Weather permitting, Ridder said, the street will be open within a week – narrowly missing its Thanksgiving target date. Last week’s snow storm delayed the finishing touches. But once the street is open again, it will be able to convey the commercial truck traffic that has been rerouted under viaducts. Ridder was hired in mid-October, starting midway through the Seventh Street repair. It has been damaged since a June flash flood tore through the outdated culvert underneath the

And when they get stuck, it almost always comes down to failure to read. “I think [Dixon’s signage] is reasonable,” Ridder said. “We’ve followed

DIXON – It’s becoming a more frequent problem, city officials say. For years, semitractor-trailers have been getting stuck under viaducts in the southwest end of Dixon, all of which have posted height limits warning drivers. Over the past 2 months, the Third Street viaduct’s 12-foot height clearance has caught two semis in its grip. New Public Works Director Tim Ridder said “Pretty much all of the viaducts have been hit one way or another.” The problem was exacerbated this year, in part, because of the West Seventh Street construction that started in August. The hope is that once the street opens back up, the issue will lessen. But according to Tim Ridder, the problem’s

Ridder said the street will be ready to take on traffic next week, and requires only minor touch-ups – an asphalt finish and painting street lines – which the city will address in the spring. For him, though, the situation highlights a larger problem: Infrastructure in the southwest needs to be tackled. “It looks like the watershed has some issues that need to be addressed long-term,” he said. “Short-term, we had an infrastructure that failed. We need to put together a comprehensive watershed plan. There’s just more water that’s flowing there than has ever been there before.”

Gallery director steps down after 10 years; replacement sought ASAP

DIXON – After a decade at the helm, Bonnie Kime is stepping down as executive director of The Next Picture Show. Kime has cut her workload at the downtown gallery, and her full resignation takes effect at the end of January, said Sandy Schuler, the nonprofit fine art center’s board president. Volunteers have assumed more of her
responsibilities, and the board is looking to fill her position full-time as soon as possible. Kime has been part of most of the gallery’s 11-year history, overseeing operations, promoting the center and raising funds, and her successor will have the same responsibilities, Schuler said. Kime cited personal reasons for the departure, although she already had planned to retire in the near future, Schuler said. “She ended up having to [retire] sooner than anticipated,� Schuler said. Kime could not be reached for comment. The Next Picture Show hosts exhibits, special events, workshops and
classes on a yearly budget of about $125,000. The board is looking for someone with some managerial experience who is comfortable coordinating fundraisers. Other duties listed in the employment ad are handling finances, planning and development and public relations. “We’re looking for someone with an interest in art. They don’t really have to have an art background, per se,â€? Schuler said. “It’s more of an administrative and fundraising position. ‌ We’d love to get somebody in before Bonnie actually leaves.â€? Schuler would not say what the full-time, salaried position pays, but she said one of the “perksâ€? will be the flexible hours.
As far as a vision for the gallery, Schuler said board members are hoping to round out its art offerings and enhance classes. But the “biggest challenge� for the new director will be fundraising, so community outreach will be key, said Schuler. “It is a community fine arts center, and we’d like to expand on that,� she said. “If we can get some-

Historian pens second novel

FREEPORT – Drawing on his knowledge of Freeport, local historian Edward Finch has published his second novel, “Tumbling Blocks,� a series book featuring recurring character Gabby Gordon. The novel is set in Freeport and surrounding Stephenson County. Finch held a book signing on Nov. 7 at Higher Grounds in Freeport. Jack Carey was among those standing in line to get his book signed. He said he liked the first book and couldn’t wait for the second in the
series to be published. “What I like best about the first book [“Assassin Town�] was the local references, which really helped the story come alive,� Carey said. “I am a visual reader and when I read Ed’s first novel, it really kept things close to home. I am excited to open the pages of the next book.� Finch said the plot of “Tumbling Blocks� centers on a hidden vault that is revealed when a building collapses in the middle of the night. In the vault are hidden files from a defunct law practice, and from a lawyer who disappeared 30

this book, he makes reference to the Freeport Art Museum. “I am halfway through my next book in the series, which should be published by next spring,� Finch said. “That book is set in Stephenson County, and the reason I like to keep my books with local references is I think it adds to the attraction of Freeport. I have a reason to keep it local.� Reader Dave Roskam of Freeport said he came to get an autographed book from his friend. “Ed is a great guy and he writes intelligent books,� Roskam said. “I’m looking forward to opening the pages to this new read.� Finch will hold a reading at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 at

