There are usually between 40 and 60 items to auction during a quarter mania. Bids on these new items are from one to four quarters. Once all the bids are in – a number is drawn. If your lucky paddle number is called and you have placed a bid, you win that item – and you only paid one, two, three or four quarters! In addition to the auction, there will be a 50/50 drawing benefiting Lee County Council on Aging. Also, the vendors have a lot of specials as well as cash and carry item at the tables. hank you to everyone who attended, helped support, or sponsored the WCSC’s Annual Fundraising Concert with “Allen Edwards – The Singer” a few weeks ago! It was a success! This was the first time we promoted and sold tickets through the WCSC. A special thanks to the volunteers and staff who put in extra hours promoting and selling tickets this year! It was a unique learning experience for us and, of course, we learned
new ideas and will adjust our plans accordingly next year. We sincerely appreciate your support and remind you the proceeds from this concert goes to support the programs, activities, staffing and operation of the WCSC! May has traditionally been “membership” month at the WCSC. In January, we started offering membership renewals along with selling tickets to the concert. We had a great response, but there was some confusion,
for which I will take full responsibility, and many people didn’t realize you could renew whether or not you purchased tickets. If you didn’t get a chance to renew your membership, please feel free to stop by or mail in your renewal. Membership fees are $20 for a single and $30 for a couple, so please feel free to contact us for any additional information. Remember, your membership fees
help to support the cost of the daily activities we offer. I want to apologize to those of you who have tried to reach the WCSC or WCPT via the phone. Unfortunately, we have had issues with phones continually ringing and no one picking up or the system hanging up on people. Unfortunately, the phone is not ringing on our end, either, so please call us back. We are working frantically to get the system fixed or replaced, as your phone calls are important to us! We hope to have a solution to these problems in the very near future. The staff has planned some new activities and educational programming for June, so make

Why is it that, while summer and winter have approximately the same number of days, one of them seems to go on forever and the other one seems to go by way too fast? Maybe it’s because we pack so much into the warm months to take advantage of them?

Attorney Dan Hawkins will be here at 11 a.m. Monday, June 9, to talk about reverse mortgages and estate planning. These are topics which affect all of us, so please stop by and listen to Dan and bring your questions so he can cover your area of interest. Speaking of learning, the monthly Medicare information class will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 13, at the WCSC. And we’re also hosting one of our periodic refresher courses on the Rules of the Road with the Illinois Secretary of State’s office. If you’re a woman interested in making a change in either your diet or exercise level, the State of Illinois WISEWOMAN program will be making a special presentation over two Mondays, the 16th and 23rd. The WISEWOMAN program is packed with great information aimed at helping you take steps toward a healthier lifestyle. This is a free program, but regis-
tration is required, so call us at 288-9236 to register or for more information. June also is the month for our quarterly birthday celebration for all those born in April, May and June. The party is sponsored by Liberty Court and features cake, ice cream and more. Lastly, I would like to remind everyone that, while the downtown streets will be torn up a good part of this summer, we will still be here for your enjoyment and fun. I hope to see many of you here. Mark the calendar for Trivia Night The Post House Ballroom is hosting a Battle of the Brains Trivia Night with proceeds from this event to benefit Lee County Council on Aging. Join us for a funfilled evening of pop culture, music and random, yet factual, trivia on Thursday, July 31. Many people attended an AARP Driver Safety class at Whiteside County Senior Center. This program is a refresher course that can help you learn about the effects of aging on driving and how you can adjust your driving. Discounts are available on car insurance. Stop and shop the thrift center Yesterday, while cleaning out drawers, I found a front page newspaper write-up of the grand opening of The Emporium Thrift Center dated February 2006! It’s unreal of the passage of the years. All the hard work it took to get to where we are now. What stands out in my memory is the support of the whole community. The loyal volunteers that did and do all the work. Also all the amazing donations of goods that continue daily. Awesome! Must not forget the customers old and new that continue to shop at The Emporium. All these work together to make each day brighter. So let’s all keep on keeping on. During the middle of May, The Emporium presented a style show of all the spring fashions we have in the store. It was at the Whiteside County Senior Center, and we had an enthusiast audience cheering us on. Our models were volunteers from The Emporium and workers from WCSC. These programs bring us

all together to work for the best of WCSC. If you have not been in to check out all our spring clothes, shoes, and purses, make a time to stop in and see us. Remember, we carry men and children’s clothes too. Since spring finally arrived, we have items that can brighten up your yard. Need some extra flower pots? We never know what unusual items end up at The Emporium. As I write this article, we have a beautiful copper and slate water piece for a garden or patio. Summer time mean means coolers, serving trays, and extra picnic items. Everything is reasonably priced and provides money for the Whiteside County Senior Center. We would love to see you at the store – love old customers and welcome new ones. Stop and shop at The Emporium Thrift Center, 115 W. Third St. in Sterling. une 18 we will have a line dancing dance event in the Ballroom. Our line dancers are inviting line dancers from elsewhere to come on over and dance! Anyone who likes to dance should come to watch and participate if you wish. It’s fun to watch, and much more fun to participate. It will be held from 5:30 to 10 p.m., and the bar will be open. Also, for those of you who like trivia, please come to play on a team for our July 31 Battle of the Brains Trivia Night. This does not require a brain full of trivia, it’s a fundraiser for Lee County Council on Aging and it’s also for fun. You can come to play – get a team of up to six people, or we’ll put you on a team if you want. Or you can come to watch and cheer on your people. It’s $3 at the door for spectators, and $12 for each player. This covers our food and prize cost. Don’t be intimidated, we promise a good time! If you need a beautiful place to have a get-

