BorgWarner to add 40 jobs $9.4 million investment in plant to happen over 3 years BY MATT MENCARINI
DIXON – BorgWarner will invest $9.4 million in its Dixon plant over the next 3 years and add 40 jobs, according to a company news release. The Auburn Hills, Michigan-based company, which makes components and systems for powertrains for passenger cars and onand off-road commercial diesel vehicles, made the announcement Thursday morning. Expanded production capacity will focus on environmentally friendly technologies to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy for passenger cars and commercial vehi-
cles, the company said. The plant, which has been in Dixon for 50 years, has a workforce of 210. The new jobs are expected to be for manufacturing and product engineering, supplier quality, supply chain, and technical and quality support, the release said. Paddy Lange, the Dixon plant manager, said in the release that the city’s infrastructure was a key to the investment. Mayor Jim Burke said he hadn’t been talking with BorgWarner about the investment or new jobs, but the company has been doing well and expanding. “That is wonderful, and it says a lot about the work ethic of the local people,�
Burke said “A lot of those employees have been working there for decades.� The “ripple� of the new jobs, which will be seen in the form of more people with jobs spending money locally, will be big for the city, the mayor said. Bob White, the company’s human resources manager, confirmed that the company will receive incentives from the state for the investment and new jobs, but didn’t have specifics as of Thursday. White said the $9.4 million investment will be used to support the technology and equipment needed for production and expansion into to commercial diesel automotive markets.

Geologists studying Mount Baldy find another hole in dunes

(AP) – Scientists are still confounded 13 months after a then-6-year-old boy was nearly buried alive in a popular sand dune in northwest Indiana. They say they found a sixth hole this week as they moved high tech gear into place to try to conduct further testing on what is causing the holes. Indiana University Northwest associate geology professor Erin Argyilan was at Mount Baldy conducting a wind study on July 12, 2013, when Nathan Woessner of Sterling became trapped more than 3 hours. Rescuers moved about 400 tons of sand before freeing Woessner, who was buried 11 feet down. Three geologists who are the principle investigators arrived Monday and hope to use radio waves and core samples they collect in the next week to amass enough data to eventually build a three-dimensional map of a section of the 126-foot-high Mount Baldy and see if they can determine what is causing the holes.
Bruce Rowe, spokesman for the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, said Mount Baldy will remain closed until more is known. “We want to let the science do the talking before we do any management decisions as to whether to open Mount Baldy,� Rowe said. “We have a great desire to reopen it. It’s one of the most popular areas in the lakeshore. But we want to make sure we understand what’s going on from a geological standpoint so we can make the proper decisions.� The geologists say what they are finding out is changing what they thought they knew about the properties of sand dunes. “It’s disturbing, because everything I knew about dunes led me to confusion,� Argyilan said. “There’s no way that something like this should have happened. I’ve never read or heard about voids in dunes.� One of the working theories is that the holes might be related to decaying trees or rotting manmade structures that the

But she said they have heard about smaller holes being reported at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in far western Oregon and officials there say they are from decaying trees. Todd Thompson, assistant director of the Indiana Geological Survey,
said that didn’t make sense to him at first. “Because where does the tree go? If it’s buried inside this dune and it rots, isn’t there still a mass there? It’s got to go somewhere,� he said. Argyilan is using data compiled last year by crews using groundpenetrating radar to check out anomalies in the dune to see if trees or structures are to blame.
The latest hole, about 7 inches wide and about 4½ feet deep, was discovered Wednesday in a spot where Thompson had previously stepped while moving equipment. “I didn’t notice it,â€? Thompson said. “I just continued to walk on, and it probably collapsed out after I went by.â€? Most of the holes have been smaller. Argyilan estimates most of the
holes have been about 2 inches wide. She said the hole found Wednesday was the deepest they’ve found. The previous deepest was about 3 feet deep. The holes are difficult to measure, though, because by the time scientists return to measure them they have begun to fill with sand, Argyilan said. Thompson said the $90,000 study, funded by the National Park Service grant, calls for an initial report in three months, a preliminary report in six months and a final report in a year. It’s too early to say whether there is any way to fix the problem, he said.

