Child care center eyes Lincoln Open Sesame might buy closed elementary school BY JERMAINE PIGEE
DIXON – Officials at Open Sesame Children’s Learning Center in Dixon said the day care might move into the vacant Lincoln Elementary School. “We are considering that,� said Doug Lee, president of the Open Sesame board of directors. Before Lincoln closed at the end of the last school year, Open Sesame held afterschool programs there and at Washington and Jefferson elementary schools. “With the closure of Lincoln, Open Sesame has lost that space in the two remaining buildings,� Lee said. “On a temporary basis, the school district has allowed us to move not only the summer program, but
also the after-school program into Lincoln. We are exploring whether that can be a permanent arrangement.� Although Open Sesame is considering buying the building, there are some concerns. Lee said Lincoln School is a much bigger space than what Open Sesame needs. The board of directors also has to determine if a new location will fit into its budget and if a move is something parents and staff will support. “There is a lot of things that we need to consider,� Lee said. “It would be a huge move for us.� Because they are early in the process, Lee said it’s too early to determine how much the building would cost. OREGON – Black smoke, bouncing front tires, and loud engines filled the grandstand Thursday afternoon at the Ogle County Fair. These were coming from a variety of tractors being driven in the annual tractor pulls. Bill Clothier of Polo brought his Farmall 1466 Turbo to the line and went down the track in the 12,500-pound division. When the flag was waved to end his run, Clothier finished with a pull of 313 feet, 2 feet short of a full pull. “I just missed the pulloff,” Clothier said. “I was close today, but I am in the hunt. Other tractors have 200 hp more than this one.” Clothier used to compete in the antique tractor pull and decided to try the larger show. This was his second tractor pull this year. His other was at Leaf River Summer Daze. “I like to stay close to home,” Clothier said. “You meet good, friendly people. It makes it fun. It is 99 percent fun competing in tractor pulls.” The other 1 percent is

City receives grant money for lead abatement Award in form of forgivable loan

The money is available for owner-occupied, rental or vacant properties. Occupants must have a household income that is no more than 80 percent of the area median income. In Whiteside County, the AMI is $57,900. At 80 percent of the AMI, a family of four would be making $46,650. STERLING – The city has received a grant to help qualifying residents eradicate lead-based paint hazards in their homes. Sterling has been awarded $78,800 through the Lead Hazard Control Grant program, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The city will match between $3,600 and $3,900, which will be used to pay city workers who deal with the paperwork the grant generates. The grant is adminis-

paint was banned from home use. Also, at least one child younger than 6 must live there or be present in the home for at least 200 hours a year. Because the paint was banned so long ago, people tend to forget that lead poisoning is still the most prevalent environmental illness contracted by children. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, each year approximately
25,000 children statewide are identified with elevated lead levels in their blood. Many more children are suffering from the effects of lead, but it is going undetected. “Many people have lead-based paint in their homes, and don’t know it,� said Amanda Schmidt, city building and zoning superintendent. “If it was built before 1978, there’s a good chance you have
it, to some degree.� Many older buildings still have lead paint on walls, woodwork, siding, doors, windows and porches. While the top paint layer might not contain lead, the dangerous variety oftentimes is still in the layers that were just painted over. The more the paint chips, the more dangerous it becomes. A child can get lead poisoning by swallowing or breathing in lead dust. A testing process is required for children in the homes receiving grant money. “Kids 6 and under take the brunt of lead-based paint problems, and are often referred by the health departments,�
Schmidt said. “Beforeand-after tests for lead poisoning must be done as a grant requirement.� Schmidt said a minimum of seven homes can be worked on with the city’s share from HUD. “This is the first time we’ve gotten this grant, but we’re looking at up to $11,200 per unit,� she said. “We could do more homes, if some don’t need the maximum amount for their work.� The grant is of the useit-or-lose-it variety; the deadline is July 2016. With gardens beginning to overflow, now is the perfect time to bring back my vegetable pie recipe. I have made three pies over the past week, none of them alike. The great thing about this recipe is any and all vegetables are perfect for it and will not only look gorgeous, but will taste delicious every time.
My last vegetable pie included the following garden fresh produce: potato, zucchini, yellow squash, tomato, banana
pepper, green pepper and a couple of additional store-bought items, including red pepper, onion and carrots. I first sautĂŠ the vegetables in a little olive oil and garlic. Add your choice of seasonings and cheeses. I like to use a little pepper and McCormick Perfect Pinch vegetable seasoning. For cheese, I add shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese, and for extra flavor, I add a few triangles of laughing cow light
cheese. My favorite flavor of late is French onion. For your vegetable pie crust, you can use a traditional pie crust (bottom only), or I often will use a tube of reduced-fat crescent rolls, spread out to form a crust. Here is the recipe for my vegetable pie. Have fun creating your own with as many vegetables as you wish to use. Most of all, enjoy eating your delicious creation!
Vegetable Pie 1 pie crust or 1 tube of reduced-fat crescent rolls 4-5 cups of vegetables, such as zucchini, yellow squash, red pepper, banana pepper, onion, carrot slices, potato cubes, spinach, and tomato ½ cup egg substitute or 2 whole eggs Cheese and seasonings of choice SautÊ vegetables in 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil until tender-crisp. Spread
crust into pie pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Spread about 1 tablespoon mustard over crust. Mix egg with cheese and add cooked vegetables. Pour into crust and top with extra cheese. Bake at 375 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until set and crust is browned. Let sit 10 minutes prior to serving.

