Road to recognition Petition drive aims to get road designated a national monument BY ADAM POULISSE
DeKALB – John O’Halloran got his kicks on the Lincoln Highway 2 years ago. He left his Twombly Road home with his partner, Robert Reinhold, and drove a 1948 Hudson to San Francisco along the first hard-surfaced improved transcontinental highway. “It’s a lovely, not-heavily traveled road because most motorists take the interstate,” said O’Halloran, who also is a member of the Franklin Grove-based Lincoln Highway Association. “It epitomizes the beauty of America. You’re not pressed by the high speeds. Everybody on the interstate wants to drive 80 mph.” But for all its history, Lincoln Highway is still not recognized by the federal government as a national monument. Residents near and far are looking to give the 3,389-mile coast-to-coast highway that cuts through more than 700 big cities and small villages the recognition they say it deserves. Because it originally was called the Lincoln Memorial Highway, and it’s older than the 93-yearold Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., recognizing the highway as a national monument is the best option, said Kay Shelton of DeKalb, national president of the Lincoln
Highway Association. “It’s a low-cost way of recognizing it as a tourist destination,” Shelton said. “It’s the road itself, so the mapping is already done. But getting it recognized means the federal government considers that, yes, this is a historical road meant to recognize Abraham Lincoln. That has infinite[ly stronger] pull to let the American people know this is an important road.” A change.org petition urging President Barack Obama to recognize the Lincoln Highway as a national monument has 350 of its 500-signature goal, but it still needs “thousands” more before becoming a national monument, Shelton said. “We think the road’s wonderful, but it says a lot more if the federal government says ‘Yes, this is an important road to American history’,” she said. Lincoln Highway has a storied history aside from its honest namesake – former President Dwight Eisenhower had some involvement, too. As a young lieutenant colonel in America’s first Transcontinental Army convoy in 1919, Eisenhower and his crew encountered muddy terrain and bridges that couldn’t accommodate the convoy, Shelton said. Memories of that trip, plus his experience on the German Autobahn,
spurred Eisenhower to sign the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, which allowed $25 billion to construct the 41,000-mile Interstate Highway System. The Illinois Highway Coalition’s website, drivelincolnhighway.com, provides a statewide point of view of the throughway. Also known as state Route 38, the highway is a main artery for downtown DeKalb. A portion of it is closed for the annual Corn Fest, and it’s a busy street during Northern Illinois University’s move-in day. “DeKalb was the first to rename one of its roads the Lincoln Highway,” Shelton said. “If you go from one part of the county to another, right down the middle is Lincoln Highway, and it connects the rural areas west of here.” A PBS documentary, “A Ride Along Lincoln Highway,” plays overseas and on international flights, and has caused the roadway to receive wider attention. “We have people who come from all over the world, and I literally mean all over the world,” Asp said. “Mongolia, Australia, South America, Africa ... .” These days, you can still drive on most of the original Lincoln Highway, although some alterations were made through the years, including rerouting it around Dugway
Proving Ground in Utah, and removing a hairpin turn at the Iowa-Illinois border. In Wyoming, Utah and California, sections of I-80 are paved directly over parts of the original highway. Driving the highway is what Lucianne Boardman of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, plans to do. Beginning Monday, she will fly to San Francisco and meet up with her two sisters – one also lives in Wisconsin, another lives in Alaska – and drive the full Lincoln Highway to the East Coast. They will be doing it to honor their great-great aunt Anita King, a silent film star who, in 1915, became the first female to drive solo the Lincoln Highway from one coast to another. She started her journey in San Francisco, just like her great-great nieces will. If they stick to their itinerary, they should be in DeKalb on Sept. 11, Boardman said. “One problem with it is it’s different roads,” she said. “It’s just not one highway.” Along the way, the sisters will be asking people to sign the petition to change the highway into a national monument.

SCHAUMBURG (AP) – The dental difficulties of a Schaumburg teenager with autism have led to a change in Illinois law. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation that requires insurance policies to cover sedation for otherwise routine dental work for children diagnosed with autism and developmental disabilities. The idea came from Mike Baker of Schaumburg after his son, Bryan, had a tough time at the dentist last year. During otherwise routine dental work, Bryan, who has been diagnosed with autism, had to be sedated because he had trouble communicating with the dentist.
Baker’s bill for the visit was large because many plans cover sedation for patients up only to age 6. So Baker asked local lawmakers to address the issue. State Rep. Laura Fine, a Glenview Democrat, took it up. With Rauner’s signature, new plans will cover dental sedation for autistic patients until age 19. The law takes effect Jan. 1. “I hope it affects a lot of people,” Baker said. Rauner’s signature didn’t come with an official message, but Baker said in May he was thankful lawmakers and advocates decided to take up the idea. “Everyone talked about obstacles,” Baker said. “But I said, ‘The heck with it.’”

