Gutters, screens and windows need special attention come spring and can save money in the long run. “Cleaning gutters from winter debris and flushing your down spouts will help keep water going where it is suppose to go – away from your home and foundation,� Kelly said. It’s time to haul out the grill, but before barbecuing that first burger, give your grill a fitness test. For propane gas grills, check the burners to make certain there are no clogs, insects or spiders that may have taken up residence over the winter. The burners, grill interior and grill pan should be thoroughly cleaned. Once cleaned, light the burners and observe to make certain there are no holes or rusting and they are burning evenly. Grill replacement parts are available at Grummerts, Ace and Menards, with staff to answer your questions on installation. As for propane, if the tank was stored over the winter and is in good condition, the propane will be fine and is safe to use. Both Menards and Ace offer propane filling services that can save money over pre-filled tanks. Menards also has the capability to fill larger propane tanks, such as those used in recreational vehicles for hot water and cooking. Grummert recommends a gutter cleaner that attaches easily to a water hose and allows for cleaning one-story home gutters standing on the ground, eliminating the need for a ladder. Special gutter caulks and sealers are available for plugging leaks as well as special gutter joints. Gutter guards will further help reduce build up. Now is the time to check windows and screens for seasonal wear. Examine window glazing to make certain water isn’t seeping in around the edges. If damaged, new caulking and a fresh coat of paint are a quick fix. Screens should be free of snags and holes. A quick hosing and they will be summer ready. If damaged, all three stores offer screen replacement and repair materials. Grummerts also offers screen repair services. Spruce up decks by first cleaning them of all leaves and debris that could increase moss, mold and contribute to wood rot. There are many good sealants and stains that can help extend deck life that are easy to apply and have the bonus of improving deck appearance. Grummert recommends a new Rustoleum product called Restore. The product goes on 10 times thicker than paint or stain, is easy to apply and is good for locking down splintered or weathered decking. When used, Restore can help extend the life of older decking. A newer synthetic and wood decking product is also available. According to Penning, the Âź-inch decking can be laid over and screwed into the existing decking. It comes in cedar, gray and redwood coloring and is also stainable since it has wood particles in it. Lawn mowers, blowers and trimmers all need a spring test drive. All three men agreed that the most important spring maintenance rule is fresh gas. If a gas-preserving additive were not added last fall, start fresh to avoid clogging and starting problems. Kelly also advises to clean equipment after each use – including the underside of mower decks so that grass doesn’t collect. This will also help maximize cutting blade performance. The trend toward more cordless blowers, trimmers and chain saws continues, making for easier use and lower maintenance. For those looking for maintenance-saving equipment, try out the new motorized, battery charged wheel barrel or utility task vehicle available at Menards. The UTV has a truck-like bed for hauling and has attachments for a 15 gallon sprayer, trailer – even a plow attachment. Also gaining popularity are pocket hoses with improved quality. The hoses are self-winding, selfcoiling, space saving and light weight. More spring checklist tips: s $ON T FORGET DRIVEWAYS AND SIDEWALKS !GAIN CLEANing is the key to remove winter dirt, leaves and moss that can make surfaces slippery. For asphalt, take care of cracks to keep water from seeping underneath and then seal overall. Crack and filling sealers are available for both concrete and blacktop. Keep air conditioners and the area around them clear of debris to increase the fresh air flow. Be certain to use a cleaner for the air conditioning coils to increase efficiency. Garage doors are often neglected. “People don’t really think of a garage door as an appliance,â€? Kelly said. “But it’s the biggest appliance in the home. Spring is a good time to lubricate the rollers and chain.â€? As for the lawn, all three men agree – feed it! Get your lawn off to a good start with a 4-step process to nourish it from spring through fall. Apply a good crab grass preventer and fertilizer in spring followed by weed-and-feed, insect and grub applications during the summer and a fall application to nourish the lawn over the winter months. They recommend cutting grass at the 3-inch level. Spring dethatching and/or aerating can also improve lawn health. Grummerts and Ace offer most lawn and cleaning equipment for rental. From grills to gutters, good spring maintenance will pay off in protecting and improving your investment.
