They also spent time painting pictures. “So many times, there is not enough time in the classroom for instruction and activity,� Whitlock said. “I’m trying to get the students to where they read a book and it has meaning. I hope this can grow over time.� Whitlock has been a teacher for 16 years, the last 11 at Merrill. She has taught in Sterling and Dixon. After she read to the students, she gave them a book to take home. “A lot of the books were my own children’s books,

ROCK FALLS – Jan Whitlock has created her very own outdoor classroom. Every Wednesday for the past month, Whitlock has been reading books to elementary school students outside the Coloma Homes meeting room, at 401 W. 18th St., during a session of the “Let’s Feed Our Children� free summer lunch program. Although area students have been spending the summer months away from the classroom, Whitlock said she wants them to keep their minds active over the long break. “I just have a drive and interest in doing a program for the kids,� said Whitlock, a special education teacher at Merrill
and a lot of them I have bought over the years and I kept in my classroom,� Whitlock said. “I want the students to have reading material throughout the summer. A lot of times, students don’t have access to a library over the summer.� Students and parents say they appreciate the effort Whitlock has put forth. “I think this is awesome and great,� said Amy Scott of Rock Falls. “It’s a learning experience for the students. I think this is really cool.� Scott’s daughter, 6-year-old Katalina, who will be a first-grader at Dillon Elementary School in Rock Falls, said she enjoyed having Whitlock read to her. “It’s great,� Katalina

DeKALB – The thought that her grandchildren might never see a monarch butterfly terrifies Mary Kowalski. So she’s nurturing five monarch caterpillars she found on the milkweed plants outside her DeKalb home in hopes they will transform into the iconic orange-andblack-winged insects. Kowalski’s fears aren’t far-fetched, some local experts say. Monarch butterflies make a remarkable journey from the upper Midwest to Mexico every year, but the number of monarchs measured in Mexico has declined by 97 percent since its peak less than 20 years ago, say scientists with the World Wildlife Fund that measures the population annually. The decline has prompted local conservationists and residents to bolster supplies of milkweed, the plant crucial to mon-

But it’s not just what’s happening to monarchs that has them concerned. “I’m concerned about our world,� Kowalski said. “They used to send a canary into a coal mine and, if it died, they knew there was poison gas. with University of Illinois Extension, the scary part about the monarchs’ decline is what it means for other pollinators and insects. “I think the monarch is an easy poster child,� Doty said. “But this is happening to a lot of other pollinators. No pollinators, no food.� Pat Miller spends her days educating people in northern Illinois about conserva-
tion issues, such as the declining population of monarch butterflies, the state insect that appears in Illinois from May to September. She’s a conservation specialist with Monarch Watch, a nationwide organization based out of the University of Kansas. “I think the average person should care about monarchs, because it’s an indicator,� Miller said. “What’s

happening to monarchs is happening to other insects. We just can’t track them.� Scientists measure the monarch population by observing how much area they cover in overwintering sites in Mexico. According to Monarch Watch, when measured this winter, monarchs covered 1.65 acres, a dismal figure compared to the 51.8 acres they covered at their peak in the
winter of 1997. “We don’t think they’ll ever achieve the numbers they once had,� Miller said. “The good thing, though, about insects is they can produce at rapid rates.� Monarchs exclusively lay their eggs on milkweed, because it provides all the nutrients the black, white and yellow banded caterpillars need. After they mature into butterflies, they will migrate thousands of miles to Mexico, Miller said. However, Miller explained, milkweed plants are disappearing because of things such as modern farming practices. Milkweed previously thrived along fence rows or among corn and soybean fields. But milkweed has been a victim of advancements in herbicides and disappearing fencerows, Miller said. Ensuring milkweed survives so monarchs can thrive is far from farmers’ minds, said Russ Higgins, an educator at the University of Illinois Extension farm in Waterman. Allowing milkweed can decrease a farmer’s crop yield with very little payoff, he said. While beautiful, monarchs are not prolific pollinators. Even if they were, corn and soybeans don’t require pollination.

What a ‘beautiful mess’ Less access means less foot traffic for some businesses BY MATT MENCARINI
DIXON – For more than 2 months, roads downtown have been blocked off, and construction equipment and holes have filled the streets. But many businesses have remained open as the downtown streetscape project entered its ninth week this week, the first that saw a section of road reopen. Some business owners have seen a drop-off in customers and others, with more years under their belt and more regular customers, have been able to maintain business, despite the limited access from the main roads. At least one business, J&J Household Furnishings, 223 W. First St., has closed during the work. A sign in the front door window on Thursday read, “Closed due to construction. Will reopen when done.� Venier’s Jewelry Store, 117 W. First St., owned Mike Venier, was among the first businesses to see some of their street reopened to traffic, when the south side of First Street, between Hennepin and Galena avenues, was finished last week. “It’s gone pretty smoothly,� Venier said. “I can’t say that we were adversely affected at all. We were maybe 4 hours without a sidewalk [at one point].� Venier’s store is on the east side of the $6.1 million project, which was approved by the City Council in May. The city contracted Wendler Engineering Services Inc. and Willett, Hofmann & Associates, for a combined $321,000, to provide the engineering work and design for the project. Fischer Excavating Inc. of Freeport is being paid nearly $5.8 million for the construction work, which began the week of May 20. A portion of that will be paid for by KSB Hospital for work to a parking lot off Ottawa Avenue. Jeff Kuhn, commissioner of streets and public improvements, said the business owners he’s talked to understand the situation. “They’ve all been very supportive,� he said. “They realize that it’s going to be a headache for them, and
they might be losing a little business. And they look at the final project and that it will be worth it.� The rest of First Street, between Galena and Hennepin avenues, could be opened within a week, Kuhn said, and Peoria Avenue, between Second and Third streets, could reopen soon after that. Justin Meyers, owner of Effervesce Vapors, 112 S. Peoria Ave., said progress has been steady, and from what he can see, the construction crews have been working hard, even sometimes on the weekend and during off-hours. But Meyers, who opened his business in early June, after the project started, said the work has limited access to his store. “Yes, it definitely has,� he said. “But not so much that I’m really affected now. Being a new business, each week gets better for me.� Meyers has used his business’ Facebook page and Yelp, a business review website, to get the word out to customers that Effervesce Vapors is still open. But he said he said some customers who are in their 70s won’t make the trip through the construction. Others, he said, have had to walk past a sign that said the sidewalk was closed and then over the gravel to make it to his store. He doesn’t like that the sign was there, he said, because the sidewalks were supposed to be open throughout the entire project, other than brief closures for concrete work or demolition. Similar to Meyers is Amy Fenwick and her business, Roxie’s Boutique, which opened in late 2013 at the intersection of Peoria Avenue and First Street. Because Fenwick’s business is relatively new, she hasn’t had time, she said, to build a big base of regular customers. “I think I’m a little less established,� she said. “I have some regulars, but I don’t think I have that loyalty yet to where they’ll venture out and climb the mounds of gravel.� When work started a few blocks south of Roxie’s on Peoria Avenue, Fenwick said she could notice a dip in customer traffic, because people weren’t sure how to get downtown, so they avoided the area. Fenwick, Meyers and Venier all have used social media to communicate with their customers that they’re still open. Fenwick said she’ll have a coupon out soon offering a discount for purchases during the construction.

