SUBLETTE – John Kellen put a warm, wet cloth over his brothers’ eyes, blasted from their sockets, and held them to Bob’s cheeks. Rather than think about the pain or allow himself to get caught up in shock, Bob “Buck” Kellen thought about the faces. All the faces of all the people he’d

known. All the people he’d helped and saved through the years, for fear that he might never see them again. “The only thing I could think about, was I tried to remember what people’s faces looked like, all these people,” Bob said. “I knew I could recognize their voice, and I wanted to remember what they looked like.” Weeks later, he kept fighting fires. Son: Mom made family’s lifesaving legacy possible KELLEN

in his 15th year with the department and also is a deputy with the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. Jeff Blake, a former firefighter who today is the Amboy police chief, still tells stories about Kyle and Kole, 31, working the radio and jotting down notes before they were in junior high. “One of his favorite stories is that I’d be on the radio saying, ’Ten-fo, Twuck fo’,” Kyle said, “because I couldn’t pronounce my ‘Rs’ yet.” Both brothers say they literally counted down the days until they could join the department. “April 16, 2000,” Kyle said. “It’s a family thing. It’s in your blood, and you can’t get rid of it.” He remembers driving to his first fire in the brush truck with his uncle, Bill, who put in 41 years with the department. Kyle admits he was like a puppy, finally out of his kennel. “I know he could see my excitement, so he told me, ‘Settle down, and cool your roll,’” Kyle said. His dad was the chief for 10 years, and Kyle vividly remembers the only time his pops beat him down the stairs. In the dead of the night, a five-alarm tone went off. Spartan Tool in Mendota was engulfed. Being the chief, his dad knew he’d be in the truck for every fire, so he didn’t need to beat anyone to the rig. But with the biggest employer in the area on fire? “That was the first time my dad ever beat me down the steps and out

“It’s just business as usual,” he said while seated across from his mother, Velma, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. “Every bit of it came from her. She taught us what to do, and how to do it.” Still smart as a whip, Velma smiled and cracked, “And now I’ve got the eye trouble.”

‘It’s in the blood’ Between Buck, his father, three brothers, sister-in-law, grandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren, the family has put in nearly 300 years of service with the Sublette Fire Department. Unless you count the “apprentice years,” as we’ll refer to them. Velma was a member of numerous groups – from the Sublette Fire Belles to Modern Matrons. And in addition to feeding her army with her signature soups, she also cooked for funerals and other events at Our Lady of Perpetual Health in Sublette. So if the alarm went off while she was out volunteering, her husband, Gilbert, often would have to pile the boys into the car and bring them along for the call. Bob’s brother, Kevin, who now lives in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, can relate. When he responded to calls, his boys, Kyle and Kole, wouldn’t be far behind. “When they’d respond to a call, we’d get on our bikes and bike to the station,” said Kyle, 33, who’s

A Kellen wouldn’t dare back down. “You have a job to do,” Kyle said. “Whenever they talk about the Kellen side of firefighting, when you go to the neighboring departments, they see your last name and automatically give you more respect than others. They know how your uncle has fought fires, and how your dad fought fires. “When they see Kellen on the back of the jacket, they say, ‘God, it’s great to see you came up.’” For Kole, it was just great to see a pager during a 4-year stint with the Army that took him

all over the country, then to Germany for a year, to Iraq for 15 months, then back to Germany for another year. “Anytime I was on leave, I’d get a hold of Delbert [Stenzel] or someone and get a pager,” he said. “It was like being on vacation from the Army.” He commutes almost 2 hours round trip every day to Marseilles, where he works for the Army Corps of Engineers. His military service has come in handy numerous times, such as when searching for injured residents at Woodhaven Lakes in Sublette in the dead of the night after a tornado struck in June. “It takes a lot for me to get my adrenaline going anymore,” Kole said. “Not much will ever compare to being overseas.”

First among equals Math teacher cracks the formula to motivate students BY CHRISTOPHER HEIMERMAN

OREGON – Whether or not Danyel Larsen is funny is immaterial. Same goes for math, the subject she teaches at Oregon High School. Nonetheless, she was pretty doggone funny while going over how to graph sin and cosine waves during her seventh-period honors precalculus class Wednesday afternoon. “Why does ‘K’ stand for vertical shift, when ‘H’ is for horizontal shift?” Kelsey Handschuh asked. “Because it starts with a silent ‘K,’” Larsen said. “You know. Kuh-Vertical.” Then there was the debate over why Larsen kept drawing the unit circle over and over again on her transparency. “I can’t put it on the board,” she said. “I’d keep turning around. I’d get dizzy.” Put it on the back wall, a student suggested. “Then you’d all be turning around,” she countered. “Who do you want to be dizzy? Me or you? I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing.” A tattoo was suggested. “No tattoos,” she said, laughing, “no tattoos. How about I learn it, and tattoo it on my brain?” It was an overview of material the students already knew. The subject matter was boring, she said. But for the last period of the day, the environment was fun. From the moment she entered her second-floor classroom, Larsen was engaging students. Making sure her students know she cares is the key to being honored three times in the month of October alone. She was one of six teachers in the district to win a Those Who Excel award (the fourth straight year at least five Oregon teachers have earned the honor) from the state Board of Education. She was also one of five finalists in the state for the Presidential Award