Large, juicy mangoes are at the height of their season in South Florida. Grilled turkey sausages with a mango relish make a sweet and spicy summer dinner. There are several different turkey sausages available with various seasonings added. Some are hot and spicy, others are mild and tame, and still others are smoked. Pick whatever suits your taste. Bagged, shredded cabbage ready to use for coleslaw is available in the produce section of the market. Some come with shredded carrots as well as cabbage. This makes making homemade coleslaw a breeze. If pressed for time, buy deli coleslaw. The recipe here calls for mango cubes. Here is a quick way to cube a mango: Slice off each side of the mango as close to the pit as possible. Take the mango half in your hand, skin side down. Score the fruit in a crosshatch pattern through to the skin. Bend the skin backward so that the cubes pop up. Slice the cubes away from the skin. Score and slice any fruit left on the pit. Helpful hints: Sausages can be grilled outside or on a stove-top grill. For easy cleanup if using a stove-top grill, spray it with a vegetable oil spray before using. Countdown: Make coleslaw and set aside to marinate. Make mango relish. Grill sausages. Shopping list: 1 ripe mango, 1 red onion, 1 lime, 1 package low-fat turkey sausage (4 needed), 1 package whole wheat hot dog buns (4 needed), 1 bag shredded cabbage, 1 jar reduced-fat mayonnaise, 1 package brown sugar, 1 small bottle distilled white vinegar and 1 jar Dijon mustard Staples: Vegetable oil spray, salt and black peppercorns
Grilled Turkey Sausage with Mango Relish ½ cup cubed ripe mango 1½ teaspoons brown sugar Ÿ cup diced red onion 1 tablespoon lime juice Salt and freshly ground black pepper Vegetable oil spray 4 low fat turkey sausages (about 12 ounces total) 4 whole wheat hot dog buns Mix mango, brown sugar, onion and lime juice together in a small bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Preheat grill or use stove-top grill. Spray grill with vegetable oil spray. Grill sausages 5 minutes, then turn and grill 5 minutes more. A meat thermometer should read 165 degrees. Open hot dog buns and toast on grill for 2 minutes. Serve sausages on buns and spoon mango relish on top. Makes 2 servings. Per serving: 575 calories (30 percent from fat), 19.4 g fat (4.2 g saturated, 6.5 g monounsaturated),