DIXON – Local officials are rejoicing after the House voted to overrule Gov. Bruce Rauner’s controversial amendatory veto of a bill that would ensure Medicaid covers treatment for heroin addicts. On Wednesday, state representatives overwhelmingly voted to override the governor’s changes that would have axed the Medicaid component. The vote was 105-5. One of the people who voted in favor of the override was Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon. When reached for comment following the governor’s amendatory veto last week, Demmer was uncertain as to what his vote would be. His decision today clearly shows he had a change of heart. “I had a number of productive conversations with people from the district who have worked on this,” he said. “We talked about risks that we face – our community – with the increased use of heroin, and weighed that against what we thought the potential cost might be. I decided to vote to override in this case because I thought that was a crisis that we need to respond to early on before it spirals out of control, and I thought the bill was a comprehensive and fair way to do that.” The bill will now go to the Senate where state Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, isn’t sure just yet how he’ll vote. For him, as with the Republican governor, it’s a matter of cost. “I’m going to wait to hear some more debate,” Bivins said. “My big concern is – and I actually think it’s not a bad bill — I think there are some good things in there. My concern is, how are we going to pay for it? If I can be convinced that the money is there, then I wouldn’t have any problem voting for [the override].” Lee County Sheriff John Simonton, Dixon Police Chief Danny Langloss, and Lee County Health Department Administrator Cathy Ferguson, for their parts, are thrilled with the House’s decision in favor of an

override, citing figures that put the cost of treatment at at least half of what incarceration for nonviolent drug offenders costs the state. “Once you start putting the figures together, and what it was going to cost to put these folks in prison or jail, for that matter, versus the treatment costs ... we as taxpayers are going to have to pay it anyway,” Simonton said. “So if we pay less of that burden for treatment, hopefully they’ll come out without that addiction. ... It’s cost effective.” Langloss met with Demmer on Wednesday after being made aware of Rauner’s amendatory veto. The two talked about the Lee County’s new Safe Passage program, which allows opiate addicts to come to the police station, surrender any drugs or paraphernalia
they may still have, and be immediately placed in a treatment facility. The program, though it technically began Tuesday, has already placed seven addicts in treatment. “Tom’s always been so responsive to our needs,” Langloss said. “He saw and realized the importance of this, and with his health care background, he has a unique insight. He totally understands that these people are going to either end up in treatment, or jail, and our emergency rooms. And if they end up [in jail or our emergency rooms], it’s going to cost us four times what it would cost us to put them in treatment.” “We’re very happy with this,” Ferguson said. “We just hope that the Senate follows suit.”

MOUNT MORRIS – A man who lives next door to the former Quad Graphics plant wants the village board to do something about the nearempty structure. In fact, Chris Corcoran has put up a sign to that effect in his front yard at 202 Sunset Lane, just west of the plant. “Old printing plant is an eyesore to neighborhood. Village board needs to act on it,” reads the hot pink lettering on the 4-by8-foot sign. Corcoran has addressed the board several times to voice his concern that the nearly abandoned plant is deteriorating and poses safety and environmental hazards, violates building codes and weed ordinances, exposes residents to a liability, and reduces property values in the community. He reiterated his concerns Tuesday, citing a large hole in one wall that has pipes hanging down and weeds growing on the property. “I want that section all cleaned up,” Corcoran said. “And I want the weeds cut. They need to respect the neighborhood. The rest of the neighbors keep their properties up.” Youngsters riding their bikes into the property is among Corcoran’s main concerns. “There’s [rebar] sticking up back there, and I’m afraid one of those kids will get impaled on it,” he said. “Someone is going to get killed back there.” A tall chain link fence surrounds the property, but until recently the gate was left open. It’s

now closed and locked. Corcoran is less than impressed. “Those kids are going to climb the fence and get in there anyway,” he said. He is also worried that wildlife, such as raccoons, will take up residence in the empty plant and become a nuisance. Quad Graphics ceased operations May 13, 2011, ending 113 years as a printing facility. It now leases the plant as a warehouse to store equipment. Village President Dan Elsasser said Tuesday that the issue would be on the Sept. 8 agenda, but the village is not involved in the plant’s ownership in any way. Corcoran’s concerns are not being ignored, though, he added. Elsasser said he had been in contact with facility manager Jeff Warren, one of two Quad Graphics employees still at the plant, as well as the plant’s owners. “The village has ordinances for maintenance, upkeep, and safety issues,” he said. “We can notify owners when they are in violation of an ordinance, but it’s still up to the owner to take care of it.” In some cases, the village has cleaned up vacant properties then billed the responsible party, he said.

