Centenarian continues knitting Rena Heusinkveld of Morrison will celebrate her 100th birthday April 30, 2015. Born Rena Akker in 1915 in rural Fulton, she married Clarence Heusinkveld in 1935, and raised four children in Morrison, Barbara Phillips, Harvey, Roger, and Richard. After retiring from General Elec-

tric, Rena focused her attention on volunteering in a variety of ways at Ebenezer Reformed Church, including serving as librarian, and was an active member of the quilting group. She continues to knit scarves and hats for various children’s organizations, and rarely misses a Cubs game on television. As a special way to preserve these memorable occasions, quarter-, halfor full-page announcements can be purchased. Paid announcements are determined by word count: no more than 125 words for a quarter page, no more than 250 words for a half page, and up to 340 words for a full page. Those paying for announcements will have the opportunity to proof them before publication. Customers will be called when the announcement is ready to be proofed. At that time, any corrections or additions can be made as needed at SVM’s Dixon and Sterling offices. For convenience, proofs will be emailed without calls whenever possible. Photos may be submitted in color or black and white, and in any size. Emailed photos should be in JPEG format with a resolution of 200 and a width of at least 5 inches for best quality. in a paid format; the announcement size will be determined by the editor. Reunions are for area residents who are gathering, or have gathered, for a family or class reunion. Reunion items will be edited due to space limitations, and lists of all those attending are not available in the free format. Photos also are not available for a free announcement, but can be used in any of the paid announcements. If a large group photo is submitted, only one can be used in the quarter-page format, one photo is recommended in the half-page format, and up to four normally can be used in the fullpage format. Large group photos with long lists of names may require at least a half-page paid announcement. Note: A group photo for a class reunion only can be submitted at no charge for the Scrapbook page of SV Weekend by email to photos@saukvalley.com or in person. For publication in Celebrations, class reunions of 70 years and more will be available in the quarterpage format at no charge, with a photo allowed. Five-generation and four-generation photos with names, relationships, and places of residence of those pictured may be submitted for publication. 100th Birthday

Polo woman recalls early life with no electricity Lucille Rose (Schryver) Lovell will celebrate her 100th birthday April 18, 2015. She loved her 99th year, but it’s time to celebrate a century of memories. She was born in rural Polo to Erastus and Rose Schryver, at home, on Lake Fern Road. The home had no electricity and no indoor plumbing. She and her older brother, Jesse, were very close, and when Jesse started to school he cried the first day because he missed his sister. The teacher said that Lucille could join him for first grade, and they walked to the Doty country school a mile and a half away for 8 years. Lucille learned to play the piano, and she played at the Brick Church for Sunday morning service and Sunday school. When they were seniors, their father fell from the windmill. They were afraid he may not survive to see them graduate, but he did survive. On June 1, 1933, Lucille and Jesse graduated from Polo

Community High school, and Lucille is the only surviving member of the class. There were six couples who would go to the Sterling Coliseum rooftop to dance on Saturday nights. After the dance was over, they went straight home. Her first job was doing housework for a farmer with two small girls, whose wife was ill. Her second job was working in Mount Morris at Kable Printing for 6 years. In 1940, Lucille married William “Bill” Lovell in Clinton, Iowa, at the same time as another couple. In 1942, Bill joined the service, and they lived in Georgia, Texas, and California. While in California, Lucille’s first job lasted only 1 day. She worked in a canteen where she had to get the drinks out of a tank, wipe them off, and serve them to soldiers and collect the money. She then worked for Herbert Hoover Jr. at Consolidated Engineering, soldering parts.
