ROCK FALLS – Around 11 p.m. on June 28, 2008, Brock Branson, Kilynna Blake, her son, Dayan, and Kenneth Ulve were ambushed and brutally murdered in their Rock Falls apartment, beaten repeatedly with a hammer. Nicholas Sheley was the one who delivered those blows, a Rock Island County jury decided Thursday. Ulve was killed first. Then Sheley waited until Branson and the Blakes got home before ambushing them in their hallway. Kilynna Blake’s cry of “Oh god, don’t! Stop!� ultimately was silenced by Sheley. The 12-person jury deliberated for almost 4 hours before reaching a guilty verdict against the Sterling man. Judge Jeffrey O’Connor set Sheley’s sentencing for Aug. 11. The jury also found the deaths to be “exceptionally brutal and heinous indicative of wanton cruelty.� It is the third time Sheley has been found guilty of murder in what prosecutors say was a drug- and alcohol-induced killing spree that resulted in eight deaths in late June 2008.
After the state rested its case Thursday, defense attorney Jeremy Karlin called no witnesses. And, as in his previous trials, Sheley did not testify in his own defense, which is his right. Sheley, 34, is also accused of killing an Arkansas couple in Festus, Missouri, and is already serving two life sentences for murder in the death of Ronald Randall in Galesburg and the killing of Russell Reed, 93, in Sterling. Evidence showed Sheley had been all over the northwestern corner of the state on the day he killed the four people in Rock Falls. His morning began in Rock Island, where he’d smashed a brick through someone’s car window and then fell asleep in the back seat. He was awakened by the car’s owner and chased out of it, over a hill and across the street, where he broke into a business, Illinois Oil Products, stole a pair of shorts and a work shirt with “A.J.� on the breast, and left his jeans on a desk. That was how Assistant Attorney General Steve Nate began his hour-long closing statement at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the eighth day of Sheley’s
trial. “Nearly 6 years ago, events were set in motion right here in Rock Island that led to the brutal murder of four innocent people,� Nate said. “By midnight of the 28th, Kilynna Blake, Dayan Blake, Brock Branson, and Kenneth Ulve were all dead, their heads crushed by repeated blows. “Nicholas Sheley did this. Nicholas Sheley is the one responsible for these murders. Nicholas Sheley killed Brock. He killed Ki. He killed Dayan. And he killed Kenny.� DNA analysts throughout the past 2 weeks have testified that Sheley’s DNA was found on a blue work shirt with “A.J.� on the breast, a pair of shorts, and two Newport brand cigarettes, all of which were found in the Rock Falls apartment where the murders occurred. They have testified that his DNA was found all over the blue truck he stole after killing Randall earlier in the evening. They have testified that Sheley’s DNA also was found on the clothing he stole from the Rock Falls apartment and was seen wearing in St. Louis and in Festus.

ROCKFORD (AP) – Mel Crooks is getting another chance at making his dream of having an educational geometric toy in every home and classroom come true. The Rockford designer and inventor is launching his toy, Delta Flex Domes and Spheres – a set of 1-by-8-inch bendable strips pieced together with brass fasteners – to teach about shapes. He patented the invention in 1979 and 1980 with the intention of selling his product. He put his vision on hold for decades, though, to spend time with his family and focus on his different businesses. But he said it’s never too late. Even at age 76. “Domes and spheres are pretty hard to put together. I found a way to simplify it,� Crooks said. “The idea is that it comes with all of the pieces, and you put it together into different shapes.�
An idea born Crooks had just finished his design degree at the Second American Bauhaus at Southern Illinois University in 1962 when he was drafted into the Army. He quickly learned that the government could put a designer in the military, but the military couldn’t take the designer out of him. “I just got out of school and being a designer, you’re a free thinker. Being in the military, they do a lot of the thinking for you,� Crooks said. He started putzing around with wet, wooden coffee sticks to create different triangular shapes. The creative activity helped keep him occupied during his 2 years of service. Crooks knew his design had potential, but he didn’t have time to promote it, with a wife and child at home. Time slowly slipped away from him. But he agreed to take another stab at getting his toy on shelves when his second wife died 2 years ago. This time, he’s got the support of friends and family to get the invention in stores later this year. John Stukel, who’s helping market the toy, said he was a bit apprehensive when he first learned about Crooks’ vision. But as Crooks started to explain how spheres and domes make up virtually every creative design, he was hooked. Stukel started researching the figures on the Internet, wanting to know more about these shapes. “It would be a disaster if he had this great idea and didn’t share it with anyone,� Stukel said.