Geneva car dealer buys Sterling Chevrolet dealership BY PAM EGGEMEIER
STERLING – A third-generation car dealer from Geneva is the new owner of Sterling Chevrolet. Lee Schreiber, 36, finalized the acquisition of the dealership at 1824 N. Locust St. Tuesday from Jason Hachmeister and Rick Steenbock, who bought the dealership in 2007. Lee’s father, John Schreiber Jr., was a Ford dealer for a quarter-century, at Oakfield Ford in Villa Park and Bull Valley Ford in Woodstock. Lee’s grandfather, John Sr., was the general manager at Zimmerman Ford in St. Charles for 35 years. John Jr. died in 2012, and Lee’s uncle bought that dealership. “I’ve grown up in dealerships – I started as a porter cleaning cars when I was a kid,” Schreiber said. Schreiber didn’t come to Sterling alone. The man he calls his “righthand man,” Kevin May, is his general sales manager. May, 52, of Schaumburg, has also been in the business most of his life. “I worked for my dad in Villa Park, and started washing cars back in 1973,” May said. May was with Schreiber in Villa Park for several years. He last worked at Freeway Ford in Lyons, which has the distinction of being the only dealership in Illinois that exclusively sells Ford trucks. Schreiber said he searched for buying opportunities for about 18 months before the Sterling business caught his eye. He said he liked the fact it was a relatively turnkey dealership, and it had a history of community involvement. “I started the process with Rick and Jason in March, and it seemed like everybody in town knows Sterling Chevrolet, and has good things to say about it,” Schreiber said. “It’s a great opportunity in a great community.” Both Schreiber and May have a Ford pedigree, but they plan to put some of that brand’s formula

for success in place at the Chevy lot. “We will put a great deal of emphasis on pickup trucks,” Schreiber said. “We want to be the number one Chevy truck dealer in northwest Illinois.” Schreiber and wife, Erin, have three children, Olivia, 6, Vivian, 4, and 9-month-old Duke. The fam-
ily will stay in Geneva, but Lee said he plans to find a place in the area. “My family has deep roots in the Geneva area, but this is my only job, and I plan to be here every day and be involved in the community,” Schreiber said. Schreiber said he has no plan in place to cut staff, and if all goes according to plan, he would like to add to the 50-person workforce. “We want to keep as many employees here as possible,” Schreiber said. “My plan is for growth, and that means the staff would grow in accordance.” The dealership plans to keep the well-known Sterling Chevrolet badge as part of its marketing repertoire, but an updated logo will soon be unveiled.

Summer’s last hurrah: Let late seasonal produce be star on dinner table BY ARTHI SUBRAMANIAM Tribune News Service
Signs that summer is wrapping up have arrived. Kids have started going back to school; NFL preseason games are underway; night temperatures are dropping; and prices of strawberries and blueberries have hit $4 and change. Soon, yellow squash and zucchini will be giving way to their cool-weather cousins, such as butternut and spaghetti, and apples will rule the fruit shelves. But before that happens, celebrate the last weeks of summer with one last hurrah, using produce that best defines the season. Toss ripe nectarines and grapes with cucumbers and carrots. Then drizzle the salad with lemon juice and speckle it with cilantro for a no-frills, colorful and delicious mixed summer salad. As an alternate option, substitute necatrines with plums. For a burst of vibrant flavors, prepare a mango-peach salsa that is spicy, tangy and sweet in equal measure by mixing chopped peaches, mangoes, yellow peppers, tomatoes, jalapeno, onion and lime juice. Finally,
sprinkle some cilantro to give the dip an earthy flavor. You cannot let the season slip away without checking out baked tomatoes stuffed with beans and carrots mixed with a bechamel sauce, and topped with panko crumbs and a dab of butter. The stuffed tomatoes are a model of simplicity and pure, and are summer on a plate. If your garden has gone a little zucchini crazy and has yielded more than you need for bread or fritters, make zucchini scones with the squash. With the addition of grated zucchini and Parmesan cheese, the classic English scone gets a savory makeover.
Mango-Peach Salsa Makes: 12 servings 1½ cups tomatoes, chopped 3 ⠄4 cup pitted, diced peaches ½ cup red onion, diced ½ cup yellow pepper, diced ½ cup mango, peeled and diced 2 tablespoons jalapeno, finely diced 1½ teaspoons lemon juice ½ teaspoon cilantro, minced
Kosher salt Tortilla chips for serving In a large bowl, combine tomatoes, peaches, onion, yellow pepper, mango, jalapeno, lemon juice and cilantro. Stir gently. Add salt to taste. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. Serve with tortilla chips. – Adapted from “Peaches� by Kelly Alexander
Zucchini Scones Makes: 12 scones 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup butter 2 eggs, slightly beaten 3/4 cup whipping cream 1 cup shredded zucchini, water squeezed 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, stir together flour, baking powder and salt. Using pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture; set aside. In a medium bowl, stir together eggs and whipping cream. Add to flour mixture. Squeeze water from zucchini and add to flour mixture.
Then add cheese. Stir just until moistened. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and knead until dough is nearly smooth. Divide dough into half. Pat half of the dough into a 6-inch circle. Serves: 4 1 cup ripe nectarines, diced 1 cup grapes, sliced 1 cup cucumbers, diced 1 cup carrots, diced 1/4 cup sweet onion 1 teaspoon cilantro, finely minced 2 tablespoons lemon juice Salt to taste In a large bowl, gently combine nectarines, grapes, cucumbers, carrots, onion, cilantro and lemon juice.