ROCK FALLS – Six months after construction began, the addition designed to hold the Whiteside County Health Department Community Health Clinic’s behavioral health department and more office space is nearly finished. Administrator Beth Fiorini hopes to begin moving into the new space Dec. 9. The new addition will alleviate cramped space in the main clinic, and allow it to offer more behavioral health services. “We are too crowded,” Fiorini said. “We have a psychiatrist who is in a room with another therapist because he doesn’t have an office of his own. The navigators for the Affordable Care Act will be moving into a real office.” The health department implemented a behavioral health integration program in January. In it, patients are evaluated at medical visits for depression, alcohol and drug abuse, and if needed, meet with clinical social workers to assess their readiness and willingness for treatment. “So many people are overdosing and dying,” Fiorini said. “Instead of
just a medical visit now, you will be screened if you come here for how much alcohol and drugs you use and how depressed you are. There is a push here and nationally to increase behavioral health.” Theresa Friel-Draper is the department’s chief operating officer. “The patients will be doing one-stop shopping,” she said. “Whether they are on the medical side or the behavioral side, they will have access to either of the providers at once. ROCK FALLS – A 47-year-old woman has died after suffering burns in a fire at her mobile home Tuesday on U.S. Route 30. Rock Falls firefighters responded at 8:30 p.m. to a mobile home at 1507 Route 30 West in EZ Living Trailer Park. An investigation revealed that the resident fell asleep while smoking, was rescued and taken to CGH Medical Center. From there, she was flown to University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin, where she died in the burn unit sometime Wednesday night or later, according to Rock
Falls Fire Capt. Dave Northcutt. Her name has not been released. Northcutt said the fire was under control minutes after firefighters reached the scene. Sterling Fire and Rock Falls Police also responded to the call. None of the departments, nor UW Hospitals or the Dane County medical examiner, were able to provide more details. It’s the second incident at the trailer park in less than a month. Three homes were damaged by fire Oct. 28, although no one was hurt. Two of the homes were vacant, and the residents of the third were assisted by American Red Cross.

SAVANNA – A 15-yearold West Carroll High School student has been arrested and referred to juvenile court in connection with a bomb threat at the school police say the student posted on Facebook. The Savanna Police Department said Wednesday the student was arrested Tuesday night. The student, who was not identified, faces felony charges of disorderly conduct and making a bomb threat of a school building. Police notified West Carroll Superintendent Craig Mathers on Nov. 20 that a bomb
threat to the school had been posted on Facebook from a fictitious account. Mathers said the school went into lockdown mode. All buildings were searched by staff and law enforcement, and canine units were used in two buildings. Nothing was found. “After much discussion with law enforcement, the decision was to stay in school and initiate [safety] procedures,” Mathers said. Students and staff were searched electronically Monday and all bags were checked, Mathers said. The Savanna Police Department said there might be more arrests.

You can buy a small sugar or pie pumpkin, cut it into slices, and then grill-roast this simple yet satisfying dish that will completely change how you think about pumpkin. ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil 3 large garlic cloves, sliced 1 small pumpkin, butternut or Hubbard squash (about 1½ pounds), stemmed, seeded and cut into 2-inch wedges (at the widest part) 20 black, dry-cured olives, pitted and halved 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme, or ½ teaspoon dried thyme Kosher or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Prepare a mediumhot fire in the grill. merica has been called a land of plenty, and this might be especially true when it comes to food. Although there is a small percentage of the population that does not get enough to eat, most of us have access to far too many cheap and easy calories. One of the sad side effects of an over-abundant supply is that we don’t worry much about wasted food. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, roughly one-third of the food produced worldwide for human consumption, about 1.3 billion tons per year, is lost or wasted. In industrialized countries like ours, more than 40 percent of food losses occur as a result of retailers and consumers discarding unwanted but often perfectly edible food. Throwing food away is a waste of not just the food itself, but it also wastes the resources (water, electricity, gasoline, etc.) that were used to produce it. Rotting food waste in landfills contributes to the production of methane gas that might be adversely affecting our environment. Composting is the most obvious method for dealing with food scraps, but there are other things you can do to minimize food waste in your house. Here are just a few: Meal planning: This is one of the most useful
olive oil mixture, and then season with salt and pepper. Place on the grill, close the lid and grill for 20 minutes. Open the lid and turn the pumpkin slices over. Close the lid and grill for 15 to 20 minutes longer or until the pumpkin is fork-tender. Transfer the pumpkin wedges to a platter and drizzle with the juices from the pan. things you can do to control your grocery spending and avoid waste. Inventory your fridge, cupboards, and freezer. Make it a challenge to use up ingredients that you already have. Allrecipes. com has a great feature that allows you to enter ingredients and search for recipes containing those ingredients. Snack on leftovers: Instead of buying packaged snacks, think of using leftovers for snacking purposes. A cup of leftover soup, vegetables, or casserole will probably be more filling, healthy, and inexpensive than something out of a box or bag. Freeze, please: If you have something in the refrigerator that is approaching its expiration date, consider freezing it. This might not work for everything but you would be surprised at the number of foods that can be frozen successfully. Save scraps: Keep a plastic bag in the freezer for scraps of onion, carrot, celery, etc. to use for making vegetable broths. Throw bread crusts into the food processor, turn them into crumbs and freeze for recipes. Eat the peel: There is a lot of nutrition in the peel of a potato, a carrot, or an apple. Once cooked, you might not even notice the difference. In addition to saving money and the planet, these practices might also benefit your health.
