County cash cast into vortex Whiteside County extends budget by 60K; another cold one forecast – just not that cold BY CHRISTI WARREN
STERLING – Last winter didn’t take a toll on just the minds and bodies of Sauk Valley residents. It also took a toll on their governments’ pocket books. At the Whiteside County Board meeting Tuesday night, members approved a resolution to extend the Highway Department’s budget by $60,000 because of the extra overtime pay, fuel, and equipment repair endured because of the weather, which was punctuated by
a polar vortex. Overtime, extra fuel, and equipment repairs, all attributable to the weather, amounted to $66,850 more than was budgeted, County Engineer Russ Renner said. But the cost of last winter actually was much more than that, simply because during normal winters, the highway department usually finishes out the year way under budget. Having to ask for a $60,000 extension is rare, Renner said. The Lee County Highway Department, too, was over budget, thanks

Students taught to show empathy, curb anger and impulses BY JERMAINE PIGEE
DIXON – Elementary students in the Dixon School District are learning more than reading, math and science in the classroom. They also have learned social skills and ways to manage their anger in a positive way. For the past 5 years, the school district has been implementing Second Step, a violence prevention curriculum that helps schools and families encourage children to get along well with others. “This program teaches students about anger management, empathy and impulse control,” said Pam Maas, a social worker at Washing-

ton Elementary School. “Students are also taught the skills for learning.” There was a parent meeting about Second Step on Thursday at the school. “What’s important is parents have a good understanding of what we are teaching their children, so they are connected with it and they can support it at home,” Maas said. “If the school and home are able to do similar things, it will help students a lot.” With empathy, students are able to identify and understand others’ feelings in order to be more caring people. The anger management component can help students recognize, understand and manage

anger in safe and constructive ways. Another key part of Second Step is impulse control, which teaches students to slow down and think through options when faced with difficult situations or problems. Asking and answering questions like, Do I need to calm down?, helps children recognize strong emotions and the need to be calm when trying to solve a problem. “This helps kids at the development level deal with other people,” said Michelle Spinden, a social worker at Madison Elementary School.

Letting it grow for good cause Officers take part in No-Shave November BY CHRISTI WARREN
STERLING – Police Chief Ron Potthoff wants the public to know that, if they get pulled over by a cop who’s looking a little scruffier than usual, not to worry – it’s for a good cause. Ten Sterling police officers are taking part in the department’s No-Shave November drive, with all proceeds benefiting April House, Whiteside County’s child advocacy center. No-Shave November is a national fundraising campaign in which people are asked to let it grow for a cause. Officers who wanted to participate in the department’s facialhair-grow-a-thon had to raise $30. The public also is welcome to donate, Potthoff
said. April House is a place where children who have been physically or sexually abused or neglected are interviewed about the things they have endured. Over the past year and a half, county employees and members of the public have been working tirelessly to keep it running. In July 2013, it faced almost-certain closure. After a story was published about its plight, the center received $31,545 in donations and volunteer help from members of Twin Cities Sunrise Rotary Club to renovate its new location. To donate, people may mail in or drop off checks at the Sterling Police Department, 212 Third Ave., with April House in the memo field.
Dixon cops working on fuzz, too Twenty-two members of the Dixon Police Department are participating in No-Shave November, so far raising $680 for the American Cancer Society and United Way of Lee County. Any officer participating must raise a minimum of $25. The public can donate to their cause by mailing in or dropping off checks at the department, 220 S. Hennepin Ave. Checks should be made out to Dixon Police Department, with a reference to No-Shave November
