along with a few new meals, including a pancake and sausage lunch on Friday, Aug. 14. On Aug. 21, we will celebrate Senior Citizen’s day with several games and a couple of door prizes. Come join the fun and stay for a special corned beef and cabbage boil for lunch. If you enjoy playing cards, please check out the Daily Events page as we have a variety of card games going on at the Senior Center. We will be
hosting a Euchre Tournament on Sunday, Aug. 30 with sign-in scheduled for 12:30 p.m. There will be a 50/50 drawing to help support the WCSC during the tournament. If one day a month is not enough Euchre for you, consider stopping by and playing on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. The WCSC is a great place for seniors to come and enjoy a variety of social activities, listen to educational programs, eat lunch, get assistance from ADRC with State and Federal programs to help seniors stay in their homes, and spend some quality time with others who are enjoying their retirement. Though I am not a big winter fan, I will admit that the cold months can have a certain kind of beauty. However, since the summer seems so fleeting, we sure take advantage of it around here. And that’s been the case with the Lee County Council on Aging as well. What a July we had! I certainly hope you took advantage of some of the great events we had
recently, including our annual picnic, the inaugural Petunia City Brass Drum and Bugle Corps show (wasn’t it great?), and the first LCCOA golf outing. This Thursday, July 30, is our third Battle of the Brains trivia contest. If you’re reading this when it comes out in the paper, there’s still time for you to put together a team and challenge for the trivia prize. I hope you do. Your participation in any or all of these events helps us greatly here at

Families with children will be getting back into the school routine in a few weeks and that impacts almost everyone, including the Whiteside County Senior Center and Whiteside County Public Transportation staffs. You only have a few weeks to get in your summer vacation or sneak in
another short vacation or a few days off from work before the busy times return. We have had a very exciting summer at the Senior Center with changes taking place in the Big Room, including painting the new Welcome Center area and reorganizing of the Computer Resource Center. The CRC is available for those who need access to the internet to check their email or Facebook pages. General computer use includes Microsoft Office products such as

What is an advance beneficiary notice? Dear Marci, I recently went to see my doctor to receive some preventive care screenings, and wanted to get an EKG test. My doctor said that Medicare might not cover this test, and gave me something to sign called an Advance Beneficiary Notice. I’m unsure whether I should sign this notice. What is the purpose of an Advance Beneficiary Notice? – Charles, Phoenix, Arizona Dear Charles, An Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) is a notice you should receive when a provider or supplier offers you a service or item that Medicare normally covers but may not cover for you. Know that ABNs apply only to people with Original Medicare; people with Medicare Advantage plans will not receive an ABN. The ABN must list the reason that your doctor thinks Medicare will not cover the EKG. The notice serves as a
warning that Medicare might not pay for your care; it is not an official determination from Medicare about whether or not care is covered. It may still be possible to get Medicare to cover your care if you agree to pay for it if Medicare formally denies payment. If you receive an ABN, and decide to move forward with the item or service, you must select Option 1 on the ABN form. Option 1 says you agree to pay for care in the event Medicare denies coverage. It also requires your provider to submit the bill to Medicare after providing you care. If you do not select Option 1, you will have no chance of Medicare coverage because your provider will not be required to submit the bill to Medicare. You will know if the service is covered by checking the claim on your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN). An MSN is a summary of the health care services you have received over the