You need to be certified as hard of hearing, be an Illinois resident, and have a landline telephone to qualify for this program. Please bring your phone bill with all the pages, proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it) and we will help you with this program. LCCOA and WCSC have outreach caseworkers who provide Options counseling, Medicare
counseling, information and/or assistance to anyone who is 60 or older and persons with disabilities. The caseworkers are Certified Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. They receive training on a variety of programs and network with several agencies in order to be informed of the options available to their clients. WCSC also offers a monthly Medicare information class. In order for our caseworkers to best assess your needs, please ask what to bring when making your appointment or bring all of the following
information – Driver’s license or state ID, Proof of all income for this year (Social Security benefits, pensions, interest, wages, any other income), Medicare card, Medicare Part D card, Medicaid card, value of all assets (bank accounts, CD’s, any investments, investment property, business assets, cash value of life insurance, car, house, prepaid burial, burial plots etc.), proof of income for 2013 (even if you do not file income taxes we will need tax documents for: Social Security benefits (SSA1099), pension (1099-R), interest (1099-INT), dividends (1099-DIV), wages (W-2), etc.), Social Security cards, a list of current

medications (including 30 day quantity and dosage). You should call ahead of time for an appointment. Home visits can be provided to clients who are homebound. Caseworkers also travel to several locations each month in both Lee and Whiteside counties (see below). Some assistance programs may be seasonal, may have deadlines, timeframes, or may require renewal. This month’s reminder: File for the Benefits Access Program to get a $75 license plate discount if you missed it last year. It is time for your Senior Tax Assessment Freeze and your Senior Homestead Exemption to be filled

orget the spurs and leave the horse at home, but bring the boots and the hat and get on over to Lee County Council on Aging for some line dancing fun! Learning to country line dance is not hard, but it does take some coordination and a little bit of confidence to get out there on the floor and do your thing.
This class will teach you the basic steps to some great songs. After a few classes you will able to line dance with the best. This free class welcomes all to join the fun. Class is held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday. If line dancing is not your thing, how about joining us from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

What is a Medicare Savings Program? Dear Marci, I’m enrolling in Medicare soon and I’m afraid I won’t be able to afford my Medicare costs. My neighbor has Medicare and told me that I should sign up for a Medicare Savings Program. What is a Medicare Savings Program? – Elijah, Mobile, Ala. Dear Elijah, A Medicare Savings Program is an assistance program that can help pay for your Medicare costs if you have limited finances. Keep in mind that Medicare Savings Programs may sometimes be referred to as Medicare Buy-In Programs or Medicare Premium Payment Programs. There are three main types of
Medicare Savings Programs, and each program has different eligibility requirements: Qualifying Individual: A type of Medicare Savings Program that pays for your Medicare Part B premium. In 2014, the Part B premium for most people who have Medicare Part B is $104.90 per month. An important thing to know about QI is that you will not qualify for QI if you qualify for Medicaid, the health insurance program that covers health care services for certain people with limited finances. Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary: Another type of Medicare Savings Program that pays for your Medicare Part B premium. The difference between this program and the QI Medicare Savings Program
is that you can still qualify for SLMB, even if you qualify for Medicaid. Qualified Medicare Beneficiary: A type of Medicare Savings Program that can pay for your Part B premium, in addition to Medicare deductibles, coinsurances, and copayments. QMB is the most comprehensive Medicare Savings Program and can help pay for many of your Medicare costs. Note that you can qualify for QMB, even if you qualify for Medicaid. If you qualify and get a Medicare Savings Program, you should automatically get Extra Help, the federal assistance program that helps pay Medicare prescription drug costs for people with limited finances. A Medicare Savings Program can
also act as a way for Medicareeligible people to automatically enroll in Medicare outside of formal enrollment periods. Medicare Savings Programs also get rid of premium penalties for those who did not enroll in Medicare in a timely manner. To qualify for a Medicare Savings Program, you must meet your state’s income and asset eligibility guidelines. You must also have Medicare Part A, the part of Medicare that covers most inpatient hospital care. If you do not have Part A because you have to pay a Part A premium, know that the QMB Medicare Savings Program can help you pay your Part A premium. Medicare Savings Program eligibility requirements vary by state, so you should contact
your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) or local Medicaid office to learn more about whether you qualify for a Medicare Savings Program in your state. Keep in mind that you should still apply for the Medicare Savings Program even if your income is slightly above your state’s income and asset limits, since certain types of income and assets may not be counted. You can find the number for your local SHIP by going online and visiting www.shiptalk.org. – Marci Marci’s Medicare Answers is a service of the Medicare Rights Center, the nation’s largest independent source of information and assistance for people with Medicare.

ver the past fiscal year, WCPT has been working hard to provide rides to residents of all ages throughout Whiteside County. Our ridership goal this year is 45,138 rides. At the end of April we provided 37,170 rides. We are confident that we will meet our goal this year and would like to thank all of our riders who ride with us! We are happy that our community members are getting where they need to go.

Summer fun Summer is already upon us and that
means WCPT is getting ready for numerous community events and a partnership with the YMCA. Our first community event will be June 2nd where we will sell concessions for Monsters Inc. to help raise funds for our transit system. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of overachiever’s angst chronicling the experiences of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime.
