ROCK FALLS – A tinge of pre-dawn reds and oranges swept the sky Thursday, painting the group of motorcycles gathered outside Long Shot Bar and Grill. Inside, a group of motorcycle riders, state and regional police, and Long Shot employees listened to last-minute preparations for a trek to deliver nearly $28,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The group of 18 riders and 11 passengers took part in St. Jude Rides, a 3-day, 530-mile motorcycle ride to Memphis, Tennessee. At least two police escorts joined the ride, which ended Saturday.
All money raised will go to the hospital, which treats patients 21 and younger free of charge. Based in Memphis, St. Jude has clinics in seven other locations nationwide, including Peoria. Riders were asked to raise at least $1,000, while passengers were asked to raise at least $500. Gary Fulrath, one of the local organizers, said $27,600 in local funds will be given to St. Jude. The national ride was founded 10 years ago. The local group took part for the first time last year, and featured three motorcycles with five people – riders and passengers – who raised $3,750. Nationwide, $623,750 was raised in 2015. “I’d like to double our numbers for next year, to 35 [or] 40,� Fulrath said. “When we come in there with 200 to 300 motorcycles, the kids are so excited.� The local riders will meet up with others from across the country before arriving in Memphis. A number of riders spoke about why they were participating. Ralph Petersen, 74, from Lost Lake, said his wife spent some time 60 years ago at LaRabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Ruth Petersen can no longer ride, but Ralph can. “We have grandkids
down in Memphis,� Petersen said before getting on his 2012 Harley-Davidson Trike motorcycle. Jim and Michelle Grunauer, 57 and 56, respectively, both of Sterling, took their 2011 Harley CVO Roadglide Ultra for the trip. “We both love riding, and we want to give back to the kids,� Michelle said. Dawn Nielsen 47, of Rock Falls, is a secondyear rider. She traveled with her husband, Tom, 46, on their 2011 Limited Harley-Davidson. “Tom Root, the chief of police in Princeton, was telling me about [the ride],� Dawn said. “We’re riding for Jada Goodman, a cancer patient from Rock Falls, and in memory of my grandmother, ‘Granny’ Lorraine Fullgraf. She wanted some of her money to go to St. Jude. There are some local kids who go to St. Jude. It feels so nice to give back.� As the sky started to turn more blue, the riders and their police escorts posed for a few last-minute photos. Then, engines roared. The group headed out, accompanied by a Rock Falls Police SUV, an Illinois State Police motorcycle, and a Peoria County Sheriff’s vehicle, lights flashing as they headed east.

COURT DEDICATED TO LATE KREIDER CLIENT, THANKS TO COMMUNITY’S GENEROSITY

DIXON – As Kreider Services clients walked toward their brand-new basketball court Thursday morning, they stopped short of admiring it for just a moment. “Sorry about your son,” several of them said as they embraced Ralph Tompkins. Then the dedication of James’ Court got underway. May 23, 2015, Ralph and his wife, Kathy, lost their athletic social butterfly, James, at the age of 37. Because of how much the late Kreider client inspired his friends, and because of the generosity of his parents and the community, James’ buddies are eager to use that court to hopefully get as good as he was. “I love it,” Ziemke said. “I really miss him. We were friends, and he was hilarious. Hilarious.” Kreider CEO Jeff Stauter can attest to that. When James’ beloved Northern Illinois University Huskies football team upset Stauter’s Iowa Hawkeyes back in 2013, Monday couldn’t come fast enough for James. “He would kid Jeff all the time, so when he got back to work Monday, I’m sure he laid it on pretty thick,” Ralph said. “He wouldn’t let me hear the end of it,” Stauter said as he kicked off the dedication. The Tompkinses live in DeKalb, but James was a client at Kreider for more than 15 years. Ralph had been looking for James’ jersey all week, and Kreider activities coordinator Lisa Olson finally showed him where it’s been. His number 22 was retired Thursday morning, adorned with Special Olympics medals in a shadow box. Somehow, Ralph kept the waterworks under control as he thanked Kreider and the community for their contributions. “James had a wonderful life, thanks to all of you,” he said. “He did very well,” Kathy said afterward of Ralph. “I didn’t know if I could get through it,” Ralph said. He admitted he didn’t hold it together quite as well when Hal Huffman showed him the sleek, classy plaque he’d designed, complete with 37 golden dashes around the golden basketball at the top. “He told me to count them out, and I cried,” he said. Olson presented him and Steve Bieser with golden whistles, so they can officiate the client-employee game Oct. 15. Ralph coached the team for about 10 years until James passed, and Bieser has long reffed Kreider games. The court cost about $11,000, and the Tompkinses picked up half of the tab. The other half came from funds raised through Kreider’s Meaningful Day Program. All money raised at an annual golf outing and an annual gala go toward making someone’s day more meaningful. Mission accomplished. After the ceremony, the cli-

Bob Trader buried a 16-footer and beamed. “I like it,” Robert said. “I’m a great player. I’m the big guy. I hope this can help us get to state this year.” Ralph hopes so, too. Like the clients and Kreider staff, he misses talking sports with James. Misses going to games. Misses that passion that ignited so long ago. “When he was just little – a couple years old – he used to sit on the couch, and we had a little kids basketball hoop,” he said. “He’d throw the basketball, and I’d rebound it and throw it back to him. He was into sports ever since.” Now he has a legacy: a court that will help Kreider clients not only sharpen their hoops skills, but serve as a court for dodgeball and myriad other activities. “I’m so happy James’ dad did this for us,” Ziemke said. “Jim had such good friends in Kreider – very, very close friends,” Ralph said, tearing up. “For Jim to be able to provide this for them is pretty amazing. Look at the appreciation. Look what’s going on out there. “This is perfect.”