Big experiment; tiny particle Student from Dixon among those working on high-profile experiment BY KATIE DAHLSTROM
Mary Shenk thought helping solve an unexplained phenomenon about life’s basic building blocks seemed like the best way to spend her summer. Shenk, a 33-year-old Northern Illinois University graduate student, is one of more than a dozen NIU students – including one from Dixon – and faculty members working at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory on a high-profile experiment centered around a 17-ton magnet and a mysterious subatomic particle. “The results we get from this will help to discover new particle physics and discover new things about the universe,” Shenk said. The Muon g-2 experiment will study the elusive muon and its interaction with magnetic fields. Scientists believe the experiment could lead to the discovery of new particles or hidden subatomic forces. The 50-foot-wide circular electromagnet that
made a 3,200-mile journey from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York last summer will be the centerpiece of the Muon g-2 experiment. Workers completed the final leg of the magnet’s journey Wednesday, moving it into a building where the experiment will happen in 2016. Muons are a heavier version of electrons, wobbling like a spinning top. Scientists know why muons wobble, but the way they wobble remains a mystery. A study done by Brookhaven scientists in 2001 showed the muons’ wobble didn’t match what was predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics, which covers how fundamental particle make up the matter in the universe. The Fermilab experiment will have four times the precision of the Brookhaven experiment. “It has the possibility to re-write the textbook,” said Mike Eads, an assistant professor of physics, who has lead NIU’s Muon

One of NIU’s main roles
in the experiment will be quality control testing for a complex straw-tube tester, a type of particle detector being built in Liverpool, England. The device detects particles known as positrons, which result from the decay of muons. Aaron Epps, 34, who is moving from Dixon to DeKalb today, started working on the project 2 years ago. A graduate student in physics, Epps designed, coded and test-
ed methods to measure tension on the wires that will be used in the quality control tests. He now is learning simulation software and plans to stay with the experiment until it’s complete. “While we’re not trying to build a new product, we’re really probing fundamentally how the universe works,” Epps said. Shenk, a physics major living in DeKalb, is working a simulation that will
help determine the best way to set up the experiment. She plans to work at Fermilab among scientists from 26 institutions across the world through the coming school year and next summer. Michael McEvoy, 24, of St. Charles, has spent the summer before he starts his second year of graduate school preparing for the experiment. McEvoy is part of a group working on slow controls, or longterm data temperature, pressure and other properties of the machine. The group is still designing the right system and types of sensors that will be placed on the magnet. What the experiment will mean to people who aren’t apt at solving a particle physics puzzle won’t be clear immediately after the experiment and all data collection is done close to 2020, scientists said. But they said without hesitation it will leave an impression on the world. “The regular, average person won’t see right away,” McEvoy said. “But what comes from our research will be very important. The second generation of research will lead to new innovation.”

STERLING – An arbitration session has been scheduled in the ongoing contract negotiations between the city and its police union. City Administrator Scott Shumard said an arbitrator would step in on Oct. 2, if no deal is hammered out by then. “I guess something could be done before that time, but it’s been more than a year since the last contract expired,” Shumard said. “There’s not a lot
of motivation to hurry, if the increase is modest and will be retroactive.” The city’s contract with its police department expired April 30, 2013. Because the jobs are in the public safety arena, the existing contract is automatically extended until a new labor agreement is reached with the department. An arbitration session had been scheduled for May, but the union requested that a mediator be used instead. The mediator was brought in and
was unable to help the sides reach a deal. A mediator presides over a meeting to facilitate negotiations as an unbiased third party, while an arbitrator is entrusted with handing down a decision in the matter. The decision is usually binding for both parties. The city ratified a new 3-year contract with its fire department union at a special council meeting on June 23. The firefighters will get a 1.75 percent raise in the first and second
years of the deal, and a 2.5 percent raise in the final year, for a total of 6 percent over the life of the contract. The trickiest part of those negotiations was to bring the three captains into the union. “From the get-go, we knew there would be a lot of language changes to bring the captains under the umbrella,” said Lt. Matt Laughlin, the fire department’s union representative. The fire department contract had expired April 30, but both sides called it a relatively smooth
process this time around. While Laughlin said wages and salaries were the only thing negotiated in the fire contract, several other issues are sticking points for the police union. “There are numerous issues here – financial, time off and scheduling issues,” Shumard said. One of those issues is a 12-hour shift agreement that was introduced on a trial basis in the current contract. The 12-hour shifts result in alternating 3-day and 4-day workweeks.