ASHTON – A Franklin Grove father and son were injured, the father critically, in a two-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon at state Route 38 and Grange Road, midway between Ashton and Rochelle in Ogle County. According to a news release Thursday from
the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department, and to information from one of the drivers involved: Thomas Ball, 63, of Franklin Grove, was westbound on Route 38 around 2:45 p.m. when he failed to see a vehicle waiting to make a left turn onto Grange. He lost control of his vehicle trying to avoid hitting the stopped car, and went toward the east ditch.
Gary Evans, 38, of Ashton, was eastbound on Route 38, saw Ball lose control and tried to avoid hitting him as Ball’s car skidded toward his car but could not, Evans told Sauk Valley Media Thursday afternoon. He T-boned Ball’s car on the passenger side, Evans said. Proud to Provide

L
ives there a cook whose heart beats so cold that he has not entertained dreams of building a wood-fired pizza oven in his backyard? Not in my house. Just imagine summer evenings with friends gathered around the fire, shoveling in custom pizza after custom pizza, each emerging within a few minutes, blistered and browned on the top and with that perfect leopardspeckled char underneath – crispy, chewy and tender at the same time. But when I broached the subject with my wife, who has already imposed a strict one-in/one-out moratorium on kitchen gadgets, she just laughed. How many toys would I need to get rid of to equal one pizza oven? And when she found out that said pizza oven would cost as much as a small car, she positively howled. Cruel. However, I have found an alternative. Granted, it doesn’t have the architectural grandeur of the glorious oven I cooked in at a friend’s house on the Palos Verdes Peninsula the other week. And I’ll admit that the pizzas are not yet quite as foolproof.
But they’re pretty danged close. It’s a gadget called the KettlePizza, and it fits over the top of the ubiquitous Weber grill. And after a little tweaking and a lot of learning curve, I have to say that it’s kind of terrific. You can order the KettlePizza from www.kettlepizza.com in various formats. The most basic includes a pizza stone and sleeve that fits over the grill, with a hemispherical cutout that lets you slide the pizzas in and out. This costs $150. Other formats are basically embellishments and range up to $400. The operation is simple in outline but a bit more complicated in execution. You build a fire in the grill and arrange the coals in a C-shape. Add a couple of good-sized chunks of hardwood, and when those catch fire, place the sleeve on top with the pizza stone on the grill. Cover and wait until the fire gets really hot. And it will. Using just this bare-bones setup, I got temperatures on the stone of more than 600 degrees (uh, I did have to buy an infrared thermometer – one of those guns that shoot a laser beam at a surface to measure the tempera-
ture; seriously, it was for science – and my wife was out of town). That’s way hotter than any home oven, but the pizzas still weren’t as good as I’d hoped. So I took to the Internet, where there is an active cult of KettlePizza enthusiasts (there are more than 4,000 videos on YouTube). The high priest of this group is my old e-friend J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, and his series of posts on the Serious Eats blog at www.seriouseats.com should be required reading. Following Lopez-Alt’s advice, I tweaked my KettlePizza by putting a second grill on top of the sleeve and using that to support a cover. I used the Baking Steel I’d ordered a couple of years ago for my kitchen oven, flanked by the 25-year-old quarry tiles I’d used for baking pizzas before that. (LopezAlt, along with the designer of the Baking Steel and the designer of the KettlePizza have now teamed up for a deluxe package that will do all of this for you in a much more elegant build ... It’s $400, with part of the proceeds going to charity.) This arrangement reduces the volume of air that needs to be heated
by the fire and also provides an upper radiant heat source to better cook the top of the pizza. In fact, the biggest problem I had after this tweak was that the oven was too hot – the pizzas cooked much more quickly than I was expecting (do not even think about getting a beer while the pizza is baking). It took a few tries to get the process refined. But I am now able to maintain an oven temperature of 650 to 750 degrees for almost an hour before refueling and turn out pizzas that bake consistently in less than 5 minutes. At least until I win the lottery, my pizza dreams are satisfied.
Tips for making a wood-fired pizza Here are some of the tips that I learned while perfecting my KettlePizza technique. Use charcoal briquettes rather than lump charcoal, and use a lot of them. Briquettes don’t burn as hot as the lump, but they burn longer. You’ll need two to three chimneys’ worth of charcoal to get the heat you want for the length of time you’ll need it. Arrange the briquettes in a C shape, and make sure that you stack them higher in the back (this improves the flow of hot air over the top of the pizza). You have to be much more proactive about managing the fire than you do in normal grill-
ing; once you’ve got the temperature you want, shut down the top vents almost entirely and close the bottom vents halfway to maintain the burn. Keep the pizza stone relatively close to the front of the grill. The farther back it is, the more uneven the heat. Expect to rotate the pizza two or three times to get even browning. Keep the toppings simple and relatively spare. Especially at first, loading down the pizza with ingredients will make it harder to get from peel to stone. Work quickly when building the pizza. Even well-floured dough will start to stick to the peel if it is left alone, and that’s especially true once you’ve started to add toppings.