past three months, and it describes whether Medicare has covered these services. If the claim is denied, you can appeal by following the directions on the MSN. If the claim is approved, the MSN will say how much you owe. If you paid the provider more than that, the provider must refund you the excess amount. Keep in mind, by agreeing to get care and signing Option 1 on ABN, you must be willing to pay up front for care at the time you get it and you risk being responsible for all charges if Medicare denies payment. In some cases, this can amount to a significant bill. Hello from the Emporium Thrift Center Let’s talk again. How are things with you? Very well, we hope. We have some exciting news! You can now like us on Facebook!!! We will be updating regularly. You can be aware of the special sales or anything new at the The Emporium. We owe a thank you to our friend, Lori, for helping get us on Facebook. Our racks and shelves are well stocked for your shopping pleasure. And it’s always a pleasure to have you shop with us. Some recent new items
are Japanese tea services, three different colors and all painted designs. They are very fragile and beautiful. Other new items are a collection of piano music boxes, each different sizes, colors and melodies. Also to all of you that watched the TV series M*A*S*H, we just received a donation of all the shows on video. They won’t last long and are priced reasonable. We know some of you crafters are preparing for the fall and Christmas craft shows. We have many things that could be used in your crafting at a reasonable
price. We have baskets of all sizes and shapes. If you like to use old buttons, we are the place to shop. Right now we have a big selection of embroidery floss. I will just list a few of our secrets – old cutter quilt, doilies, ribbon, fabric, picture frames, vases, and a rack full of
crafting supplies. As your children start back to college, maybe you need some of the basics for those rooms or apartments. We have dishes, cookware, kitchen utensils, curtains, bedspreads. You might find the unusual lamp or picture. We must tell you again about our great prices. They fit everyone’s budget. When you enter our “shoe room,” you will not only find men’s and women’s shoes, but also belts, socks, stockings, gloves, umbrellas, and sometimes a pair or two of suspenders. We carry women’s shoes from size
5 up to 11 or 12. And we have purses to finish out the summer season. We invite all of you to shop at The Emporium Thrift Center, where a dollar goes a long way. All of our proceeds go to The Whiteside County Senior Center. The Emporium is located at 115 W. Third Street in Sterling, across from County Market. We are open daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, except on Wednesdays and Sundays, when we’re closed. We hope to see you soon.

LCCOA will celebrate seniors While many may not have heard about National Senior Citizens Day, it occurs every year on Aug. 21. Initiated by our local President, Ronald Reagan, in 1988, the day is set aside to acknowledge the life-long contributions our nation’s seniors have made to their community and country. President Reagan, in Proclamation 5847, stated: “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute,” Ronald Reagan said. “We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older – places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.
“Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, president of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Aug. 21, 1988 as National Senior Citizens Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” Lee County Council on Aging honors, respects and appreciates the senior community and invites all persons to stop in the center at 100 W. Second St., Dixon, on from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 21. We’ll start the day with a free breakfast served at 8:30 a.m. by your friends at Lee County Council on Aging. It’s election time at the Lee County Council on Aging LCCOA’s annual dinner meeting and election for the Board of Directors will be held on Monday, Sept. 21. The keynote speaker this year will be new Dixon Community service Officer, Mike Wilcox. This annual event is
open to all paid members of LCCOA. Members will receive an invitation, the election ballot and a short biography of each candidate in the mail. Current board members up for reelection are Diane Blaine and
Doug Farster. New candidates are Jeff Kuhn and Nancy Varga with, hopefully, a couple more to be announced later. If you are interested in voting in the election, and are not currently a paid member, you need to pay your dues to
receive a ballot. Membership for 1 year is $20 per person or $30 for a household. Also, if you are interested in being on the LCCOA Board of Directors, please call the Post House Community Center at 815-288-9236.
Triad Safety Series 2 Whiteside County Triad has planned another Safety Series event. The focus of the event is “What to do in an emergency.” Triad has been working on getting presenters to speak on emergency preparedness, tips for calling 911 and what to expect,
and fire safety. The event will be at the Sterling Moose Club, 2601 E. Lincolnway, Sterling, on Aug. 5. There will be free coffee and donuts. Whiteside County Triad generally meets on the third Tuesday of the month. Anyone is welcome to join and get
involved. Triad’s focus is to develop programs to improve safety for older adults. To check on meeting dates and times, contact Tina Shoffner at the Whiteside County Senior Center. Whiteside County Triad is on Facebook and has a Google group.

The program provides free amplified telephones or a captioning telephone to Illinois residents that are hard of hearing. It is sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corp. (ITAC). You

2015 PETUNIA FESTIVAL
EXERCISE AND EUCHRE AT WCSC People enjoy doing chair exercises on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. The instructor is Julie Hilliger. She instructs them how to properly exercise their arms and legs while sitting in a chair. This learning experience is very worthwhile, so come try it!
Many people enjoy playing euchre on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (Tuesdays at 12:30 and Thursdays at 1 p.m.). They play eight games and switch partners. It’s a quick and fun game!