Crooks has created a workshop in his home, using different rooms to cut strips, spray-paint material and assemble kits. He plans to roll out his toy later this year, complete with an educational booklet to illustrate how to make these shapes. But, for now, he will focus on educating students about geometric shapes. He recently led Hiawatha School District students in Kirkland through a hands-on activity teaching them about these intricate shapes. “If I can teach kids, then I can teach anyone,� Crooks said. His victims’ DNA was found on that clothing, too, spattered with blood and recovered by investigators from a dumpster at a Festus gas station. When Sheley finally was arrested by Granite City police July 1, officers found a sleeve of developed film, a disposable camera, a pack of cigarettes, and sunglasses – stolen from Branson after his death. The negatives were printed, and those photos, shown to the jury this morning, showed a smiling Sheley, wearing Branson’s clothing, touring around downtown St. Louis, at the Arch, on the street, and on a bench in a park next to a red bicycle. “Ladies and gentleman, this is Nicholas Sheley,� Nate said, showing the jury the picture of Sheley
deserved the chance to live this life and fulfill their dreams.� As the jury exited the room after delivering their verdict, the victims’ families all stood, tearfully embracing and breathing sighs of relief. When Sheley was led out of the room, a cry erupted from Jodi Fitzgerald, Branson’s sister. “I hope you rot in hell, Nick Sheley!� she said. Outside the courtroom, victims’ family members embraced, crossing family lines to comfort and congratulate one another on finally getting some closure. “We’ve all become so close,� Fitzgerald says. “Through this whole situation, we have this great bond. We’ve connected through text messages, Facebook; it’s been absolutely amazing.� “It’s closure, but it’s really not, since it’s been so long,� Connie Branson, Brock’s mother said. Dallas Branson, Brock’s
father, embraced Assistant Attorney General Bill Elward outside the courtroom. “You’re a good man,� Elward said. “You’re a good man. Brock would be proud of you.� “I feel that justice was finally served,� Whiteside County State’s Attorney Trish Joyce said, standing outside of the Rock Island County Justice Center. “Although it was delayed, it has finally arrived. I feel such a sense of relieve for the Branson, Blake and Ulve family members and also the ones that have gone before them, such as the Reed family, the Randall family, and soon to come, the Esteses’ family.� Sheley has now been convicted of six of the eight murders prosecutors originally accused him of. He will next head to court in Missouri for the deaths of the Estes couple.
Coroner: Boy found locked inside vehicle BY TERRI SIMON
PRINCETON – Princeton Police and the Bureau County coroner are investigating the death of a 5-year-old boy whose body was found in the family vehicle Sunday. According to Coroner Janice Wamhoff, Logan Jacobs had asked his father, Michael Jacobs, if he could play with his tablet. The elder Jacobs was doing household chores and assumed his son was in his room playing with the device. A 10-year-old sister and two other girls
also were at the home. Logan was found in the hot vehicle, which was parked in front of the home, about 2 hours later. The windows were up, the vehicle was locked, and the tablet was plugged into the charger, Wamhoff said. The child was known to fall asleep easily, she added. He was pronounced dead at 6:05 p.m. at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton. An autopsy was done Monday, but the results were not in Thursday. An inquest may be scheduled. Tropical Chicken Yields: 4 servings Ingredients: 2 pounds cut-up chicken, your favorite pieces 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro leaves, chopped 1 jalapeùo, seeded and minced 1 tablespoon cumin 1 teaspoon dried oregano leaves ½ teaspoon salt Ÿ teaspoon black pepper Ÿ teaspoon white pepper 4 cups sour orange juice (or 2 ½ cups lime juice and 1 ½ cups orange juice), see note 1 cup pineapple juice Note: Sour orange juice is also called bitter orange juice and is often available at Hispanic food markets. Directions: 1. Pat chicken dry. With edge of knife or mortar and pestle, mash together garlic, cilantro, jalapeùo, cumin, oregano, salt and pepper until it forms a coarse paste. A sprinkling of kosher salt will help it form a paste, if necessary. Spread paste evenly over chicken. 2. Mix together sour orange juice and pineapple juice in a large bowl. Add chicken to the juices,
cover, and marinate in the refrigerator at least 4 hours or overnight. 3. Arrange grill for indirect cooking and heat to medium hot. Place chicken on the side of the grill away from the heat, and cover. Cook 40 to 50 minutes for white meat, 1 hour for dark meat, turning once. 4. Serve with rice and black beans.
