It’s coming together as One BY JERMAINE PIGEE DIXON – Before the city’s event-planning agencies can get on the same page, someone has to write the book on how to do it. Enter an advisory task force. Its task: help make Dixon One a reality. Dixon One is a group the city is creating to consolidate Main Street, the Riverfront Commission and Dixon Tourism. But in order to turn three groups – each with its own interests and goals – into one, the city will need a little help sorting everything out. That will be the job of the task force. But before the task force can come together, someone has to come up with a roll call. That’ll be Mayor Li Arellano Jr.’s job. He’ll pick members he’d like to see on the nineperson task force, which will include representatives from the three groups that will be consolidated, along with members of the City Council and the public. Their job will be to sort out what Dixon One could ultimately look like and make recommendations to the council. After Arellano makes his picks, the council will vote on them. After that, members of the task force can get to work. Members will appoint a chairman and the group will hold regular meetings. And they’ll have their work cut out for them. The city’s goal is for the task force to get its job done in 6 months, after which time the group will

be dissolved. Providing, of course, it’s completed its task. If the group needs more time after 6 months, it can request it from the council. Since taking office in May, council members have cited the need for multiple city event-planning agencies to get on the same page, and coordinate their efforts. During a November meeting, Councilman Mitch Tucker said Dixon One was progressing slowly, and he wanted it to “get moving.” The task force should help Dixon One do just that. “With the advisory committee, you have all these groups at the table and you can have discussions on different ideas and how to best implement them,” Arellano said. “With this group, you can get realtime discussion.” Arellano said the hope is that the council can approve task force members at its Dec. 21 meeting. He said he’s looking for people who have been directly involved in the various aspects of marketing for the city. “This way, we can get the ball rolling faster,” he said. “We want them to go through ideas such as marketing, shared secretaries, how to do space sharing and how they can coordinate to better promote Dixon’s festivals. Divers drop bait for frisky fish

On June 19, 2009, a derailment in Rockford killed one person and sent about 79,000 gallons of an ethanol and gasoline mixture into a creek that flowed into the Kishwaukee River, then into the Rock. STERLING – The Oppold Marina will look a little bare until spring. The aging dock system was demolished about a month ago, and it will be replaced before the marina opens again for boating. “The pilings were rotting because they have been in there for more than 40 years,” Sterling Parks Director Larry Schuldt said. “The whole structure was removed so we can put in a new pier and docks in the spring.” Dixon-based Wendler Engineering Services inspected the old system and determined that 13 of the 16 pilings were badly deteriorated. The park district leases

the marina from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, so a fair amount of paperwork was created along the way. “We must get [IDNR’s] permission before we can do any work there,” Schuldt said. The lease agreement calls for the park district to pay for any improvements made to the marina. The bill for the project will be about $14,000, with $9,000 spent on demolition. Director of Park and Planning Doug Jacobs said the new vinyl deck and slip assembly will look similar to the original dock system. Two more slips will be built, and a bridge will connect the sidewalk that leads to the Harbor House. The marina, on Stouffer

Road, is on 31 acres of land. The lease agreement was first signed in 1968. In 1971, a grant fully funded the addition of the Harbor House, park roads and lighting, a launch ramp, the main dock and parking lots. The park district, over the years, has dredged Oxbow Lake, added picnic shelters, playground areas, boat slips and made landscaping improvements at the marina. The marina is open year round, from dawn until dusk. An electronic gate is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Harbor House is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

‘The Christmas Star from Afar’ Polo High grad creates new holiday tradition BY AVALYNDA CASEY For Sauk Valley Media

ome children find the Christmas star on high. Others find it down low. It all depends on where Mom or Dad, or Grandma or Grandpa, choose to hide it. “The Christmas Star From Afar” is an interactive advent activity for young children. The star is hidden somewhere around the home every day. When they find it, they move the wise men to its new location, until the trio ends up at the manger with the newborn baby Jesus on Christmas morning. It’s creator, Natalie Ard, 38, is a 1995 Polo High School grad. She now lives in California with her husband, Dave, and their children Gracyn, 9, Michael, 7, and Lucy, 4. Her game comes with an activity book, the wooden star, a wooden nativity scene that matches the artwork in the book (and can be used for the family creche), and optional scripture to use throughout the month. It’s also flexible, since some families celebrate Epiphany on Jan. 6. “I wanted to encourage families to celebrate the wise men any way they want to – they are following the star to Jesus, the light of the world, and that is what Christmas is about,” Ard said. Two things influenced its creation. “We tried [Elf on a Shelf], but at the time my daughter was 3, and she was afraid he would tattle to Santa. We composed a letter to him, and asked him to go live somewhere else – and he did,” Ard

said. She also was searching for a way for her children to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, she said. “I wanted our own tradition to celebrate Jesus, so I cut out a cardboard star, used our current nativity, and started it with my kids.” During Christmas time in 2012, Ard shared her idea with church friends. They loved it, and she bought her domain name that day. A friend helped her with the game’s graphic design, but Ard, who loves arts and crafts and using pastels and charcoal, sketched the characters herself. “I took one step at a time. It wasn’t easy, but I was dedicated to it.” Her parents, Jim and Robin Jefford of Dixon, helped. Jim made the first stable with his jigsaw from her measurements; he shipped them to Ard and she decoupaged images onto Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, and the animals. “Natalie loved to draw at 4 or 5,” her mom said. “She tried this game first with her family, and I thought, ‘Other families would enjoy this’, and they do.” Ard learned she had a knack for prose, too. Her retired Polo High English teacher, Julie McGuire, became the first to read the book. “While I had her in class, her dad was the principal, and they were such a close-knit family. I could tell that she was very gifted, and I wasn’t surprised that she could do this.” McGuire said. By Christmas 2013, Ard had a manufacturer, and by October 2014 she had her first

