STERLING – Keeping students on the forefront of technology has helped Sterling High School win recognition from one of the world’s top technological innovators. SHS is one of 300 schools worldwide to be named an Apple Distinguished School, for its 1-to-1 initiative rolled out last year that gives students 11-inch Apple MacBook Air laptops to use in school and at home. “They will come here [in the next few weeks] with a plaque and banner and they will also present to the school board,” Principal Jason Austin said. “We will also be featured on their educational website.” The school also will be hosting other districts looking to implement a 1-to-1 initiative. “We have agreed to host visits and show off the great things our students and staff are doing on a day-to-day basis,” Austin said. SHS was recommended for the award by Apple staff who have worked with the school, including Scott Meech, a K-12 development executive at Apple who made a site

doing the best in these five areas. “They are saying these 300 schools worldwide are doing this better than anyone else.” The high school might not be the only school in the district to get recognition from Apple. Challand Middle School students began using Apple iPad Air tablets this year, and like their older counterparts, can use the devices in school and at home. “They’d be eligible,” Everett said. “We are just starting out the 1-to-1 iPad initiative at Challand. They are still learning and growing.”

An idea takes root; a community benefits Festival of Trees has helped Hospice for more than a quarter-century More than 25 years ago, a group of volunteers’ charming idea became a reality when the Festival of Trees was conceived as a community event that would benefit Hospice of the Rock River Valley. Now, years later, we are thrilled to present the 26th annual Festival of Trees celebration at Northland Mall, 2900 E. Lincolnway, Sterling. Just as time, people and circumstances change, so too has the Festival of Trees. Along with a change in venue, visitors will see a modified – yet still wonderful – display of local talent and holiday items, in a condensed format. The festival includes a Festival Store, entertainment, Jim Behrens’ Design and Dessert Show, the Gala Evening and auctions, and a variety of holiday-decorated displays – trees, friendship trees, and table settings – none of which could be possible without the generosity of time, talent and treasure shared by businesses, organizations and people living in our communities. The Festival of Trees benefits patients and families of Hospice

of the Rock River Valley. Everyone is welcome to come watch decorators build this year’s Christmas forest on Nov. 15 and 16. Once the trees are in place, visitors can come throughout the week to bid on their favorite trees. Trees must be paid for at the close of the silent auction at 4 p.m. on Nov. 22. Buyers can have their tree delivered to their home or business on Nov. 24, just in time for Thanksgiving. Council opts for 10.09 percent tax rate hike Reserves will be used to ward off an even larger increase BY PAM EGGEMEIER

ROCK FALLS – Thanks to some unusual circumstances, the city’s aldermen had two choices in setting a new tax rate, and opted for the lesser of two evils. In a break from customary procedure, the City Council was presented with two tax levy recommendations, and after some spirited discussion Tuesday, voted 5-2 to approve a 10.09 percent increase rather than the other plan, which called for a 16.29 percent hike. Last year, the city’s levy brought a 4.99 percent tax rate increase. Based on a $71,000 home, the median price in Rock Falls, the new rate will bring an annual increase of $45.06 a year for property owners. The average homeowner would have paid

Finance Chairman Glen Kuhlemier said the changes in the way actuaries come up with city pension fund-

Equalized assessed valuations dropped by only $67,000. Blackert said in the past 5 years, the lowest EAV drop had been $1.2 million, while the biggest annual drop in home valuations was $4 million.

DIXON – The Dixon Public School District could have to spend more than $21 million over the next 5 years in order to meet building code. And almost $18 million of that would be spent at Dixon High School. On Wednesday, the school district’s architectural firm, Green Associates, went over the findings of the 10-year health life safety survey with the School Board. “If you are talking about a new high school and not doing anything with this building, all of this will be gone,” said George Reigle, principal with the firm. “If we go to the option where we

talk about renovating, all of these costs will be reflected. They will be included in the costs that you will see for that option.” Most of the issues raised in the survey violate the building code and must be corrected within 5 years. Some red flags in the districtwide survey include concrete sidewalks and asphalt parking lots that need repairing or replacing, concrete stairs that need updating, and ramps and stoops and water pipes that must be replaced. “This confirms the information that we have been looking at,” said Margo Empen, super-

If youâ€™re Ruth Reichl, whoâ€™d been the editor of Gourmet for more than a decade when the magazine ceased publication in 2009, you start cooking. â€œThis classic Szechuan dish struck me as a perfect way to start fresh,â€? she writes in the just-published â€œMy Kitchen Year: 136 Recipes That Saved My Life (Random House, $35) â€œBlistered with chiles, itâ€™s warrior food.â€? Like most Chinese dishes, Ma Po Tofu requires a bit of prep work. But once youâ€™ve got your ingredients lined up and ready, â€œit comes together in a fast flash of joyous heat,â€? says Reichl. Think tofu is too bland? The hot intensity of the peppercorns brings it to life in this

Former McDonaldâ€™s CEO joins board of Beyond Meat NEW YORK (AP) â€“ Former McDonaldâ€™s CEO Don Thompson is flipping a new type of burger â€“ one made without meat. Beyond Meat, a California startup that wants to replace beef and chicken with its vegan alternatives, says the longtime McDonaldâ€™s executive has joined its board. The company is part of a wave of startups that say they want to recreate foods like eggs and meat with plant-based ingredients,

which they say are gentler on the environment. Thompsonâ€™s teaming up with Beyond Meat comes after he stepped down as head of McDonaldâ€™s Corp. in March after nearly 25 years with the company. The departure came as the worldâ€™s biggest burger chain struggled with sagging sales and declining customer visits and sought to shake up its business. As part of the separation with McDonaldâ€™s, Thompson agreed to extend his non-compete

agreement to 2 years, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The agreement also said McDonaldâ€™s would pay Thompson $3 million for a year of his consulting services. The work with Beyond Meat doesnâ€™t interfere with Thompsonâ€™s agreement with McDonaldâ€™s, a McDonaldâ€™s representative said. Beyond Meat said Thompson, 52, was not available for an interview.

â€œWe look forward to working with Don to bring our plant-based meats to consumers here in the United States and abroad,â€? Beyond Meat founder and CEO Ethan Brown said in a statement. Beyond Meat, based in El Segundo, California, also appointed board member Seth Goldman as executive chairman. Goldman, 50, is the cofounder and CEO of Honest Tea, which is owned by Coca-Cola Co.