Eyes are on the Galena Street Bridge in Mount Carroll because of its age and condition. Engineers are reporting each month to city personnel on whether the 115-yearold bridge can be kept open, or if structural damage will mandate a closure. BY PHILLIP HARTMAN
MOUNT CARROLL – A 115-year-old bridge across the Wakarusa River is under monthly watch for signs of further deterioration. The Galena Street Bridge on the city’s northwest edge has rust damage to steel trusses, and wooden planks on its sides contracted after being installed while wet. It’s unsafe for any vehicle heavier than 5 tons to cross. “No larger vehicles are allowed to cross it,” City Clerk Julie Cuckler said. “The garbage truck isn’t allowed to cross it. Emergency vehicles should stay off of it. The worst part is what’s corroding on each of the ends.” State Department of Transportation staff said inspectors from Willett, Hofmann & Associates are checking on the bridge, and city staff are receiving monthly updates on its status. Keeping tabs cost $795 for May,
Cuckler said. “It changes from month to month, because in the one [charge] from July 1 to July 30, they incorporated one of the other bridges,” Cuckler said. At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Rick Russell, who lives near the bridge, complained about the noise made when vehicles cross it. “Every morning at 5 o’clock, I’m awake, because a car goes across it and all those beams go ‘BRMMM.’ You can be in a car and go over it and hear the bolts go ‘ching-chingching,’” Russell said. Russell has been monitoring the inspectors as they monitor the bridge. “I’ve heard we have people coming in to inspect the bridge every month, and that it was kind of high on paying them,” Russell said. “The metal trusses underneath are rusting out,” Alderman Kevin Powers said.
“What the (Willett, Hoffman) guys that are coming and doing is seeing if, at any point, it has to be closed. We can have them look at the bridge monthly, or have them shut it off entirely.” Mayor Carl Bates asked if Eric Dauphin, the street department superintendent, could look at the bridge. Dauphin will report on progress at the Sept. 27 meeting. In 2013, the council was told the bridge will be eligible in fiscal year 2018 for $1,408,000 in Illinois Major Bridge program funding. The replacement project is estimated to be $1.8 million, with the remaining balance split between the city and Carroll County. “They’ve put us off to as far as 2018 at one point,” Cuckler said. “We’re hearing some different things on that. One idea is to keep the old bridge as a walking bridge of some sort.”

Better your blueberry cake with zucchini BY GRETCHEN MCKAY Tribune News Service
Here’s the thing about cake. It can help make or break a celebration. I say that because earlier this month I threw a bridal shower for my soon-to-be daughterin-law, and of course I wanted to make the best impression. Special occasions require equally special desserts. But because I was doing all the cooking, I wanted to serve a cake that was relatively easy, and at the same time be as beautiful as the woman who captured my son’s heart. I found a winner in this luscious two-layer cake developed by Amanda Rettke, author of “Surprise-Inside Cakes: Amazing Cakes For Every Occasion with Something Extra Inside” (Morrow, 2014), and the blogger behind iambaker.net. Studded with sweet blueberries and redolent of vanilla and lemon, it was as gorgeous as it was delicious – both before and after I sliced it. But the best part was the surprise inside that made it the ultimate summer cake: zucchini. Bakers often use applesauce to moisten cakes, but summer squash, too, can make a cake taste decadently rich, thanks to its high
water content. And it does so without adding a discernible taste or texture (no one will ever guess it’s in there unless you tell), while also adding fiber, potassium and a blast of Vitamin C. Rettke recommends eating the cake while it’s still warm, “and the zucchini bits are lounging around the bursting blueberries in a delightful way.” But you can take heart in knowing that it’s just as scrumptious at room temperature as it is cold out of the refrigerator. Maybe you, too, are planning some sort of get-together to mark the end of summer – a backyard bash, perhaps, or a wheels-up party to celebrate the kids going back to college. This easy cake, the layers of which can be made a day ahead and then frosted the day of, would be a perfect addition to the party table. Some tips: You’ll want to squeeze the shredded zucchini in a dish towel until most of the water comes out before adding it to the batter, and no, you don’t have to peel it first. Also, let the cake cool completely before frosting the layers, or you’ll end up with a gloppy mess. Depending on how much you love icing,

Blueberry Zucchini Cake with Lemon Buttercream Serves: 12 The recipe calls for using 8-inch pans, but it would work just as well in 9-inch pans. Be sure to let the cake cool completely before frosting. For cake 2 cups finely shredded and drained zucchini 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup vegetable oil 3 teaspoons vanilla
extract 2¼ cups white sugar 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda 1 pint fresh blueberries (reserve a few for garnish) For lemon buttercream 1 cup butter, room temperature 3½ cups powdered sugar 1⁄8 teaspoon salt 1 lemon, juice and zest of (about 2 tablespoons) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease two 8-inch round cake pans. Grate a large zucchini (or two small zucchini) and place in a clean dish towel. Squeeze until most of the liquid comes out. You will want to have 2 total cups of shredded zucchini after it has been drained. Set aside. In a large bowl and using a hand mixer, beat together eggs, oil, vanilla and sugar. Fold in the zucchini. Slowly add in flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Gently fold in the blueberries. Divide batter evenly between prepared cake pans. Bake 35 to 40 min-
utes in preheated oven, or until a knife inserted in the center of a cake comes out clean. (My layers took about 45 minutes.) Cool 20 minutes in pans, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely. For lemon buttercream: Combine butter, sugar and salt and beat until well combined. Add lemon juice and vanilla and continue to beat for another 3 to 5 minutes or until creamy. Fold in most of the lemon zest. Frost between layers and on top and sides of cake.
