Sterling athlete turns 100 June Callighan of Sterling will celebrate her 100th birthday on June 30, 2015, with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and close friends. June was born on June 30, 1915, in Sterling, and was married to the late Robert B. Callighan. She has two children, Jane D. Martin of Sterling and Richard “Skip” Weaver of Clearwater, Florida, and one stepson, Robert W. (Joy) Callighan of Birmingham, Alabama. She has four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. June was a secretary employed by the Daily Gazette, Gary P. Hill Agency, and Book and Klocke Insurance Agency. June’s fondest childhood memories are the closeness of her family and the good times she had with her seven brothers and sisters. She was very athletic and competed in basketball, baseball, and track in high school.
She also was a cheerleader in grade school and high school. After high school, she played baseball and basketball for the Federal Girls. She still loves watching sports on TV. She is a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and served as secretary of the church council for 3 years. She also was a member of CGH Auxiliary for many years, volunteering in the gift shop, and was a member of Insurance Woman’s organization. June is known by her quick smile, her sweet disposition, and her loving acceptance of others. She always recognizes the good in people and is generous with compliments.