So does Larsen. “We had a lot to talk about, and math helped me think about music in a more logical sense,” he said. “Usually I’m the dreamer who just goes off and does whatever he wants, but math has said, ‘Hey, these are some rules you have to follow.’” Zoe Nelson simply enjoys being eased into a class that involves complicated subject matter. She said that on Mondays, especially, they’ll take 5, sometimes 10 minutes catching up on what’s going on in their lives. During Wednesday’s seventh-period class, bad math puns caused waves of groans. The jokes all came from the students. Evidently, it’s a trickledown effect. “How many bad math jokes do I make? A lot,” Larsen said. “I’ve got bad transitions, too, and the kids like those.” “We’re only laughing at you, because you’re thinking that it’s funny,” Coots said. “That’s because they are funny,” she countered, deadpan.

Breaking the ice As a student in Honenegah, Larsen was quiet. “I didn’t say much at all,” she said. So she’s empathetic to reserved students, and tries to bring them into the fun. “I hope our humor, the atmosphere in here, brings them out of their shell,” she said. After high school, Larsen did her undergraduate work at the University of Illinois. She completed her masters in mathematics in 2012 at Northern Illinois Uni-

versity. Her husband of 10 years, Adam, is the school district’s assistant superintendent. They live in Byron, and Larsen has taught in the district for 9 years, after 3 years at Hiawatha High School in Kirkland. A key to students’ success, she said, is recognizing when a student isn’t fit for the class. “You can tell pretty quickly whether a kid is well-placed,” she said. “In the first couple of weeks of school, I can tell.” If students are overwhelmed by the material, or if it’s not challenging them, that’s when they tend to act out. At that point, she’ll work with the guidance counselor to get the student into the proper class. Think a student would feel demoralized to be relegated to a lower-level class? Think again. “It’s like a sense of relief,” Larsen said. “Nice kids can get put into honors, and it’s too hard for them.” That sort of empathy is what the school district is built on, Superintendent Tom Mahoney said. For 3 years, the district has been using a thirdparty screening service to determine whether applicants are more studentor teacher-centered. The district is looking for the former, and the screening helped when they recently had 300 applicants for three elementary teaching jobs. “It’s all about the human connection,” Mahoney said. “You can’t develop kids without developing relationships.” Larsen is visibly humbled by her recent honors. After all, it isn’t about her. “That’s just the culmination of 12 years of hard work to become a better teacher for my kids,” she said. “I think that there is just a culture of wanting to be the best we can for our students. We’re constantly pushing ourselves to be better.” Forget the awards. The best testimonial she can hear? “I often hear that kids don’t like math, but they like coming to my class.”

Crustless pumpkin pie for pastry rookies BY MARLENE PARRISH Tribune News Service

Fear strikes when some home cooks face even the thought of dealing with pumpkin pie. Google could not locate a word for â€œfear of making pie pastry,â€? although crust-o-phobia is a contender. How about pie anxiety? I have a fix for you. Donâ€™t make the crust. Do make any pumpkin pie filling, bake it in a dish and then add a crisp garnish. Hereâ€™s why: If you are not a pastry baker, now is not the time to take on that challenge. Pumpkin pie is notorious for having a soggy crust, usually because when the eggy filling is baked too long or at high temperature, it weeps liquid. Why chance it? The oven real estate is ruled by the roasting turkey. And, pie crust has lots of calories, maybe better spent on a second helping of stuffing. Hereâ€™s how: Get out a glass or metal pie pan. (No, not a flimsy metal foil one.) Make any pumpkin pie filling, pour into pan, bake. Or make individual pie pots. Do this the day before you want to serve and refrigerate. Hereâ€™s the crisp: Soft and creamy pumpkin filling (letâ€™s call it pudding) needs a crisp contrast. Up to 3 days ahead, make and bake a batch of granola. At presen-

Hereâ€™s the truth: That extra granola will taste terrific the next day for breakfast or sprinkled over ice cream or yogurt. The pumpkin pudding will be long gone.

No-Crust Pumpkin Custard Makes: About 6 to 8 servings 3 large eggs, at room temperature 15-ounce can pumpkin or 2 cups Â˝ cup brown sugar Âź cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon Â˝ teaspoon ginger Âź teaspoon nutmeg Pinch of cloves Â˝ teaspoon salt 1 cup whole milk (or Â˝ cup whole milk plus Â˝ cup heavy cream), at room temperature Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Have ready a 9-inch glass or metal pie plate or ceramic quiche dish. For single-servings, use eight 4-ounce ramekins or straight-sided mini-souffle dishes. Place dish(es) on a pizza pan or tray: that makes getting the filled containers to and from the oven easier.

Crustless pumpkin pie is served with a simple granola topping for crunch and whipped cream for glamour. In a large bowl, combine eggs, pumpkin and sugars. Mix well. Stir in spices, salt and milk; mix until well-combined. Pour pumpkin mixture into baking dish(es). Bake about 30 to 40 minutes, then begin testing for doneness by jiggling the dish.