Although all of the business owners expected some disruption from the work, some of it has been more than they expected. Fenwick likes the fact that work is being done to both side of her block of Peoria, she said, but would have liked to know that was going to happen ahead of time, adding that the original plan was to do one side at a time. About 2 weeks ago, the 100 block of Peoria Avenue started to get torn up for construction. Shortly after that, Meyers said, his business and the others along the east side of that block flooded. He’s working with his insurance company to file a claim, he said. But Meyers said he understands that the work needs to get done and said it will be good for the city. Venier said the simple jewelry repairs portion of his business might have dropped off during the work, but added that his customers are aware of the back entrance, so it hasn’t been a serious deterrent. “It’s been a mess,� he said of the downtown. “But all along we’ve called it a beautiful mess. And it’s the pains that we need to go through [to benefit the city].�

Y
ou know you’re in the heart of the summer when the melons come out to play. Watermelons, with their bright red smiles, a drop of juice glistening on each slice. Honeydews, green and festive, temptingly arrayed on a plate. Merry, golden cantaloupes, sweet and softly yielding. Melons are summertime’s gift to us, an apology for the heat and humidity, an effort to make things right. And they are so cool and refreshing, they do actually improve your life. When you’re eating a melon, it’s hard to feel anything but happy. Watermelons belong in a cooler on a bed of ice, ready to be eaten at a picnic. Cantaloupe and honeydew turn breakfast into something special. All they require is a wedge of lemon or lime. You already know about cantaloupe wrapped with prosciutto (if you don’t, take a chunk of cantaloupe, wrap it in a thin slice of prosciutto and eat. Repeat until blissful). Perhaps you’ve had a honeydew smoothie (blend honeydew melon with crushed ice and milk. It’s a remarkably refreshing treat). And if you haven’t had chicken or tuna salad mounded in half of a small cantaloupe, now is the time to start. To celebrate the joy of all things melon, I went a slightly different route. I stuck close to the lightand-healthy basics, with melon-rich salads and a silken panna cotta for des-
sert. To begin with, I chose a salad that is almost as popular as cantaloupe wrapped with prosciutto. It is a terrific example of a simple dish packing a huge dividend of flavor; it has a high taste-to-effort ratio. The dish is a watermelon, Feta and basil salad, and it is nothing more than watermelon, Feta cheese, basil, a bit of red onion and a simple vinaigrette. What makes it so extraordinary is the way the flavors play off one another. The cheese, with its salty tang, adds a richness that is balanced by the edge of the vinaigrette and onion, all of which plays under the smooth, cool blend of basil and watermelon. It is one of those dishes that achieves culinary perfection. If you’re at my house in the summer, you’re as likely as not to be served it. A more ambitious and complicated use of melons is a picante three-melon salad. Wonderfully low in calories (don’t tell anyone; they don’t have to know), this salad hits the taste superfecta: It is sweet, sour, salty and spicy. For dessert it is more melon, of course, a cantaloupe panna cotta. A popular dessert in Italy, panna cotta combines the best aspects of ice cream and Jell-O, but it tastes much better than that sounds. It is a semi-solid but somewhat quivering chilled dessert made with cream – or milk, if you must, and in this case some Greek yogurt is added to make it a bit tangy. If you don’t like it tangy, stick with the cream. Or
the milk. Most of the flavor, in this case, comes from pureed cantaloupe (or other melon), sweetened with honey.
WATERMELON, BASIL AND FETA SALAD Yield: 4 servings 4 cups watermelon, cubed 1 cup Feta cheese, crumbled 1/2 cup red onion, sliced thin, optional 10 leaves fresh basil, sliced thin Vinaigrette or ranch dressing In a large bowl, combine watermelon, Feta cheese and optional red onion. Scatter basil over the top, and lightly dress with vinaigrette or ranch dressing. Per serving (no dressing): 140 calories; 8 g fat; 6 g saturated fat; 35 mg cholesterol; 6 g protein; 15 g carbohydrate; 14 g sugar; 1 g fiber; 425 mg sodium; 195 mg calcium.
