Fifth-graders rock book Pre-teens relish chance to publish findings BY JERMAINE PIGEE

STERLING – Out of sight, out of mind? Not for Jozlyn Johnson, whose class at Lincoln Elementary School will publish its own book. “We are nervous because this is not just for our class and people that we know,” the fifth-grader said. “This is for people that we will never really see, and they will be reading our writing.” Students in Suzi Hesser’s class at Lincoln have spent the past few weeks working on a book through a project called Authentic Writing Through Book Publishing and Sharing. As part of the project, students are creating a book about the different types of rock in the world. Each student will author a page in the book. “Every student has a rock that they are researching,” Hesser said. “In order to engage them more deeply, we want to create a book with our findings, publish it, and put it in libraries.” By placing the books in local libraries, Hesser said, students will have an audience for their writing while developing pride in their finished books. She hopes they can eventually become self-motivated readers and writers. “When students write a paper that ends up in a folder, the writing is not as engaging and authentic,” Hesser said. “When they are writing and sharing their work with others, they become true authors.” With the help of U.S. Cellular’s Calling All Teachers program, which funds different classroom projects, Hesser was able to get a book-binding machine and binding materials for the book. U.S. Cellular donated almost $600 for the project. “U.S. Cellular was a huge blessing to the class,” Hesser said. “We also received hardcover blank books and softcover blank books to use for our project.” Kaya Strohmayer, 11, said writing the book is a once-in-a-lifetime-experience. “We may not be able to make a book again,” Strohmayer said as she researched the geode rock. “This is a class coming together to make this big, good, creative book that no other class will be able to make.” Destiny Hodge, 11, agreed. “This is a good memory of doing

something as a class,” said Hodge, who is studying the arkesia rock. For their projects, students have to learn to write a topic sentence, come up with a main idea, and create supporting details. They also must cite sources used in research. Students also have to answer questions, such as how their rock is formed, what it’s made from, where it’s found, and how it’s used. “What goes in the book is what they research,” Hesser said. Johnson,10, said writing the book is fun, but it was hard at first. “We actually got the hang of it after we started it,” said Johnson, who is researching a diamond. “This is also fun because we have never had this experience.” If all goes well, the students’ book will be completed by Christmas. This is not the only book the students will create this school year. Other book topics the students have come up with include bullying and prevention, U.S. history, and books on how to write. “This is something we will remember when we are 26,” Johnson said.

Welcome Center finds new home Current lease ends Dec. 31, so operation heads to Peoria Ave. BY MATT MENCARINI

DIXON â€“ The cityâ€™s Welcome Center might be on the move. The tourism board, which operates the center, was told earlier this year that the lease on the current spot at 106 W. River St. would not be renewed, board member Ann Lewis told the City Council Monday night. â€œThis [new] location is very visible to the riverfront,â€? she said. â€œAnd, of course, with our plans in the future to expand the riverfront, it kind of puts it right in the middle of everything.â€? The board looked at several possible locations in Dixon but settled on 83 S.

Peoria Ave., just south of the bridge on the west side of the street, because the rent is less and the configuration allows for more space for exhibits, she said. With utilities, Lewis said, the tourism board was spending about $1,150 a month, $950 going for rent. The 3-year lease for the new location, which is owned by Randall Newcomer, sets the rent at $850 plus utilities. The lease will be on the City Councilâ€™s Dec. 15 agenda for a final vote. The Welcome Center must be out by the end of the month, so Newcomer will let the board move in before the lease officially starts on Jan. 1. It should be open by the first week in February, Lewis said. The mural also is moving: It will be installed on the north side of the new building, Lewis said. Itâ€™s part of the Lincoln Highway mural project and

commemorates a military convoy, led by Dwight D. Eisenhower, making a transcontinental trip on the highway in 1919 to test the highwayâ€™s ability to support military transportation. The new location is not only bigger, but itâ€™s one big room, which will allow for a more efficient layout than the current location. Lewis said. We started losing money, and so, since there was an adequate supply of home care, ... we decided it was time to close.” Short-term patients will still

be taken on a case-by-case basis for the next month or so. The program won’t officially come to a close until Jan. 30. “My home care is – I want to say – the best home care available,” Fiorini said. “I know everyone loves them. They do an excellent job. And those [nurses] are so professional and well-trained and educated. In some ways, it’s pretty painful. But is that enough reason to keep a program that is losing money?” All of the home care employ-

ees have found other jobs, or are going to transition into new positions with the health department once the home care program closes, Fiorini said. “I’d like people to know that we really appreciate all of the people that we’ve gotten to take care of,” she said. “It really is painful.” Patients who want a copy of their medical records should call the office at 815-772-4213 before Jan. 30.

ROCK FALLS – The city is moving ahead with a plan to bring broadband into its fold of utility offerings. A representative from Magellan Advisors, a technology services consulting firm the city has worked with for about a year, presented a strategic plan to the council Tuesday. The plan looked at various aspects of the project, including feasibility, market analysis, and business model options. Dick Simon, director of the city’s electric department, has been working closely with Denver-based Magellan on the plan to develop a broadband utility. Chilly weather screams for soup. This quick chicken soup with orzo is just all-around easy to make and comforting. Serve with some nice, crusty bread, perhaps a side salad, and dinner is served. With this recipe, all you need on hand is shredded leftover chicken, broth, some smallshaped pasta and just about any vegetable. You can use any broth, but opt for the low-sodium variety. The Free Press Test Kitchen’s broth favorite is the lowsodium variety of Better Than Bouillon chicken base. It has a terrific, rich flavor. And one jar makes about 38 cups of broth, so it’s cost-effective. Once opened, refrigerate the bouillon base, and use it by the expiration date on the lid.

Quick Chicken Soup with Orzo Makes: 12 cups Preparation time: 10 minutes Total time: 45 minutes This is the ultimate feel-good soup. Use any variety of broth, but we used chicken broth made with low-sodium Better Than Bouillon chicken base. It has a rich flavor and is ideal for this soup. 1 tablespoon olive oil ½ cup diced onion 2 ribs celery, thinly sliced 3 cups carrots, thinly sliced 8 cups fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth or homemade chicken stock

This quick chicken soup with orzo is exceedingly easy to make, and most comforting in chilly weather. 3 cups shredded cooked chicken breast 1 cup uncooked orzo or small pasta such as ditalini 2 cups frozen cut green beans or 1 cup frozen peas Sea salt and freshly ground

black pepper to taste ½ cup chopped fresh Italian parsley, optional In a medium soup pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions, celery and carrots. Stir until evenly coated

with oil. Cover, reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are soft; about 15 minutes. Watch carefully so the vegetables don’t burn. Add some water or broth if the pan gets too dry. Add the chicken broth and shredded chicken. Cook uncovered for 10 minutes over medium heat. Add the orzo, cover and cook about 6 minutes or until orzo is al dente. Add the green beans and cook for another 5 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