Get creative with gingerbread BY KATHY MORRISON Tribune News Service

So many flavors and aromas are associated with Christmas and holiday treats: peppermint, chocolate, anise and orange, to name just a few. In my family, the first and foremost flavor has always been gingerbread. The soft, spicy molassesladen cookies, thickly rolled and decorated with a simple icing, are a tradition that essentially is linked to my great-grandmotherâ€™s Swedish background. Rolled Gingerbread Cookies Makes: About 3 dozen, depending on size of cutters This recipe was adapted from the 1956 edition of â€œBetty Crockerâ€™s Picture Cook Book.â€? Non-transfat shortening contains more water, so if you are using old-style trans-fat shortening, cut back the flour by 1/4 cup. It can be doubled, but in that case a heavy-duty stand mixer is essential. Note: Donâ€™t use insulated cookie sheets for this recipe â€“ they donâ€™t get hot enough. For cookies: 1/3 cup vegetable shortening 1 cup packed brown cane sugar 1 1/2 cups (one 12-ounce bottle) dark molasses 2/3 cup cold water 6 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground all-

spice 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground ginger For icing: 2 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons water, or enough to make icing easy to spread without being drippy Food coloring, optional Decors such as Red Hots, colored sugar, jimmies and holiday sprinkles Mix the shortening, sugar and molasses thoroughly in a large bowl. Blend in the water â€” the mixture will look curdled, but thatâ€™s OK. Whisk the flour, soda, salt and spices together in a separate bowl. Add the flour mixture to the molasses mixture by thirds until flour is thoroughly incorporated. Chill dough for a least an hour, but longer (even overnight) is better. The dough will be fairly sticky still. Roll out thick to very thick on a generously floured cloth â€” about 1/3-inch thick seems to work best. Dip cookie cutters in flour before cutting. Place cookies on a lightly greased baking sheet, leaving plenty of space between them. Bake at 350 degrees until, when touched lightly with finger, no imprint remains, about 12-14 minutes. (Tops will be very lightly cracked.) For icing, stir ingredients

together and, if desired, add food coloring. If icing gets too thick to spread, add a few drops of water and stir well. Testing and tasting â€˘ I prefer Brer Rabbit dark molasses (green bottle) for this recipe. The brown sugar can be light or dark; Iâ€™ve used both with success. â€˘ Be sure to use tall-sided cookie cutters. Those little ones meant for sugar cookies will only get clogged with this dough. â€˘ The cookies when removed from the oven will seem a little soft; they do not get browner. Gingerbread Thumbprints Makes: About 41/2 dozen The flaxseed meal/water combination substitutes for 1 egg. The filling can be whatever you like. I tested three: a lemon glaze, cherry jam and Meyer lemon marmalade. They all worked well with the gingery cookie. 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal 3 tablespoons water 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) Earth Balance buttery sticks, at room temperature 1 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup molasses 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for rolling)

Filling options: About 3/4 cup total of fruit jam, marmalade, peanut butter and/or a glaze (see below) Combine the flaxseed meal and water in a small bowl, letting the mixture sit for at least 2 minutes. Set aside. Place flour, spices, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl and whisk together. In a larger bowl, cream the buttery sticks and sugar for a minute or two, until somewhat fluffy. Add the molasses and the flaxseed mixture, mixing until combined. Slowly blend in the flour mixture until all the flour is incorporated. Cover and chill the dough at least 1 hour, preferably several hours or overnight. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and place a sheet of baking parchment on a cooking sheet. Scoop out dough to make balls that are about 1 inch, and roll them in the granulated sugar. Place balls about 2 inches apart on baking sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, turning the pan about half way through. The cookies should be set along the edges and have some cracks in the top but still be soft. Remove cookie sheet to a cooling rack and immediately use a spoon or other utensil to make thumbprints in the cookies while theyâ€™re hot. (Thumbs not recommended for hot cookies.) Cool about 5 minutes, then transfer the cookies from the pan to the rack

Since the filling is not cooked, these cookies should be stored in a single layer. Testing and tasting â€˘ This recipe was tested using regular (not insulated) cookie sheets. â€˘ I used a melon baller (the back of the smaller scoop) to make the indentations for the filling. The handle gave me more control than a measuring spoon. â€˘ The lemon glaze filling ingredients were about 1 cup powdered sugar, the zest from 1/2 of a lemon and about 3 tablespoons lemon juice and a bit of water, but it was refrigerated overnight and thickened, so less juice and/or water might be what you want if you use it immediately. It was fairly thick when I spooned it into the indentations. â€˘ Testers in the newsroom liked the texture of the cookies, with the tartness of the various fillings providing a good contrast to the sugar. â€œAll the fillings I tried (lemon/ cherry) are good,â€? one

wrote. â€œAmazed that itâ€™s no egg/dairy.â€? Cookie-baking tips Here are a few of Kathy Morrisonâ€™s favorites: â€˘ Before starting, check your baking soda and baking powder for potency. Be sure your spices are fresh. â€˘ Read the whole recipe through to make sure you have the right ingredients and the right equipment. Do you need parchment paper? Do eggs have to be separated? Does anything have to be pre-chilled? Make time for that, too. â€˘ If youâ€™re planning a whole day of baking, eat breakfast first and plan your lunch. That way you wonâ€™t be noshing off the raisins and chocolate chips all day. â€˘ Donâ€™t soften butter in the microwave â€“ it wonâ€™t hold air if it gets melted. Instead, let it sit out until you can press a fingertip into it and leave a mark. â€˘ Avoid putting cold dough on a hot cookie sheet. Alternate sheets or cool off a warm one with cold water. Or put the dough on a parchment sheet ready to slide onto the metal pan when itâ€™s
